| 2 | Low skeletal muscle mass is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Korean adults: the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey显示文摘BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) share similar pathophysiological mechanisms, and the relationship between sarcopenia and NAFLD has been recently investigated. The study investigated whether low skeletal muscle mass is differentially associated with NAFLD by gender in Korean adults.METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The skeletal muscle index(SMI) was obtained by the appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by the weight. NAFLD was defined as a fatty liver index(FLI) ≥60 in the absence of other chronic liver disease.RESULTS: Among the included subjects, 18.3%(SE: 1.4%) in men and 7.0%(SE: 0.7%) in women were classified as having FLI-defined NAFLD. Most of the risk factors for FLI-defined NAFLD showed a significant negative correlation with the SMI in both genders. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that low SMI was associated with FLI-defined NAFLD, independent of other metabolic and lifestyle parameters in both genders [males: odds ratio(OR)=1.35; 95% confidence interval(CI): 1.17-1.54; females: OR=1.36; 95% CI: 1.18-1.55]. The magnitude of the association between FLI-defined NAFLD and low SMI was higher in middle aged to elderly males(OR=1.50; 95% CI: 1.22-1.84) than in males less than 45 years of age(OR=1.25; 95% CI: 1.02-1.52) and in premenopausal females(OR=1.50; 95% CI: 1.12-2.03) than in postmenopausal females(OR=1.36; 95% CI: 1.20-1.54).CONCLUSIONS: Low SMI is associated with the risk of FLIdefined NAFLD independent of other well-known metabolic risk factors in both genders. This association may differ according to age group or menopausal status. | 4 | Links among Slope Morphology, Canyon Types and Tectonics on Passive and Active Margins in the Northernmost South China Sea显示文摘We examine slope profile types and variations in slope gradient and slope relief with depth for both passive and active margins in the northern most South China Sea. The passive South China margin is characterized by an exponential slope profile, mainly associated with clustered slope-confined canyons. The active Taiwan margin shows a linear-like shape with great variations along the lower slope. Fewer canyons occur on the Taiwan margin, and hence the influence of canyon incision on slope morphology is relatively less significant. Quantitative analyses of slope curvature, slope gradi-ent and square root of relief variance are useful statistical parameters to explain characteristics and variability of morphology of the slope of the South China margin, but not for the Kaoping slope on the Taiwan side. | 5 | In vivo anti-tumor activity of murine hematopoietic stem cells expressing a p185HER2-specific chimeric T-cell receptor gene显示文摘We have confirmed efficient anti-tumor activities of the peripheral lymphocytes transduced with a p185HER2-specific chimeric T-cell receptor gene both in murine and in human in our previous studies. To further test the feasibility of chimeric T-cell receptor in a bone marrow transplantation model, we first, made two murine tumor cell lines: MT901 and MCA-205, to express human p185HER2 by retroviral gene transduction. Murine bone marrow cells were retrovirally transduced to express the chimeric T-cell receptor and gene-modified bone marrow cells were transplanted into lethally irradiated mouse. Six months post transplantation, p185HER2-positive tumor cells:MT-901/HER2 or MCA-205/ HER2 was subcutaneously or intravenously injected to make mouse models simulating primary breast cancer or pulmonary metastasis. The in vivo anti-tumor effects were monitored by the size of the subcutaneous tumor or counting the tumor nodules in the lungs after India ink staining. The size of the subcutaneous tumor was significantly inhibited and the number of pulmonary nodules were significantly decreased in mouse recipients transplanted with chimeric T-cell receptor modified bone marrow cells compared with the control group. | 7 | Medical training fails to prepare providers to care for patients with chronic hepatitis B infection显示文摘AIM: To investigate physicians' knowledge including chronic hepatitis B(CHB) diagnosis, screening, and management in various stages of their training.METHODS: A voluntary 20-question survey was administered in Santa Clara County, CA where Asian and Pacific Islanders(API) account for a third of the population. Among the 219 physician participants,there were 63 interns, 60 second-year residents, 26 chief residents and 70 attending physicians. The survey asked questions regarding respondents' demographics,general hepatitis B virus knowledge questions(i.e.,transmission, prevalence, diagnostic testing, prevention,and treatment options), as well as, self-reported practice behavior and confidence in knowledge.RESULTS: Knowledge about screening and managing patients with CHB was poor: only 24% identified the correct tests to screen for CHB, 13% knew the next steps for patients testing positive for CHB, 18% knew the high prevalence rate among API, and 31% knew how to screen for liver cancer.
