1Achromatic super-oscillatory lenses with subwavelength focusing显示文摘Lenses are crucial to light-enabled technologies.Conventional lenses have been perfected to achieve near-diffraction-limited resolution and minimal chromatic aberrations.However,such lenses are bulky and cannot focus light into a hotspot smaller than a half-wavelength of light.Pupil filters,initially suggested by Toraldo di Francia,can overcome the resolution constraints of conventional lenses but are not intrinsically chromatically corrected.Here we report single-element planar lenses that not only deliver sub-wavelength focusing,thus beating the diffraction limit of conventional refractive lenses,but also focus light of different colors into the same hotspot.Using the principle of super-oscillations,we designed and fabricated a range of binary dielectric and metallic lenses for visible and infrared parts of the spectrum that are manufactured on silicon wafers,silica substrates and optical fiber tips.Such low-cost,compact lenses could be useful in mobile devices,data storage,surveillance,robotics,space applications,imaging,manufacturing with light and spatially resolved nonlinear microscopies.Guang Hui Yuan Edward TF Rogers Nikolay I Zheludev 2017Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1:10
2Physical activity after total knee arthroplasty: A critical review显示文摘Total knee arthroplasty(TKA) is the most commonly performed elective surgery in the United States. TKA typically improves functional performance and reduces pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. Little is known about the influence of TKA on overall physical activity levels. Physical activity, defined as 'any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure', confers many health benefits but typically decreases with endstage osteoarthritis. The purpose of this review is to describe the potential benefits(metabolic, functional, and orthopedic) of physical activity to patients undergoing TKA, present results from recent studies aimed to determine the effect of TKA on physical activity, and discuss potential sources of variability and conflicting results for physical activity outcomes. Several studies utilizing self-reported outcomes indicate that patients perceive themselves to be more physically active after TKA than they were before surgery. Accelerometry-based outcomes indicate that physical activity for patients after TKA remains at or below pre-surgical levels. Several different factors likely contributed to these variable results, including the use of different instruments, duration of follow-up, and characteristics of the subjects studied. Comparison to norms, however, suggests that daily physical activity for patients following TKA may fall short of healthy agematched controls. 3Two-dimensional control of light with light on metasurfaces显示文摘The ability to control the wavefront of light is fundamental to focusing and redistribution of light,enabling many applications from imaging to spectroscopy.Wave interaction on highly nonlinear photorefractive materials is essentially the only established technology allowing the dynamic control of the wavefront of a light beam with another beam of light,but it is slow and requires large optical power.Here we report a proof-of-principle demonstration of a new technology for two-dimensional(2D)control of light with light based on the coherent interaction of optical beams on highly absorbing plasmonic metasurfaces.We illustrate this by performing 2D all-optical logical operations(AND,XOR and OR)and image processing.Our approach offers diffractionlimited resolution,potentially at arbitrarily-low intensity levels and with 100 THz bandwidth,thus promising new applications in space-division multiplexing,adaptive optics,image correction,processing and recognition,2D binary optical data processing and reconfigurable optical devices.Maria Papaioannou Eric Plum João Valente Edward TF Rogers Nikolay I Zheludev 2016Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1:3

5Suppressing tawny crazy ant (Nylanderia fulva) by RNAi technology显示文摘A bstract The tawny crazy ant(Nylanderia fulva)is a new invasive pest in the United States.At present,its management mainly relies on the use of synthetic insecticides,which are generally ineffective at producing lasting control of the pest,necessitating alternative environmentally friendly measures.In this study,we evaluated the feasibility of gene silencing to control this ant species.Six housekeeping genes encoding actin(NfActin),coatomer subunit β (NfCOPP),arginine kinase(NfArgK),and V-type proton ATPase subunits A(NfvATPaseA),B(NfvATPaseB)and E(NfvATPaseE)were cloned.Phylogenetic analysis revealed high sequence similarity to homologs from other ant species,particularly the Florida carpenter ant(Camponotus floridanus).To silence these genes,vector L4440 was used to generate six specific RNAi constructs for bacterial expression.Heat-inactivated,dsRNA-expressing Escherichia coli were incorporated into artificial diet.Worker ants exhibited reduced endogenous gene expression after feeding on such diet for 9 d.However,only ingestion of dsRNAs of NfCOPfi(a gene involved in protein trafficking)and NfArgK(a cellular energy reserve regulatory gene in invertebrates)caused modest but significantly higher ant mortality than the control.These results suggest that bacterially expressed dsRNA can be orally delivered to ant cells as a mean to target its vulnerabilities.Improved efficacy is necessary for the RNAi-based approach to be useful in tawny crazy ant management.Jia Meng Jiaxin Lei Andrew Davitt Jocelyn RHolt Jian Huang Roger Gold Edward L Vargo Aaron MTarone Keyan Zhu-Salzman 2020Insect Science2020,27,1:2
