| 3 | Phosphorus recovery from wastewater by struvite crystallization:Property of aggregates显示文摘Struvite crystallization is a promising method to remove and recover phosphorus from wastewater to ease both the scarcity of phosphorus rock resources and water eutrophication worldwide. To date, although various kinds of reactor systems have been developed, supporting methods are required to control the struvite fines flushing out of the reactors. As an intrinsic property, aggregation is normally disregarded in the struvite crystallization process, although it is the key factor in final particle size and therefore guarantees phosphorus recovery efficiency. The present study developed a method to analyze the characteristics of struvite aggregates using fractal geometry, and the influence of operational parameters on struvite aggregation was evaluated. Due to its typical orthorhombic molecular structure, struvite particles are prone to crystallize into needle or rod shapes, and aggregate at the corners or edges of crystals. The determined fractal dimension(Dpf) of struvite aggregates was 1.52–1.31, with the corresponding range of equivalent diameter(d0.5) at 295.9–85.4 μm. Aggregates formed in relatively low phosphorus concentrations(3.0–5.0 mmol/L) and mildly alkaline conditions(pH 9.0–9.5) displayed relatively compact structures, large aggregate sizes and high aggregation strength. Increasing pH values led to continuous decrease of aggregate sizes, while the variation of Dpfwas insignificant. | 5 | Finite element investigation of the poroelastic effect on the Xinfengjiang Reservoir-triggered earthquake显示文摘Coulomb failure stress changes (ΔCFS) are used in the study of reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS) generation.The threshold value of ΔCFS that can trigger earthquakes is an important issue that deserves thorough research.The M s 6.1 earthquake in the Xinfengjiang Reservoir in 1962 is well acknowledged as the largest reservoir-induced earthquake in China.Therefore, it is a logical site for quantitative calculation of ΔCFS induced by the filling of the reservoir and for investigating the magnitude of CFS that can trigger reservoir seismic activities.To better understand the RIS mechanism, a three-dimensional poroelastic finite element model of the Xinfengjiang Reservoir is proposed here, taking into consideration of the precise topography and dynamic water level.We calculate the instant changes of stress and pore pressure induced by water load, and the time variation of effective stresses due to pore water diffusion.The CFS on the seismogenesis faults and the accumulation of strain energy in the reservoir region are also calculated.Primary results suggest that the reservoir impoundment increases both pore pressure and CFS on the fault at the focal depth.The diffusion of pore pressure was likely the main factor that triggered the main earthquake, whereas the elastic stress owing to water load was relatively small.The magnitude of CFS on seismogenesis fault can reach approximately 10 kPa, and the ΔCFS values at the hypocenter can be about 0.7-3.0 kPa, depending on the fault diffusion coefficient.The calculated maximum vertical subsidence caused by the water load in the Xinfengjiang Reservoir is 17.5 mm, which is in good agreement with the observed value of 15 mm.The accumulated strain energy owing to water load was only about 7.3×10 11 J, even less than 1% of the seismic wave energy released by the earthquake.The reservoir impoundment was the only factor that triggered the earthquake. | CHENG HuiHong ZHANG Huai ZHU BoJing SUN YuJun ZHENG Liang YANG ShaoHua SHI YaoLin | 2012 | Science China Earth Sciences2012,55,12: | 11 |

This review briefly summarizes the Chinese Antarctic scientific research and output accomplished over the past 30 years. The developments and progress in Antarctic research and the enhancement of international scientific cooperation achieved through the implementation of the CHINARE program have been remarkable. Since the 1980 s, four permanent Chinese Antarctic research stations have been established successively and 33 CHINAREs have been completed. | 7 | The origin, diversification and adaptation of a major mangrove clade (Rhizophoreae) revealed by whole-genome sequencing显示文摘Mangroves invade some very marginal habitats for woody plants—at the interface between land and sea.Since mangroves anchor tropical coastal communities globally, their origin, diversification and adaptation are of scientific significance, particularly at a time of global climate change. In this study, a combination of single-molecule long reads and the more conventional short reads are generated from Rhizophora apiculata for the de novo assembly of its genome to a near chromosome level. The longest scaffold, N50 and N90 for the R. apiculata genome, are 13.3 Mb, 5.4 Mb and 1.0 Mb, respectively. Short reads for the genomes and transcriptomes of eight related species are also generated. We find that the ancestor of Rhizophoreae experienced a whole-genome duplication ~70 Myrs ago, which is followed rather quickly by colonization and species diversification. Mangroves exhibit pan-exome modifications of amino acid(AA) usage as well as unusual AA substitutions among closely related species. The usage and substitution of AAs, unique among plants surveyed, is correlated with the rapid evolution of proteins in mangroves. A small subset of these substitutions is associated with mangroves' highly specialized traits(vivipary and red bark) thought to be adaptive in the intertidal habitats. Despite the many adaptive features, mangroves are among the least genetically diverse plants, likely the result of continual habitat turnovers caused by repeated rises and falls of sea level in the geologically recent past. | 9 | Spatiotemporal variations of deep-sea sediment components and their fluxes since the last glaciation in the northern South China Sea显示文摘Sediment components and their fluxes of Cores MD12-3428(water depth: 903 m), MD12-3433(water depth: 2125 m),and MD12-3434(water depth: 2995 m), obtained along a transect on the continental slope of the northern South China Sea, have been conducted to reveal the spatiotemporal variations and the controlling factors of the sediment components and of their fluxes.Results show that deep-sea sediments in the northern South China Sea are composed mainly of terrigenous(59–89%) and carbonate(6–38%) particles, with minor components of opal(1.6–9.4%) and organic matter(0.7–1.9%). Fluxes of terrigenous and carbonate particles reach up to 2.4–21.8 and 0.4–6.5 g cm–2 kyr–1, respectively, values that are one to two orders of magnitude higher than the fluxes of opal and organic matter. Temporal variations of the percentages and fluxes of deep-sea sediment components have displayed clear glacial-interglacial cyclicity since the last glaciation. Terrigenous, opal, and organic matter percentages and their fluxes increas clearly during marine isotope stage 2, while carbonate percentages and fluxes show an opposite variation pattern or are characterized by an unremarkable increase. This implies that deep-sea carbonate in the South China Sea is affected by the dilution of terrigenous inputs during the sea-level lowstand. With increasing water depth along the transect, the terrigenous percentage increases but with largely decreased fluxes. Both the percentage and flux of carbonate decrease, while the percentages and fluxes of opal and organic matter display much more complicated variational features. The spatiotemporal variations of deep-sea sediment components and of their fluxes since the last glaciation in the northern South China Sea are strongly controlled by sea-level fluctuations. | 16 | Three-dimensional numerical simulation of glacial trough forming process显示文摘The glacial trough is a common glacier erosion landscape, which plays an important role in the study of glacier erosion processes. In a sharp contrast with the developing river, which is generally meandering, the developing glacial trough is usually wide and straight. Is the straightness of the glacial trough just the special phenomenon of some areas or a universal feature? What controls the straightness of the glacial trough? Until now, these issues have not been studied yet. In this paper, we conduct systematic numerical models of the glacier erosion and simulate the erosion evolution process of the glacial trough. Numerical simulations show that:(1) while the meandering glacier is eroding deeper to form the U-shaped cross section, the glacier is eroding laterally. The erosion rate of the ice-facing slope is bigger than that of the back-slope.(2) The smaller(bigger) the slope is, the smaller(bigger) the glacier erosion intensity is.(3) The smaller(bigger) the ice discharge is, the smaller(bigger) the glacier erosion intensity is. In the glacier erosion process, the erosion rate of the ice-facing slope is always greater than that of the back-slope. Therefore, the glacial trough always develops into more straight form. This paper comes to the conclusion that the shape evolution of the glacial trough is controlled mainly by the erosion mechanism of the glacier. | 19 | Adjunctive sepsis therapy with aminophylline(STAP):a randomized controlled trial显示文摘Background:Sepsis is a serious disease caused by infection.Aminophylline has anti-asthma and anti-inflammatory effects.We aimed to explore the safety and effect of aminophylline in sepsis.Methods:We conducted a clinical randomized controlled trial involving 100 patients diagnosed with sepsis within 48 h after intensive care unit(ICU)admission in two sites.All patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive standard therapy with or without aminophylline.The primary clinical outcome was all-cause mortality at 28 days.Results:From September 27,2018 to February 12,2020,we screened 277 septic patients and eventually enrolled 100 patients,with 50 assigned to the aminophylline group and 50 to the usual-care group.At 28 days,7 of 50 patients(14.0%)in the aminophylline group had died,compared with 16 of 50(32.0%)in the usual-care group(P=0.032).Cox regression showed that the aminophylline group had a lower hazard of death(hazard ratio=0.312,95%confidence interval:0.129–0.753).Compared with the usual-care group,patients in the aminophylline group had a longer survival time(P=0.039 by the log-rank test).The effects of aminophylline on vasopressor dose,oxygenation index,and sequential organ failure assessment score were timedependent with treatment.There were no significant differences in total hospitalization days,ICU hospitalization days,and rates of serious adverse events(all P>0.05).No adverse events were observed in the trial.Conclusions:Aminophylline as an adjunct therapy could significantly reduce the risk of death and prolong the survival time of patients with sepsis.Trial registration:ChiCTR.org.cn,ChiCTR1800019173. | Ruifang Zhang Huan Liu Dongmei Dai Xianfei Ding Dong Wang Yan Wang Xuexiu Shi Shuguang Zhang Xiaoguang Duan Haixu Wang Yonggang Luo Shaohua Liu Bing Han Xiaojuan Zhang Yu Fang Jing Yang Wangbin Xu Tongwen Sun | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,135,23: | 2 |
| 20 | Adaptive convergence at the genomic level—prevalent,uncommon or very rare?显示文摘Convergent evolution is one of the central topics in evolutionary genetics[1].While there has been ample evidence of phenotypic convergence,the issue is whether each and any of the phenotypic convergences have an underlying cause in genic convergence[2,3].Fortunately,the torrent of genomic data has made it possible to address the issue[4-8].Convergence can happen at multiple levels of the genetic architecture.For example,many studies have reached the conclusion of genic convergence when the same gene has experienced many more amino acid(AA)changes than expected[3,9-11].Another prominent example is the TCGA(The Cancer Genome Atlas)data on the evolution of tumors,whereby convergence is defined as the sharing of mutations in the same genes,rather than the same change at the same site[12,13].Many others have further relaxed the stringency in defining convergent evolution.For example,convergence could also mean copy number or evolutionary rate changes in the same genes[14,15]. | Ziwen He Shaohua Xu Suhua Shi | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,6: | 2 |
