| 2 | Prediction of permafrost changes in Northeastern China under a changing climate显示文摘Northeastern China has the second largest expanse of permafrost in China,primarily known as Xing'an-Baikal permafrost.Located on the southeastern edges of the Eurasian cryolithozone,the permafrost is thermally unstable and ecologically sensitive to external changes.The combined impacts of climatic,environmental,and anthropogenic changes cause 3-dimensional degradation of the permafrost.To predict these changes on the southern limit and ground temperature of permafrost in Northeastern China,an equivalent latitude model (ELM) for the mean annual ground surface temperature (MAGSTs) was proposed,and further improved to take into account of the influences of vegetation and snow-cover based on observational data and using the SHAW model.Using the finite element method and assuming a climate warming rate of 0.048°C a-1,the ELM was combined with the unsteady-state heat conduction model to simulate permafrost temperatures at present,and to predict those after 50 and 100 a.The results indicate that at present,sporadic permafrost occurs in the zones with MAGSTs of 1.5°C or colder,and there would still be a significant presence of permafrost in the zones with the present MAGSTs of 0.5°C or colder after 50 a,and in those of-0.5°C or colder after 100 a.Furthermore,the total areal extent of permafrost would decrease from 2.57×105 km2 at present to 1.84×105 km2 after 50 a and to 1.29×105 km2 after 100 a,i.e.,a reduction of 28.4% and 49.8% in the permafrost area,respectively.Also the permafrost would degrade more substantially in the east than in the west.Regional warming and thinning of permafrost would also occur.The area of stable permafrost (mean annual ground temperature,or MAGT≤-1.0°C) would decrease from present 1.07×105 to 8.8×104 km2 after 50 a,and further decrease to 5.6×104 km2 after 100 a.As a result,the unstable permafrost and seasonally frozen ground would expand,and the southern limit of permafrost would shift significantly northwards.The changes in the permafrost environment may adversely affect on ecological environments and engineering infrastructures in cold regions.Avoidance of unnecessary anthropogenic changes in permafrost conditions is a practical approach to protect the permafrost environment. | WEI Zhi JIN HuiJun ZHANG JianMing YU ShaoPeng HAN XuJun JI YanJun HE RuiXia CHANG XiaoLi | 2011 | Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,6: | 15 |
| 3 | Symbiosis of Marshes and Permafrost in Da and Xiao Hinggan Mountains in Northeastern China显示文摘Recently,the degradation of permafrost and marsh environments in the Da and Xiao Hinggan Mountains has become a great concern as more human activities and pronounced climate warming were observed during the past 30 years and projected for the near future.The distribution patterns and development mechanisms of the permafrost and marshes have been examined both in theories and in field observations,in order to better understand the symbiosis of permafrost and marshes.The permafrost and marshes in the Da and Xiao Hinggan Mountains display discernible zonations in latitude and elevation.The marsh vegetation canopy,litter and peat soil have good thermal insulation properties for the underlying permafrost,resulting in a thermal offset of 3℃ to 4℃ and subsequently suppressing soil temperature.In addition,the much higher thermal conductivity of frozen and ice-rich peat in the active layer is condu-cive to the development or in favor of the protection of permafrost due to the semi-conductor properties of the soils overlying the permafrost.On the other hand,because permafrost is almost impervious,the osmosis of water in marsh soils can be effectively reduced,timely providing water supplies for helophytes growth or germination in spring.In the Da and Xiao Hinggan Mountains,the permafrost degradation has been accelerating due to the marked climate warming,ever increasing human activities,and the resultant eco-environmental changes.Since the permafrost and marsh envi-ronments are symbiotic and interdependent,they need to be managed or protected in a well-coordinated and integrated way. | JIN Huijun SUN Guangyou YU Shaopeng JIN Rui HE Ruixia | 2008 | Chinese Geographical Science2008,18,1: | 13 |

| 6 | MicroRNAs are involved in the development and progression of gastric cancer显示文摘MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are recognized as an essential component of the RNA family, exerting multiple and intricate biological functions, particularly in the process of tumorigenesis, proliferation, and metastatic progression. MiRNAs are altered in gastric cancer (GC), showing activity as both tumor suppressors and oncogenes, although their true roles have not been fully understood. This review will focus upon the recent advances of miRNA studies related to the regulatory mechanisms of gastric tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle. We hope to provide an in-depth insight into the mechanistic role of miRNAs in GC development and progression. In particular, we summarize the latest studies relevant to miRNAs’ impact upon the epithelial- mesenchymal transition, tumor microenvironment, and chemoresistance in GC cells. | 7 | microRNA-218 suppresses the proliferation, invasion and promotes apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cells by targeting HMGB1显示文摘Objective: To detect the expression profiles of micro RNA-218(mi R-218) in human pancreatic cancer tissue(PCT) and cells and their effects on the biological features of human pancreatic cancer cell line PANC-1 and observe the effect of mi R-218 on the expression of the target gene high mobility group box 1(HMGB1), with an attempt to provide new treatment methods and strategies for pancreatic cancer.Methods: The expressions of mi R-218 in PCT and normal pancreas tissue as well as in various pancreatic cancer cell lines including As PC-1, Bx PC-3, and PANC-1 were determined with quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(q RT-PCR). The change of mi R-218 expression in PANC-1 cells was detected using qR T-PCT after the transfection of miR-218 mimic for 48 h. Cell Counting Kit-8(CCK-8) was applied for detecting the effect of mi R-218 on the activity of PANC-1 cells. The effects of mi R-218 on the proliferation and apoptosis of PANC-1 cells were analyzed using the flow cytometry. The effect of mi R-218 on the migration of PANC-1 cells was detected using the Trans-well migration assay. The HMGB1 was found to be a target gene of mi R-218 by luciferase reporter assay, and the effect of mi R-218 on the expression of HMGB1 protein in cells were determined using Western blotting.Results: As shown by q RT-PCR, the expressions of mi R-218 in PCT and in pancreatic cancer cell line significantly decreased when compared with the normal pancreatic tissue(NPT)(P<0.01). Compared with the control group, the miR-218 expression significantly increased in the PANC-1 group after the transfection of mi R-218 mimic for 48 h(P<0.01). Growth curve showed that the cell viability significantly dropped after the overexpression of mi R-218 in the PANC-1 cells for two days(P<0.05). Flow cytometry showed that the S-phase fraction significantly dropped after the overexpression of mi R-218(P<0.01) and the percentage of apoptotic cells significantly increased(P<0.01). As shown by the Trans-well migration assay, the enhanced mi R-218 expression was associated with a significantly lower number of cells that passed through a Transwell chamber(P<0.01). Luciferase reporter assay showed that, compared with the control group, the relative luciferase activity significantly decreased in the mi R-218 mimic group(P<0.01). As shown by the Western blotting, compared with the control group, the HMGB1 protein expression significantly decreased in the PANC-1 group after the transfection of mi R-218 mimic for 48 h(P<0.01).Conclusions: The mi R-218 expression decreases in human PCT and cell lines. mi R-218 can negatively regulate the HMGB1 protein expression and inhibit the proliferation and invasion of pancreatic cancer cells. | 9 | Evolution of permafrost in China during the last 20 ka显示文摘The formation and evolution of permafrost in China during the last 20 ka were reconstructed on the basis of large amount of paleo-permafrost remains and paleo-periglacial evidence, as well as paleo-glacial landforms, paleo-flora and paleofauna records. The results indicate that, during the local Last Glacial Maximum(LLGM) or local Last Permafrost Maximum(LLPMax), the extent of permafrost of China reached 5.3×106-5.4×106 km2, or thrice that of today, but permafrost shrank to only0.80×106-0.85×106 km2, or 50% that of present, during the local Holocene Megathermal Period(LHMP), or the local Last Permafrost Minimum(LLPMin). On the basis of the dating of periglacial remains and their distributive features, the extent of permafrost in China was delineated for the two periods of LLGM(LLPMax) and LHMP(LLPMin), and the evolution of permafrost in China was divided into seven periods as follows:(1) LLGM in Late Pleistocene(ca. 20000 to 13000-10800 a BP)with extensive evidence for the presence of intensive ice-wedge expansion for outlining its LLPMax extent;(2) A period of dramatically changing climate during the early Holocene(10800 to 8500-7000 a BP) when permafrost remained relatively stable but with a general trend of shrinking areal extent;(3) The LHMP in the Mid-Holocene(8500-7000 to 4000-3000 a BP)when permafrost degraded intensively and extensively, and shrank to the LLPMin;(4) Neoglaciation during the late Holocene(4000-3000 to 1000 a BP, when permafrost again expanded;(5) Medieval Warming Period(MWP) in the late Holocene(1000-500 a BP) when permafrost was in a relative decline;(6) Little Ice Age(LIA) in the late Holocene(500-100 a BP), when permafrost relatively expanded, and;(7) Recent warming(during the 20 th century), when permafrost continuously degraded and still is degrading. | 11 | High-performance asymmetric electrodes photodiode based on Sb/WSe2 heterostructure显示文摘Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdWs) metal-semiconductor heterostructures with atomically sharp interface and matched work functions have recently attracted great attention due to their unique electronic and optoelectronic properties. Here we report the vapor phase epitaxial growth of large-scale vertical Sb/WSe2 metal-semiconductor vdWs heterostructures with uniform stacking orientation. Compared with the growth on S1O2/S1 substrate, the thick ness of Sb nan osheet on WSe2 can be reduced effectively to mono layer. We con struct Sb-WSe2-Au asymmetric electrodes photodiode based on the Sb/WSe2 heterostructures. Electrical transport measurements indicate that the photodiode show obvious rectifying effect. Optoelectronic characterizations show prominent photoresponse with a high photoresposivity of 364 mA/W, a fast response time of less than 8 ms, a large open-circuit voltage of 0.27 V and a maximum electrical power output of 0.11 nW. | 13 | Anomalously low ozone of 1997 and 2011 Arctic spring: Monitoring results and analysis显示文摘Total ozone observations from the Total Ozone Unit (TOU) aboard the Chinese second generation polar orbiting mete- orological satellite, Fengyun-3/A (FY-3/A), revealed that total column ozone over the Arctic declined rapidly from the beginning of March 2011. An extensive region of low column amount formed around mid March; monthly mean total column ozone in March 2011 was about 30% lower than the average observed during 1979-2010. Daily total column density of ozone near the center of low ozone area in mid March was less than 240 Dobson units, about half the total column ozone amount observed during the same period of the prior 10 years. We analyzed total column ozone data from different satellites during 1979-2011. Results show that the Arctic depletion of ozone in spring 2011 was initiated by the cold polar vortex in the lower stratosphere. The March mean total ozone over the Arctic has shown a decreasing trend over the past 32 years, and its variation is strongly correlated with the polar vortex. | 15 | Changes in Aridity in Response to the Global Warming Hiatus显示文摘The global warming slowdown or warming hiatus, began around the year 2000 and has persisted for nearly 15 years. Most studies have focused on the interpretation of the hiatus in temperature. In this study, changes in a global aridity index(AI) were analyzed by using a newly developed dynamical adjustment method that can successfully identify and separate dynamically induced and radiatively forced aridity changes in the raw data. The AI and Palmer Drought Severity Index produced a wetting zone over the mid-to-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere in recent decades. The dynamical adjustment analysis suggested that this wetting zone occurred in response to the global warming hiatus. The dynamically induced AI(DAI) played a major role in the AI changes during the hiatus period,and its relationships with the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO), and Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation(AMO) also indicated that different phases of the NAO, PDO, and AMO contributed to different performances of the DAI over the Northern Hemisphere. Although the aridity wetting over the mid-to-high latitudes may relieve long-term drying in certain regions, the hiatus is temporary, and so is the relief. | 16 | Decadal variations in the season advancement of spring water cycle over Eastern China显示文摘Spring is the critical period for atmospheric circulation transition from winter to summer.The spring water cycle is very im-portant to agriculture in planting crop and the initial growth of crop.Note that there was a significant abrupt decadal change in the water budget increase during early spring over eastern China in the late 1970s.Studied here are the decadal variations of water budgets over the key regions and the associated change of water cycle over East Asia and atmospheric circulation over Asia-West Pacific region in early spring,using the observed(OBS) precipitation,the ECMWF(ERA) and NCEP/NCAR rea-nalysis(NRA),and the Mantua's Pacific decadal oscillation index(PDOI).The water budget increments from March to April exhibited a sharp decrease over the key region around Huaihe River basin(HHR)(111°-120°E;31°-36°N) after year 1978.Before 1977 the water vapor flux through south boundary of the HHR region increased greatly during March to April by 1.52 mm d 1 in ERA and 1.88 mm d 1 in NRA.Concurrently the moisture convergence and precipitation over the region also in-creased greatly.The increment for the moisture convergence was 1.11 mm d 1 in ERA and 1.22 mm d 1 in NRA,and for the precipitation was 1.08 mm d 1 in observation and 1.05 mm d 1 in ERA.April was the time that the water budgets over HHR increased most rapidly before 1977.But after 1978 the water budgets decreased conversely from Mach to April.The water vapor flux increment through the south boundary was 0.03 mm d 1 in ERA and 0.01 mm d 1 in NRA,the moisture conver-gence increment was 0.91 mm d 1 in ERA and 0.53 mm d 1 in NRA,and precipitation increment was 0.08 mm d 1 in ob-servation and 0.15 mm d 1 in ERA.Further investigation has shown that the large-scale atmospheric circulation in the early spring has correspondingly changed significantly after the late 1970s.During March to April,the weakening of the trough over East Asia became significantly slower,and the strengthening of the ridge over the west China became significantly faster in the middle troposphere after the late 1970s.At the same time,in the lower troposphere,the strengthening and northward extending of the west part of the subtropical high and the weakening of the trough over the southwest part of the Aleutian low in the early spring became slower,and the weakening of the main part of Asian high became slower,but the strengthening of its west part became faster.This significant decadal change of circulation caused a sharp decrease in the northward extending speed of wa-ter vapor transport,and in the water budgets increasing speed over the southeastern China during early spring after the late 1970s. | ZHAO RuiXia ZHANG Hong WU GuoXiong LI WeiPing SHI AiLi | 2012 | Science China Earth Sciences2012,55,8: | 4 |

And long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play pivotal roles in the development of different types of cancers. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of lncRNA maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3) in the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma. Expression of MEG3 in tumor tissues and adjacent healthy tissues of hepatocellular carcinoma patients, as well as the serum of both hepatocellular carcinoma patients and healthy controls, was detected by quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that expression level of MEG3 was significantly lower in tumor tissues than in adjacent healthy tissues. Serum level of MEG3 was also significantly lower in hepatocellular carci noma patients tha n in normal controls. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic value of MEG3 for hepatocellular carcinoma, and the prognostic value of MEG3 for this disease was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method. The results indicated that serum level of MEG3 was a diagnostic and prognostic marker for hepatocellular carcinoma. We also found that MEG3 small interfering Ribonucleic Acid (siRNA) silencing promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasi on of hepatocellular carci noma cells by CCK-8 assay, transwell migration, and invasion assay, respectively, while TGF-β inhibitor treatment reduced those enhancing effects. MEG3 siRNA silencing also increased the expression level of TGF-β1. | 19 | Human amnion tissue injected with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells repairs damaged sciatic nerves in rats显示文摘Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells,incorporated into an amnion carrier tubes,were assessed for nerve regeneration potential in a rat nerve defect model.Damaged nerves were exposed to human amnion carriers containing either human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (cell transplantation group)or saline(control group).At 8,12,16 and 20 weeks after cell implantation,the sciatic functional index was higher in the cell transplantation group compared with the control group.Furthermore,electrophysiological examination showed that threshold stimulus and maximum stimulus intensity gradually decreased while compound action potential amplitude gradually increased.Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed that regenerating nerve fibers were arranged in nerve tracts in the cell transplantation group and connective tissue between nerve tracts and amnion tissue reduced over time.Gastrocnemius muscle cell diameter,wet weight and restoration ratio were increased.These data indicate that transplanted human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells,using the amnion tube connection method,promote restoration of damaged sciatic nerves in rats. | Dehua Li Changhui Wang Wei Shan Ruixia Zeng Yan Fang Pan Wang | 2012 | Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,23: | 4 |
| 20 | Biodegradation of heavy oils by halophilic bacterium显示文摘A halophilic bacterial strain TM-1 was isolated from the reservoir of the Shengli oil field in East China. Strain TM-1, which was found to be able to degrade crude oils, is a gram-positive non-motile bacterium with a coccus shape that can grow at temperatures of up to 58 °C and in 18% NaCl solution. Depending on the culture conditions, the organism may occur in tetrads. In addition, strain TM-1 produced acid from glucose without gas formation and was catalase-negative. Furthermore, strain TM-1 was found to be a facultative aerobe capable of growth under anaerobic conditions. Moreover, it produced butylated hydroxytoluene, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid-bis ester and dibutyl phthalate and could use different organic substrates. Laboratory studies indicated that strain TM-1 affected different heavy oils by degrading various components and by changing the chemical properties of the oils.
