1Risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia in trauma patients:A descriptive analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND:We sought to evaluate the risk factors for developing ventilator-associated pneumonia(VAP)and whether the location of intubation posed a risk in trauma patients.METHODS:Data were retrospectively reviewed for adult trauma patients requiring intubation for>48 hours,admitted between 2010 and 2013.Patients’demographics,clinical presentations and outcomes were compared according to intubation location(prehospital intubation[PHI]vs.trauma room[TRI])and presence vs.absence of VAP.Multivariate regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of VAP.RESULTS:Of 471 intubated patients,332 patients met the inclusion criteria(124 had PHI and208 had TRI)with a mean age of 30.7±14.8 years.PHI group had lower GCS(P=0.001),respiratory rate(P=0.001),and higher frequency of head(P=0.02)and chest injuries(P=0.04).The rate of VAP in PHI group was comparable to the TRI group(P=0.60).Patients who developed VAP were 6 years older,had significantly lower GCS and higher ISS,head AIS,and higher rates of polytrauma.The overall mortality was 7.5%,and was not associated with intubation location or pneumonia rates.In the early-VAP group,gram-positive pathogens were more common,while gram-negative microorganisms were more frequently encountered in the late VAP group.Logistic regression analysis and modeling showed that the impact of the location of intubation in predicting the risk of VAP appeared only when chest injury was included in the models.CONCLUSION:In trauma,the risk of developing VAP is multifactorial.However,the location of intubation and presence of chest injury could play an important role.Suresh Kumar Arumugam Insolvisagan Mudali Gustav Strandvik Ayman El-Menyar Ammar Al-Hassani Hassan Al-Thani1 2018World Journal of Emergency Medicine2018,9,3:17
2In vitro antioxidant activities of ethanol extract from Enhalus acoroides (L.F.) Royle显示文摘Objective:To search for new sources of safe and inexpensive antioxidants,the leaf,root and rhizome of Enhalus acoroides(E.acoroides) were screened for the first time for their antioxidant activities.Methods:Samples of leaf,root and rhizome from E.acoroides were tested for total phenolic content,proanthocyanidins and in vitro antioxidant activity in terms of total antioxidant assay,DPPH assay and FRAP assay.Results:The leaf sample was found to have high levels of phenolic(0.323±0.028 mg TAE/g) and proanthocyanidins(0.570 0±0.000 3 mg TAE/g) when compared to root and rhizome.The leaf samples exhibited higher total antioxidant activity (11.770±0.026 mg Ascorbic acid equivalent/g),higher percentage of DPPH radical scavenging activity(25.76±0.04) and higher reducing power(18.060±0.073) in terms of mg GAE/g.In addition, there was a significant correlation between total phenolic content and total antioxidant activity (R^2=0.923),DPPH assay(R^2=0.509).FRAP assay(R^2=0.994).Similarly,significant correlation was found between the proanthocyanidin and total antioxidant activity(R^2=0.977),DPPH assay (R^2=0.464) and the FRAP assay(R^2=0.998).Conclusions:These results suggested that E.acoroides have strong antioxidant potential.Further study is necessary for isolation and characterization of the active antioxidant agents,which can be used to treat various oxidative stress-related diseases.Rengasamy Ragupathi Raja Kannan Rajasekaran Arumugam Perumal Anantharaman 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,11:15
3In vitro antioxidant,anti-diabetic,cholinesterase and tyrosinase inhibitory potential of fresh juice from Citrus hystrix and C.maxima fruits显示文摘In the present study,antioxidant potential,α-amylase,α-glucosidase,cholinesterase and tyrosinase inhibitory activity of fresh juice from indigenous fruits of Citrus hystrix and C.maxima(Red&White var.)were investigated using an in vitro model.The contents of total phenolics,tannins,and total flavonoids ranged between 836.90 and 909.52 mg gallic acid equivalent(GAE)/L,333.33 and 523.21 mg gallic acid equivalent(GAE)/L and 224.88 and 262.22 mg rutin equivalent/L,respectively.The antioxidant activity of fresh juice was evaluated by employing different in vitro assays such as reducing power assay,DPPH•,ABTS•+and•OH radical scavenging capacities,peroxidation inhibition activity,antihemolytic assay.In addition,75.55%–79.75%ofα-amylase and 70.68%–72.83%ofα-glucosidase enzyme inhibition characteristics were found under in vitro starch digestion bioassay.Also,all the juice samples exhibited excellent tyrosinase(76.95%–80.79%),acetylcholinesterase(75.71%–79.74%)andβ-glucuronidase inhibitory activity(68.13%–69.38%).These results indicated that fresh juice of C.hystrix and C.maxima(Red&White var.)could be used as a source of antioxidant agents,functional food and nutraceuticals.©2014 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.Arumugam Abirami Gunasekaran Nagarani Perumal Siddhuraju 2014Food Science and Human Wellness2014,3,1:8
4Antibacterial potential of three seagrasses against human pathogens显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activity of Halophila stipulacea(H.stipulacea), Cymodocea serrulata(C.serrulata) and Halodule pinifolia(H.pinifolia) against seven human bacterial pathogens.Methods:The antibacterial activities of the extracts on the various test organisms using disc diffusion method and Minimum Inhibitory Concentraction(MIC).Results: Methanol and chloroform extracts of all the three seagrasses were active against all the tested pathogens,whereas the hexane extract of seagrasses was not active against Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus).Antibacterial activity of three seagrass screened,was in the order of H.pinifolia > H.stipulacea.> C.serrulata.Conclusions:This antibacterial studies can further investigated on seagrasses for purification of bioactive substance and its possible utility in disease control.Rengasamy Ragupathi Raja Kannan Rajasekaran Arumugam Perumal Anantharaman 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,11:7
5Effect of angioembolisation versus surgical packing on mortality in traumatic pelvic haemorrhage: A systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND: The management of complex pattern of bleeding associated with pelvic trauma remains a big challenge for trauma surgeons. We aimed to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis to compare the outcomes of angioembolisation and pelvic packing in patients with pelvic trauma.METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of electronic information sources, including MEDLINE; EMBASE; CINAHL; the CENTRAL; the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry; Clinical Trials.gov; ISRCTN Register, and bibliographic reference lists. The primary outcome was defined as mortality. Combined overall effect sizes were calculated using randomeffects models. Results are reported as the odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI).RESULTS: We identified 3 observational studies reporting a total of 120 patients undergoing angioembolisation(n=60) or pelvic packing(n=60) for pelvic trauma. Reporting of the Injury Severity Score(ISS) was variable, with higher ISS in the pelvic packing group. The risk of bias was low in two studies, and moderate in one. The pooled analysis demonstrated that angioembolisation did not significantly reduce mortality in patients with pelvic trauma compared to surgery(OR=1.99; 95% CI= 0.83–4.78, P=0.12). There was mild between-study heterogeneity(I^2=0%, P=0.65).CONCLUSION: Our analysis found no significant difference in mortality between angioembolisation and pelvic packing in patients with traumatic pelvic haemorrhage. The current level of evidence in this context is very limited and insufficient to support the superiority of a treatment modality. 6Thymoquinone inhibits the migration of mouse neuroblastoma(Neuro-2a) cells by down-regulating MMP-2 and MMP-9显示文摘Thymoquinone(TQ), an active component derived from the medial plant Nigella sativa, has been used for medical purposes for more than 2 000 years. Recent studies have reported that TQ blocked angiogenesis in animal model and reduced migration, adhesion, and invasion of glioblastoma cells. We have recently shown that TQ could exhibit a potent cytotoxic effect and induce apoptosis in mouse neuroblastoma(Neuro-2a) cells. In the present study, TQ treatment markedly decreased the adhesion and migration of Neuro-2a cells. TQ down-regulated MMP-2 and MMP-9 protein expression and m RNA levels and their activities. Furthermore, TQ significantly down-regulated the protein expression of transcription factor NF-κB(p65) but not significantly altered the expression of N-Myc. 7High absorption large-mode area step-index fiber for tandem-pumped high-brightnes shigh-power lasers显示文摘A short absorption length ytterbium(Yb)-doped large-mode area(LMA)fiber is presented as a step forward to mitigate the stern problem of nonlinear scatterings in a tandem pumping scheme adopted for high-power fiber laser.The short absorption length was realized by incorporating high Yb concentration in the fiber core.Furthermore,by replacing the inherent silica cladding with a Ge-doped cladding,we were able to obtain low core numerical aperture(NA)and negate the detrimental effect of index-raising by high Yb concentrations.This overcomes the long-standing limitation in step-index Yb-doped fibers(YDFs)where high cladding absorption inevitably results in high NA,thus hampering single-mode operation.We report an LMA(~575μm^2)YDF with NA of 0.04 and absorption of 27 dB/m at 976 nm both traits promote power scaling of single-mode tandem pumped fiber lasers.To our knowledge,this is the highest cladding absorption attained in a low-NA step-index fiber to date.An all-fiber tandem-pumped amplifier was built using only^14 m of the YDF.The amplifier delivered a near-Gaussian beam(M^i.27)at 836 W output power(pump power limited)with a high slope efficiency of^83%.Thanks to the short length and the tandem pumping,no indication of limiting factors such as stimulated Raman scattering,photodarkening,and transverse mode instability was observed.KANG-JIE LIM SAMUEL KA-WEN SEAH JOASH YONG'EN YE WENDY WEIYING LIM CHU-PERNG SEAH YUNN-BOON TAN SUTING TAN HUITING LIM RAGHURAMAN SIDHARTHAN ARUMUGAM RAJENDRA PRASADH CHEN-JIAN CHAN SEONGWOO YOO SONG-LIANG CHUA 2020Photonics Research2020,8,10:5

9Nitrate additives for lithium batteries:Mechanisms,applications,and prospects显示文摘Lithium-metal batteries(LMBs)are considered as one of the most promising energy storage devices due to the high energy density and low reduction potential of the Li-metal anode.However,the growth of lithium dendrites results in accumulated dead Li and safety issues,limiting the practical application of LMBs.LiNO_(3)is a well-known additive in lithium-sulfur batteries to regulate the solid-electrolyte interphase(SEI),effectively suppressing the redox shuttle of polysulfides.Recently,other nitrates have been investigated in various electrolyte and battery systems,yielding improved SEI stability and cycling performance.In this review,we provide an overview of various nitrates,including LiNO_(3)for lithium batteries,focusing on their mechanisms and performance.We first discuss the effect of nitrate anions on SEI formation,as well as the cathode-electrolyte interphase(CEI).The solvation behavior regulated by nitrates is also extensively explored.Some strategies to improve the solubility of LiNO_(3)in ester-based electrolytes are then summarized,followed by a discussion of recent progress in the application of nitrates in different systems.Finally,further research directions are presented,along with challenges.This review provides a comprehensive understanding of nitrates and affords new and interesting ideas for the design of better electrolytes and battery systems.Xiang Li Ruxin Zhao Yongzhu Fu Arumugam Manthiram 2021eScience2021,1,2:5
10纳米钯催化苄基氯代物与烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯的羧化Suzuki偶联反应(英文)显示文摘CO_2是廉价的Cl源,同时具有无毒、储量丰富的优点,符合绿色化学发展要求.利用CO_2构筑新的C-C键是化学固定CO_2的重要方法.β,γ-不饱和酯类结构单元是许多生物活性分子的重要组成部分,经由双π-烯丙基钯中间体与CO_2反应,合成新的β,γ-不饱和酯类化合物,具有重要意义.CO_2与有机硼化合物的羧化反应己有报道,有机硼化合物具有低毒、对水不敏感等优点.但是己报道的羧化Suzuki偶联反应存在诸多缺点:(1)需要使用含膦或者氮杂环卡宾配体的催化剂,而这些催化剂的制备过程使前期实验步骤变得冗长,同时反应液的酸化后处理过程也会造成环境污染;(2)有机硼试剂的官能团兼容范围窄,限制了底物范围的拓展.本课题组以原位生成的纳米钯粒子为催化剂,在CO_2存在的温和条件下,高效实现了苄氯与烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯的羧化Suzuki偶联反应.反应过程中无其它配体加入,反应结束后不需要酸化或酯化的后处理过程.该反应将具有广泛的官能团兼容性.本文以TBAB稳定的纳米钯粒子为催化剂,在温和条件下,实现了氯甲基芳香化合物、烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯和CO_2的三组分羧化Suzuki偶联反应.最佳反应条件为:Pd(acac)_2(5mol%)、TBAB(0.7mmol,1.4 equiv.)、KF(1mmol,2.0 equiv.)、苄基卤代物(0.5 mmol)、烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯(0.6 mmol,1.2 equiv.)、CO_2(2.0 MPa)、溶剂THF(5 mL),50℃反应24h.在最佳反应条件下,苯环、萘环以及杂芳环的氯甲基化合物均可发生该羧化反应.苯环上取代基的位置对产物的收率有影响.当使用1-溴甲基萘作为底物时反应也能够发生,收率与1-氯甲基萘作为底物时的收率相当.与已报道有机硼试剂的羧化反应相比,该反应体系无需加入配体,原位生成了纳米钯粒子,避免了催化剂或者配体的复杂制备过程.该反应中,氟离子的存在是必要的,对烯丙基硼酸频哪醇酯具有活化作用.孙健 王加升 冯秀娟 Yoshinori Yamamoto Abdulrahman I.Almansour Natarajan Arumugam Raju Suresh Kumar 包明 2018Chinese Journal of Catalysis2018,39,7:4
11A comparative study on antioxidant potentials,inhibitory activities against key enzymes related to metabolic syndrome,and anti-inflammatory activity of leaf extract from different Momordica species显示文摘Momordica species are vegetable crops widely distributed in warmer regions of the world.In this work,we describe the antioxidant,enzyme inhibitory and anti-inflammatory effects of the leaves from three different species of Momordica.The present investigation was initially carried out to explore the possible link between antioxidant,enzyme inhibitory property of Momordica leaf extract and their total phenolic and flavonoid contents.The anti-inflammatory activity was tested by using carrageenan-induced paw edema.Our results illustrated an enhanced antioxidant power of wild species comparable with a commercial variety.In addition,the leaf extract of M.dioica(200 mg/kg)presented a significant anti-inflammatory activity toward carrageenan-induced paw edema in Wistar rats in comparison to indomethacin(10 mg/kg).The contents of flavonoids and total phenolic compounds could be correlated with the antioxidant and enzymes inhibition activities.The major bioactive compounds of phenolic acids and flavonoids such as gallic acid,chlorogenic acid,caffeic acid,ferulic acid,ellagic acid,catechin,rutin,and quercetin were identified.Our findings suggest that wild Momordica species contains higher potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities than a commercial variety does,which could be tested as drug candidates against oxidative and inflammation-related pathological processes.©2014 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.Gunasekaran Nagarani Arumugam Abirami Perumal Siddhuraju 2014Food Science and Human Wellness2014,3,1:4

14Hepatoprotective effect of leaf extracts from Citrus hystrix and C.maxima against paracetamol induced liver injury in rats显示文摘The present investigation is aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of Citrus hystrix and Citrus maxima(Red and White variety)methanolic leaf extracts on paracetamol induced toxicity.Leaf extracts were given in the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight for 7 days and toxicity was induced by paracetamol(2 g/kg)on day 5.Silymarin(100 mg/kg body weight)was used as reference standard.On the 7th day animals were sacrificed and liver function markers(ALT,AST,ALP),total bilirubin and total protein in blood serums and hepatic antioxidants(SOD,CAT,GSH and GPx)in liver homogenate were estimated.The leaf extracts restored the liver function markers and hepatic antioxidants to the normal level than elevated levels noticed on paracetamol control at P<0.001.Reversal of hepatoarchitecture has also been registered.The present study shows that C.hystrix and C.maxima leaf extracts possess hepatoprotective action against paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity.©2015 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.Arumugam Abirami Gunasekaran Nagarani Perumal Siddhuraju 2015Food Science and Human Wellness2015,4,1:3

17Scalable Membraneless Direct Liquid Fuel Cells Based on a Catalyst-Selective Strategy显示文摘This perspective presents a membraneless direct liquid fuel cell(DLFC)concept based on a catalyst-selective strategy.The membraneless DLFCs are operated at low temperatures by employing a non-precious cathode catalyst with a high catalytic selectivity.The uniqueness is that the inexpensive cathode catalyst only catalyzes the oxygen reduction reaction but does not catalyze the oxidation reaction of a specific fuel.Therefore,during the operation of DLFCs,the liquid fuel can enter the cathode freely without any concern of fuel crossover.This catalyst-selective approach tactfully avoids the use of high-cost or technically unviable ion-exchange polymer membranes in DLFCs.The catalyst-selective operating principle also overcomes the scalability issue of the traditional laminar-flow membraneless DLFCs.Through a proper management of the anode and cathode catalysts in the cell,a variety of inexpensive,renewable alcohols,and small-molecule organics can be employed as anode fuels.This innovative approach of membraneless alkaline DLFCs offers a great opportunity for the development of inexpensive energy-generation systems for both mobile and stationary applications.In addition to summarizing the principle and the research progress of the unique membraneless DLFC platform,the challenges and future research directions are presented.Xingwen Yu Arumugam Manthiram 2018Energy & Environmental Materials2018,1,1:3

19非负载纳米多孔钯催化喹啉及其衍生物的化学选择性氢化反应:H_2分子异裂(英文)显示文摘纳米多孔金属是近十年发展起来的一类具有三维通孔结构的新型功能材料,其由纳米尺度的细孔和韧带构成,具有极大的比表面积;它还是一种无毒无载体的宏观材料,并且易制备、易回收和重复利用,因此作为高效的非均相催化剂已逐渐引起人们的重视.1,2,3,4-四氢喹啉是许多医药、农药、染料和天然产物的重要骨架.通过喹啉及其衍生物的选择性加氢反应制备1,2,3,4-四氢喹啉,具有原子利用率高和原料易得等优点.在过去,已经开发了许多类型的均相和非均相催化体系,并成功地用于催化喹啉及其衍生物的选择性加氢反应.尽管非均相催化体系具有诸多优点,但仍存在H_2压力(10–50 atm)和反应温度(60–150℃)相对较高的缺点.因此,开发更加温和条件下的喹啉及其衍生物的选择性加氢反应具有重要意义.此外,在喹啉及其衍生物的加氢反应过程中,H_2分子在非均相催化剂表面的裂解模式,即均裂还是异裂尚不清楚.因此,本文采用新型非均相催化剂纳米多孔钯,研究了喹啉及其衍生物的选择性加氢反应,在相对较低的H_2压力(2–5 atm)和温度(室温–50℃)下实现了目标反应,高收率、高选择性地得到1,2,3,4-四氢喹啉化合物.在最佳反应条件下,对底物的适用范围进行了考察.结果表明,各种含喹啉结构单元的化合物均能顺利发生反应,产物收率在62%–95%.而且该反应对甲基、甲氧基、羟基、酯基、醛基、酰胺基、卤素(F,Cl和Br)等官能团具有较好的兼容性.苯环上取代基的电子效应对反应有一定的影响,吸电子基有利于目标反应的进行.反应完成后,纳米多孔钯催化剂很容易回收,且循环使用多次后,仍未见催化活性降低.扫描电镜和透射电镜结果发现,循环使用后的纳米多孔钯催化剂结构没有发生明显改变,表明其结构稳定.浸出实验结果证明,没有钯原子浸出到反应液中,表明该纳米多孔钯催化反应属于多相催化过程.喹啉的选择性氢化反应被放大到克级的规模时,目标产物的收率仅略有降低,说明该方法具有很好的实用性.通过动力学实验发现,随着反应的进行,反应速率不断加快,表明反应过程中生成的乙胺和1,2,3,4-四氢喹啉同样扮演着路易斯碱性添加剂的角色,促进了反应的进行.通过反应机理研究,揭示了H–H键在纳米多孔钯表面发生了异裂,原位形成的Pd–H物种作为弱亲核试剂,对目标反应的选择性控制起到了至关重要的作用.卢烨 Yoshinori Yamamoto Abdulrahman I.Almansour Natarajan Arumugam Raju Suresh Kumar 包明 2018Chinese Journal of Catalysis2018,39,11:2
