1Connexin 43 hemichannels protect bone loss during estrogen deficiency显示文摘Estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women is a major cause of bone loss,resulting in osteopenia,osteoporosis,and a high risk for bone fracture.Connexin 43 (Cx43) hemichannels (HCs) in osteocytes play an important role in osteocyte viability,bone formation,and remodeling.We showed here that estrogen deficiency reduced Cx43 expression and HC function.To determine if functional HCs protect osteocytes and bone loss during estrogen deficiency,we adopted an ovariectomy model in wild-type (WT) and two transgenic Cx43 mice:R76W (dominant-negative mutant inhibiting only gap junction channels) and Cx43 Δ130–136 (dominant-negative mutant compromising both gap junction channels and HCs).The bone mineral density (BMD),bone structure,and histomorphometric changes of cortical and trabecular bones after ovariectomy were investigated.Our results showed that the Δ130–136 transgenic cohort had greatly decreased vertebral trabecular bone mass compared to WT and R76W mice,associated with a significant increase in the number of apoptotic osteocyte and empty lacunae.Moreover,osteoclast surfaces in trabecular and cortical bones were increased after ovariectomy in the R76W and WT mice,respectively,but not in Δ130–136 mice.These data demonstrate that impairment of Cx43 HCs in osteocytes accelerates vertebral trabecular bone loss and increase in osteocyte apoptosis,and further suggest that Cx43 HCs in osteocytes protect trabecular bone against catabolic effects due to estrogen deficiency.Liang Ma Rui Hua Yi Tian Hongyun Cheng Roberto Jose Fajardo Joseph J. 3A generalized supervised classification scheme to produce provincial wetland inventory maps:an application of Google Earth Engine for big geo data processing显示文摘Wetlands are important natural resources due to their numerous ecological services.Consequently,identifying their locations and extents is imperative.The stability,repeatability,cost-effectiveness,multi-scale coverage,and proper spatial resolution imagery of satellites provide a valuable opportunity for their use in various large-scale applications,such as provincial wetland mapping.To do so,it is required to(1)process and classify big geo data(i.e.a large amount of satellite datasets)in a time-and computationally-efficient approach and(2)collect a large amount of field samples.In this study,Google Earth Engine(GEE)and machine learning algorithms were utilized to process thousands of remote sensing images and produce provincial wetland inventory maps of the three Canadian provinces of Manitoba,Quebec,and Newfoundland and Labrador(NL).Additionally,using GEE,a generalized supervised classification method is proposed to produce a regional wetland map from a large area(e.g.,a province)when lacking field samples.In fact,using the field data from only Manitoba and assuming that all wetlands in Canada have similar characteristics,the wetland maps were generated for the other two provinces.The overall classification accuracies for Manitoba,Quebec,and NL were 84%,78%,and 82%,respectively,indicating the high potential of the proposed method for aiding provincial wetland inventory systems.Meisam Amani Brian Brisco Majid Afshar S.Mohammad Mirmazloumi Sahel Mahdavi Sayyed Mohammad Javad Mirzadeh Weimin Huang Jean Granger 2019Big Earth Data2019,3,4:4

9Modeling impacts of climate change on the potential distribution of six endemic baobab species in Madagascar显示文摘Madagascar,a globally renowned biodiversity hotspot characterized by high rates of endemism,is one of the few remaining refugia for many plants and animal species.However,global climate change has greatly affected the natural ecosystem and endemic species living in Madagascar,and will likely continue to influence species distribution in the future.Madagascar is home to six endemic baobab(Adansonia spp.,Bombacoideae[Malvaceae])species(Adansonia grandidieri,A.suarezensis,A.madagascariensis,A.perrieri,A.rubrostipa,A.za),which are remarkable and endangered plants.This study aimed to model the current distribution of suitable habitat for each baobab species endemic to Madagascar and determine the effect that climate change will have on suitable baobab habitat by the years 2050 and 2070.The distribution was modeled using MaxEnt based on locality information of 245 occurrence sites of six species from both online database and our own field work.A total of seven climatic variables were used for the modeling process.The present distribution of all six Madagascar's baobabs was largely influenced by temperature-related factors.Although both expansion and contraction of suitable habitat are predicted for all species,loss of original suitable habitat is predicted to be extensive.For the most widespread Madagascar baobab,A.za,more than 40%of its original habitat is predicted to be lost because of climate change.Based on these findings,we recommend that areas predicted to contract in response to climate change should be designated key protection regions for baobab conservation.Jun-Nan Wan Ndungu J.Mbari Sheng-Wei Wang Bing Liu Brian N.Mwangi Jean R.E.Rasoarahona Hai-Ping Xin Ya-Dong Zhou Qing-Feng Wang 2021Plant Diversity2021,43,2:2
