6PAM: an efficient power-aware multilevel cache policy to reduce energy consumption of storage systems显示文摘Energy consumption is one of the most significant aspects of large-scale storage systems where multilevel caches are widely used. In a typical hierarchical storage structure, upper-level storage serves as a cache for the lower level, forming a distributed multilevel cache system. In the past two decades, several classic LRU-based multilevel cache policies have been proposed to improve the overall I/O performance of storage systems. However, few power-aware multilevel cache policies focus on the storage devices in the bottom level, which consume more than 27% of the energy of the whole system [1]. To address this problem, we propose a novel power-aware multilevel cache (PAM) policy that can reduce the energy consumption of high-performance and I/O bandwidth storage devices. In our PAM policy, an appropriate number of cold dirty blocks in the upper level cache are identified and selected to flush directly to the storage devices, providing high probability extension of the lifetime of disks in standby mode. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed policy, we conduct several simulations with real-world traces. Compared to existing popular cache schemes such as PA? 9HSCS:a hybrid shared cache scheduling scheme for multiprogrammed workloads显示文摘The traditional dynamic random-access memory (DRAM)storage medium can be integrated on chips via modem emerging 3D-stacking technology to architect a DRAM shared cache in multicore systems.Compared with static random-access memory (SRAM),DRAM is larger but slower.In the existing research,a lot of work has been devoted to improving the workload performance using SRAM and stacked DRAM together in shared cache systems,ranging from SRAM structure improvement to optimizing cache tags and data access.However,little attention has been paid to designing a shared cache scheduling scheme for multiprogrammed workloads with different memory footprints in multicore systems.Motivated by this,we propose a hybrid shared cache scheduling scheme that allows a multicore system to utilize SRAM and 3D-stacked DRAM efficiently, thus achieving better workload performance.This scheduling scheme employs (1)a cache monitor,which is used to collect cache statistics;(2)a cache evaluator,which is used to evaluate the cache information during the process of programs being executed;and (3)a cache switcher,which is used to self-adaptively choose SRAM or DRAM shared cache modules.A cache data migration policy is naturally developed to guarantee that the scheduling scheme works correctly.Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the workload performance of our proposed scheme.The experimental resuits showed that our method can improve the multiprogrammed workload performance by up to 25%compared with state-of-the-art methods (including conventional and DRAM cache systems).Jingyu ZHANG Chentao WU Dingyu YANG Yuanyi CHEN Xiaodong MENG Liting XU Minyi GUO 2018Frontiers of Computer Science2018,12,6:1

18Probabilistic robust regression with adaptive weights-a case study on face recognition显示文摘Robust regression plays an important role in many machine learning problems.A primal approach relies on the use of Huber loss and an iteratively reweightedℓ2 method.However,because the Huber loss is not smooth and its corresponding distribution cannot be represented as a Gaussian scale mixture,such an approach is extremely difficult to handle using a probabilistic framework.To address those limitations,this paper proposes two novel losses and the corresponding probability functions.One is called Soft Huber,which is well suited for modeling non-Gaussian noise.Another is Nonconvex Huber,which can help produce much sparser results when imposed as a prior on regression vector.They can represent anyℓq loss(1/2≤q<2)with tuning parameters,which makes the regression model more robust.We also show that both distributions have an elegant form,which is a Gaussian scale mixture with a generalized inverse Gaussian mixing density.This enables us to devise an expectation maximization(EM)algorithm for solving the regression model.We can obtain an adaptive weight through EM,which is very useful to remove noise data or irrelevant features in regression problems.We apply our model to the face recognition problem and show that it not only reduces the impact of noise pixels but also removes more irrelevant face images.Our experiments demonstrate the promising results on two datasets.Jin Li Quan Chen Jingwen Leng Weinan Zhang Minyi Guo 2020Frontiers of Computer Science2020,14,5:0
19CATIRI:An Efficient Method for Content-and-Text Based Image Retrieval显示文摘The combination of visual and textual information in image retrieval remarkably alleviates the semantic gap of traditional image retrieval methods,and thus it has attracted much attention recently.Image retrieval based on such a combination is usually called the content-and-text based image retrieval(CTBIR).Nevertheless,existing studies in CTBIR mainly make efforts on improving the retrieval quality.To the best of our knowledge,little attention has been focused on how to enhance the retrieval efficiency.Nowadays,image data is widespread and expanding rapidly in our daily life.Obviously,it is important and interesting to investigate the retrieval efficiency.To this end,this paper presents an efficient image retrieval method named CATIRI(content-and-text based image retrieval using indexing).CATIRI follows a three-phase solution framework that develops a new indexing structure called MHIM-tree.The MHIM-tree seamlessly integrates several elements including Manhattan Hashing,Inverted index,and M-tree.To use our MHIM-tree wisely in the query,we present a set of important metrics and reveal their inherent properties.Based on them,we develop a top-k query algorithm for CTBIR.Experimental results based on benchmark image datasets demonstrate that CATIRI outperforms the competitors by an order of magnitude.Mengqi Zeng Bin Yao Zhi-Jie Wang Yanyan Shen Feifei Li Jianfeng Zhang Hao Lin Minyi Guo 2019Journal of Computer Science & Technology2019,34,2:0
20FPGA sharing in the cloud: a comprehensive analysis显示文摘Cloud vendors are actively adopting FPGAs into their infrastructures for enhancing performance and efficiency.As cloud services continue to evolve,FPGA(field programmable gate array)systems would play an even important role in the future.In this context,FPGA sharing in multi-tenancy scenarios is crucial for the wide adoption of FPGA in the cloud.Recently,many works have been done towards effective FPGA sharing at different layers of the cloud computing stack.In this work,we provide a comprehensive survey of recent works on FPGA sharing.We examine prior art from different aspects and encapsulate relevant proposals on a few key topics.On the one hand,we discuss representative papers on FPGA resource sharing schemes;on the other hand,we also summarize important SW/HW techniques that support effective sharing.Importantly,we further analyze the system design cost behind FPGA sharing.Finally,based on our survey,we identify key opportunities and challenges of FPGA sharing in future cloud scenarios.Jinyang GUO Lu ZHANG JoséROMERO HUNG Chao LI Jieru ZHAO Minyi GUO 2023Frontiers of Computer Science2023,17,5:0
