| 1 | Impact of land use conversion on soil organic carbon stocks in an agro-pastoral ecotone of Inner Mongolia显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) stocks in terrestrial ecosystems vary considerably with land use types. Grassland, forest, and cropland coexist in the agro-pastoral ecotone of Inner Mongolia, China. Using SOC data compiled from literature and field investigations, this study compared SOC stocks and their vertical distributions among three types of ecosystems. The results indicate that grassland had the largest SOC stock, which was 1.5-and 1.8-folds more than stocks in forest and cropland, respectively. Relative to the stock in 0–100 cm depth, grassland held more than 40% of its SOC stock in the upper 20 cm soil layer; forest and cropland both held over 30% of their respective SOC stocks in the upper 20 cm soil layer. SOC stocks in grazed grasslands were remarkably promoted after ≥20 years of grazing exclusion. Conservational cultivation substantially increased the SOC stocks in cropland, especially in the 0–40 cm depth. Stand ages, tree species, and forest types did not have obvious impacts on forest SOC stocks in the study area likely due to the younger stand ages. | 2 | Expression of aquaporin-1 in SMMC-7221 liver carcinoma cells promotes cell migration显示文摘Migration of tumor cells is a crucial step in tumor invasion and metastasis. Here we provide evidence that aquaporin expression is involved in tumor cell migration. RT-PCR, immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis demonstrated the AQP1 protein expression on the plasma membrane of SMMC-7221 human hepatoma cells. SMMC-7221 cell clones with high (SMMC-7221hPf) and low (SMMC-7221lPf) water permeability were identified by functional assays with corresponding high and low AQP1 expression. Cell migration rate was remarka- bly higher in SMMC-7221hPf cells than SMMC-7221l Pf cells, assessed by Boyden chamber and wound healing assays, whereas cell growth and adhesion were not different. Adenovirus-mediated AQP1 ex- pression in SMMC-7221lPf cells increased their water permeability and migration rate. | 7 | A mechanism for the origin and development of the large-scale dunefield on the right flank of the lower reach of Laoha River,Northeast China显示文摘By viewing satellite imagery, a striking large-scale dunefield can be clearly perceived, with a size of nearly 63 km long and 11 km wide, and trending NE–SW, on the right flank of the lower Laoha River, Northeast China. By means of remote sensing imagery analysis and field observation as well as a comparison with a small-scale dunefield on the right flank of the lower Xiangshui River, analogous to the case of the lower Laoha River, this paper presents a new mechanism for its origin and development. The results show that:(1) the large-scale dunefield bears a tile-style framework overwhelmingly composed of transverse barchanoid ridges perpendicular to the predominant winds, and inlaid diverse blowouts.(2) The small-scale dunefield, referred to as a primary structural unit of the large one, is typical of an incipient dunefield, following the same rules of evolution as the larger.(3) A succession of barchanoid ridge chains can steadily migrate downwind in much the same manner as surface wave propagation in air or water stimulated by an incised valley, and ultimately tend to bear roughly the same wavelength and amplitude under stable climate and hydrologic regimes.(4) The first ridge chain acquires its sand source substantially from the downwind escarpments exposing the loose Quaternary sandy sediments to the air, while the ensuing ridges derive their sands dominantly from in situ deflation of the underlain Quaternary loose sandy sediments in blowouts, partly from the upwind ridges through northern elongated horns. Theoretically, the sands from riparian escarpments can be transported by wind to the downwind distal end of a dunefield after sufficient long duration.(5) The lower Laohahe region experienced probably three significant climatic changes in the past, corresponding to the three active dune belts, suggesting that once a large-scale dunefield occurs, it is nearly impossible to be completely stabilized, at least in its central portions. | 9 | AtMAC stabilizes the phragmoplast by crosslinking microtubules and actin filaments during cytokinesis显示文摘The phragmoplast,a structure crucial for the completion of cytokinesis in plant cells,is composed of antiparallel microtubules(MTs)and actin filaments(AFs).However,how the parallel structure of phragmoplast MTs and AFs is maintained,especially during centrifugal phragmoplast expansion,remains elusive.Here,we analyzed a new Arabidopsis thaliana MT and AF crosslinking protein(AtMAC).When AtMAC was deleted,the phragmoplast showed disintegrity during centrifugal expansion,and the resulting phragmoplast fragmentation led to incomplete cell plates.Overexpression of AtMAC increased the resistance of phragmoplasts to depolymerization and caused the formation of additional phragmoplasts during cytokinesis.Biochemical experiments showed that AtMAC crosslinked MTs and AFs in vitro,and the truncated AtMAC protein,N-CC1,was the key domain controlling the ability of AtMAC.Further analysis showed that N-CC1(51–154)is the key domain for binding MTs,and N-CC1(51–125)for binding AFs.In conclusion,AtMAC is the novel MT and AF crosslinking protein found to be involved in regulation of phragmoplast organization during centrifugal phragmoplast expansion,which is required for complete cytokinesis. | Pingzhou Du Yu Liu Lu Deng Dong Qian Xiuhua Xue Ting Yang Tonghui Li Yun Xiang Haiyun Ren | 2023 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2023,65,8: | 0 |

| 11 | How could N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists lead to excitation instead of inhibition?显示文摘N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors(NMDARs) are a family of ionotropic glutamate receptors mainly known to mediate excitatory synaptic transmission and plasticity. Interestingly, low-dose NMDAR antagonists lead to increased, instead of decreased, functional connectivity;and they could cause schizophrenia-and/or antidepressant-like behavior in both humans and rodents. In addition, human genetic evidences indicate that NMDAR loss of function mutations underlie certain forms of epilepsy, a disease featured with abnormal brain hyperactivity. Together, they all suggest that under certain conditions,NMDAR activation actually lead to inhibition, but not excitation,of the global neuronal network. Apparently, these phenomena are rather counterintuitive to the receptor's basic role in mediating excitatory synaptic transmission. How could it happen? Recently, this has become a crucial question in order to fully understand the complexity of NMDAR function, particularly in disease. Over the past decades, different theories have been proposed to address this question. | 12 | Theoretical analysis of the elastic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in explosive weldings显示文摘By considering the joint effects of the Kelvin-Helmholtz(KH) and Rayleigh-Taylor(RT) instabilities, this paper presents an interpretation of the wavy patterns that occur in explosive welding. It is assumed that the elasticity of the material at the interface effectively determines the wavelength, because explosive welding is basically a solid-state welding process. To this end, an analytical model of elastic hydrodynamic instabilities is proposed, and the most unstable mode is selected in the solid phase. Similar approaches have been widely used to study the interfacial behavior of solid metals in high-energy-density physics. By comparing the experimental and theoretical results, it is concluded that thermal softening,which significantly reduces the shear modulus, is necessary and sufficient for successful welding.
