| 1 | Uplift, climate and biotic changes at the Eocene-Oligocene transition in south-eastern Tibet显示文摘The uplift history of south-eastern Tibet is crucial to understanding processes driving the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas.Underpinning existing palaeoaltimetric studies has been regional mapping based in large part on biostratigraphy that assumes a Neogene modernization of the highly diverse,but threatened,Asian biota.Here,with new radiometric dating and newly collected plant-fossil archives,we quantify the surface height of part of the south-eastern margin of Tibet in the latest Eocene(~34 Ma)to be^3 km and rising,possibly attaining its present elevation(3.9 km)in the early Oligocene.We also find that the Eocene–Oligocene transition in south-eastern Tibet witnessed leaf-size diminution and a floral composition change from sub-tropical/warm temperate to cool temperate,likely reflective of both uplift and secular climate change,and that,by the latest Eocene,floral modernization on Tibet had already taken place,implying modernization was deeply rooted in the Palaeogene. | Tao Su Robert A. | 8 | Glycosylation-independent binding to extracellular domains 11-13 of mannose-6-phosphate/insulin-like growth factor-2 receptor mediates the effects of soluble CREG on the phenotypic proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells显示文摘Background The present study aimed to investigate the detailed mode and specific sites for their binding as well as the functional relevance of this binding in the phenotypic proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells(SMCs). Methods CREG knocked-down SMCs were employed to evaluate the biological activity of wtCREG and mCREG.Expressions of SMC differentiation markers SM myosin heavy chain(SM-MHC),SM-actin,heavy caldesmon and myocardin were determined by Western blotting using specific antibodies. Cellular growth of SMCs was assessed by bromide dewuridine (BrdU) incorporation and cell cycle analysis on fluorescence-activated cell sorting(FACS).A solid-phase binding assay was used to study the binding of CREG to extracellular domains of M6P/IGF2R.The cellular co-localization of the two recombinant CREGs with M6P/IGF2R was detected on SMC surface by immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence analysis.Results The molecular weight of wtCREG was around 30 kD while that of the mCREG was~25 kD.Treatment of wtCREG with PNGase F reduced its molecular weight from~30 kD to~25 kD,whereas PNGase F treatment had no effect on the molecular weight of mCREG.Both wtCREG and mCREG proteins enhanced SMC differentiation,inhibited BrdU incorporation,and arrested cell cycle progression when added to the culture medium.In CREG knocked-down SMCs,the amount of CREG detected by immunoblotting in M6P/IGF2R immunoprecipitates was significantly reduced when compared to normal cells.Both recombinant CREGs co-immunoprecipitated with M6P/IGF2R, although slightly reduced amount of the mutant CREG was detected in M6P/IGF2R immunoprecipitates.Immunostaining revealed that His-tagged CREGs co-localized with IGF2R on the cell surface in a glycosylation-independent manner.In vitro binding assay showed that CREGs bound to M6P/ IGF2R extracellular domains 7-10 and 11-13 in a glycosylation -dependent and -independent manner,respectively.Further blocking experiments using soluble M6P/IGF2R fragments and M6P/IGF2R neutralizing antibody indicated that the biological activities of recombinant CREGs in SMC growth and the up-regulation of SMC differentiation markers were all abolished by treatment with the M6P/IGF2R neutralizing antibody. | 9 | Design and baseline data of a populationbased metabonomics study of eye diseases in eastern China: the Yueqing Ocular Diseases Investigation显示文摘Background:China is undergoing a massive transition toward an urban and industrial economy.These changes will restructure the demographics and economy which will eventually influence the future patterns of disease.The risk factors of vision-impairing eye diseases remain ambiguous and poorly understood.Metabolomics is an ideal tool to understand and shed light on the ocular disease mechanisms for earlier treatment.This article aims to describe the design,methodology and baseline data of the Yueqing Ocular Diseases Investigation(YODI),a developed county population-based study to determine the prevalence and primary causes of visual impairment;also with metabonomics analysis we aimed to identify,predict and suggest some preventive biomarkers that cause blindness.Methods:A population-based,cross-sectional study.Randomized clustering sampling was used to identify adults aged 50 years and older in Xiangyang Town,Yueqing county-level City.The interviews covered demographic,behavioral,ocular risk factors and mental health state.The ocular examination included visual acuity,autorefraction,intraocular pressure,anterior and posterior segment examinations,fundus photography,retinal tomography and angiography,and visual field testing.Anthropometric measurements included height and weight,waist and hip circumference,blood pressure,pulse rate,electrocardiogram,and abdominal ultrasound scan.A venous blood sample was collected for laboratory tests and metabonomics studies.Results:Of the 5319 individuals recruited for the YODI,4769(89.7%)subjects were enrolled for analyses.The median age was 62.0 years,and 45.6%were male.The educational level of illiteracy or semi-illiteracy,primary,middle and high school or above was 29.8%,45.5%,20.1%,and 3.3%,respectively.Majority of the participants were female,younger,and less educated when compared with nonparticipants.The average body mass index and waist-hip ratios were 24.4±3.4 kg/m^(2) and 0.9±0.1 respectively.Blood sample collection reached a sample size of 1909(479 from subjects with selfreported diabetes and 1430 from one-third of the 4290 subjects without self-reported diabetes).Conclusions:The YODI provides population-based data with a high response rate(89.7%)on the prevalence and primary causes of major vision-impairing eye diseases in developed county areas in eastern China.Metabonomics analysis from YODI will provide further association of metabolic characteristics with the visual impairment eye diseases.The risk prediction model could be created and has the potential to be generalized to developed eastern areas in China for prevention. | Yuxuan Deng Yuanbo Liang Sigeng Lin Liang Wen Jin Li Yue Zhou Meixiao Shen Jingwei Zheng Kemi Feng Yanting Sun Kwapong Willaim Robert Jia Qu Fan Lu | 2020 | Eye and Vision2020,7,1: | 4 |

To perform pattern recognition and track fitting, artificial retina or Hough transformation algorithms have been introduced to the field typically implemented on state-of-the-art field programmable gate array(FPGA) devices. In this paper, we report on two FPGA implementations of the retina algorithm: one using a mixed Floating-Point core and the other using Fixed-Point and Look-Up Table, and detailed measurements of the retina performance are investigated and compared. | 13 | Earth orientation parameters from VLBI determined with a Kalman filter显示文摘This paper introduces the reader to our Kalman filter developed for geodetic VLBI(very long baseline interferometry) data analysis. The focus lies on the EOP(Earth Orientation Parameter) determination based on the Continuous VLBI Campaign 2014(CONT14) data, but also earlier CONT campaigns are analyzed. For validation and comparison purposes we use EOP determined with the classical LSM(least squares method) estimated from the same VLBI data set as the Kalman solution with a daily resolution. To gain higher resolved EOP from LSM we run solutions which yield hourly estimates for polar motion and dUTl = Universal Time(UT1)-Coordinated Universal Time(UTC). As an external validation data set we use a GPS(Global Positioning System) solution providing hourly polar motion results.Further, we describe our approach for determining the noise driving the Kalman filter. It has to be chosen carefully, since it can lead to a significant degradation of the results. We illustrate this issue in context with the de-correlation of polar motion and nutation.Finally, we find that the agreement with respect to GPS can be improved by up to 50% using our filter compared to the LSM approach, reaching a similar precision than the GPS solution. | 14 | Contribution of genotype and ethnicity to bone mineral density variation in Caucasians and Chinese: a test for five candidate genes for bone mass显示文摘Background Ethnicity is shown to be one of important factors affacting bone mineral density (BMD). The present study was performed to compare the association of six markers for five candidate genes with BMD variation in two populations of different ethnicity, Caucasian and Chinese, and the contribution of genotype and ethnicity to this variation in the populations.Methods The studied restriction fragment length polymorphisms were Bsa H Ⅰ of the calcium-sensing receptor gene, Sac Ⅰ of the α2HS-glycoprotein (AHSG) gene, Pvu Ⅱ and Xba Ⅰ of the oestrogen receptor α gene, Apa Ⅰ of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and BstB Ⅰ of the parathyroid hormone gene. The association of these markers with BMD was analysed by one-way and two-way ANOVA with adjustment for covariates. Results Two polymorphisms, AHSG- Sac Ⅰ and VDR- Apa Ⅰ, showed no association with BMD, while the others were associated with BMD variation at some skeletal sites in either males or females. The polymorphisms indicated clear distinctions between the associations depending on ethnicity, gender and skeletal site. Similar patterns were observed in their contribution to the total population BMD variation. Ethnicity appears to have a larger effect on the total population BMD variation in females than in males. It may account, on the average, for about 2% total population BMD variation at the spine of females and about 1% at the hip of males and females. Conclusion The results of the present study suggest that significant interethnic differentiation at some loci may contribute to the significant interethnic difference in BMD.
