1Moringa oleifera:A review on nutritive importance and its medicinal application显示文摘Moringa oleifera,native to India,grows in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.It is commonly known as‘drumstick tree’or‘horseradish tree’.Moringa can withstand both severe drought and mild frost conditions and hence widely cultivated across the world.With its high nutritive values,every part of the tree is suitable for either nutritional or commercial purposes.The leaves are rich in minerals,vitamins and other essential phytochemicals.Extracts from the leaves are used to treat malnutrition,augment breast milk in lactating mothers.It is used as potential antioxidant,anticancer,anti-inflammatory,antidiabetic and antimicrobial agent.M.oleifera seed,a natural coagulant is extensively used in water treatment.The scientific effort of this research provides insights on the use of moringa as a cure for diabetes and cancer and fortification of moringa in commercial products.This review explores the use of moringa across disciplines for its medicinal value and deals with cultivation,nutrition,commercial and prominent pharmacological properties of this“Miracle Tree”.Lakshmipriya Gopalakrishnan Kruthi Doriya Devarai Santhosh Kumar 2016Food Science and Human Wellness2016,5,2:36
2Protective effect of lemongrass oil against dexamethasone induced hyperlipidemia in rats:possible role of decreased lecithin cholesterol acetyl transferase activity显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of lemongrass oil against in dexamethasone induced hyperlipidemia in rats.Methods:Administration of dexamethasone was given at 10 mg/kg,sc.to the adult rats for 8 d induces hyperlipidemia characterized by marked increase in serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels along with increase in atherogenic index.Results:Lemongrass oil(100 and 200 mg/kg,po.) treatment has showed significant inhibition against dexamethasone hyperlipidemia by maintaining the serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and atherogenic index near to the normal levels and the antihyperlipidemic effect of the lemongross oil was comparable with atorvastatin 10 mg/kg,po.The possible mechanism may be associated with decrease in lecithin cholesterol acetyl transferase(LCAT) activity.Conclusions:These results suggested that Lemon gross oil possess significant antihyperlipidemic activity.VR Santhosh Kumar Md Naseeruddin Inamdar Nayeemunnisa GL Viswanatha 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,8:8
3Imaging of the temporomandibular joint: An update显示文摘Imaging of the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) is continuously evolving with advancement of imaging technologies. Many different imaging modalities are currently used to evaluate the TMJ. Magnetic resonance imaging is commonly used for evaluation of the TMJ due to its superior contrast resolution and its ability to acquire dynamic imaging for demonstration of the functionality of the joint. Computed tomography and ultrasound imaging have specific indication in imaging of the TMJ. This article focuses on state of the art imaging of the temporomandibular joint. Relevant normal anatomy and biomechanics of movement of the TMJ are discussed for better understanding of many TMJ pathologies. Imaging of internal derangements is discussed in detail. 5Preparation and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite-Coated Selenium Nanoparticles and their Interaction with Osteosarcoma(SaOS-2) Cells显示文摘Nanotechnology has taken a firm step to revolutionize the field of orthopedic implants. Current research on bone implants focuses to develop implants with multifaceted functions viz., osteoinduction, chemoprevention, antimicrobial action etc., especially for cancerous bone resection. The objective of the present study was to synthesize a novel composite for bone implants, possessing the above properties. Selenium was selected owing to its chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic properties. Hydroxyapatite was selected owing to its bioactivity and similarity in composition to bone mineral properties. Selenium nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method and coated with hydroxyapatite.Hydroxyapatite-coated selenium nanoparticle(HASnp) was characterized physico-chemically using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.HASnp was analysed in vitro using SaOS-2 cell line. Enhanced cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity were observed in HASnp-treated cells. 7Investigation of ductile iron casting process parameters using Taguchi approach and response surface methodology显示文摘To find the optimized levels of various casting parameters in the ductile iron casting, various casting defects and the rejection rate were observed from a medium scale foundry. The controlled values of different casting parameters such as pouring temperature, inoculation, carbon equivalent, moisture content, green compression strength, permeability and mould hardness were selected. Three different melts of metal with 0.4wt.%, 0.6wt.%, and 0.8wt.% inoculation(Fe-Si-Mg alloy and post inoculant) were produced using a 1-ton capacity coreless medium frequency induction furnace. L-27 orthogonal array with 3-level settings were chosen for the analysis. Responses for each run were observed. The signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio for each run was calculated using the Taguchi approach, and the optimized levels of different casting parameters were identified based on the S/N ratio. The analysis of variance for the casting acceptance percentage concludes that inoculation is the most significant factor affecting the castings' quality with a contribution percentage of 44%; an increase in inoculation results in a significant improvement in acceptance percentage of ductile iron castings. 8Genotype phenotype correlation in Wilson's disease within families-a report on four south Indian families显示文摘AIM: To study the genotype phenotype correlation in Wilson's disease (WD) patients within families. METHODS: We report four unrelated families from South India with nine members affected with WD. Phenotype was classified as per international consensus phenotypic classifi cation of WD. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and 21 exons of ATP7B gene and flanking introns were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR products were screened for mutations and the aberrant products noted on screening were sequenced. RESULTS: Four separate ATP7B mutations were found in the four families. ATP7B mutations were identical amongst affected members within each family. Three families had homozygous mutations of ATP7B gene while one family had compound heterozygous mutation, of which only one mutation was identifi ed. We noted concordance between ATP7B gene mutation and Wilson's disease phenotype amongst members within each family. The age of onset of symptoms or of detection of asymptomatic disease, baseline serum ceruloplasmin and baseline urinary copper levels were also similar in affected members of each family. Minor differences in phenotype and baseline serum ceruloplasmin level were noted in one family.CONCLUSION: We report concordance between ATP7B mutation and WD phenotype within each family with > 1 member affected with WD. Homozygous ATP7B mutation was present in 3 of the 4 families studied. Our report supports allelic dominance as a determinant of WD phenotype. 12Molecular characterization of antimicrobial multi-drug resistance in non-typhoidal Salmonellae from chicken and clam in Mangalore, India显示文摘Salmonella enterica has been documented as one of the leading causes of salmonellosis throughout the world and is most commonly associated with the consumption of contaminated food products. Thus, this research was aimed at studying the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and detection of quinolone resistance in Salmonella spp isolated from food of animal origin. Thirty-six Salmonella isolates comprising 8 from poultry and 28 from seafood(clams) were identified, serotyped and characterized for their antimicrobial susceptibility against 10 different antibiotics. Plasmid DNA was isolated from all the isolates by alkaline lysis, quinolone resistant non-typhoidal S. Weltevreden were examined for mutation in the DNA gyrase coding gene. Among the 36 Salmonella isolates, 20 were S. weltevreden(8 from poultry and 12 from seafood) and 16 were S. Typhimurium(from seafood). All the isolates showed multiple resistance to nalidixic acid, tetracycline, co-trimoxazole and nitrofurantoin, but, interestingly, the isolates were 100% susceptible to ampicillin, chloramphenicol and gentamicin. Resistant isolates from the study carried the genes responsible for resistance to respective antibiotics. The strain S130 isolated in the study showed single point mutation,Asp87Gly, at position 87 in quinolone resistance determining region. It revealed mutation in quinolone resistance determining region as a cause for quinolone resistance in non-typhoidal Salmonellae. 14Identification of necrophagous fly species from 12 different cities in China using ISSR and SCAR markers显示文摘Objective:To identify necrophagous fly speies from different regions in China using inter simple sequenc repeat(ISSR) and sequence-characterized amplified region(SCAR) melocular markers and to analyze their gene difference and genetic relationship.Methods:Five carrion fly species were collected from 12 cities and regions in China,including Musca domestica(M.domestica), Lucilia sericata(L.sericata),Chrysomya megacephala(C.megacephala),Helicophagella melanura(H.melanura),Boethcherisca peregrina,and they were studied using ISSR and SCAR markers.Results:Eight ISSR primers were used for amplification of 121 samples.679 clear and stable bands were identified,of which 516 bands were polymorphic.Several species-specific ISSR fragment were cloned and sequenced as an initial effort to derive the SCAR markers.Using M.domestica SCAR specific primers,SCAR-PCR amplification was performed for 8 M.domestca population sample DNA from different regions in China as well as L sericata,C.megacephala, H.melanura and Lucillia cupirina.The result showed only M.domestica produced specificalty 600 bp fragment,but L sericata,C.megacephala,H.melanura and Lucillia cupirina did not produce the same specific fragment.Clustering analysis showed clustering of most flies of M. domestica,C.megacephala and L sericata.M.domestica samples from different regions in China yielded different banding patterns.Conclusions:Application of ISSR-PCR and SCAR markers to identify necrophagous fly species from 12 cities and regions in China is first reported.ISSR-PCR and SCAR markers provide a quick reliable molecular marker technique for the identification of different species of necrophagous fly.Xueli Zheng Jialin Hu Santhosh Puthiya Kunnon Chen Xiaoguang 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,7:2
