| 1 | Water regime-nitrogen fertilizer incorporation interaction:Field study on methane and nitrous oxide emissions from a rice agroecosystem in Harbin, China显示文摘Water regime and nitrogen(N) fertilizer are two important factors impacting greenhouse gases(GHG) emission from paddy field, whereas their effects have not been well studied in cold region. In this study, we conducted a two-year field experiment to study the impacts of water regime and N fertilizer on rice yields and GHG emissions in Harbin, China, a cold region located in high latitudes. Our results showed that intermittent irrigation significantly decreased methane(CH_4) emission compared with continuous flooding, however,the decrement was far lower than the global average level. The N_2O emissions were very small when flooded but peaked at the beginning of the disappearance of floodwater. The N fertilizer treatments increased CH_4 emissions at low level(75 kg N/ha). But both CH_4 and N_2O emissions were uninfluenced at the levels of 150 kg N/ha and 225 kg N/ha. Rice yields increased under intermittent irrigation and were highest at the level of 150 kg N/ha. | 4 | The relationship between relative growth rate and whole-plant C:N:P stoichiometry in plant seedlings grown under nutrient-enriched conditions显示文摘Aims Recent theories indicate that N is more in demand for plant growth than P;therefore,N concentration and N:C and N:P ratios are predicted to be positively correlated with relative growth rate(RGR)in plants under nutrient-enriched conditions.This prediction was tested in this study.Methods We examined the whole-plant concentrations of C,N and P and RGR,as well as the relationship between RGR and the concentrations and the ratios of N:C,P:C and N:P,for different harvest stages(the days after seed germination)of the seedlings of seven shrub species and four herbaceous species grown in N and P non-limiting conditions.The relationships among plant size,nutrient concentrations and ratios were subsequently determined.Important Findings RGR was positively correlated with N concentration and the ratios of N:PandN:C when the data were pooled for all species and for each shrub species,but not for individual herbaceous species.However,the relationship between RGR and P concentration and P:C was not significantly correlated for either shrubs or herbs.The variation of N among harvest stages and species was much greater than that of P,and the variation in N:P ratio was determined primarily by changes in N concentration.The shrub species differed from the herbaceous species in their N and P concentrations,nutrient ratios and in intraspecific relationships between RGR and nutrient ratios.These differences possibly reflect differences in the capacity for P storage and biomass allocation patterns.In general,our data support recent theoretical predictions regarding the relationship between RGR and C:N:P stoichiometry,but they also show that species with different life forms differ in the relationships among RGR and C:N:P stoichimetries. | Youhong Peng Karl J.Niklas Shucun Sun | 2011 | Journal of Plant Ecology2011,4,3: | 5 |

| 6 | Transcriptome profiling reveals regulatory mechanisms underlying corolla senescence in petunia显示文摘The genetic regulatory mechanisms that govern natural corolla senescence in petunia are not well understood.To identify key genes and pathways that regulate the process,we performed a transcriptome analysis in petunia corolla at four developmental stages,including corolla fully opening without anther dehiscence(D0),corolla expansion,2 days after anthesis(D2),corolla with initial signs of senescence(D4),and wilting corolla(D7).We identified large numbers of differentially expressed genes(DEGs),ranging from 4626 between the transition from D0 and D2,1116 between D2 and D4,a transition to the onset of flower senescence,and 327 between D4 and D7,a developmental stage representing flower senescence.KEGG analysis showed that the auxin-and ethylene-related hormone biosynthesis and signaling transduction pathways were significantly activated during the flower development and highly upregulated at onset of flower senescence.Ethylene emission was detected at the D2 to D4 transition,followed by a large eruption at the D4 to D7 transition.Furthermore,large numbers of transcription factors(TFs)were activated over the course of senescence.Functional analysis by virus-induced gene silencing(VIGS)experiments demonstrated that inhibition of the expression of TFs,such as ethylene-related ERF,auxin-related ARF,bHLH,HB,and MADS-box,significantly extended or shortened flower longevity.Our data suggest that hormonal interaction between auxin and ethylene may play critical regulatory roles in the onset of natural corolla senescence in petunia. | Hong Wang XiaoXiao Chang Jing Lin Youhong Chang Jen-Chih Chen Michael S.Reid Cai-Zhong Jiang | 2018 | Horticulture Research2018,5,1: | 4 |
| 7 | Engineering Hydrogels for Efficient Solar Desalination and Water Purification显示文摘CONSPECTUS:Safe and adequate water is a global challenge due to the growing population and pollution in the wake of natural disasters.Access to clean water is a cornerstone for the further development of our modern society.Solar-powered desalination and water purification have attracted much research attention due to the high solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency and ease of implementation in multiple scales,from compact,stand-alone devices for individual households to large,centralized dimensions for communities.Nevertheless,the generation of water vapor at low temperatures below the boiling point is usually a slow process under natural sunlight.The production rate of clean water relies on the efficiencies of solar energy conversion and utilization,which can be enhanced in two directions:systems optimization and materials innovation.Starting from bottom heating and volumetric heating,interfacial evaporation has been adopted recently to systematically reduce energy loss by localizing heat near the evaporation surface using photothermal materials.Meanwhile,carbonaceous materials,narrow bandgap semiconductors,and polymers with different structures were designed to achieve thermal management and water transport.In this Account,we highlight the recent progress of hydrogels as a highly tunable material platform for solar-powered desalination and water purification.We begin by introducing how gelation chemistry endows hydrogels with desirable properties and multiscale tunability from molecular to macroscopic levels.Then,we review three major strategies to promote efficient solar-to-vapor conversion in terms of reducing water evaporation enthalpy,optimizing heat distribution,and tailoring the evaporation surface.First,by selecting polymeric backbones with hydratable functional groups,the water state in hydrogels can be regulated to facilitate intermediate water,which has a lower evaporation enthalpy compared to that of the bulk water.This polymer−water interaction can be further tuned during synthesis and post-treatment.Second,light-absorbing additives within hydrogels should not only convert solar energy to heat effectively but also confine the heat near the evaporative surfaces.Third,since water molecules are encapsulated in the polymer network of hydrogels,the surface of the hydrogel becomes the evaporation front of liquid water.Hence,tailoring the surface topography and wettability of hydrogels has important effects on the evaporation rate.Next,we discuss key functions that endow hydrogel evaporators with excellent desalination and purification performances,including anti-salt-fouling property for stable and long-term desalination,as well as easy integration of functional materials to remove other contaminants,such as heavy metal ions and organic dyes,for greater distillate quality.Last,existing challenges and future opportunities in both fundamental studies and practical implementation of the hydrogel-based solar water purification systems are discussed. | Youhong Guo Guihua Yu | 2021 | Accounts of Materials Research2021,2,5: | 4 |
| 8 | Preparation of Silver Nanowires via a Rapid,Scalable and Green Pathway显示文摘Rapid synthesis of silver nanowires(Ag NWs) with high quality and a broad processing window is challenging because of the low selectivity of the formation of multiply twinned particles at the nucleation stage for subsequent Ag NWs growth.Herein we report a systematic study of the water-involved heterogeneous nucleation of Ag NWs with high rate(less than 20 min) in a simple and scalable preparation method.Using glycerol as a reducing agent and a solvent with a high boiling point,the reaction is rapidly heated to 210 ℃ in air to synthesize Ag NWs with a very high yield in gram level.It is noted that the addition of a small dose of water plays a key role for obtaining highly pure Ag NWs in high yield,and the optimal water/glycerol ratio is0.25%.After investigating a series of forming factors including reaction temperature and dose of catalysts,the formation kinetics and mechanism of the Ag NWs are proposed.Compared to other preparation methods,our strategy is simple and reproducible.These Ag NWs show a strong Raman enhancement effect for organic molecules on their surface. | Cheng Yang Youhong Tang Zijin Su Zhexu Zhang Cheng Fang | 2015 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2015,31,1: | 3 |

| 13 | c-Fos expression within the L_5 spinal cord dorsal horn after spinal nerve ligation in rats Is intraplantar administration of glutamate different from intrathecal administration?显示文摘BACKGROUND:Injection of glutamate (Glu) in normal animals can cause neuronal c-Fos expression; however,whether Glu can induce spinal neuronal c-Fos expression in pain models is unclear. OBJECTIVE:To examine the effects of intraplantar and intrathecal injection of Glu on c-Fos expression in the L5 spinal cord dorsal horn Ⅰ/Ⅱand Ⅲ/Ⅳ layers after spinal nerve ligation,and to study the effects of the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonist,D-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoate (D-AP5),and a selective group I mGluR antagonist,7-hydroyiminocyclo propan[a]chromen-1a-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (cpccoEt). DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:A randomized,controlled animal study was performed at the Department of Pharmacology,Oral Anatomy,and Neurobiology,Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry,from December 2005 to December 2006. MATERIALS:Glu (5 μmol),D-AP5 (50 nmol) and cpccoEt (250 nmol) were provided by Wako Pure Chemical Industries,Osaka,Japan,and diluted in saline (50 μL). The pH of all solutions was adjusted to 7.4. METHODS:Twelve rats were randomly divided into sham operation (n = 6) and spinal nerve ligation (SNL; n = 6) groups for behavioral assessments of neuropathic pain after ligation surgery of the left L5-6 nerve segment. Another 60 rats were randomly divided into sham operation,SNL,saline-intraplantar,saline-intrathecal,Glu-intraplantar,Glu-intrathecal,D-AP5-intrathecal,Glu-D-AP5-intrathecal,cpccoEt-intrathecal,and Glu-cpccoEt-intrathecal groups,with 6 rats in each group. All groups except sham operation group received a similar SNL. On day 14,rats received a 50-μL injection of saline,Glu,D-AP5,and/or cpccoEt into the left intraplantar or intrathecal L5-6 segments. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:The number of c-Fos positive neurons in both Ⅰ/Ⅱ and Ⅲ/Ⅳ spinal layers at L6 was observed using immunohistochemistry 2 hours after administration. RESULTS:(1) SNL increased the level of c-Fos expression in two sides of the spinal cord,particularly on Ⅲ/Ⅳ spinal layers of the ligated side. (2) Intraplantar or intrathecal administration of saline significantly increased the c-Fos labeled neurons in Ⅰ/Ⅱ spinal layers of the ligated side,compared with SNL alone (P < 0.01). (3) Intraplantar Glu (5 μmol) increased the number of c-Fos positive neurons in Ⅰ/Ⅱ spinal layers compared with intraplantar saline (P < 0.01). (4) The number of c-Fos neurons in Ⅰ/Ⅱspinal layers on both the ipsilateral and contralateral side after intraplantar Glu was lower than intrathecal Glu (P < 0.01),with a 3-fold higher induction by intrathecal Glu. (5) Co-administration of D-AP5 or cpccoEt reduced the effects of intrathecal Glu (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION:Intrathecal Glu increases c-Fos expression more than intraplantar Glu. | 18 | Multiplexed imaging detection of live cell intracellular changes in early apoptosis with aggregation-induced emission fluorogens显示文摘Apoptosis is an important process for maintaining tissue homeostasis and eliminating abnormal cells in multicellular organisms.Abnormality in apoptosis often leads to severe diseases such as cancers. Better understanding of its mechanisms and processes is therefore important. Accompanying molecular biology events of apoptosis is a series of cellular morphology changes: nucleus condensation, cell shrinkage and rounding, cell surface blebbing, dynamic blebbing, apoptotic membrane protrusions and nucleus fragmentations and finally, the formation and release of apoptotic bodies. It is difficult to detect cellular changes in the early phase of apoptosis due to the subtle changes at this phase. In the current study, we induced apoptosis in He La cells with H2 O2 and used nuclear dye Hoechst 33258, mitochondria, lysosome and cytoplasmic protein specific aggregation-induced emission fluorogens(AIEgens), TPE-Ph-In, 2 M-DABS and BSPOTPE to successfully perform live cell multiplexed imaging to investigate early apoptosis cellular events. We showed the gradual dissipation of mitochondria membrane potential until it is nondetectable by TPE-Ph-In.
