Herbal compatibility of Traditional Chinese Medical formulas for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome显示文摘OBJECTIVE:Because herbal compatibility is one of the most important reasons why Traditional Chinese Medcine(TCM) formulas are effective for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS),our study aimed to determine the compatibility of herbs based on published AIDS clinical research in Chinese periodicals. To achieve this aim,we designed a new data-mining algorithm according to TCM data characteristics.METHODS:We found 25 clinical AIDS studies, all using Chinese herbs for treatment,in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Database System, and information on diagnosis and treatment was extracted. To find out herbal compatibility, especially the formulae for herbal combinations,we proposed an improved association rule algorithm based on the frequency of combinations. In this algorithm, all the compatibility relationships were displayed in a tree structure,by which the relationship between formulas and their derivation could be clearly inferred.RESULTS:Data analysis showed that approximately 100 herbs have been used for treating AIDS.Based on the whole herb compatibility tree,we calculated a basic formula for AIDS:Huang Qi combined with Ren Shen,Fu Ling,Bai Zhu,Bai Zhu,Dang Gui,and Bai Shao. This formula, deriving from most of clinical prescriptions, and was chosed by most of clinicians for AIDS treatment. From data mining we found that Qi replenishment and detoxification were the main treatment principles, which coincided with the AIDS pathological mechanism in which immune function is destroyed by human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).CONCLUSIONS:Our data-mining results suggest that the core TCM treatment of AIDS is replenishing Qi and detoxification,by which AIDS patients' immune system may be enhanced.Compatibility of Huang Qi with some frequently-used herbs have shown real efficacy in clinical practice, which warrants pharmacological research in the future. | Meng Cui Jinghua Li Haiyan Li Chunxin Song | 2012 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2012,32,3: | 5
Use of electrosense in the feeding behavior of sturgeons显示文摘The electro-receptive lateral line system appeared early in the evolutionary history of fish.Sturgeons, members of the primitive Chondrostei group, are known for their electroreceptors(ampullae of Lorenzini)on the head, which are thought to be sensitive to weak electric fields in aquatic environments and involved in feeding, mating and migration. Here,we report the results of a set of behavioral and electrophysiological experiments designed to determine the function and characteristics of the electrosense in cultured sturgeons. The results showed Sibe-rian sturgeon(Acipenser baerii Brandt,1869)feeding striking at bio-electric fields produced by living feed-fish enclosed in a gel chamber and at the corrosion field produced by metal rods. With an electric stimulus that mim-ics the bio-electric fields produced by living prey, the relative discharge rate of electrosensory neurons in the dorsal octavolateralis nucleus(DON)was modulated by and phase-locked to sinusoidal stimulus and some units showed selectivity for dipolar direction in white sturgeon(Acipenser transmontanus Richardson,1836).This is the first study to provide the empirical evidence correlating with electrosensory behaviors and electrophysiolog-ical responses in cultured sturgeons, and suggesting that electrosense does play an innate role in feeding behav-ior of sturgeon. We believe this will have important implications for protecting sturgeons in the wild. | Xuguang ZHANG Jiakun SONG Chunxin FAN Hongyi GUO Xiaojie WANG Horst BLECKMANN | 2012 | Integrative Zoology2012,7,1: | 2
Network pharmacology-based screening of the active ingredients and potential targets of the genus of Croton for application to lung cancer显示文摘Lung cancer has been the most common cancer in the world for several decades, and it was also the most common cause of death from cancer.Despite the several advances in the last few years into treatment of lung cancer, the survival remains extremely low. There is an urgent need to discover viable leads that can be developed into new clinically therapeutic drugs with good treatment effects. The analysis of current reported literatures suggest that natural products possess strong inhibitory efficacy against lung cancer. The plants of Croton genus belonging to Euphorbiaceae family, are widely used as herbal medicine in the folk.Which are reported to have abilities to treat several cancer cell lines especially lung cancer,a successive study was carried out to identify selective anticancer agents from these plants specie.Herein we employed a network pharmacological approach to understand its multi-therapeutics potentiality in Croton genus against lung cancer. In total, the database of the compound was established based on the methods of network pharmacology prediction and the compound-disease target network was constructed. We believed that our study would provide important clues for finding novel drug inhibitors for lung cancer. | Shaochun Shi Yeqing Du Chunxin Zou Qingbo Liu Shaojiang Song | 2019 | Asian Journal of Traditional Medicines2019,14,5: | 0
Functional C1q is present in the skin mucus of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii)显示文摘The skin mucus of fish acts as the first line of self-protection against pathogens in the aquatic environment and comprises a number of innate immune components. However, the presence of the critical classical complement component C1q,which links the innate and adaptive immune systems of mammalians, has not been explored in a primitive actinopterygian fish.In this study,we report that C1q is present in the skin mucus of the Siberian sturgeon(Acipenser baerii). The skin mucus was able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli. The bacteriostatic activity of the skin mucus was reduced by heating and by pre-incubation with EDTA or mouse anti-human C1q antibody. We also detected C1q protein in skin mucus using the western blot procedure and isolated a cDNA that encodes the Siberian sturgeon C1qC,which had 44.7–51.4%identity with C1qCs in teleosts and tetrapods.A phylogenetic analysis revealed that Siberian sturgeon C1qC lies at the root of the actinopterygian branch and is separate from the tetrapod branch. The C1qC transcript was expressed in many tissues as well as in skin. Our data indicate that C1q is present in the skin mucus of the Siberian sturgeon to protect against water-borne bacteria, and the C1qC found in the sturgeon may represent the primitive form of teleost and tetrapod C1qCs. | Chunxin FAN Jian WANG Xuguang ZHANG Jiakun SONG | 2015 | Integrative Zoology2015,10,1: | 0
Improved diagnosis of thyroid cancer aided with deep learning applied to sonographic text reports:a retrospective,multi-cohort,diagnostic study显示文摘Objective:Large volume radiological text data have been accumulated since the incorporation of electronic health record(EHR)systems in clinical practice. We aimed to determine whether deep natural language processing algorithms could aid radiologists in improving thyroid cancer diagnosis. Methods:Sonographic EHR data were obtained from the EHR database.Pathological reports were used as the gold standard for diagnosing thyroid cancer. We developed thyroid cancer diagnosis based on natural language processing(THCaDxNLP)to interpret unstructured sonographic text reports for thyroid cancer diagnosis. We used the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC)as the primary metric to measure the performance of the THCaDxNLP.We compared the performance of thyroid ultrasound radiologists aided with THCaDxNLP vs.those without THCaDxNLP using 5 independent test sets. Results:We obtained a total number of 788,129 sonographic radiological reports. The number of thyroid sonographic data points was 132,277,18,400 of which were thyroid cancer patients.Among the 5 test sets, the numbers of patients per set were 439,186,82,343,and 171.THCaDxNLP achieved high performance in identifying thyroid cancer patients(the AUROC ranged from 0.857–0.932).Thyroid ultrasound radiologists aided with THCaDxNLP achieved significantly higher performances than those without THCaDxNLP in terms of accuracy(93.8%vs.87.2%;one-sided t-test,adjusted P=0.003),precision(92.5%vs.86.0%;P=0.018),and F1 metric(94.2%vs.86.4%;P=0.007).Conclusions:THCaDxNLP achieved a high AUROC for the identification of thyroid cancer, and improved the accuracy, sensitivity, and precision of thyroid ultrasound radiologists. This warrants further investigation of THCaDxNLP in prospective clinical trials. | Qiang Zhang Sheng Zhang Jianxin Li Yi Pan Jing Zhao Yixing Feng Yanhui Zhao Xiaoqing Wang Zhiming Zheng Xiangming Yang Lixia Liu Chunxin Qin Ke Zhao Xiaonan Liu Caixia Li Liuyang Zhang Chunrui Yang Na Zhuo Hong Zhang Jie Liu Jinglei Gao Xiaoling Di Fanbo Meng Wei Ji Meng Yang Xiaojie Xin Xi Wei Rui Jin Lun Zhang Xudong Wang Fengju Song Xiangqian Zheng Ming Gao Kexin Chen Xiangchun Li | 2022 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2022,19,5: | 0
Bioinspired Scalable Total Synthesis of Opioids显示文摘As one of the largest and most representative families of natural medicines harvested from plants, the mass production of opioids legitimately occupies large, worldwide farmland cultivation of opium poppies, causing severe regulation limitations and supply uncertainty.Due to their complex structures, the chemical synthesis of opioids has been criticized as infeasible for large-scale production in view of lengthy synthetic steps and overall low efficiency. | Xiaohan Zhou Wenfei Li Ruijie Zhou Xiaoqing Wu Yuan Huang Wenlong Hou Chunxin Li Yifan Zhang Wei Nie Yu Wang Hao Song Xiao-Yu Liu Zhibing Zheng Fei Xie Song Li Wu Zhong Yong Qin | 2021 | CCS Chemistry2021,3,9: | 0
