| 1 | Comparative transcriptome analyses shed light on carotenoid production and plastid development in melon fruit显示文摘Carotenoids, such asβ-carotene,accumulate in chromoplasts of various fleshy fruits, awarding them with colors, aromas, and nutrients. The Orange(CmOr)gene controlsβ-carotene accumulation in melon fruit by posttranslationally enhancing carotenogenesis and repressingβ-carotene turnover in chromoplasts.Carotenoid isomerase(CRTISO)isomerizes yellow prolycopene into red lycopene,a prerequisite for further metabolism intoβ-carotene.We comparatively analyzed the developing fruit transcriptomes of orange-colored melon and its two isogenic EMS-induced mutants,low-β(Cmor)and yofi(Cmcrtiso). The Cmor mutation in low-βcaused a major transcriptomic change in the mature fruit. In contrast, the Cmcrtiso mutation in yofi significantly changed the transcriptome only in early fruit developmental stages. These findings indicate that melon fruit transcriptome is primarily altered by changes in carotenoid metabolic flux and plastid conversion, but minimally by carotenoid composition in the ripe fruit.Clustering of the differentially expressed genes into functional groups revealed an association between fruit carotenoid metabolic flux with the maintenance of the photosynthetic apparatus in fruit chloroplasts. Moreover, large numbers of thylakoid localized photosynthetic genes were differentially expressed in low-β.CmOR family proteins were found to physically interact with light-harvesting chlorophyll a–b binding proteins, suggesting a new role of CmOR for chloroplast maintenance in melon fruit. This study brings more insights into the cellular and metabolic processes associated with fruit carotenoid accumulation in melon fruit and reveals a new maintenance mechanism of the photosynthetic apparatus for plastid development. | Noam Chayut Hui Yuan Yuval Saar Yi Zheng Tianhu Sun Xuesong Zhou Anna Hermanns Elad Oren Adi Faigenboim Maixia Hui Zhangjun Fei Michael Mazourek Joseph Burger Yaakov Tadmor Li Li | 2021 | Horticulture Research2021,8,1: | 3 |

| 9 | Extreme biomimetic approach for developing novel chitin-GeO2 nanocomposites with photoluminescent properties显示文摘This work presents an extreme biomimetics route for the creation of nano- structured biocomposites utilizing a chitinous template of poriferan origin. The specific thermal stability of the nanostructured chitinous template allowed for the formation under hydrothermal conditions of a novel germanium oxide- chitin composite with a defined nanoscale structure. Using a variety of analytical techniques (FTIR, Raman, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, EDS-mapping, selected area for the electron diffraction pattern (SAEDP), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)), we showed that this bioorganic scaffold induces the growth of GeO2 nanocrystals with a narrow (150-300 nm) size distri- bution and predominantly hexagonal phase, demonstrating the chitin template's control over the crystal morphology. The formed GeO2-chitin composite showed several specific physical properties, such as a striking enhancement in photo- luminescence exceeding values previously reported in GeOR-based biomaterials. These data demonstrate the potential of extreme biomimetics for developing new-generation nanostructured materials. | Marcin Wysokowski Mykhailo Motylenko Jan Beyer Anna Makarova Hartmut Stocker Juliane Walter Roberta Galli Sabine Kaiser Denis Vyalikh Vasilii V. | 10 | Advanced mid-infrared plasmonic waveguides for on-chip integrated photonics显示文摘Long-wave infrared(LWIR, 8–14 μm) photonics is a rapidly growing research field within the mid-IR with applications in molecular spectroscopy and optical free-space communication. LWIR applications are often addressed using rather bulky tabletop-sized free-space optical systems, preventing advanced photonic applications, such as rapid-time-scale experiments. Here, device miniaturization into photonic integrated circuits(PICs) with maintained optical capabilities is key to revolutionize mid-IR photonics. Subwavelength mode confinement in plasmonic structures enabled such miniaturization approaches in the visible-to-near-IR spectral range. However, adopting plasmonics for the LWIR needs suitable low-loss and-dispersion materials with compatible integration strategies to existing mid-IR technology. In this paper, we further unlock the field of LWIR/mid-IR PICs by combining photolithographic patterning of organic polymers with dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton(DLSPP) waveguides. In particular, polyethylene shows favorable optical properties, including low refractive index and broad transparency between ~2 μm and 200 μm. We investigate the whole value chain, including design, fabrication, and characterization of polyethylene-based DLSPP waveguides and demonstrate their first-time plasmonic operation and mode guiding capabilities along S-bend structures. Low bending losses of ~1.3 d B and straight-section propagation lengths of ~1 mm, pave the way for unprecedented complex on-chip mid-IR photonic devices. Moreover, DLSPPs allow full control of the mode parameters(propagation length and guiding capabilities) for precisely addressing advanced sensing and telecommunication applications with chip-scale devices. | MAURO DAVID DAVIDE DISNAN ELENA ARIGLIANI ANNA LARDSCHNEIDER GEORG MARSCHICK HANH T.HOANG HERMANN DETZ BERNHARD LENDL ULRICH SCHMID GOTTFRIED STRASSER BORISLAV HINKOV | 2023 | Photonics Research2023,11,10: | 0 |
