1One-year clinical study of NeuroR egen scaffold implantation following scar resection in complete chronic spinal cord injury patients显示文摘The objective of this clinical study was to assess the safety and feasibility of the collagen scaffold, Neuro Regen scaffold, one year after scar tissue resection and implantation. Scar tissue is a physical and chemical barrier that prevents neural regeneration. However, identification of scar tissue is still a major challenge. In this study, the nerve electrophysiology method was used to distinguish scar tissue from normal neural tissue, and then different lengths of scars ranging from 0.5–4.5 cm were surgically resected in five complete chronic spinal cord injury(SCI) patients. The NeuroR egen scaffold along with autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells(BMMCs), which have been proven to promote neural regeneration and SCI recovery in animal models, were transplanted into the gap in the spinal cord following scar tissue resection. No obvious adverse effects related to scar resection or Neuro Regen scaffold transplantation were observed immediately after surgery or at the 12-month follow-up. In addition, patients showed partially autonomic nervous function improvement, and the recovery of somatosensory evoked potentials(SSEP) from the lower limbs was also detected. 2Long-term clinical observation of patients with acute and chronic complete spinal cord injury after transplantation of Neuro Regen scaffold显示文摘Spinal cord injury(SCI)often results in an inhibitory environment at the injury site.In our previous studies,transplantation of a scaffold combined with stem cells was proven to induce neural regeneration in animal models of complete SCI.Based on these preclinical studies,collagen scaffolds loaded with the patients’own bone marrow mononuclear cells or human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells were transplanted into SCI patients.Fifteen patients with acute complete SCI and 51 patients with chronic complete SCI were enrolled and followed up for 2 to 5 years.No serious adverse events related to functional scaffold transplantation were observed.Among the patients with acute SCI,five patients achieved expansion of their sensory positions and six patients recovered sensation in the bowel or bladder.Additionally,four patients regained voluntary walking ability accompanied by reconnection of neural signal transduction.Among patients with chronic SCI,16 patients achieved expansion of their sensation level and 30 patients experienced enhanced reflexive defecation sensation or increased skin sweating below the injury site.Nearly half of the patients with chronic cervical SCI developed enhanced finger activity.These long-term follow-up results suggest that functional scaffold transplantation may represent a feasible treatment for patients with complete SCI.Fengwu Tang Jiaguang Tang Yannan Zhao Jiaojiao Zhang Zhifeng Xiao Bing Chen Guang Han Na Yin Xianfeng Jiang Changyu Zhao Shixiang Cheng Ziqiang Wang Yumei Chen Qiaoling Chen Keran Song Zhiwei Zhang Junjie Niu Lingjun Wang Qin Shi Liang Chen Huilin Yang Shuxun Hou Sai Zhang Jianwu Dai 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5:3

9One-step exfoliation and deprotonation of ANF/BNNS suspension for constructing 3D vertically aligned skeleton in epoxy-based thermal management composites显示文摘Two-dimensional(2D)boron nitride nanosheet(BNNS)is promising in polymer-based thermal management materials(TMMs)by pre-constructing three-dimensional(3D)thermally conductive skeleton,but it yet suffers from the challenges of higheffective exfoliation and affinitive compatibility with matrix.In this work,we developed a one-step exfoliation and deprotonation approach by the high-effective ball milling technique to prepare aramid nanofiber(ANF)/BNNS suspension.Under the strong collision/shear effect of ball-milling,micron-level h BN sheets were exfoliated into smaller and thinner BNNS with edge functional groups,meanwhile,poly-p-phenylene terephthalamide(PPTA)fibers were split into ANF by dissociating the intermolecular hydrogen bonds.More importantly,both the exfoliation and deprotonation could be accelerated by each other to achieve a 100%yield of ANF/BNNS suspension with strong hydrogen/covalent bonding interactions between them.Subsequently,the prepared ANF/BNNS suspension was used to construct 3D vertically aligned ANF/BNNS skeleton by the unidirectional freezing method.The obtained epoxy-based composite(EP/ANF/BNNS)revealed excellent thermal conductivity of 2.41 W m^(-1)K^(-1) at 14.9 vol%BNNS loading due to the vertically oriented heat conduction paths and low interfacial thermal resistance in the skeleton.Moreover,EP/ANF/BNNS composite showed high thermal stability and extraordinary fire retardancy with dramatically decreased heat release rate(265 W g^(-1)) and total heat release(20.6 kJ g^(-1)).Therefore,this work demonstrates a high-efficient one-step ball-milling exfoliation and deprotonation technique for preparing ANF/BNNS suspension,which reveals an enormous potential in preparing advanced TMMs by constructing 3D thermally conductive skeletons.HAN GaoJie XUE PeiWen CAI ZhengHao FENG YueZhan LIU ChunTai SHEN ChangYu 2022Science China(Technological Sciences)2022,65,11:0
10Adjuvant chemotherapy versus adjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy after radical surgery for early-stage cervical cancer:a randomized,non-inferiority,multicenter trial显示文摘We conducted a prospective study to assess the non-inferiority of adjuvant chemotherapy alone versus adjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) as an alternative strategy for patients with early-stage (FIGO 2009 stage IB–IIA) cervical cancer having risk factors after surgery. The condition was assessed in terms of prognosis, adverse effects, and quality of life. This randomized trial involved nine centers across China. Eligible patients were randomized to receive adjuvant chemotherapy or CCRT after surgery. The primary end-point was progression-free survival (PFS). From December 2012 to December 2014, 337 patients were subjected to randomization. Final analysis included 329 patients, including 165 in the adjuvant chemotherapy group and 164 in the adjuvant CCRT group. The median follow-up was 72.1 months. The three-year PFS rates were both 91.9%, and the five-year OS was 90.6% versus 90.0% in adjuvant chemotherapy and CCRT groups, respectively. No significant differences were observed in the PFS or OS between groups. The adjusted HR for PFS was 0.854 (95% confidence interval 0.415–1.757;P = 0.667) favoring adjuvant chemotherapy, excluding the predefined non-inferiority boundary of 1.9. The chemotherapy group showed a tendency toward good quality of life. In comparison with post-operative adjuvant CCRT, adjuvant chemotherapy treatment showed non-inferior efficacy in patients with early-stage cervical cancer having pathological risk factors. 11Variations in terrestrial oxygen sources under climate change显示文摘The terrestrial ecosystem is an important source of atmospheric oxygen, and its changes are closely related to variations in atmospheric oxygen level. However, few studies have focused on the characteristics and driving forces behind terrestrial ecosystem oxygen sources. In this study, based on observations and net carbon flux simulations from the Sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, we investigated temporal and spatial variations in terrestrial oxygen sources. As the largest source of atmospheric oxygen, the terrestrial ecosystem can produce approximately 7.10±0.38 gigatons of oxygen per year, and the tropics are the main oxygen producing regions. Notably, there are many “non-oxygen-producing lands”, where the lands no longer provide oxygen to the atmosphere, located in the high latitudes and around the deserts of Central Asia. Long-term analysis reveals that anthropogenic activities and climate change are responsible for the variations in terrestrial oxygen sources owing to land-use changes and competing effects between net photosynthesis and heterotrophic respiration. By 2100, more oxygen will be produced from the low-middle latitudes, while the high latitudes will serve as a larger oxygen sink due to extreme land-use type changes and drastic increases in soil respiration.
