Late Quaternary surface deformation and rupture behavior of strong earthquake on the segment north of Mianning of the Anninghe fault显示文摘The Anninghe fault is an important active fault along the eastern boundary of Sichuan-Yunnan active tectonic block, and the study of its surface deformation and rupture behavior during strong earthquake in the late Quaternary is of fundamental importance for understanding the future seismic risk of the fault zone or even the entire western Sichuan region. Using the methods of detailed geomorphic and geological survey, digital image analysis, total station instrument survey, excavation of combined trench and dating, we analyze the geomorphologic sequences of the offset strata at several sites where the late Quaternary deformation remnants are fairly well preserved and obtain some new results as follows: Strong earthquake events with left-lateral displacements of about 3 m occurred at the two sites of Zimakua and Yejitong at 1634-1811, 1030-1050 and 280-550 a BP, respectively, and the recurrence interval is 520-660 a; The youngest event in the area of Dahaizi-Ganhaizi should be the earthquake of 1536, other events are at 1768-1826, 2755-4108 and 4108-6593 a BP, respectively, with a recurrence interval of 1300-1900 a. The strong earthquake activity shows a clustering character. The possibility of occurrence of a strong earthquake exists on the north segment of the Anninghe fault sometime in the future. | RAN YongKang CHEN LiChun CHENG JianWu GONG HuiLing | 2008 | Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,9: | 25
The Lushan M_S7.0 earthquake and activity of the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone显示文摘Following the Lushan MS7.0 earthquake on 20 April 2013,a topic of much concern is whether events of MS7 or greater could occur again on the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone.In providing evidence to answer this question, this work analyzes the tectonic relationship between the Lushan event and the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and the rupture history of the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone, through field investigations of active tectonics and paleoearthquake research, and our preliminary conclusions are as follows. The activity of the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone is much different to that of its central section, and the late Quaternary activity has propagated forward to the basin in the east. The seismogenic structure of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake is the central-fore-range fault system, whereas that of the 2013 Lushan event is attributed to the fore-range-range-front fault system, rather than the central fault. The southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone becomes wider towards the south with an increasing number of secondary faults,of which the individual faults exhibit much weaker surface activity. Therefore, this section is not as capable of generating a major earthquake as is the central segment. It is most likely that the 2013 earthquake fills the seismic gap around Lushan on the southern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone. | CHEN LiChun RAN YongKang WANG Hu LI YanBao MA XinQuan | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,28: | 24
The M_S7.1 Yushu earthquake surface rupture and large historical earthquakes on the Garzê-Yushu Fault显示文摘As revealed by field investigations, the co-seismic surface rupture zone of the 2010 MS7.1 Yushu earthquake,Qinghai is a characteristic sinistral strike-slip feature consisting of three distinct sinistral primary ruptures, with an overall strike of 310°-320° and a total length of 31 km.In addition,an approximately 2-km-long en-echelon tensile fissure zone was found east of Longbao Town;if this site is taken as the north end of the rupture zone, then the rupture had a total length of ~51 km.The surface rupture zone is composed of a series of fissures arranged in an en-echelon or alternating relationship between compressive bulges and tensile fissures, with a measured maximum horizontal displacement of 1.8 m.The surface rupture zone extends along the mapped Garzê-Yushu Fault, which implicates it as the seismogenic fault for this earthquake.Historically,a few earthquakes with a magnitude of about 7 have occurred along the fault, and additionally traces of paleoearthquakes are evident that characterize the short-period recurrence interval of large earthquakes here.Similar to the seismogenic process of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the Yushu earthquake is also due to the stress accumulation and release on the block boundaries resulting from the eastward expansion of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However,in contrast with the Wenchuan earthquake, the Yushu earthquake had a sinistral strike-slip mechanism resulting from the uneven eastward extrusion of the Baryan Har and Sichuan-Yunnan fault blocks. | CHEN LiChun WANG Hu RAN YongKang SUN XinZhe SU GuiWu WANG Ji TAN XiBin LI ZhiMin ZHANG XiaoQing | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,31: | 17
High precision landing site mapping and rover localization for Chang'e-3 mission显示文摘This paper presents the comprehensive results of landing site topographic mapping and rover localization in Chang’e-3 mission.High-precision topographic products of the landing site with extremely high resolutions(up to 0.05 m)were generated from descent images and registered to CE-2 DOM.Local DEM and DOM with 0.02 m resolution were produced routinely at each waypoint along the rover traverse. The lander location was determined to be(19.51256°W,44.11884°N,-2615.451 m)using a method of DOM matching. In order to reduce error accumulation caused by wheel slippage and IMU drift in dead reckoning,cross-site visual localization and DOM matching localization methods were developed to localize the rover at waypoints;the overall traveled distance from the lander is 114.8 m from cross-site visual localization and 111.2 m from DOM matching localization. The latter is of highest accuracy and has been verified using a LRO NAC image where the rover trajeactory is directly identifiable.During CE-3 mission operations, landing site mapping and rover localization products including DEMs and DOMs,traverse maps, vertical traverse profiles were generated timely to support teleoperation tasks such as obstacle avoidance and rover path planning. | LIU ZhaoQin DI KaiChang PENG Man WAN WenHui LIU Bin LI LiChun YU TianYi WANG BaoFeng ZHOU JianLiang CHEN HongMin | 2015 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2015,58,1: | 15
Stability analysis of the temperature cracks in Xiaowan arch dam显示文摘In the Xiaowan arch dam there are massive temperature cracks nearly parallel to the dam axis. Obviously, whether the cracks may spread or not during the water storage process is one of the crucial factors for the safety of a dam. In this paper, a new type of crack element, in which the contact component is implicitly included into the concrete component, is proposed to simulate the effects of the existing cracks. The crack element is proved by numerical example to share the merits of both conventional contact elements and joint elements. With a finite element model of the cracked arch dam together with its rock foundation established, the transient displacement and stress fields of the dam are obtained. The complicated rock foundation, the construction process of the arch dam, the massive cracks, the transient temperature field, as well as the water storage process have been taken into consideration in the simulation. In addition to the global model, several sub-models for typical crack tips are also generated with finer elements placed around the tips. Thus, more accurate displacement and stress distribution are obtained by simultaneous sub-model simulation. Based on the calculation of stress intensity factor for crack tips by extension method, the temperature cracks in the Xiaowan arch dam are finally proved to be stable. | WANG WeiMing DING JianXin WANG GuoJin ZOU LiChun CHEN ShengHong | 2011 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2011,54,3: | 12
Geological analysis and FT dating of the large-scale right-lateral strike-slip movement of the Red River fault zone显示文摘Tectonically, the large-scale right-lateral strike-slip movement along the Red River fault zone is char-acterized at its late phase with the southeastward extension and deformation of the Northwestern Yunnan normal fault depression on its northern segment, and the dextral shear displacement on its central-southern segment. Research of the relations between stratum deformation and fault movement on the typical fault segments, such as Jianchuan, southeast Midu, Yuanjiang River, Yuanyang, etc. since the Miocene Epoch shows that there are two times dextral faulting dominated by normal shearing occurring along the Red River fault zone since the Miocene Epoch. The fission track dating (abbrevi-ated to FT dating, the same below) is conducted on apatite samples collected from the above fault segments and relating to these movements. Based on the measured single grain’s age and the con-fined track length, we choose the Laslet annealing model to retrieve the thermal history of the samples, and the results show that the fault zone experienced two times obvious shear displacement, one in 5.5 ± 1.5 MaBP and the other in 2.1± 0.8 MaBP. The central-southern segment sees two intensive uplifts of mountain mass in the Yuanjiang River-Yuanyang region at 3.6―3.8 MaBP and 1.6―2.3 MaBP, which correspond to the above-mentioned two dextral normal displacement events since the late Miocene Epoch. | XIANG HongFa WAN JingLin HAN ZhuJun GUO ShunMin ZHANG WanXia CHEN LiChun DONG XingQuan | 2007 | Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,3: | 10
Evaluation of cracking potential for concrete arch dam based on simulation feedback analysis显示文摘It is still very difficult for researchers and engineers to implement the simulation analysis including a complete process and a full model with the complicated arch dam and the foundation, and to evaluate the cracking potential in the construction and service periods. To take Xiaowan project of China for an example, a practical system of simulation feedback analysis, a specific cracking criterion, and a resolution for the conflicting requirements of temperature and stress/strain simulation are presented, which are put into a successful practice. The simulation results of temperature, stress, and cracking are identical well with the monitor data. A modified temperature control measure is propounded, and the significant effect is gained by adopting the new scheme. | FU ShaoJun HE Ting WANG GuoJin ZHANG ShiHu ZOU LiChun CHEN ShengHong | 2011 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2011,54,3: | 10
The maximum coseismic vertical surface displacement and surface deformation pattern accompanying the Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake显示文摘The amount of coseismic deformation and its distribution of the Wenchuan earthquake provide important scientific bases for revealing the mechanisms of earthquake preparation and characterizing the rupture propagation of the Wenchuan earthquake. The previous studies have indicated that the earthquake ruptured the middle-to-north segment of the Longmenshan central fault and the middle segment of the Longmenshan range-front fault, which are characterized by two surface rupture zones of 240 km and 90 km in length, respectively. Based on the pre-earthquake information and photos of landforms and buildings obtained through ge-ologic and geomorphic survey of the area around Shaba Village of Beichuan County, Sichuan Province and the extensive interview with local villagers, we measured the displacements of the major terrain features and the dislocated buildings by total station instruments and differential GPS and obtained the maximum vertical displacement of 9±0.5 m and right-lateral displacement of 2±0.5 m around the Zou’s house in Shaba Village. Though the near-surface deformation exhibits a normal faulting around Shaba Village, the dynamic environment has not changed on the whole. The NW wall of the fault uplifted but without gravity gliding as normally occurring on the hanging wall of a normal fault, which proves that the 9±0.5 m displacement should be the maximum coseismic vertical displacement of the May 12, 2008 Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake. | Ran YongKang Shi Xiang Wang Hu Chen LiChun Chen Jie Liu RuiChun Gong Huiling | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,9: | 9
Reservoir differences and formation mechanisms in the Ke-Bai overthrust belt, northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin,China显示文摘There are some differences in reservoir quality of clastic rock between the hanging wall and the foot wall of the Ke-Bai overthrust belt, northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin, western China, which affect the effi cient petroleum exploration in this highly mature exploration area. Based on a large number of thin-sections,cast thin-sections,and physical property analysis of cores,we systematically discuss the Permian-Jurassic reservoir differences between the hanging wall and the foot wall of the Ke-Bai overthrust fault from the aspects of structural evolution,time-space distribution of the depositional system, diagenesis characteristics, and reservoir quality and analyzed the reasons for the differences in reservoir properties. The overthrusting of the Ke-Bai fault directly results in different burial histories, diagenesis evolution, and porosity evolution between the hanging wall and the foot wall. The differences of reservoir characteristics are mainly embodied in buried depth, grain size, sedimentary facies, diagenetic stage, and reservoir quality. The analysis results showed that burial history and depositional characteristics controlled by overthrusting are direct influencing factors of reservoir differences. Because of shallow burial depth of the hanging wall, the reservoir compaction is weak and primary pores are preserved well. The porosity of reservoir on the hanging wall is generally 10%-25%. The strata on the foot wall are deeply buried, and there are mainly mixed pores with the average porosity of 5%-20%. The favorable reservoir on the foot wall is generally developed near faults or in the channel sand bodies, which are usually dissolution development areas. | Zhu Xiaomin Zhu Shifa Xian Benzhong Chen Shuping Kuang Lichun Xue Xinke Xue Jingjing You Xincai | 2010 | Petroleum Science2010,7,1: | 7
Measurement of terrace deformation and crustal shortening of some renascent fold zones within Kalpin nappe structure显示文摘The Kalpin nappe structure is a strongest thrust and fold deformation belt in front of the Tianshan Mountains since the Cenozoic time. The tectonic deformation occurred in 5―6 striking Meso-zoic-Cenozoic fold zones, and some renascent folds formed on the recent alluvial-proluvial fans in front of the folded mountains. We used the total station to measure gully terraces along the longitudinal to-pographic profile in the renascent fold zones and collected samples from terrace deposits for age de-termination. Using the obtained formation time and shortening amount of the deformed terraces, we calculated the shortening rate of 4 renascent folds to be 0.1±0.03 mm/a, 0.12±0.04 mm/a, 0.59±0.18 mm/a, and 0.26±0.08 mm/a, respectively. The formation time of the renascent folds is some later than the major tectonic uplift event of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau 0.14 Ma ago. It may be the long-distance effect of this tectonic event on the Tianshan piedmont fold belt. | YANG XiaoPing RAN YongKang CHENG JianWu CHEN LiChun XU XiWei | 2007 | Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,1: | 7

Active blocks and strong seismic activity in North China region显示文摘The active North China block consists of three second-order blocks: Ordos, North China Plain, and East Shandong-Huanghai Sea blocks. Two active tectonic zones, the Anyang-Heze- Linyi and Tangshan-Cixian zones, exist in the active North China Plain block and have separated the active block into 3 third-order active blocks, Taihangshan, Hebei-Shandong, and Henan-Huai blocks. The 3 third-order active blocks are characterized by their entire motion and are clearly different in their Cenozoic structures and deep structures. The active boundary tectonic zones between the third-order active blocks are less than those between the first- and second-order active blocks in their movement strength, extent, and seismic activity. The density of M ≥ 6 earthquakes in the boundary zones between active blocks is higher than that within the blocks by 9-22 times in the North China region, up to one order of magnitude on average. M ≥ 7 earthquakes occurred basically in the boundary zones between active blocks. The difference is not occasional, but reflects the nature of intraplate movement and the characteristics of strong seismic activity and is the powerful evidence for hypothesis of active blocks. | HAN Zhujun (韩竹军) XU Jie (徐 杰) RAN Yongkang (冉勇康) CHEN Lichun (陈立春) YANG Xiaoping (杨晓平) | 2003 | Science China Earth Sciences2003,46,z2: | 6
Recurrence characteristics of late-quaternary strong earthquakes on the major active faults along the northern border of Ordos block显示文摘Through study on trenches, analysis of recurrence characteristics and recurrence interval cluster/gap of strong earthquakes along the major active faults on the northern border of Ordos block, we found 62 paleoearthquakes that occurred in the late Quaternary, including 33 earthquakes occurring in the Holocene. The recurrence characteristics of the paleoearthquakes are different at three levels, segments, faults, and fault zones. The strong seismic sequence on the independent segments is mostly characterized by long- and short-interval recurrences, while that on the faults and in fault zone is characterized clearly by random and cluster recurrences. Results of the moving window test indicate that the probabilities of 'temporal cluster or gap', caused by random coincidence as opposed to intersegment contagion, are 64% and 70% for the Serteng piedmont fault and for the south-border fault of Wula Mountains, respectively, no clear interaction among the segments of each fault; while the probability is 26.8% for the whole fault zone, suggesting a clear interaction among the faults of this fault zone. These recurrence characteristics may imply an effect of the entire block motion on the recurrence of strong earthquakes. Moreover, the elapsed time for the Wujumeng Pass-Dongfeng Village segment of Serteng piedmont fault and the Tuzuo Banner-Wusutu and the Hohhot segments of Daqingshan piedmont fault has exceeded the average recurrence interval, hence these three segments may be the possible places for future strong earthquakes. | RAN Yongkang (冉勇康) CHEN Lichun (陈立春) YANG Xiaoping (杨晓平) HAN Zhujun (韩竹军) | 2003 | Science China Earth Sciences2003,46,z2: | 6
Paleoseismic ruptures and evolution of a small triangular pull-apart basin on the Zemuhe fault显示文摘Trenching is a primary technique on paleoseismology to reveal evidence of surface deformation produced by large earthquakes.A good trenching site requires completeness of geologic recording on paleoseismic events and corresponding reliable dating from radiocarbon samples.Based on three-dimension trenching,we show a structure of a small triangular pull-apart basin at the Daqingliangzi section on the Zemuhe fault, then explore interrelation between paleoseismic surface rupturing and evolution of the pull-apart basin, and give a corresponding identification model.Sedimentary boundary of the pull-apart basin is tightly bounded by two branch faults, which produced multiple paleoseismic events with deformation of some large fissures in sequence.Strata are thinner at north of the pull-apart basin, however thicker at south. These above characteristics show that evolution of the pull-apart basin is a continuous sedimentation process accompanying extensional deformation produced by multiple paleoseismic events.Small pull-apart basins are favorable sites for trenching and paleoseismic study on active strike-slip faults. | WANG Hu RAN YongKang LI YanBao CHEN LiChun | 2013 | Science China Earth Sciences2013,56,3: | 4
