| 1 | Towards an Artificial Intelligence Framework for Data-Driven Prediction of Coronavirus Clinical Severity显示文摘The virus SARS-CoV2,which causes the Coronavirus disease COVID-19 has become a pandemic and has spread to every inhabited continent.Given the increasing caseload,there is an urgent need to augment clinical skills in order to identify from among the many mild cases the few that will progress to critical illness.We present a first step towards building an artificial intelligence(AI)framework,with predictive analytics(PA)capabilities applied to real patient data,to provide rapid clinical decision-making support.COVID-19 has presented a pressing need as a)clinicians are still developing clinical acumen given the disease’s novelty,and b)resource limitations in a rapidly expanding pandemic require difficult decisions relating to resource allocation.The objectives of this research are:(1)to algorithmically identify the combinations of clinical characteristics of COVID-19 that predict outcomes,and(2)to develop a tool with AI capabilities that will predict patients at risk for more severe illness on initial presentation.The predictive models learn from historical data to help predict specifically who will develop acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS),a severe outcome in COVID-19.Our experimental results based on two hospitals in Wenzhou,Zhejang,China identify features most predictive of ARDS in COVID-19 initial presentation which would not have stood out to clinicians.A mild increase in elevated alanine aminotransferase(ALT)(a liver enzyme)),a presence of myalgias(body aches),and an increase in hemoglobin,in this order,are the clinical features,on presentation,that are the most predictive.Those two centers’COVID-19 case series symptoms on initial presentation can help predict severe outcomes.Predictive models that learned from historical data of patients from two Chinese hospitals achieved 70%to 80%accuracy in predicting severe cases. | Xiangao Jiang Megan Coffee Anasse Bari Junzhang Wang Xinyue Jiang Jianping Huang Jichan Shi Jianyi Dai Jing Cai Tianxiao Zhang Zhengxing Wu Guiqing He Yitong Huang | 2020 | Computers, Materials & Continua2020,,4: | 15 |
| 2 | Dendrite‐free lithium and sodium metal anodes with deep plating/stripping properties for lithium and sodium batteries显示文摘Although lithium(Li)and sodium(Na)metals can be selected as the promising anode materials for next‐generation rechargeable batteries of high energy density,their practical applications are greatly restricted by the uncontrollable dendrite growth.Herein,a platinum(Pt)–copper(Cu)alloycoated Cu foam(Pt–Cu foam)is prepared and then used as the substrate for Li and Na metal anodes.Owing to the ultrarough morphology with a threedimensional porous structure and the quite large surface area as well as lithiophilicity and sodiophilicity,both Li and Na dendrite growths are significantly suppressed on the substrate.Moreover,during Li plating,the lithiated Pt atoms can dissolve into Li phase,leaving a lot of microsized holes on the substrate.During Na plating,although the sodiated Pt atoms cannot dissolve into Na phase,the sodiation of Pt atoms elevates many microsized blocks above the current collector.Either the holes or the voids on the surface of Pt–Cu foam what can be extra place for deposited alkali metal,what effectively relaxes the internal stress caused by the volume exchange during Li and Na plating/stripping.Therefore,the symmetric batteries of Li@Pt–Cu foam and Na@Pt–Cu foam have both achieved long‐term cycling stability even at ultrahigh areal capacity at 20 mAh cm−2. | Jianyi Wang Qi Kang Jingchao Yuan Qianru Fu Chunhua Chen Zibo Zhai Yang Liu Wei Yan Aijun Li Jiujun Zhang | 2021 | Carbon Energy2021,3,1: | 6 |

| 5 | Effect of Microwave Heating on Infrared Radiation Properties of Cordierite-Ferrites Based Composite Ceramics显示文摘The cordierite-ferrites based infrared radiation composite materials were synthesized with Fe2O3, Mn O2, Cu O, Co2O3, and Mg2Al4Si5O18 powders as raw materials via microwave heating. The cordierite-ferrites based composite ceramics could be obtained via microwave heating at 1173 K for 1 h or 1473 K for 10 min, respectively. The lower synthesis temperature or the shorter heating time results in the smaller grain size of the composite ceramics obtained by microwave heating. The interplanar distance of cordierite becomes greater after microwave heating, indicating that the doping effect of transitional metal oxides on the cordierite is more efficient in microwave heating. | 6 | Estimating the macrobenthic species richness with an optimized sampling design in the intertidal zone of Changjiang Estuary显示文摘It is a challenge in the field sampling to face conflict between the statistical requirements and the logistical constraints when explicitly estimating the macrobenthos species richness in the heterogeneous intertidal wetlands. To solve this problem, this study tried to design an optimal, efficient and practical sampling strategy by comprehensively focusing on the three main parts of the entire process(to optimize the sampling method, to determine the minimum sampling effort and to explore the proper sampling interval) in a typical intertidal wetland of the Changjiang(Yangtze) Estuary, China. Transect sampling was selected and optimized by stratification based on pronounced habitat types(tidal flat, tidal creek, salt marsh vegetation). This type of sampling is also termed within-transect stratification sampling. The optimal sampling intervals and the minimum sample effort were determined by two beneficial numerical methods: Monte Carlo simulations and accumulative species curves. The results show that the within-transect stratification sampling with typical habitat types was effective for encompassing 81% of the species, suggesting that this type of sampling design can largely reduce the sampling effort and labor. The optimal sampling intervals and minimum sampling efforts for three habitats were determined: sampling effort must exceed 1.8 m^2 by 10 m intervals in the salt marsh vegetation, 2 m^2 by 10 m intervals in the tidal flat, and 3 m^2 by 1 m intervals in the tidal creek habitat. It was suggested that the differences were influenced by the mobility range of the dominant species and the habitats' physical differences(e.g., tidal water, substrate, vegetation cover). The optimized sampling strategy could provide good precision in the richness estimation of macrobenthos and balance the sampling effort. Moreover, the conclusions presented here provide a reference for recommendations to consider before macrobenthic surveys take place in estuarine wetlands. | 8 | Study on Growth,Serum Biochemical and Antioxidant Enzyme Indices of Juvenile Siganus guttatus Fed with Enteromorpha prolifra and Artificial Feed显示文摘In order to provide reference for using Siganus guttatus to control overgrowth of Enteromorpha prolifra,the growth,serum biochemical and antioxidant enzyme indices of juvenile S.guttatus respectively fed with E.prolifra and artificial feed were studied.One hundred and eighty individuals were cultivated for 90 days in six 2.5 m × 1.5 m × 1.5 m cages (30 ind.per cage) which mesh size were 0.5 mm.The experimental animals were divided into two dietary groups (three cages for each group) that were fed with E.prolifra and artificial feed respectively.During the culture period,temperatures ranged from 23.0 to 26.5℃,p H was between 7.8 and 8.2,dissolved oxygen was more than 5.0 mg/L.The weight gain rate,specific growth rate,relative growth rate,hepato-somatic index of juvenile S.guttatus fed with E.prolifra were significantly lowe than that fed with artificial feed (P<0.05).The total protein (TP),urea nitrogen (UN)and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) of juvenile S.guttatus fed with E.Prolifra were significantly higher than that fed with artificial feed (P<0.05),while glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (AST/GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (ALT/GPT) of juvenile S.guttatus fed with E.prolifra were significantly lower than that fed with artificial feed (P<0.05).SOD,GPX and anti-superoxide anion radical activity in liver,kidney,gill and muscle of juvenile S.guttatus fed with E.prolifra were higher than that fed with artificial feed,and these antioxidant enzyme activities in kidney of juvenile S.guttatus fed with E.prolifra was significantly higher than that fed with artificial feed (P<0.05),while CAT and hydroxyl radical-inhibiting activity in liver of juvenile S.guttatus fed with artificial feed were significantly higher than that fed with E.prolifra (P<0.05).Juvenile S.guttatus fed with E.prolifra showed poor growth performance but better antioxidant defense system.S.guttatus is easily raised and has stronger ability of digestion and absorption of E.Prolifra.The technique that uses S.guttatus to control E.prolifra deserves deeply study. | Song Chao Hu Chengshuo Zhang Longzhen Zhao Feng Huang Xiaorong Wang Yu Liu Jianyi | 2016 | Animal Husbandry and Feed Science2016,8,5: | 2 |

| 10 | Measuring Social Vulnerability to Natural Hazards in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region,China显示文摘Social vulnerability in this study represents the differences between the capacity to cope with natural hazards and disaster losses suffered within and between places.The assessment of social vulnerability has been recognized as a critical step in understanding natural hazard risks and enhancing effective response capabilities.This article presents an initial study of the social vulnerability of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(B-T-H) Region in China.The goal is to replicate and test the applicability of the United States Social Vulnerability Index(So VI) method in a Chinese cultural context.Thirty-nine variables adapted from the So VI were collected in relation to two aspects:socioeconomic vulnerability and built environment vulnerability.Using factor analysis,seven factors were extracted from the variable set:the structure of social development,the level of economic and government financial strength,social justice and poverty,family structure,the intensity of space development,the status of residential housing and transportation,and building structure.Factor scores were summed to get the final So VI scores and the most and least vulnerable units were identified and mapped.The highest social vulnerability is concentrated in the northwest of the study area.The least socially vulnerable areas are mainly distributed in the Beijing,Tianjin and Shijiazhuang core urban peripheral and central city areas of the prefecture-level cities.The results show that this method is a useful tool for revealing places that have a high level of vulnerability,in other words,areas which are more likely to face significant challenges in coping with a large-scale event.These findings could provide a scientific basis for policy making and the implementation of disaster prevention and mitigation in China. | HUANG Jianyi SU Fei ZHANG Pingyu | 2015 | Chinese Geographical Science2015,25,4: | 2 |

| 13 | WIPER: Weighted in-Path Edge Ranking for biomolecular association networks显示文摘Background:In network biology researchers generate biomolecular networks with candidate genes or proteins experimentally-derived from high-throughput data and known biomolecular associations.Current bioinformatics research focuses on characterizing candidate genes/proteins,or nodes,with network characteristics,e.g.,betweenness centrality.However,there have been few research reports to characterize and prioritize biomolecular associations('edges'),which can represent gene regulatory events essential to biological processes.Method:We developed Weighted In-Path Edge Ranking(WIPER),a new computational algorithm which can help evaluate all biomolecular interactions/associations('edges')in a network model and generate a rank order of every edge based on their in-path traversal scores and statistical significance test result.To validate whether WIPER worked as we designed,we tested the algorithm on synthetic network models.Results:Our results showed WIPER can reliably discover both critical'well traversed in-path edges',which are statistically more traversed than normal edges,and'peripheral in-path edges',which are less traversed than normal edges.Compared with other simple measures such as betweenness centrality,WIPER provides better biological interpretations.In the case study of analyzing postanal pig hearts gene expression,WIPER highlighted new signaling pathways suggestive of cardiomyocyte regeneration and proliferation.In the case study of Alzheimer's disease genetic disorder association,WIPER reports SRC:APP,AR:APP,APP:FYN,and APP:NES edges(gene-gene associations)both statistically and biologically important from PubMed co-citation.Conclusion:We believe that WIPER will become an essential software tool to help biologists discover and validate essential signaling/regulatory events from high-throughput biology data in the context of biological networks.Availability:The free WIPER API is described at the website(discovery.informatics.uab.edu/wiper/). | Zongliang Yue Thanh Nguyen Eric Zhang Jianyi Zhang Jake Y.Chen | 2019 | Quantitative Biology2019,7,4: | 1 |
