| 1 | Characterization of chickpea germplasm conserved in the Indian National Genebank and development of a core set using qualitative and quantitative trait data显示文摘Chickpea is the third most important pulse crop as a source of dietary protein. Ever-increasing demand in Asian countries calls for breeding superior desi-type varieties, in turn necessitating the availability of characterized germplasm to breeders. The Indian National Genebank, located at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi, conserves 14,651 accessions of chickpea. The entire set was characterized in a single large-scale experiment.High variation was observed for eight quantitative and 12 qualitative agro-morphological traits. Allelic richness procedure was employed to assemble a core set comprising 1103 accessions, 70.0% of which were of Indian origin. Comparable values of total variation explained by the first three principal components in the entire collection(51.1%) and the core(52.4%)together with conservation of nine pairwise r values among quantitative traits in the core collection and a coincidence rate around 99.7% indicated that the chickpea core was indeed an excellent representation of the entire chickpea collection in the National Genebank. The chickpea core exhibited greater diversity than the entire collection in agro-morphological traits, as assessed by higher variance and Shannon–Weaver diversity indices, indicating that the chickpea core maximized the phenotypic diversity available in the Indian chickpea germplasm. The chickpea core, comprising mainly indigenous desi genotypes, is expected to be an excellent resource for chickpea breeders. | 2 | Spatio-temporal variation and propagation direction of coal fire in Jharia Coalfield,India by satellite-based multi-temporal night-time land surface temperature imaging显示文摘In this paper, the spatio-temporal variation and propagation direction of coal fire were studied in the Jharia Coalfield(JCF),India during 2006–2015 through satellite-based night-time land surface temperature(LST)imaging. The LST was retrieved from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer(ASTER)night-time thermal-infrared data by a robust split-window algorithm based on scene-specific regression coefficients,band-specific hybrid emissivity, and night-time atmospheric transmittance. The LST-profile-based coal fire detection algorithm was formulated through statistical analysis of the LST values along multiple transects across diverse coal fire locations in the JCF in order to compute date-specific threshold temperatures for separating thermally-anomalous and background pixels. This algorithm efficiently separates surface fire, subsurface fire, and thermally-anomalous transitional pixels.During the observation period,it was noticed that the coal fire area increased significantly, which resulted from new coal fire at many places owing to extensive opencast-mining operations. It was observed that the fire propagation occurred primarily along the dip direction of the coal seams. At places,lateral-propagation of limited spatial extent was also observed along the strike direction possibly due to spatial continuity of the coal seams along strike. Moreover, the opencast-mining activities carried out during 2009–2015 and the structurally weak planes facilitated the fire propagation. | Narendra Singh R.S.Chatterjee Dheeraj Kumar D.C.Panigrahi | 2021 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2021,31,5: | 4 |

| 4 | Achievements and prospects of grass pea(Lathyrus sativus L.) improvement for sustainable food production显示文摘Grass pea offers an attractive choice for sustainable food production, owing to its intrinsic properties including limited water requirement and drought tolerance. However, low productivity and the presence of a neurotoxin(ODAP) have posed major obstacles to its genetic improvement. Also, biotechnological investments remain limited and the genome is complex and not well understood. Strategies that allow identification of genotypes with reduced ODAP content, coupling of low ODAP content with enhanced yield, and effective seed detoxification methods merit immediate attention. Breeder-friendly genomic tools are being increasingly made available to improve the efficiency of breeding protocols. To this end, the application of next-generation sequencing has provided a means of leveraging the repertoire of genomic resources for this somewhat neglected crop. In this review, we describe progress achieved in Lathyrus genetic improvement. We also explore potential opportunities in Lathyrus research and identify urgent research needs. | Girish Prasad Dixit Ashok Kumar Parihar Abhishek Bohra Narendra Pratap Singh | 2016 | The Crop Journal2016,4,5: | 3 |

| 6 | Draft genome sequence of a less-known wild Vigna: Beach pea(V. marina cv. ANBp-14-03)显示文摘Beach pea or beach cowpea(Vigna marina(Burm.)Merr.)belongs to the family Fabaceae. It is a close relative of cultivated Vigna species such as adzuki bean(V.angularis),cowpea(V.unguiculata),mung bean(V.radiata),and blackgram(V.mungo),and is distributed throughout the tropics. With its ability to tolerate salt stress, beach pea has great potential to contribute salt-tolerance genes for developing salt-tolerant cultivars in cultivated Vigna species. However,it is still underutilized in Vigna breeding programs.A draft genome sequence of beach pea was generated using a high-throughput next-generation sequencing platform, yielding 23.7 Gb of sequence from 79,929,868 filtered reads.A de novo genome assembly containing 68,731 scaffolds gave an N50 length of 10,272 bp and the assembled sequences totaled 365.6 Mb.A total of 35,448 SSRs,including 3574 compound SSRs,were identified and primer pairs for most of these SSRs were designed.Genome analysis identified 50,670 genes with mean coding sequence length 1042 bp.Phylogenetic analysis revealed highest sequence similarity with V.angularis, followed by V.radiata.Comparison with the V.angularis genome revealed 16,699 SNPs and 2253 InDels and comparison with the V.radiata genome revealed 17,538 SNPs and 2300 InDels. To our knowledge this is the first draft genome sequence of beach pea derived from an accession(ANBp-14-03)adapted locally in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. The draft genome sequence may facilitate the genetic enhancement in cultivated Vigna species. | Awnindra Kumar Singh A.Velmurugan Debjyoti Sen Gupta Jitendra Kumar Ravi Kesari Aravind Konda Narendra Pratap Singh Sibnarayan Dam Roy Utpal Biswas R.Rahul Kumar Sanjay Singh | 2019 | The Crop Journal2019,7,5: | 2 |
