2Effects of water management on arsenic and cadmium speciation and accumulation in an upland rice cultivar显示文摘Pot and field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of water regimes on the speciation and accumulation of arsenic(As) and cadmium(Cd) in Brazilian upland rice growing in soils polluted with both As and Cd. In the pot experiment constant and intermittent flooding treatments gave 3–16 times higher As concentrations in soil solution than did aerobic conditions but Cd showed the opposite trend. Compared to arsenate, there were more marked changes in the arsenite concentrations in the soil solution as water management shifted, and therefore arsenite concentrations dominated the As speciation and bioavailability in the soil. In the field experiment As concentrations in the rice grains increased from 0.14 to 0.21 mg/kg while Cd concentrations decreased from 0.21 to 0.02 mg/kg with increasing irrigation ranging from aerobic to constantly flooding conditions. Among the various water regimes the conventional irrigation treatment produced the highest rice grain yield of 6.29 tons/ha. The As speciation analysis reveals that the accumulation of dimethylarsinic acid(from 11.3% to 61.7%) made a greater contribution to the increase in total As in brown rice in the intermittent and constant flooding treatments compared to the intermittent-aerobic treatment. Thus, water management exerted opposite effects on Cd and As speciation and bioavailability in the soil and consequently on their accumulation in the upland rice. 3Modeling study of residence time and water age in Dahuofang Reservoir in China显示文摘Understanding the dynamics of water renewal in a reservoir is essential when the transport and fate of dissolved substances are evaluated.A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was implemented to compute average residence time and water age in Dahuofang Reservoir in China.The model was verified for a one-year time period in 2006.A simulation reproduced intra-annual variation of mixing represented by the fall/winter mixing and the spring/summer stratification.The simulated variation of vertical thermal structures also matched observation.The spatially varying average residence times and age distribution were investigated through a series of numerical experiments using a passively dissolved and conservative tracer as a surrogate.Residence time estimations yield a broad range of values depending on the position.The average residence time for a tracer placed at the head of the reservoir under high-,mean-,and low flow conditions was found to be about 125,236 and 521 days,respectively.The age simulation reveals that the age distribution is a function of the freshwater discharge.In the vertical direction,the age of the surface layers is larger than that of the bottom layers and the age difference between the surface and bottom layers decreases further downstream.The density-induced circulation plays an important role in the circulation in the reservoir,and can generate vertical age distribution in the reservoir.These findings provide useful information for understanding the transport process in Dahuofang Reservoir that can be used to assist the water quality management of the reservoir.SHEN YongMing WANG JinHua ZHENG BingHui ZHEN Hong FENG Yu WANG ZaiXing YANG Xu 2011Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2011,54,1:18
4Development and validation of a three-dimensional,wave-current coupled model on unstructured meshes显示文摘Using unstructured meshes provides great flexibility for modeling the flow in complex geomorphology of tidal creeks,barriers and islands,with refined grid resolution in regions of interest and not elsewhere.In this paper,an unstructured three-dimensional fully coupled wave-current model is developed.Firstly,a parallel,unstructured wave module is developed.Variations in wave properties are governed by a wave energy equation that includes wave-current interactions and dissipation representative of wave breaking.Then,the existing Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model(FVCOM) is modified to couple with the wave module.The couple procedure includes depth dependent wave radiation stress terms,Stokes drift,vertical transfer of wave-generated pressure transfer to the mean momentum equation,wave dissipation as a source term in the turbulence kinetic energy equation,and mean current advection and refraction of wave energy.Several applications are presented to evaluate the developed model.In particular the wind and wave-induced storm surge generated by Hurricane Katrina is investigated.The obtained results have been compared to the in situ measurements with respect to the wave heights and water level elevations revealing good accuracy of the model in reproduction of the investigated events.In a comparison to water level measurements at Dauphin Island,inclusion of the wave induced water level setup reduced the normalized root mean square error from 0.301 to 0.257 m and increased the correlation coefficient from 0.860 to 0.929.Several runs were carried out to analyze the effects of waves.The experiments show that among the processes that represent wave effects,radiation stress and wave-induced surface stress are more important than wave-induced bottom stress in affecting the water level.The Hurricane Katrina simulations showed the importance of the inclusion of the wave effects for the hindcast of the water levels during the storm surge.WANG JinHua SHEN YongMing 2011Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2011,54,1:16
5Numerical study of pollutant movement in waves and wave-induced long-shore currents in surf zone显示文摘Water waves,wave-induced long-shore currents and movement of pollutants in waves and currents have been numerically studied based on the hyperbolic mild-slope equation,the shallow water equation,as well as the pollutant movement equation,and the numerical results have also been validated by experimental data. It is shown that the long-shore current velocity and wave set-up increase with the increasing incident wave amplitude and slope steepness of the shore plane; the wave set-up increases with the increasing incident wave period;and the pollutant morement proceeds more quiekly with the increasing incident wave amplitude and slope steepness of the shore palane. 6Development of an integrated model system to simulate transport and fate of oil spills in seas显示文摘A three-dimensional integrated model is developed for simulating transport and final fate of oil spills in seas.The model contains two main modules,flow and transport-fate modules.The flow module uses an unstructured finite-volume wave-ocean coupling model.Using unstructured meshes provides great flexibility for modeling the flow in complex geometries of tidal creeks,barriers and islands.In the transport-fate module the oil dispersion is solved using a particle-tracking method.Horizontal diffusion is simulated using random walk techniques in a Monte Carlo framework,whereas the vertical diffusion process is solved on the basis of the Langeven equation.The model simulates the most significant processes that affect the motion of oil particles,such as advection,surface spreading,evaporation,dissolution,emulsification and turbulent diffusion as well as the interaction of the oil particles with the shoreline,sedimentation and the temporal variations of oil viscosity,density and surface tension.The model simulates either continuous or instantaneous oil spills,and also other toxic matter.This model has been applied to simulate the oil spill accident in the Bohai Sea.In comparison with the observations,the numerical results indicate that the model is reasonably accurate.WANG JinHua & SHEN YongMing State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116023,China 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,9:9
7Three-dimensional numerical modelling of water quality in Dahuofang Reservoir in China显示文摘A three-dimensional eutrophication model was applied to assist the management of Dahuofang Reservoir in China.Transport processes were obtained from the three-dimensional,finite volume hydrodynamic model.The hydrodynamic model was verified for a one-year time period in 2006.Our simulation reproduced intra-annual variation of stratification.The simulated variation of vertical thermal structures also matched observations.The water quality model included 8 state variables,including dissolved oxygen,phytoplankton as carbon,carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand,ammonium nitrogen,nitrate and nitrite nitrogen,ortho-phosphorus,organic nitrogen,and organic phosphorus.Sensitivity of the parameters has been analyzed to decide which process would affect the water quality in the simulation.The water quality verification suggested the model successfully computed the temporal cycles and spatial distributions of key water quality components.The comparison between water quality components before and after the first phase of the water conveyance project suggests that the project has a slight effect on the reservoir ecosystem.The model could be used as a tool to guide physico-biological engineering design or management strategies for Dahuofang Reservoir.WANG JinHua SHEN YongMing ZHEN Hong FENG Yu WANG ZaiXing YANG Xu 2011Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2011,54,7:7

9Three-Dimensional Tidal Model and Its Application to Numerical Simulation of Water Quality in Coastal Waters显示文摘- The turbulence mechanism plays an important part in the mixing process and momentum transfer of turbulence. A three-dimensional Prandtl mixing length tidal model has been developed to simulate tidal flows and water quality. The eddy viscosities and diffusivities are computed from the Prandtl mixing length model. In order to model the water quality of an estuary or coastal area many interdependent processes need to be simulated. These may be conveniently separated into three main groups: transport and mixing processes, biochemical interaction of water quality variables and the utilization and re-cycling of nutrients by living matter. The model simulates full oxygen and nutrient balance, primary productivity and the transport, reaction mechanism and fate of pollutants over tidal time-scales. 13Effects of sea level rise on storm surge and waves within the Yangtze River Estuary显示文摘Sea level rise (SLR) can cause water depth increase (WDI) and coastal inundation (CI).By applying the coupled FVCOM + SWAN model,this study investigates the potential impacts of WDI and CI,induced by a 1.0 m SLR,on storm surge and waves within the Yangtze River Estuary.A 1.0 m WDI decreases the maximum storm surge by 0.15 m and increases the maximum significant wave height by 0.35 m.The CI effect size is smaller when compared with WDI.CI decreases the maximum storm surge and significant wave height by 0.04 and 0.07 m,respectively.In the near-shore area,WDI significantly alters the local hydrodynamic environment,thereby stimulating changes in maximum storm surges and wave heights.Low-lying regions are negatively impacted by CI.Conversely,in deep-water areas,the relative change in water depth is minimal and the effect of CI is gradually enhanced.The combined effect of WDI and CI decreases the maximum surge by 0.31 m and increases the maximum significant wave height by 0.21 m.As a result,CI may be neglected when designing deep-water infrastructures.Nonetheless,the complex interactions between adoption and neglect of CI should be simulated to achieve the best seawall flood control standards and design parameters.Yongming SHEN Gefei DENG Zhihao XU Jun TANG 2019Frontiers of Earth Science2019,13,2:3
14A three-dimensional solid-liquid two-phase turbulence model with the effect of vegetation in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates显示文摘A three-dimensional k-ε-Ap solid-liquid two-phase two-fluid model with the effect of vegetation is solved numerically with a finite-volume method on an adaptive grid to study water-sediment movements and bed evolution in vegetated channels. The additional drag force and additional turbulence generation due to vegetation are added to the relevant control equations for simulating the interaction between vegetation and flow. The flow structure and the bed-topography changes in a 60° partly vegetated channel bend are calculated by the model. The numerical results agree well with the measured ones. Calculated and measured results show that the primary flow velocity reduces much in the vegetation zone and increases in the non-vegetation zone, the secondary flow velocity weakens in the vegetation zone and strengthens in the non-vegetation zone, the sediment movement and bed-topography change also weaken in the vegetation zone and strengthen in the non-vegetation zone, a well-planed vegetation arrangement can improve bank stabilization program, and the k-ε-Ap model can deal with bed-load transport with a more reasonable method than the one-fluid model.LIU Cheng SHEN YongMing 2009Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2009,52,7:2

16Numerical simulation of sediment transport in coastal waves and wave-induced currents显示文摘Prediction of coastal sediment transport is of particularly importance for analyzing coast erosion accurately and solving the corresponding coast protection engineering problems.The present study provided a numerical scheme for sediment transport in coastal waves and wave-induced currents.In the scheme,the sand transport model was implemented with wave refraction-diffraction model and near-shore current model.Coastal water wave was simulated by using the parabolic mild-slope equation in which wave refraction,diffraction and breaking effects are considered.Wave-induced current was simulated by using the nonlinear shallow water equations in which wave provides radiation stresses for driving current.Then,sediment transport in waves and wave-induced currents was simulated by using the two-dimensional suspended sediment transport equations for suspended sediment and the bed-load transport equation for bed load.The numerical scheme was validated by experiment results from the Large-scale Sediment Transport Facility at the US Army Corps of Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg.The numerical results showed that the present scheme is an effective tool for modeling coastal sediment transport in waves and near-shore currents.TANG Jun LYU Yigang SHEN Yongming 2016Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,9:2
