1ABNORMAL FLOWER AND GRAIN 1 encodes OsMADS6 and determines palea identity and affects rice grain yield and quality显示文摘The palea and lemma are floral organ structures unique to grasses;these structures form the hull and directly affect grain size and quality. However, the molecular mechanisms controlling the development of the hull are not well understood. In this study, we characterized the rice(Oryza sativa) abnormal flower and grain1(afg1) mutant, a new allele of OsMADS6. Similar to previously characterized osmads6 alleles, in the afg1 floret, the palea lost its marginal region and acquired the lemma identity. However, in contrast to other osmads6 alleles, the afg1 mutant showed altered grain size and grain quality, with decreased total starch and amylose contents, and increased protein and soluble sugar contents. The analysis of transcriptional activity suggested that AFG1 is a transcriptional activator and may affect grain size by regulating the expression levels of several genes related to cell expansion and proliferation in the afg1 mutant. 2Conspicuous cruciform silk decorations deflect avian predator attacks显示文摘Although camouflage as an effective antipredator defense strategy is widespread across animals,highly conspicuous color patterning is not uncommon either.Many orb-web spiders adorn their webs with extra bright white silk.These conspicuous decorations are hypothesized to deter predators by warning the presence of sticky webs,camouflaging spiders,acting as a decoy,or intimidating predators by their apparent size.The decorations may also deflect predator attacks from spiders.However,empirical evidence for this deflection function remains limited.Here,we tested this hypothesis using the X-shaped silk cruciform decorations built by females of Argiope minuta.We employed visual modeling to quantify the conspicuousness of spiders and decorations from a perspective of avian predators.Then,we determined actual predation risk on spiders using naïve chicks as predators.Spider bodies and decorations were conspicuous against natural backgrounds to the avian visual systems.Chicks attacked the spider main bodies significantly less frequently on the decorated webs than on the undecorated webs,thus reducing predation risk.When both spiders and decorations were present,chicks also attacked the spider main bodies and their legs or decorations,and not randomly:they attacked the legs or decorations sooner and more frequently than they attacked the main bodies,independent of the ratio of the surface area between the decoration and spider size.Despite the increase in detectability,incorporating a conspicuous cruciform decoration to the web effectively defends the spider by diverting the attack toward the decoration or leg,but not by camouflaging or intimidating,thus,supporting the deflection hypothesis.Bingjun WANG Long YU Nina MA Zengtao ZHANG Deyong GONG Rui LIU Daiqin LI Shichang ZHANG 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,5:1

4Teleseismic P-Wave Tomography of the New Guinea-Solomon Arc System显示文摘A P-wave tomographic traveltime inversion was applied to obtain a new model of seismic velocity anomalies beneath the New Guinea-Solomon arc system(PN-SL).The P-wave traveltime data,obtained from the revised International Seismological Center catalog,were recorded by 82 seismic stations in the PN-SL.Under the constraints of the epicenter distance,magnitude,and the number of stations recorded,15009 effective P-wave traveltime data were selected from 2011 teleseismic events.The obtained model showed that the Solomon Sea Plate subducted beneath the New Britain Island along the New Britain Trench at an angle of>70°and that the slab can be traced down to a depth of approximately 800 km.Conversely,we cannot observe a high-velocity anomaly exhibited by the subducted Solomon Sea Plate in the deep mantle at the Trobriand Trench,and the slab stopped at a depth of<200 km.The double subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate strongly modified the subduction patterns of the early subducted Pacific and Australian plates in the mantle along the West Melanesian Trench and the Pocklington Trough,respectively.In addition,the subducted Solomon Sea Plate induced the melting of the upper mantle to form a low-velocity anomaly,which provided the deep dynamic source for the expansion of the Bismarck Sea.Based on the joint consideration of the tomography results and a petrological analysis,the low-velocity anomalies beneath the Solomon Sea and Woodlark Basin are closely related to the early subduction of the Pacific and Australian Plates,respectively.FENG Bing ZHANG Hao GONG Wei XING Junhui LI Deyong XU Chong AN Long 2022Journal of Ocean University of China2022,21,3:0
5Active Depths of Main Faults in the Ying-Qiong Basin Investigated by Multi-Scale Wavelet Decomposition of Bouguer Gravity Anomalies and Power Spectral Methods显示文摘The Ying-Qiong Basin is located on the northwestern margin of the South China Sea and at the junction of the South China Block and the Indochina Block.It is characterized by complex geological structures.The existing seismic data in the study area is sparse due to the lack of earthquake activities.Because of the limited source energy and poor coverage of seismic data,the knowledge of deep structures in the area,including the spatial distribution of deep faults,is incomplete.Contrarily,satellite gravity data cover the entire study area and can reveal the spatial distribution of faults.Based on the wavelet multi-scale decomposition method,the Bouguer gravity field in the Ying-Qiong Basin was decomposed and reconstructed to obtain the detailed images of the first-to sixth-order gravitational fields.By incorporating the known geological features,the gravitational field responses of the main faults in the Ying-Qiong Basin were identified in the detailed fields,and the power spectrum analysis yielded the depths of 1.4,8,15,26.5,and 39 km for the average burial depths of the bottom surfaces from the first-to fifth-order detailed fields,respectively.The four main faults in the Yinggehai Basin all have a large active depth range:fault A(No.1)is between 5 and 39 km,fault B is between 26.5 and 39 km,and faults C and D are between 15 and 39 km.However,the depth of active faults in the Qiongdongnan Basin is relatively shallow,mainly between 8 and 26.5 km.AN Long YU Chong GONG Wei LI Deyong XING Junhui XU Chong ZHANG Hao 2022Journal of Ocean University of China2022,21,5:0
6Traumatic mating causes strict monandry in a wolf spider显示文摘DEAR EDITOR,We identified strict monandry in a wandering wolf spider species(Pardosa pseudoannulata) and revealed the underlying mechanisms of this mating structure. Evidence indicated that males damaged the inner walls of the female genital tract with the sharp part of their intromittent organ during insemination.
