Potential influence of water level changes on energy flows in a lake food web显示文摘Large seasonal water-level fluctuations may influence isotopic signatures of primary producers and the types and amounts of these potential food sources accessible to aquatic fauna of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. In this study, the isotopic signatures of primary producers and consumers were determined, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis and mixing models were combined to investigate the influence of water levels on the diet and isotopic composition of Poyang Lake fish and invertebrates.Five potential food sources (seston, benthic organic matter, aquatic macrophytes, attached algae, and terrestrial plants),4 species of invertebrates, and 10 species of fish were collected from the lake area during dry and wet seasons between January 2009 and April 2010.The δ 13C values of invertebrates and most fish were within the range of δ 13C values of the potential food sources for both seasons. The δ 13C values of invertebrates and most fish were lower in the dry season than in the wet season, whereas the δ 15N values exhibited different patterns for different species.Mixing models indicated that the most important food sources for common lake fauna were seston in the dry season and aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial plants in the wet season. The fauna were more omnivorous in the wet season than in the dry season. The food web dynamics of Poyang Lake are strongly influenced by changes in the abundance and accessibility of different basal food sources that occur because of seasonal flood pulses. The trophic links within the aquatic communities of Poyang Lake are modified by water-level fluctuations.WANG YuYu YU XiuBo LI WenHua XU Jun CHEN YuWei FAN Na 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,26:11
Effect of Water Level Fluctuations on Wintering Goose Abundance in Poyang Lake Wetlands of China显示文摘The Poyang Lake is a Ramsar site and is the important over-wintering site for migratory waterbirds along the East Asian–Australasian Fly way. Examining the effects of water level fluctuations on waterbird abundance and analyzing the influencing mechanism is critical to waterbird protection in the context of hydrological alteration. In this study, the effect of water level regime on wintering goose abundance was examined and the influencing mechanism was interpreted. Synchronous waterbirds survey data, hydrological data, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer-Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(MODIS-NDVI) data and habitat data derived from Landsat TM/ETM data and HJ/CCD data were combined. The satellite-derived Green Wave Index(GWI) based on MODIS-NDVI dataset was applied to detect changes in goose food resources. It was found that habitat size and vegetation conditions are key factors determining goose abundance. Geese numbers were positively correlated with habitat area, while intermediate range of vegetation productivity might benefit the goose abundance. Water level affects goose abundance by changing available habitat areas and vegetation conditions. We suggested that matching hydrological regime and exposed meadows time to wintering geese dynamics was crucial in the Poyang Lake wetlands. Our study could provide sound scientific information for hydrological management in the context of waterbird conservation.XIA Shaoxia LIU Yu CHEN Bin JIA Yifei ZHANG Huan LIU Guanhua YU Xiubo 2017Chinese Geographical Science2017,27,2:8
A Brief Introduction to Chinese Ecosystem Research Network(CERN)显示文摘1 Introduction An ecosystem is one or many communities with a variety of biotic(living organisms including plants, animals and microbes)and abiotic(things like air, water and mineral soil)components that function in an interrelated fashion(Chapin et al.2012).These biotic and abiotic components linked together through nutrient cycles and energy flows(Chapin et al.2012).Ecosystems provide humanity with a wide range of services, which are vital to sustaining human health and well-being,andLI Shenggong YU Guirui YU Xiubo HE Honglin GUO Xuebing 2015Journal of Resources and Ecology2015,6,3:4
Water regulation: a Sword of Damocles for migratory waterbirds in China?显示文摘Dams and reservoirs, regulating water levels for irrigation, hydropower and flood control, are sometimes considered as artificial managed wetlands.Recent research has shown that increased water surface of reservoirs have become habitats for some species of migratory waterbird. However, hydraulic engineering can be a Sword of Damocles for birds.Regulating water levels may dramatically alter a wetlandYifei Jia Guangchun Lei Xiubo Yu 2017Science China(Life Sciences)2017,60,5:2
Building African Ecosystem Research Network for Sustaining Local Ecosystem Goods and Services显示文摘A new form of producing and sharing knowledge has emerged as an international(United States of America,Asia, and Europe) research collaboration, known as the Long-Term Ecological Research(LTER) Network.Although Africa boasts rich biodiversity, including endemic species,it lacks the long-term initiatives to underpin sustainable biodiversity managements. At present, climate change may exacerbate hunger and poverty concerns in addition to resulting in ecosystem degradation, land use change, and other threats in Africa. Therefore, ecosystem monitoring was suggested to understanding the effects of climate change and setting strategies to mitigate these changes. This paper aimed to investigate ecosystem monitoring ground sites and address their coverage gaps in Africa to provide a foundation for optimizing the African Ecosystem Research Network(AERN) ground sites. The geographic coordinates and characteristics of ground sites-based ecosystem monitoring were collected from various networks aligned with the LTER implementation in Africa.Additionally, climatic data and biodiversity distribution maps were retrieved from various sources. These data were used to assess the size of existing ground sites and the gaps in description, ecosystems and biomes. The results reveal that there were 1089 sites established by various networks.Among these sites,30.5%,27.5%,and 28.8% had no information of area, year of establishment, current status,respectively.However,68.0% of them had an area equal to or greater than 1 km2.Sites were created progressively over the course of the years, with 68.9% being created from 2000 to 2005.To date, only 41.5% of the sites were operational. The sites were scattered across Africa, but they were concentrated in Eastern and Southern Africa. The unbalanced distribution pattern of the sites left Central and Northern Africa hardly covered, and many unique ecosystems in Central Africa were not included. To sustain these sites, the AERN should be based on operational sites, seeking secure funding by establishing multiple partnerships.Armand Sedami Igor YEVIDE WU Bingfang YU Xiubo LI Xiaosong LIU Yu LIU Jian 2015Chinese Geographical Science2015,25,4:1

Examining Health of Wetlands with Multiple Ecosystem Services as Targets in China’s Coastal Regions显示文摘Coastal zones are key interconnectors of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.Due to the degradation and fragmentation of coastal wetlands, there is an urgent need to develop assessment methodology to compare the health of wetland ecosystems at different spatial scales. This will help efficiently develop and implement protections using easy-to-access ecosystem health data. This study aims to understand the spatial distribution of coastal and inland wetland health for China’s coastal regions.A Wetland Health Index(WHI)was developed to provide a basis for policy and decision making.Four utilization models—Long Term Model,Open Model,Nature Reserve Model, and Protected and Economic Model—were defined in the context of China’s coastal regions to specifically examine wetland health. Results show that the average WHI score was 63.6 with the range of 44.8–84.3 for 35 National Nature Reserves(NNRs),and the southern NNRs generally performed better than the northern NNRs.The wetlands in the southern provinces/municipalities are relatively healthier than their northern counterparts. The competent authority has slight influence on WHI scores but duration of conservation establishment does not show a clear correlation. With increasing economic activity, the differences in health conditions(WHI scores)of China’s coastal regions also increase.Gross Domestic Product(GDP)or economic intensification does not relate to WHI scores.Appropriate trade-offs between wetland management and economic development could contribute to improve health conditions, conservation and utilization of coastal and inland wetlands.ZHOU Yangming DOU Yuehan YU Xiubo ZHANG Li HUANG Chong WANG Yuyu LI Xiaowei LI He JIA Yifei BAKKER Martha CARSJENS Gerrit Jan ZHOU Yan DUAN Houlang 2020Chinese Geographical Science2020,30,4:1
Boosted lithium storage performance by local build-in electric field derived by oxygen vacancies in 3D holey N-doped carbon structure decorated with molybdenum dioxide显示文摘Three-dimensional holey nitrogen-doped carbon matrixes decorated with molybdenum dioxide(MoO_(2))nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized via a NaCl-assisted template strategy. The obtained MoO_(2)/C composites offered multi-advantages,including higher specific surface area, more active sites, more ions/electrons transmission channels, and shorter transmission path due to the synergistic effect of the uniformly distributed MoO_(2) nanoparticles and porous carbon structure.Especially, the oxygen vacancies were introduced into the prepared composites and enhanced the Li^(+)intercalation/deintercalation process during electrochemical cycling by the Coulomb force. The existence of the local built-in electric field was proved by experimental data, differential charge density distribution, and density of states calculation. The uniquely designed structure and introduced oxygen vacancy defects endowed the MoO_(2)/C composites with excellent electrochemical properties. In view of the synergistic effect of the uniquely designed morphology and introduced oxygen vacancy defects, the MoO_(2)/C composites exhibited superior electrochemical performance of a high capacity of 918.2 mAh g^(-1) at 0.1 A g^(-1) after 130 cycles,562.1 mAh g^(-1) at 1.0 A g^(-1) after 1000 cycles, and a capacity of 181.25 mAh g^(-1) even at 20.0 A g^(-1).This strategy highlights the path to promote the commercial application of MoO_(2)-based and other transition metal oxide electrodes for energy storage devices.Chuanxin Hou Wenyue Yang Hideo Kimura Xiubo Xie Xiaoyu Zhang Xueqin Sun Zhipeng Yu Xiaoyang Yang Yuping Zhang Bin Wang Ben Bin Xu Deepak Sridhar Hassan Algadi Zhanhu Guo Wei Du 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,11:0
Optimizing impedance matching by a dual-carbon Co-regulation strategy of Co_(3)O_(4)@rGO/celery stalks derived carbon composites for excellent microwave absorption显示文摘Both macroscopic composition and microstructure should be considered for reasonable microwave ab-sorbent designing. In this study,Co_(3)O_(4)@reduced graphene oxide(rGO)/Celery stalks derived carbon(CDC)was prepared by loading Co_(3)O_(4) particles into rGO and biomass-derived carbon mixture through oxidation precipitation.By changing the mass ratio of rGO to CDC,the dielectric and impedance matching proper-ties of the composites can be easily regulated. The RL min value of Co_(3)O_(4)@rGO/CDC_(13) composite(weight ratio for rGO:CDC is 1:3)reaches-84.3 dB with a thickness of 4.6 mm,and the widest effective band-width can be obtained at 4.5 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.8 mm.The Co_(3)O_(4)@rGO/CDC_(13) compos-ite with multiple components(Co_(3)O_(4),CDC,rGO)and 3D net structure produces magnetic/dielectric loss combinations, interfacial polarization, and multiple reflections and scattering, and the CDC with half tube and half sheet structure is conducive to the optimization of impedance matching. The strategy of co-regulating dielectric properties of materials with double carbon provides a novel pathway for the prepa-ration of lightweight,low-cost,and high-performance absorbers.Xiubo Xie Yukun Wang Xueqin Sun Heshan Wang Ronghai Yu Wei Du Hongjing Wu 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,2:0

Applied evolutionary biology could aid management of invaded ecosystems显示文摘Invasive plant species subvert essential ecosystem services through a reduction in the abundance and genetic diversity of native plant species.A major challenge now facing land managers and policy makers is how to ensure persistence of native plants while limiting harmful impacts of invasions. Results from recent empirical studies suggest that native plants may evolve adaptations to invasive plants and that adaptive evolution in invasive plants could lessen the negative impacts of invasions. Here,we suggest ways in which knowledge of adaptive evolution in invasive and native plants could be utilized to more effectively manage invaded ecosystems.Ayub M.O.Oduor Xiubo Yu Jian Liu 2015Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2015,1,6:0
Global Dryland Ecosystem Programme(G-DEP):Africa consultative meeting report显示文摘In order to enhance and restore the ecosystems of natural capital in African arid regions, the Global Dryland Ecosystem Programme(G-DEP)consultative meeting was hosted in Dakar,Senegal, from 23 to 25 September 2019.This paper details the first African meeting of the G-DEP.Consultative meeting reviewed preceding dryland ecosystems case studies, identified vulnerable arid and semi-arid regions, and proposed sustainable solutions to problems. It also identified the successes and failures of previous attempts to improve vulnerable ecosystems and ultimately formed an action plan to improve these attempts.Climate, ecosystems, and livelihoods for Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),Great Green Wall Initiative(GGWI)for Sahara and Sahel, and China-Africa cooperation on science, technology, and innovation are three extra main sections concerned of the meeting.Separately, more specific topics as the complicated relationship between these natural processes and human activity, including pastoralism, soil restoration, and vegetation regenerate techniques, were fully discussed.Consultative meeting also identified the positive effects international collaboration can have on dryland regions, specifically in the capacity of sharing information, technology, and innovation on purpose to develop a joint proposal for long-term research programs in African arid and semi-arid areas. Moreover, meetings that review the progress made on ecosystem management for the sustainable livelihoods in Africa, identification of priority areas, and the development and implementation of ecosystem programs for proper research and collaboration in African arid and semi-arid zones, have been proposed as strategic recommendations to enhance the global partnership for sustainable development.Furthermore,as the outcomes of the workshop, there are three steps proposed to handle African dryland climate changes, several aspects suggested to solve current dilemmas of the GGWI,and a series of actions recommended for G-DEP related activities in Africa.PENG Yu FU Bojie ZHANG Linxiu YU Xiubo FU Chao Salif DIOP Hubert HIRWA Aliou GUISSE LI Fadong 2020Journal of Arid Land2020,12,3:0
