| 1 | Surface sulfurization activating hematite nanorods for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting显示文摘Surface treatment is an effective method to improve the photoelectrochemical(PEC) performance of photoelectrodes. Herein, we introduced a novel strategy of surface sulfurization to modify hematite(a-Fe2 O3)nanorods grown in an aqueous solution, which triggered encouraging improvement in PEC performances.In comparison to the solution-grown pristine a-Fe2 O3 nanorod photoanode that is PEC inefficient and always needs high temperature(>600 °C) activation, the surface sulfurized a-Fe2 O3 nanorods show photocurrent density increased by orders of magnitude, reaching 0.46 mA cmà2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE(reversible hydrogen electrode) under simulated solar illumination. This improvement in PEC performances should be attributed to the synergy of the increased carrier density, the reduced surface charge carrier recombination and the accelerated water oxidation kinetics at the a-Fe2 O3/electrolyte interface, as induced by the incorporation of S ions and the formation of multi-state S species(Fe-Sx-Oy) at the surface of a-Fe2 O3 nanorods. | 2 | The Combined Effect of Plastic Particles Size and Concentration on Rotifers’ (Brachionus plicatilis) Performance显示文摘The presence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems is of increasing global concern.Nano-sized plastics,in particular,can penetrate the cell membrane and cause biological death.Our study evaluated the combined impacts of several polystyrene mi-crospheres’sizes and nominal concentrations on the overall performance changes of Brachionus plicatilis.Experimental animals were exposed to three microplastic sizes(0.08,0.5 and 6μm)and five nominal concentrations(0,0.5,2,8,32μg mL−1)for 20 d.Our results showed that the toxicological effect of particle size on rotifers did not significantly depend on the nominal concentration.The interaction between the nominal concentration and size occurred only for body length and lorica width.Specifically,high nominal concentrations of microplastics that were close to nanometer size significantly impaired the overall vitality of rotifers,embodied in shortage of body type,delay in the arrival of maturity,reduction in the cumulative number of neonates,and the advance of the death process.In comparison,fair-sized size(0.5 and 6μm)displayed non-significant damage except for individual groups.Most notably,the net reproductive yield was only a third of what it was in the original environment,implying that there was not much fertility left.Besides,with the development of rotifers,the adverse effects of polystyrene microsphere drive had become more and more serious. | SUI Yanming WANG Senyang MOHSEN Mohamed ZHANG Longsheng SHEN Mengyan LIU Zhiquan NGUYEN Haidang ZHANG Shengmao LI Kaixing LV Linlan DONG Xuexing | 2022 | Journal of Ocean University of China2022,21,2: | 3 |

| 5 | Dietary organic acids ameliorate high stocking density stress-induced intestinal inflammation through the restoration of intestinal microbiota in broilers显示文摘Background:High stocking density(HSD)stress has detrimental effects on growth performance,intestinal barrier function,and intestinal microbiota in intensive animal production.Organic acids(OA)are widely used as feed addi-tives for their ability to improve growth performance and intestinal health in poultry.However,whether dietary OA can ameliorate HSD stress-induced impaired intestinal barrier in broilers remains elusive.In this study,a total of 528 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly allocated into 3 treatments with 12 replicates per treatment including 10 birds for normal stocking density and 17 birds for HSD.The dietary treatments were as follows:1)Normal stocking density+basal diet;2)HSD+basal diets;3)HSD+OA.Results:HSD stress can induce increased levels of serum corticosterone,lipopolysaccharides,interleukin-1β,tumor necrosis factor-α,and down-regulated mRNA expression of ZO-1,resulting in compromised growth performance of broilers(P<0.05).Dietary OA could significantly reduce levels of serum corticosterone,lipopolysaccharides,interleukin-1β,and tumor necrosis factor-α,which were accompanied by up-regulated interleukin-10,mRNA expres-sion of ZO-1,and growth performance(P<0.05).Moreover,OA could down-regulate the mRNA expression of TLR4 and MyD88 to inhibit the NF-κB signaling pathway(P<0.05).Additionally,HSD stress significantly decreased the abundance of Bacteroidetes and disturbed the balance of microbial ecosystems,whereas OA significantly increased the abundance of Bacteroidetes and restored the disordered gut microbiota by reducing competitive and exploita-tive interactions in microbial communities(P<0.05).Meanwhile,OA significantly increased the content of acetic and butyric acids,which showed significant correlations with intestinal inflammation indicators(P<0.05).Conclusions:Dietary OA ameliorated intestinal inflammation and growth performance of broilers through restor-ing the disordered gut microbial compositions and interactions induced by HSD and elevating short-chain fatty acid production to inhibit the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway.These findings demonstrated the critical role of intestinal microbiota in mediating the HSD-induced inflammatory responses,contributing to exploring nutritional strategies to alleviate HSD-induced stress in animals. | Dong Dai Guanghai Qi Jing Wang Haijun Zhang Kai Qiu Yanming Han Yuanyuan Wu Shugeng Wu | 2023 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2023,14,2: | 1 |

| 10 | Differentiated cells derived from fetal neural stem cells improve motor deficits in a rat model of Parkinson's disease显示文摘Objective: Parkinson's disease(PD), which is one of the most common neuro‐degenerative disorders, is characterized by the loss of dopamine(DA) neurons in the substantia nigra in the midbrain. Experimental and clinical studies have shown that fetal neural stem cells(NSCs) have therapeutic effects in neurological disorders. The aim of this study was to examine whether cells that were differentiated from NSCs had therapeutic effects in a rat model of PD. Methods: NSCs were isolated from 14‐week‐old embryos and induced to differentiate into neurons, DA neurons, and glial cells, and these cells were characterized by their expression of the following markers: βⅢ‐tubulin and microtubule‐associated protein 2(neurons), tyrosine hydroxylase(DA neurons), and glial fibrillary acidic protein(glial cells). After a 6‐hydroxydopamine(6‐OHDA)‐lesioned rat model of PD was generated, the differentiated cells were transplanted into the striata of the 6‐OHDA‐lesioned PD rats. Results: The motor behaviors of the PD rats were assessed by the number of apomorphine‐induced rotation turns. The results showed that the NSCs differentiated in vitro into neurons and DA neurons with high efficiencies. After transplantation into the striata of the PD rats, the differentiated cells significantly improved the motor deficits of the transplanted PD rats compared to those of the control nontransplanted PD rats by decreasing the apomorphine‐induced turn cycles as early as 4 weeks after transplantation. Immunofluorescence analyses showed that the differentiated DA neurons survived more than 16 weeks. | 13 | Disclination and molecular director studies on bowlic columnar nematic phase using mosaic-like morphologydecoration method显示文摘Two bowlic cyclotriveratrylene CTV-1 and CTV-2, with different peripheral groups of -OCH3 and -OCH2CH3 for CTV-1 and -OCH3 and -OCH2COOCH3 for CTV-2, respectively, were synthesized by typical trimerization via a multistep sequence from vanillin. Both bowlic CTV molecules were thermotropic liquid crystals, and presented typical grainy textures of the nematic phase and homogeneous texture of the single domain nematic phase. It is of interest to observe the regular and beautiful mosaic-like morphologies after cooling from liquid crystalline phases, which appeared and vanished repeatedly in several circles of cooling and heating. The size of each mosaic was several dozens of micron. In nature, the mosaic-like morphologies are the optical pattern of cracks formed by the shrinking, due to the crystallization of frozen texture of nematic phases. By means of scanning electron microscopy, the mosaic-like morphologies were observed to consist of lamellae, and each mosaic is a rectangular multi-layer lamella, which is composed of packed single-layered lamellae. The fibrils in the diameter of about 1 μm were observed, which are the structural units of lamellae and would be the bundles of the bowlic molecular columns. The mosaic-like morphologies decorate the bowlic molecular columnar nematic phase, therefore, a novel mosaic-like morphologies decoration method was applied to reveal the director distribution of several kinds of point disclinations, such as s = +1(δ =0°and δ =90°) and s = ±1/2, and Nèel domain walls. It was shown that the bowlic molecular columnar nematic phase behaved as normal nematic phases; however, the basic structural units ordered were the bowlic molecular column or the bundles of bowlic molecular column (i.e. fibrils), but not the bowlic molecules themselves. The bowlic molecular columns acted as the rod-like molecules in a normal nematic phase.
