| 1 | High prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in Crohn's disease patients according to serum retinol levels and the relative dose-response test显示文摘AIM:To assess the vitamin A status of patients with Crohn's disease(CD) by evaluating serum retinol levels and the relative dose response(RDR) test(liver retinol stores).METHODS:Vitamin A nutritional status was measured by serum retinol obtained by high performance liquid chromatography and the RDR test for evaluation of the hepatic stores.Body composition was performed by densitometry by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.Vitamin A dietary intake was assessed from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire.RESULTS:This study included 38 CD patients and 33 controls.Low serum retinol concentrations were detected in 29% of CD patients vs 15% in controls(P < 0.005).The RDR test was positive in 37% of CD patients vs 12% in controls, which indicated inadequate hepatic vitamin A stores(P < 0.005).Individuals with hypovitaminosis A had lower BMI and body fat compared with those without this deficiency. There was no association between vitamin A deficiency and its dietary intake, ileal location, presence of disease activity and prior bowel resections.CONCLUSION:Patients with CD have higher prevalence of vitamin A deficiency,as assessed by two independent methods. | Márcia Soares-Mota Tianny A Silva Luanda M Gomes Marco AS Pinto Laura MC Mendon?a Maria Lúcia F Farias Tiago Nunes Andrea Ramalho Cyrla Zaltman | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,5: | 4 |
| 2 | Assessing the relationship between the rumen microbiota and feed efficiency in Nellore steers显示文摘Background:Ruminants rely upon a complex community of microbes in their rumen to convert host-indigestible feed into nutrients. However, little is known about the association between the rumen microbiota and feed efficiency traits in Nellore(Bos indicus)cattle,a breed of major economic importance to the global beef market. Here,we compare the composition of the bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in the rumen of Nellore steers with high and low feed efficiency(FE)phenotypes,as measured by residual feed intake(RFI).Results:The Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio was significantly higher(P<0.05)in positive-RFI steers(p-RFI,low feed efficiency)than in negative-RFI(n-RFI,high feed efficiency)steers. The differences in bacterial composition from steers with high and low FE were mainly associated with members of the families Lachnospiraceae,Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae,as well as the genus Prevotella.Archaeal community richness was lower(P<0.05)in p-RFI than in n-RFI steers and the genus Methanobrevibacter was either increased or exclusive of p-RFI steers. The fungal genus Buwchfawromyces was more abundant in the rumen solid fraction of n-RFI steers(P<0.05)and a highly abundant OTU belonging to the genus Piromyces was also increased in the rumen microbiota of highefficiency steers. However, analysis of rumen fermentation variables and functional predictions indicated similar metabolic outputs for the microbiota of distinct FE groups. Conclusions:Our results demonstrate that differences in the ruminal microbiota of high and low FE Nellore steers comprise specific taxa from the bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities.Biomarker OTUs belonging to the genus Piromyces were identified in animals showing high feed efficiency, whereas among archaea,Methanobrevibacter was associated with steers classified as p-RFI.The identification of specific RFI-associated microorganisms in Nellore steers could guide further studies targeting the isolation and functional characterization of rumen microbes potentially important for the energy-harvesting efficiency of ruminants. | Déborah Romaskevis Gomes Lopes Márcio de Souza Duarte Alex J.La Reau Ibrahim Zuniga Chaves Tiago Antônio de Oliveira Mendes Edenio Detmann Cláudia Braga Pereira Bento Maria Eugênia Zerlotti Mercadante Sarah Figueiredo Martins Bonilha Garret Suen Hilário Cuquetto Mantovani | 2021 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2021,12,4: | 3 |
| 3 | Acute pancreatitis and COVID-19:A literature review显示文摘BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)is responsible for the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),and has caused more than 80 million infections and 1.7 million deaths worldwide.Although it is primarily a respiratory virus,SARS-CoV-2 also has extra-pulmonary effects.Pancreatic injury and cases of acute pancreatitis(AP)have been recognized and attributed to SARS-CoV-2,but the mechanisms of pancreatic injury are still a subject of debate. There is also controversy on whether SARS-CoV-2 can cause AP or if it is an epiphenomenon.AIM To review and to explore the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and AP,and to provide an overview of the existing literature on possible mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-induced pancreatic lesion.METHODS A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines for papers on SARS-CoV-2 infection and AP.A narrative review on possible mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-induced pancreatic lesion was also performed.RESULTS A literature review revealed a growing body of evidence on SARS-CoV-2-induced pancreatic lesions including the mechanisms of direct virus-mediated injury, systemic inflammatory response and circulating pro-inflammatory interleukins,virus-induced lipotoxicity, and drug-induced injury.A systematic review of the literature revealed 22 cases of AP in COVID-19 patients. However, limitations of the reported cases make it difficult to establish a causal relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and AP.All of the studies agreed on special monitoring and surveillance of this subset of patients due to the still unknown clinical progression, therapeutic implications, and prognosis.CONCLUSION AP should be considered in COVID-19 patients, especially in those exhibiting abdominal pain and systematic, and complete reporting of these cases should be general practice. However, there is still insufficient evidence showing that COVID-19 can cause AP or negatively impact prognosis.Additional studies are needed to clarify the relationship between these two entities and their theragnostic significance. | Tiago Correia de Sá Carlos Soares Mónica Rocha | 2021 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2021,13,6: | 2 |

| 18 | Novel synthetic opioids-toxicological aspects and analysis显示文摘Over the past few years, there has been an emerging number of new psychoactive drugs. These drugs are frequently mentioned as“legal highs”,“herbal highs”,“bath salts”and“research chemicals”.They are mostly sold and advertised on online forums and on the dark web.The emerging new psychoactive substances are designed to mimic the effects of psychoactive groups, which are often abused drugs.Novel synthetic opioids are a new trend in this context and represent an alarming threat to public health.Given the wide number of fatalities related to these compounds reported within the last few years,it is an important task to accurately identify these compounds in biologic matrices in order to administer an effective treatment and reverse the respiratory depression caused by opioid related substances.Clinicians dealing with fentanyl intoxication cases should consider that it could,in fact,be a fentanyl analogue. For this reason,it is a helpful recommendation to include synthetic opioids in the routine toxicological screening procedures, including analysis in alternative matrices,if available,to investigate poly-drug use and possible tolerance to opioids. To address this public health problem, better international collaboration, effective legislation, effective investigation, control of suspicious“research chemicals”online forums and continuous community alertness are required. This article aims to review diverse reported fatalities associated with new synthetic opioids describing them in terms of pharmacology, metabolism, posology, available forms,as well as their toxic effects, highlighting the sample procedures and analytical techniques available for their detection and quantification in biological matrices. | Inês Tabarra Sofia Soares Tiago Rosado Joana Gonçalves Àngelo Luís Sara Malaca Mário Barroso Thomas Keller José Restolho Eugenia Gallardo | 2019 | Forensic Sciences Research2019,4,2: | 1 |
