1Acupuncture at Waiguan(SJ5) and sham points influences activation of functional brain areas of ischemic stroke patients: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study显示文摘Most studies addressing the specificity of meridians and acupuncture points have focused mainly on the different neural effects of acupuncture at different points in healthy individuals. This study examined the effects of acupuncture on brain function in a pathological context. Sixteen patients with ischemic stroke were randomly assigned to true point group(true acupuncture at right Waiguan(SJ5)) and sham point group(sham acupuncture). Results of functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed activation in right parietal lobe(Brodmann areas 7 and 19), the right temporal lobe(Brodmann area 39), the right limbic lobe(Brodmann area 23) and bilateral occipital lobes(Brodmann area 18). Furthermore, inhibition of bilateral frontal lobes(Brodmann area 4, 6, and 45), right parietal lobe(Brodmann areas 1 and 5) and left temporal lobe(Brodmann area 21) were observed in the true point group. Activation in the precuneus of right parietal lobe(Brodmann area 7) and inhibition of the left superior frontal gyrus(Brodmann area 10) was observed in the sham group. Compared with sham acupuncture, acupuncture at Waiguan in stroke patients inhibited Brodmann area 5 on the healthy side. 2Single-cell transcriptomic atlas of primate cardiopulmonary aging显示文摘Aging is a major risk factor for many diseases,especially in highly prevalent cardiopulmonary comorbidities and infectious diseases including Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19).Resolving cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with aging in higher mammals is therefore urgently needed.Here,we created young and old non-human primate single-nucleus/cell transcriptomic atlases of lung,heart and artery,the top tissues targeted by SARS-CoV-2.Analysis of cell type-specific aging-associated transcriptional changes revealed increased systemic inflammation and compromised virus defense as a hallmark of cardiopulmonary aging.With age,expression of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)was increased in the pulmonary alveolar epithelial barrier,cardiomyocytes,and vascular endothelial cells.We found that interleukin 7(IL7)accumulated in aged cardiopulmonary tissues and induced ACE2 expression in human vascular endothelial cells in an NF-κB-dependent manner.Furthermore,treatment with vitamin C blocked IL7-induced ACE2 expression.Altogether,our findings depict the first transcriptomic atlas of the aged primate cardiopulmonary system and provide vital insights into age-linked susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2,suggesting that geroprotective strategies may reduce COVID-19 severity in the elderly.Shuai Ma Shuhui Sun Jiaming Li Yanling Fan Jing Qu Liang Sun Si Wang Yiyuan Zhang Shanshan Yang Zunpeng Liu Zeming Wu Sheng Zhang Qiaoran Wang Aihua Zheng Shuguang Duo Yang Yu Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte Piu Chan Qi Zhou Moshi Song Weiqi Zhang Guang-Hui Liu 2021Cell Research2021,31,4:10
3Acupuncture at Waiguan (TE5) influences activation/deactivation of functional brain areas in ischemic stroke patients and healthy people A functional MRI study显示文摘In the present study, 10 patients with ischemic stroke in the left hemisphere and six healthy controls were subjected to acupuncture at right Waiguan (TE5). In ischemic stroke subjects, functional MRI showed enhanced activation in Broadmann areas 5, 6, 7, 18, 19, 24, 32, the hypothalamic inferior lobe, the mamillary body, and the ventral posterolateral nucleus of the left hemisphere, and Broadmann areas 4, 6, 7, 18, 19 and 32 of the right hemisphere, but attenuated activation of Broadmann area 13, the hypothalamic inferior lobe, the posterior lobe of the tonsil of cerebellum, and the culmen of the anterior lobe of hypophysis, in the left hemisphere and Broadmann area 13 in the right hemisphere. In ischemic stroke subjects, a number of deactivated brain areas were enhanced, including Broadmann areas 6, 11, 20, 22, 37, and 47, the culmen of the anterior lobe of hypophysis, alae lingulae cerebella, and the posterior lobe of the tonsil of cerebellum of the left hemisphere, and Broadmann areas 8, 37, 45 and 47, the culmen of the anterior lobe of hypophysis, pars tuberalis adenohypophyseos, inferior border of lentiform nucleus, lateral globus pallidus, inferior temporal gyrus, and the parahippocampal gyrus of the right hemisphere. These subjects also exhibited attenuation of a number of deactivated brain areas, including Broadmann area 7. These data suggest that acupuncture at Waiguan specifically alters brain function in regions associated with sensation, vision, and motion in ischemic stroke patients. 4Acupuncture/electroacupuncture enhances antidepressant effect of Seroxat:the Symptom Checklist-90 scores显示文摘One hundred and five patients with primary unipolar depression were randomly divided into three groups: drug group(Seroxat administration), acupuncture group(Seroxat plus acupuncture), and electroacupuncture group(Seroxat plus acupuncture plus electroacupuncture). Patients' symptoms were evaluated using a psychometric questionnaire, the Symptom Checklist-90, before intervention and after 2, 4, 6 and 10 weeks of treatment. The individual factor scores and the total score from the Symptom Checklist-90 reduced in all three groups as treatment progressed. In the acupuncture and electroacupuncture groups, the total score and the factor scores for obsessive-compulsive symptoms, depression, and anxiety were significantly lower than those in the drug group. There was no significant difference in the factor scores or total scores between the acupuncture and electroacupuncture groups. Some factor scores in the electroacupuncture group, such as somatization, depression, hostility, and phobic anxiety, were increased at 10 weeks compared with the respective score immediately after the course of electroacupuncture at 6 weeks. Our findings indicate that administration of Seroxat alone or in combination with acupuncture/electroacupuncture can produce a significant effect in patients with primary unipolar depression. 6Recent advances of carbon dots as new antimicrobial agents显示文摘Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,many rapid antimicrobial agents have developed intensively.Carbon dots(CDs),a new type of carbon-based nanomaterials,shows great potential against emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial-resistant infections due to their unique optical properties,excellent biocompatibility,and easy surface modification.With the definition of the CDs structure and properties,synthesis,and characteristic technology improvement,the research on the CDs as antimicrobial agents has made significant progress.However,the lack of high repeatable and exact preparation methods,and the regular antimicrobial activity make it far from practical application.In this review,we summarize the most recent progress and challenges of CDs antimicrobial.First,an overview of the characteristics and properties is given,and the advantage of CDs applied to antimicrobial is further discussed.Then,it focuses on research progress on antimicrobial mechanisms under different conditions,the critical factors affecting their antimicrobial activity,and the practical antimicrobial applications.Finally,the main challenges and future research perspectives of antimicrobial CDs are proposed.Pengfei Li Lu Sun Shanshan Xue Dan Qu Li An Xiayan Wang Zaicheng Sun 2022SmartMat2022,3,2:3
7Improvement in quality of life in depressed patients following verum acupuncture or electroacupuncture plus paroxetine:A randomized controlled study of 157 cases显示文摘Depressed patients with scores of 17 or more on the 17 items of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale were treated with the antidepressant drug paroxetine. They also underwent verum acupuncture or electroacupuncture at Baihui (GV20) and Yintang (GV29). The World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Brief Version showed a significant increase in the total scores of patients who underwent verum acupuncture and electroacupuncture for 6 weeks compared with those who were given paroxetine only; significantly increased physical domain and social relationship scores in verum acupuncture patients compared with paroxetine only; and significantly elevated psychological domain scores with electroacupuncture compared with paroxetine only. 8Needling at the Waiguan (SJ5) in healthy limbs deactivated functional brain areas in ischemic stroke patients A functional magnetic resonance imaging study显示文摘Deactivation is common in cerebral functional imaging. However, the physiological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon remain poorly understood. The present study analyzed 12 ischemic stroke patients, who were randomly assigned to two groups: one group underwent sham needling and true needling at the Waiguan (SJ 5) in the healthy upper limb and the other group underwent sham and true needling at a sham point. Functional magnetic resonance imaging results showed no activation points in brain tissues following needling at SJ 5. However, compared with sham needling at SJ 5, true needling at SJ 5 deactivated Broadmann 4, 6, 24, and 32 areas. In addition, compared to needling at the sham point, true needling at SJ 5 deactivated bilateral hypothalamus. 10Soil phyllosilicate and iron oxide inhibit the quorum sensing of Chromobacterium violaceum显示文摘Microorganisms respond to various adverse environmental conditions and regulate different physiological functions by secreting and sensing signal molecules through quorum sensing(QS)systems.Phyllosilicates and iron oxides present in soils and sediments may have substantial impact on bacterial activity and QS due to their unique reactivity and close association with microorganisms.This research explored the effect of goethite,montmorillonite and kaolinite(0.05–2gL^(–1))on the growth and QS of a bacterial model,Chromobacterium violaceum.The results showed that kaolinite and goethite caused cellular damage at low mineral concentrations.The capacity for violacein production and biofilm formation of C.violaceum were inhibited by the minerals in the order of kaolinite>goethite>montmorillonite.The possible underlying mechanisms for QS inhibition by different minerals were investigated.Specifically,kaolinite repressed QS function through downregulation the expression of signal molecules synthesis gene cviI.Goethite and montmorillonite interfered with QS by adsorption of extracellular signal molecules.This work provides a better understanding of the interactions between bacteria and minerals and proposed that the inhibition of QS system is an ignored mechanism for bacterial toxicity by phyllosilicates and iron oxides.Shanshan Yang Chenchen Qu Manisha Mukherjee Yichao Wu Qiaoyun Huang Peng Cai 2021Soil Ecology Letters2021,3,1:2

20Single-nucleus transcriptomics reveals a gatekeeper role for FoxP1 in primate cardiac aging显示文摘Aging poses a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases,the leading cause of death in the aged population.However,the cell type-specific changes underlying cardiac aging are far from being clear.Here,we performed single-nucleus RNA-sequencing analysis of left ventricles from young and aged cynomolgus monkeys to define cell composition changes and transcriptomic alterations across different cell types associated with age.We found that aged cardiomyocytes underwent a dramatic loss in cell numbers and profound fluctuations in transcriptional profles.Via transcription regulatory network analysis,we identified FOxP1,a core transcription factor in organ development,as a key downregulated factor in aged cardiomyocytes,concomitant with the dysregulation of FoxP1 target genes associated with heart function and cardiac diseases.Consistently,the deficiency of FOxP1 led to hypertrophic and senescent phenotypes in human embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes.Altogether,our findings depict the celiular and molecular landscape of ventricular aging at the single-cell resolution,and identify drivers for primate cardiac aging and potential targets for intervention against cardiac aging and associated diseases.Yiyuan Zhang Yandong Zheng Si Wang Yanling Fan Yanxia Ye Yaobin Jing Zunpeng Liu Shanshan Yang Muzhao Xiong Kuan Yang Jinghao Hu Shanshan Che Qun Chu Moshi Song Guang-Hui Liu Weiqi Zhang Shuai Ma Jing Qu 2023Protein & Cell2023,14,4:0
