Inhibitory effects of chitosan on superoxide anion radicals and lipid free radicals显示文摘With the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, the inhibitory effects of chitosan on superoxide anion radicals and linoleic acid lipid radicals were found. The inhibitory ratio E for these two kinds of radicals is in proportion to the concentration of chitosan. It was also observed that E for linoleic acid lipid radicals increased with the increase of the degree of deacetylation and decreased with the increase of the molecular weight of chitosan.Wenjun Li Xuan Jiang Peihua Xue Shiming Chen 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,11:9
Feature analysis of LIDAR waveforms from forest canopies显示文摘Airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) can detect the three-dimensional structure of forest canopies by transmitting laser pulses and receiving returned waveforms which contain backscatter from branches and leaves at different heights. We established a solid scatterer model to explain the widened durations found in analyzing the relationship between laser pulses and forest canopies, and obtained the corresponding rule between laser pulse duration and scatterer depth.Based on returned waveform characteristics, scatterers were classified into three types:simple, solid and complex. We developed single-peak derivative and multiple-peak derivative analysis methods to retrieve waveform features and discriminate between scatterer types.Solid scatterer simulations showed that the returned waveforms were widened as scatterer depth increased, and as space between sub-scatterers increased the returned waveforms developed two peaks which subsequently developed into two separate sub-waveforms.There were slight differences between the durations of simulated and measured waveforms.LIDAR waveform data are able to describe the backscatter characteristics of forest canopies, and have potential to improve the estimation accuracy of forest parameters.LIU QingWang LI ZengYuan CHEN ErXue PANG Yong LI ShiMing TIAN Xin 2011Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,8:6
Anti-inflammatory effects of characterized orange peel extracts enriched with bioactive polymethoxyflavones显示文摘In view of the potential of polymethoxyflavones(PMFs)and hydroxylated PMFs(OH-PMFs)as bioactives against inflammation,we prepared six different orange peel extracts(OPEs).The major compounds of these extracts were characterized and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Effects on inflammation were analyzed by nutrigenomics using a human cell-based TPA-induced monocyte–macrophage differentiation model employing U-937 cells and inflammatory surrogate genes.Dose response and kinetics analysis of OPEs with different chemical profiles revealed less cytotoxic effects of PMFs as compared to OH-PMFs as demonstrated by the MTT-method.Noteworthy,a comparison of two PMF members such as 3,5,6,7,3,4-hexamethoxyflavone(HexaMF)and 3,5,6,7,8,3,4-heptamethoxyflavone(HeptaMF)exhibited less cytotoxic effects of HeptaMF as compared to HexaMF.A specific OPE enriched with HeptaMF,PMFs and OH-PMFs at low concentrations(10g/mL)significantly down-regulated the expression of a panel of genes involved in inflammatory response, including COX-2,TNF-α,ICAM-1,NFκB,IL-1β,IL-6,and IL-8 with an inflammatory index of−0.55.The strong anti-inflammatory effects were then validated in a mouse carrageenan-induced paw edema model.Oral intake of OPE reduced paw edema significantly in a dose-dependent manner.Importantly,a dosage of 250 mg/kg gave an anti-inflammatory effect comparable to ibuprofen.A preliminary clinical study showed that OPE was well tolerated showing no adverse side effects. In summary, enrichment of phyto extracts such as OPEs with specific polymethoxyflavones as anti-inflammatory bioactives is a promising strategy to find naturally derived extracts that are effective against diseases associated with inflammation.©2014 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.Alexander Gosslau Kuang Yu Chen Chi-Tang Ho Shiming Li 2014Food Science and Human Wellness2014,3,1:5
Selective adsorption of silver ions from aqueous solution using polystyrene-supported trimercaptotriazine resin显示文摘Trimercaptotriazine-functionalized polystyrene chelating resin was prepared and employed for the adsorption of Ag(I)from aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized according to the following techniques:Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller method. The effects of initial Ag(I)concentration, contact time, solution pH and coexisting ions on the adsorption capacity of Ag(I)were systematically investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ag(I)was up to 187.1 mg/g resin at pH 0.0 and room temperature. The kinetic experiments indicated that the adsorption rate of Ag(I)onto the chelating resin was quite fast in the first 60 min and reached adsorption equilibrium after 360min.The adsorption process can be well described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model and the equilibrium adsorption isotherm was closely fitted by the Langmuir model. Moreover, the chelating resin could selectively adsorb more Ag(I)ions than other heavy metal ions including:Cu(II),Zn(II),Ni(II),Pb(II)and Cr(III)during competitive adsorption in the binary metal species systems, which indicated that it was a highly selective adsorbent of Ag(I)from aqueous solution.Shiming Wang Hongling Li Xiaoya Chen Min Yang Yanxing Qi 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,12:4
Investigation of potential interferences on the measurement of dissolved reactive phosphate using zirconium oxide-based DGT technique显示文摘A diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique based on hydrous zirconium oxide (Zr-oxide) has been recently developed for the measurement of dissolved reactive phosphate (DRP). In this study, the detailed performance of the DGT technique is reported. Spiking experiments revealed that several orthophosphate monoester compounds contributed to the Zr-oxide DGT measurements of DRP. However, such a phenomenon is unlikely to occur during field conditions due to the low concentration of organic P in typical natural waters. The presence of Cl- (up to 106 g/L), SO42- (up to 16 g/L), HCO3- (up to 817 g/L), and AsO2- and AsO 3 4 (both up to 1 mg As/L) in solutions had negligible effects on the measurement of DRP. The threshold concentrations of Cl-, SO42- and HCO3- have been increased from previous reports for the measurements of DRP using other adsorbent-based DGT techniques. The capacity for DGT measurements of DRP decreased with increasing solution pH (4.2-9.2). The lowest capacity (95 μg P/m2 at pH 9.2) was still greater than that of other DGT techniques that are usually used for the measurement of DRP (2-12 μg P/cm2 ). The Zr-oxide binding gel could be stored for up to 2 years without any aging effect. This period of validity was considerably longer than the ferrihydrite binding gel that is commonly used in present DGT devices (6 months). The field application revealed that the concentrations of DRP measured in three fresh water samples using the Zr-oxide DGT technique were in agreement with those of the traditional colorimetric method.Qin Sun Yifei Chen Di Xu Yan Wang Shiming Ding 2013Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,8:3
Prognostic potential of an immune score based on the density of CD8+ T cells, CD20+ B cells, and CD33+/p-STAT1+ double-positive cells and HMGB1 expression within cancer nests in stage ⅢA gastric cancer patients显示文摘Objective: There is heterogeneity in the prognosis of gastric cancers staged according to the tumornodes-metastasis(TNM) system. This study evaluated the prognostic potential of an immune score system to supplement the TNM staging system. Methods: An immunohistochemical analysis was conducted to assess the density of T cells, B cells, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs) in cancer tissues from 100 stage ⅢA gastric cancer patients; the expression of the high-mobility group protein B1(HMGB1) was also evaluated in cancer cells. The relationship between the overall survival(OS), disease-free survival(DFS), and immunological parameters was analyzed. Results: An immune score system was compiled based on the prognostic role of the density of T cells, B cells, MDSCs, and the expression of HMGB1 in cancer tissues. The median 5-year survival of this group of patient was 32%.However, the 5-year survival rates of 80.0%, 51.7%, 0%, 5.8%, and 0% varied among the patients with an immune score of 4 to those with an immune score of 0 based on the immune score system, respectively.Similarly, differences in DFS rates were observed among the immune score subgroups. Conclusions: An immune score system could effectively identify the prognostic heterogeneity within stage ⅢA gastric cancer patients, implying that this immune score system may potentially supplement the TNM staging system, and help in identifying a more homogeneous group of patients who on the basis of prognosis can undergo adjuvant therapy.Jun Dong Jiao Li Shiming Liu Xingyu Feng Shi Chen Zhiwei Zhou Yingbo Chen Xiaoshi Zhang 2016Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2016,28,5:3
Loss of scleraxis leads to distinct reduction of mineralized intermuscular bone in zebrafish显示文摘Intermuscular bones(IBs)are ossified from tendons and only occur in lower teleosts.Positive association between the regulation of scleraxis gene(scx)and tendon development gave us reasons to speculate that the scx gene may play a potential role in regulating the development of IBs.A phylogenetic analysis conducted for this study revealed potential functional differentiation between two scx orthologues, scxa and scxb. The scxa^(-/-) and scxb^(-/-) zebrafish were generated through CRISPR-Cas9 technology to study the role of scx in the IB and rib development. The results showed a significant reduction of the number of IBs in adult scxa-1^(-/-) zebrafish, with almost 70%reduction(15-25 IBs)compared to the wild type scxa-1^(+/+)zebrafish(76-80 IBs).In the scxa-1^(+/+)adults,IBs were observed in both dorsal and tail segments;however,in scxa-1^(-/-)fish IBs were observed only in the tail segment(none in the dorsal segment).Although scxa-1^(-/-) zebrafish had rib defects, the mutants were viable and fertile as adult fish. The scxb^(-/-) zebrafish had the same number of IBs and same skeletal phenotype as the wild-type fish. This suggests that only scxa has a crucial role in the IB development, and confirms functional differentiation of scx orthologues. To further clarify the molecular mechanism by which scxa affects the IB development,we conducted comparative transcriptome analysis of dorsal tissue samples of scxa-1^(+/+)(with IBs)and scxa-1^(-/-) (without IBs),and further verified the expression of key genes via qPCR.This is the first study to identify a gene that controls the amount of IBs in fish, and it provides a new sight into the effects of scxa on the molecular mechanism of IB development in fish.Chunhong Nie Shiming Wan Yulong Chen Dejie Zhu Xudong Wang Xiaoru Dong Ze-Xia Gao 2021Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,2:3

Advanced Noncarbon Materials as Catalyst Supports and Non‑noble Electrocatalysts for Fuel Cells and Metal–Air Batteries显示文摘Electrochemical energy systems such as fuel cells and metal–air batteries can be used as clean power sources in the field of electric transportation and possess great potential in the reduction of various energy and environmental issues. In these systems, the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)at the cathode is the rate-determining factor for overall system performance, and up to now, platinum group metals supported on carbon materials, especially Pt,remain the highest performing and the most practical ORR electrocatalysts. However, corresponding carbonaceous catalyst supports are extremely susceptible to corrosion under electrochemical operation, and therefore, the extensive exploration of alternative stable materials for ORR electrocatalysts with both high electrochemical stability and catalytic performance is essential. Here, noncarbon materials with high corrosion resistance have been explored to substitute traditional carbon supports or even act directly as low-cost non-noble metal electrocatalysts, and based on this, this review will present a comprehensive overview and deep analysis of the recent progress in noncarbon materials, including metals, oxides, nitrides, carbides, sulfides, and so on.Overall, general attributes associated with noncarbon materials include high corrosion resistance, strong metal–support interaction, and impressive porous structure retention. However, major drawbacks include low electrical conductivity, insufficient chemical stability in acidic or alkaline media, and poor electrochemical stability at ORR electrode potentials. To overcome these challenges, this review will also summarize efficient strategies such as combining with highly conductive materials, introducing dopants and forming vacancies to result in promising electrocatalytic ORR performances. Finally, this review will propose possible research directions to facilitate future research and development toward the practical application of noncarbon-based ORR electrocatalysts.Shiming Zhang Menghui Chen Xiao Zhao Jialin Cai Wei Yan Joey Chung Yen Shengli Chen Yan Yu Jiujun Zhang 2021Electrochemical Energy Reviews2021,4,2:2
Diet and medical foods in Parkinson’s disease显示文摘Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motorsigns, which begins long before the diagnosis can be made. Pharmacotherapy with dopaminergic drugsis the mainstay of PD therapy. There is no currently available cure or disease-modifying treatment. Dietand various foods have been proposed as possible risk factors for PD. Nutritional supplementation withomega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, B vitamins, and coenzyme Q may have potential in the management ofPD. In addition, several strategies could possibly lead to the development of medical foods in PD. Forexample, ketogenic diets may have effects complementary to pharmacotherapy. Gut microbial dysbiosisand altered microbial metabolites found in PD may lead to chronic low-grade inflammation in gut andbrain. Interventions targeting gut microbiota, such as the supplementation of probiotics, may providenovel approaches to PD in regard to both symptomatic treatment and disease modification. High qualityrandomized controlled trials need to be conducted in order to evaluate whether these food-basedstrategies have symptomatic efficacy or the potential to delay the progression of PD.Klaus W.Lange Yukiko Nakamura Ning Chen Jianjun Guo Shigehiko Kanaya Katharina M.Lange Shiming Li 2019Food Science and Human Wellness2019,8,2:2
Enhanced performance in the direct electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia from N2 and H2O by an in-situ electrochemical activation of CNT-supported iron oxide nanoparticles显示文摘The direct electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia from N2 and H2O by using renewable energy sources and ambient pressure/temperature operations is a breakthrough technology, which can reduce by over 90%the greenhouse gas emissions of this chemical and energy storage process. We report here an in-situ electrochemical activation method to prepare Fe2O3-CNT(iron oxide on carbon nanotubes)electrocatalysts for the direct ammonia synthesis from N2 and H2O.The in-situ electrochemical activation leads to a large increase of the ammonia formation rate and Faradaic efficiency which reach the surprising high values of 41.6μg mgcat^−1 h^−1 and 17%,respectively,for an in-situ activation of 3 h,among the highest values reported so far for non-precious metal catalysts that use a continuous-flow polymer-electrolytemembrane cell and gas-phase operations for the ammonia synthesis hemicell. The electrocatalyst was stable at least 12 h at the working conditions.Tests by switching N2 to Ar evidence that ammonia was formed from the gas-phase nitrogen. The analysis of the changes of reactivity and of the electrocatalyst characteristics as a function of the time of activation indicates a linear relationship between the ammonia formation rate and a specific XPS(X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy)oxygen signal related to O2−in iron-oxide species. This results together with characterization data by TEM and XRD suggest that the iron species active in the direct and selective synthesis of ammonia is a maghemite-type iron oxide, and this transformation from the initial hematite is responsible for the in-situ enhancement of 3-4 times of the TOF(turnover frequency)and NH3 Faradaic efficiency. This transformation is likely related to the stabilization of the maghemite species at CNT defect sites, although for longer times of preactivation a sintering occurs with a loss of performances.Shiming Chen Siglinda Perathoner Claudio Ampelli Hua Wei Salvatore Abate Bingsen Zhang Gabriele Centi 2020Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,10:2
Insights Into the Interfacial Degradation of High-Voltage All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries显示文摘Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)-based solid polymer electrolyte(SPE)is considered as a promising solid-state electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries(ASSLBs).Nevertheless, the poor interfacial stability with high-voltage cathode materials(e.g.,LiCoO_(2))restricts its application in high energy density solid-state batteries.Herein,high-voltage stable Li_(3)AlF_(6) protective layer is coated on the surface of LiCoO_(2) particle to improve the performance and investigate the failure mechanism of PEO-based ASSLBs.The phase transition unveils that chemical redox reaction occurs between the highly reactive LiCoO_(2) surface and PEO-based SPE,resulting in structure collapse of LiCoO_(2),hence the poor cycle performance of PEO-based ASSLBs with LiCoO_(2) at charging voltage of 4.2 V vs Li/Li+.By sharp contrast,no obvious structure change can be found at the surface of Li_(3)AlF_(6)-coated LiCoO_(2),and the original layered phase was well retained. When the charging voltage reaches up to 4.5 V vs Li/Li+,the intensive electrochemical decomposition of PEO-based SPE occurs, leading to the constant increase of cell impedance and directly causing the poor performance. This work not only provides important supplement to the failure mechanism of PEO-based batter-ies with LiCoO_(2),but also presents a universal strategy to retain structure stability of cathode-electrolyte interface in high-voltage ASSLBs.Jiawen Li Yuchen Ji Haoran Song Shiming Chen Shouxiang Ding Bingkai Zhang Luyi Yang Yongli Song Feng Pan 2022Nano-Micro Letters2022,14,12:2
Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions of COVID-19 patients in China:A multicenter study显示文摘Introduction:With the spread of the epidemic worldwide,an increasing number of doctors abroad have observed the following atypical symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19):olfactory or taste disorders. Therefore, clarifying the incidence and clinical characteristics of olfactory and taste disorders in Chinese COVID-19 patients is of great significance and urgency.Materials and Methods:A retrospective study was conducted, which included 229 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 confirmed patients, through face-to-face interviews and telephone follow-up.Following the completion of questionnaires, the patients participating in the study, were categorized according to the degree of olfactory and taste disorders experienced, and the proportion of each clinical type of patient with olfactory and taste disorders and the time when symptoms appeared were recorded. Results:Among the 229 patients,31(13.54%)had olfactory dysfunction, and 44(19.21%)had gustatory dysfunction. For the patients with olfactory dysfunction,6(19.35%)developed severe disease and became critically ill.Olfactory dysfunction appeared before the other symptoms in 21.43%of cases. The proportion of females with olfactory and gustatory dysfunction was higher than that of males(P<0.001).Conclusions:The incidence of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction was much lower than that reported abroad;the prognosis of patients with olfactory dysfunction is relatively favorable;olfactory and gustatory dysfunction can be used as a sign for early screening;females are more prone to olfactory and gustatory dysfunction.Jianhui Li Yi Sun Enqiang Qin Hu Yuan Mingbo Liu Wenqi Yi Zhu Chen Chengcheng Huang Fengjie Zhou Ruiyao Chen Leibo Zhang Ning Yu Qiong Liu Xuejun Zhou Jingjing He Boyu Li Fusheng Wang Changliang Yang Shiming Yang 2022World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2022,8,4:2

RECQL4 regulates DNA damage response and redox homeostasis in esophageal cancer显示文摘Objective:RECQL4(a member of the RECQ helicase family)upregulation has been reported to be associated with tumor progression in several malignancies. However, whether RECQL4 sustains esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)has not been elucidated. In this study,we determined the functional role for RECQL4 in ESCC progression.Methods:RECQL4 expression in clinical samples of ESCC was examined by immunohistochemistry.Cell proliferation, cellular senescence, the epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT),DNA damage, and reactive oxygen species in ESCC cell lines with RECQL4 depletion or overexpression were analyzed. The levels of proteins involved in the DNA damage response(DDR),cell cycle progression, survival, and the EMT were determined by Western blot analyses.Results:RECQL4 was highly expressed in tumor tissues when compared to adjacent non-tumor tissues in ESCC(P<0.001)and positively correlated with poor differentiation(P=0.011),enhanced invasion(P=0.033),and metastasis(P=0.048).RECQL4 was positively associated with proliferation and migration in ESCC cells.Depletion of RECQL4 also inhibited growth of tumor xenografts in vivo.RECQL4 depletion induced G0/G1 phase arrest and cellular senescence.Importantly, the levels of DNA damage and reactive oxygen species were increased when RECQL4 was depleted.DDR,as measured by the activation of ATM,ATR,CHK1,and CHK2,was impaired.RECQL4 was also shown to promote the activation of AKT,ERK,and NF-k B in ESCC cells. Conclusions:The results indicated that RECQL4 was highly expressed in ESCC and played critical roles in the regulation of DDR,redox homeostasis, and cell survival.Guosheng Lyu Peng Su Xiaohe Hao Shiming Chen Shuai Ren Zixiao Zhao Yaoqin Gong Qiao Liu Changshun Shao 2021Cancer Biology & Medicine2021,18,1:2
