Upper mantle anisotropy of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis and surrounding regions from shear wave splitting analysis显示文摘Polarization analysis of teleseismic data has been used to determine the XKS(SKS,SKKS,and PKS)fast polarization directions and delay times between fast and slow shear waves for 59 seismic stations of both temporary and permanent broadband seismograph networks deployed in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis(EHS)and surrounding regions. The analysis employed both the grid searching method of the minimum tangential energy and stacking analysis methods to develop an image of upper mantle anisotropy in the EHS and surrounding regions using the newly obtained shear wave splitting parameters and previously published results. The fast polarization directions are oriented along a NE-SW azimuth in the EHS.However, within the surrounding regions, the fast directions show a clockwise rotation pattern around the EHS from NE-SW,to E-W,to NW-SE,and then to N-S.In the EHS and surrounding regions, the fast directions of seismic anisotropy determined using shear wave splitting analysis correlate with surficial geological features including major sutures and faults and with the surface deformation fields derived from global positioning system(GPS)data. The coincidence between structural features in the crust, surface deformation fields and mantle anisotropy suggests that the deformation in the crust and lithospheric mantle is mechanically coupled. In the EHS,the coherence between the fast directions and the NE direction of the subduction of the Indian Plate beneath the Tibetan Plateau suggests that the lithospheric deformation is caused mainly by subduction. In the regions surrounding the EHS,we speculate that a westward retreat of the Burma slab could contribute to the curved anisotropy pattern. The Tibetan Plateau is acted upon by a NE-trending force due to the subduction of the Indian Plate, and also affected by a westward drag force due to the westward retreat produced by the eastward subduction of the Burma slab. The two forces contribute to a curved lithospheric deformation that results in the alignment of the upper mantle peridotite lattice parallel to the deformation direction, and thus generates a curved pattern of fast directions around the EHS. | CHANG LiJun WANG ChunYong DING ZhiFeng YOU HuiChuan LOU Hai SHAO CuiRu | 2015 | Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,10: | 16
Tectonics and Seismicity of the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon Region显示文摘The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon region is located in the frontal zone of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, where neo-tectonics and seismicity are intensive and closely related to each other. In the region, two sets of fault structures have developed, striking NNE-NE and NWW-NW, respectively. Investigation shows that they differ markedly in terms of scope, property, active times and intensity. The NWW-NW trending faults are large in size, and most are thrust and thrust strike-slip faults, formed in earlier times. The NEE-NE-strike faults are relatively small in size individually, with concentrated distribution, constituting the NNE-trending shear extensional fault zone, which is relatively younger with evident late Quaternary activities. Strong earthquakes occur mainly in the areas or zones of intensive differential movement of the Himalayas, e.g. along the deep and large fault zones around the crustal blocks. Most earthquakes of M≥7.0 are closely related to tectonics, where large-scale Holocene active faults are distributed with complicated fault geometry, or the faults of multiple directions intersect. Among them, earthquakes of M≥7.5 have occurred on the NW and NE-trending faults with a greater strike-slip component in the fault tectonic zones. | Shao Cuiru You Huichuan Cao Zhongquan Wang Chunyong Tang Fangtou Zhang Decheng Lou Hai Xu Guangyin Yang Qiyan Mei Tuo Xie Ping Yu Gang | 2009 | Earthquake Research in China2009,23,2: | 1
Geological Structure and Quaternary Activity of the Zhangjiakou Fault, Northern China显示文摘Based on detailed field investigations, this paper describes the geometrical characteristics and tectonic activities of the Zhangjiakou fault at the northwest of Beijing. This fault strikes mainly northwest to west, short parts of which strike near east to west, dipping north, and extends over a length of 70km. It is a major geological and geomorphological margin, controlling the neotectonic movement in this region. On the south side of the Zhangjiakou fault are the Late Quaternary unconsolidated deposits, forming basins; while on the other side are Mesozoic volcano debris and Pre-Mesozoic metamorphic rocks, forming lower mountains and hills. The Zhangjiakou fault consists mainly of high-angle inverse strike-slip fault and partially of normal strike-slip fault. Among these, the north-dipping NW-NWW-trending secondary faults, constituting the main fracture of the fault, have inverse characteristics; those near the EW-trending secondary faults are links of the former faults, with a smaller length and normal faulting characteristics. Thus, the Zhangjiakou fault is a north-dipping inverse and partially south-dipping normal strike-slip fault. The Zhangjiakou fault has been continuously active since the Quaternary. With the exception of the western end extension, which has been active since the late Pleistocene, the main part of the fault has been active since the Holocene. The central main segment of the Zhangjiakou fault is more active. Since the mid-late period of the late Pleistocene, the average vertical slip rate of a single fault has been over 0. 07mm /a ~ 0. 30mm /a. The Zhangjiakou fault has multi-slip surfaces, and the total vertical slip rate reaches 1. 33mm /a,estimated from the Qingshuihe river terraces and the relevant drilling data. | Zhou Yueling You Huichuan Zhou Jianglin Shao Cuiru Zhang Zhengyu | 2011 | Earthquake Research in China2011,25,1: | 0
Study on the Activity of the Toupo Fault in Southern Anhui Province显示文摘The Toupo Fault, located in southern Anhui Province, strikes N60°~70°E in a linear route that is clear on satellitic image. It plays an important role in controlling the tectonics, geomorphology and distribution of Mesozoic-Cenozoic basins and strata. Detailed field investigation was carried out along the Toupo Fault to study its activity. Profiles, as well as a trench excavated reveal that the Quaternary super stratum above the fault had not been offset. The stratum was sampled and dated with TL methods to be the Mid-Pleistocene time, implying that the fault had been no longer active since then. Three stages can be divided since the fault was formed. The first stage is in the late Yanshan Movement, when the fault movement was of reversal strike-slipping and the tracks formed then are still clear today. The second stage is in the early Himalayan Movement—the late Cretaceous-early Tertiary, when the fault movement turned to be normal faulting and the southern wall became a tensile basin and received clastic sediment. The third stage is since the late Tertiary, when the tectonic movement was very weak. No late Tertiary sediments were formed and the Quaternary sediment was only as thick as ten meters. The geomorphology also suggested an aging form. Neither vertical nor horizontal displacement was evident along the Toupo Fault during this stage, though fault gouge dating suggested that the Toupo Fault might have been active during the Mid-Pleistocene. | Chen Wenbin Li Xiaojun Song Yisheng Pan Hua Huan Wenlin Xu Guangyin Jiang Hui You Huichuan | 2006 | Earthquake Research in China2006,20,1: | 0
Geometric Structure and Tectonic Activities of Wanquan Fault,Hebei Province显示文摘Based on detailed investigations and prospecting, this paper describes the geometrical characteristics and tectonic activities of Wanquan fault in northwest of Beijing. This fault strikes mainly northeast or northeast to north, dipping southeast, and extends over a length of 15km. It is a major geological and geomorphological margin, controlling the neotectonic movement in this region. On the southeast side of Wanquan fault are the Late Quaternary unconsolidated deposits, forming a basin or deposition; but on the other side is Mesozoic volcano debris, forming lower-mountains and hills. Wanquan fault is a mid- to-high-angle normal fault dipping southeast. This fault was more active in the Quaternary. Since the middle-late part of the alate Pleistocene, the average rate with vertical slip of a single fault is over 0. 03 ~ 0. 3mm /a,but the fault has multiple slipping surfaces, and a total rate with vertical slip will be estimated. | Zhou Jianglin You Huichuan Zhou Yueling Shao Cuiru Yang Qiyan Li Jinjin Zhang Zhengyu | 2013 | Earthquake Research in China2013,27,2: | 0
High-Resolution Seismic Reflection Profiling of the Fenhe Fault in Taiyuan City显示文摘In this paper, we demonstrate the high resolution seismic reflection data for a depth range of several hundred meters across the Fenhe fault in Taiyuan city, China. In combination with the relevant borehole logs, these data provide useful constraints on the accurate position, geometry and deformation rate of the fault, as well as the kinematics of recent fault motion. The high resolution seismic reflection profiling revealed that the western branch of the Fenhe fault is a high angle, eastward dipping, oblique normal fault, and cutting up to the lower part of the Quaternary system. It was revealed that the top breaking point of this fault is at a depth of ~70m below the ground surface. A borehole log across the Fenhe fault permitted us to infer that there are two high angle, oppositely dipping, oblique normal faults. The eastem branch lies beneath the eastern embankment of the Fenhe river, dipping to the west and cutting into the Holocene late Pleistocene strata with a maximum vertical offset of ~8m. Another borehole log across the northern segment of the Fenhe fault indicates that the western branch of this fault has cut into the Holocene late Pleistocene strata with a maximum vertical offset of ~6m. The above mentioned data provide a minimum average Pleistocene Holocene vertical slip rate of 0 06~0 08mm/a and a maximum average large earthquake recurrence interval of 5 0~6 7ka for the Fenhe fault. | You Huichuan, He Zhengqin, Ding Zhifeng, Wu Jianping and Wu QingjuInstitute of Geophysics, China Seismological Bureau, Beijing 100081, China | 2003 | Earthquake Research in China2003,17,1: | 0
Application of Ultra-shallow Seismic Survey to the Wanggezhuang Fault in Qingdao显示文摘At present, there is less theoretical research and practical experience in the aspect of ultrashallow seismic exploration to the target layers at depths of only tens of meters both at home and abroad. Seismic exploration plays an important role in the location of faults and active structures, but the depth dozens of meters below the ground surface is the blind area of any kind of deep and shallow seismic exploration. Starting from the point of view of detecting urban active faults, and using related theories and methods of geology, geophysics and mathematics, the paper discusses the preconditions for acquiring efficient ultra-shallow seismic survey results in complicated geological backgrounds in Qingdao.Taking the Qingdao area as an example in this paper,we study the depth condition of Quaternary deposits, and apply 4-8 stacking folds to satisfy the requirement to get the exploration results with high-resolution and high-SNR. Preliminary results reveal that selecting a proper surveillance layout is one of the keys to acquire authentic exploration results in ultra-shallow P-wave reflection exploration. Our results also show that ultrashallow seismic reflection method in detecting faults in the Qingdao area has good application prospects. | Yang Qiyan You Huichuan Di Long | 2018 | Earthquake Research in China2018,32,4: | 0
Effect of Seismicity in the Taiwan Straits on the Southeast Coastal Area of the Chinese Mainland显示文摘Based on the available and supplementary survey data,it analyzes the effect of seismicity in Taiwan and the Taiwan Straits on the southeastern coastal area of the Chinese mainland and discusses its roles in seismic hazard prevention and textual research of historical earthquakes. The results show that the frequency of strong earthquake in Taiwan Region is high, with a time interval ranging from several to dozens of years, but the maximum influence intensity of seismicity from there to the coastal areas of the Chinese mainland is only VI degree; while the maximum influence intensity of the seismicity along the littoral fault zone located on the west of the straits reaches VIII ~ IX degree because of the shorter distance to the Chinese mainland, though the frequency of strong earthquakes is lower than that of the Taiwan Region. Strategies for protecting against seismic hazards in the southeastern coastal area of China are proposed. Besides focusing on the effect of strong earthquakes of the littoral fault zone, attention also has to be paid to the low-cycle fatigue failure of engineering structures induced by the earthquakes in Taiwan and the stir effect on society induced by earthquake phobia. It is concluded that it would be more accurate and proper to take the May 19,1517 earthquake recorded in the Chinese mainland area as the influence of a strong earthquake in the Taiwan Region. | Zhang Zhizhong Pan Hua Yan Jiaquan You Huichuan | 2010 | Earthquake Research in China2010,24,3: | 0
