11Comparison of Apigenin,Quercetin and Kaempferol Accumulation and Total Flavonoid Content in Leaves,Embryogenic Cultures and Cell Suspension Cultures of Parsley(Petroselinum crispum)显示文摘In recent years,there has been a growing interest in exploring alternative treatments for bone defects.Bone tissue engineering has turned its attention to plant extracts containing osteogenic flavonoids as potential promoters of bone regeneration.In our study,we specifically investigated the extract of Petroselinum crispum,a plant known for its abundance of osteogenic flavonoids such as apigenin,quercetin,and kaempferol.Our objective was to compare the total flavonoid content(TFC)and their accumulation in different sources.We obtained hydrolyzed aqueous extracts from the leaves of parsley plants(grown for 12 weeks in the field),weekly embryogenic cultures,and suspension cell cultures.The TFC,measured in mg quercetin equivalent per gram of dry weight(QE mg/g dw),was found to be 53.81±0.97 for 52 g dw of leaves(1 kg plant fw),31.10±1.52 for 420 g dw of embryogenic cultures,and 11.80±0.76 for 210 g dw of cell suspensions.Notably,only the leaves and embryogenic cultures showed significant accumulation of osteogenic flavonoids,with apigenin levels of 1.8±0.3 and 0.32±0.02 mg/g dw,and kaempferol levels of 1.0±0.18 and 0.2±0.01 mg/g dw,respectively.Our findings indicate that embryogenic cultures have the potential to produce up to 40%more apigenin in 12 weeks compared to 1 kg of parsley plant,thanks to their superior biomass reproductive competence.These results present a promising biotechnological approach for generating extracts enriched with bioactive compounds,which can be further utilized in in vitro osteogenic testing.Laura Isabel Arias-Rodríguez Martha Alicia Rodríguez-Mendiola Carlos Arias-Castro Federico Antonio Gutiérrez Miceli Diana Reséndez Pérez María Celina Luján Hidalgo Juan JoséVillalobos Maldonado Norma Alejandra Mancilla Margalli 2023Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,10:0
12Acceptance of living liver donation among medical students: A multicenter stratified study from Spain显示文摘AIM: To analyze the attitude of Spanish medical students toward living liver donation(LLD) and to establish which factors have an influence on this attitude.METHODS: Study type: A sociological, interdisciplinary, multicenter and observational study. Study population: Medical students enrolled in Spain(n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. Sample size: A sample of 9598 students stratified by geographical area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A validated questionnaire(PCID-DVH RIOS) was self-administered and completed anonymously. Data collection procedure: Randomly selected medical schools. The questionnaire was applied to each academic year at compulsory sessions. Statistical analysis: Student′s t test, χ2 test and logistic regression analysis.RESULTS: The completion rate was 95.7%(n = 9275). 89%(n = 8258) were in favor of related LLD, and 32%(n = 2937) supported unrelated LLD. 13Renal function and choroidal thickness using swept-source optical coherence tomography in diabetic patients显示文摘AIM: To assess the relationship between choroidal thickness and renal function in diabetic patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional retrospective clinical study of 42 eyes of 21 ocular treatment-na?ve diabetic patients. Demographic data included: age, sex, type and course of diabetes. Ocular data included: severity of diabetic retinopathy;retinal thickness at the central macular region, as well as choroidal thickness at the central and paracentral quadrants, using automatically generated maps by swept-source optical coherence tomography;presence of cystic macular edema;and ocular axial length(AXL). Lab-test parameters included: glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c), albuminuria, albumin/creatinine ratio in urine, and glomerular filtration rate. RESULTS: A significant negative correlation was mainly observed between several choroidal thicknesses, age(P<0.020) and ocular AXL(P<0.030). On the contrary, a significant positive correlation was found between all choroidal thicknesses, HbA1 c(P<0.035) and albuminuria(P<0.040). 14Relationships between soil pollution by heavy metals and melanin-dependent coloration of a fossorial amphisbaenian reptile显示文摘Melanin is the basis of coloration in many animals,and although it is often used in communication,thermoregulation,or camouflage,melanin has many other physiological functions.For example,in polluted habitats,melanin can have a detoxifying function.Melanic coloration would help to sequester in the skin the heavy metal contaminants from inside the body,which will be expelled to the exterior when the skin is sloughed.Moreover,animals should have evolved more melanic colorations in more polluted habitats(“industrial melanism”hypothesis).We examined whether the fossorial amphisbaenian reptile,Trogonophis wiegmanni,is able to eliminate heavy metals,derived from soil pollution by seagull depositions,through sloughing its skin.Our results suggest a covariation between levels of soil pollution by heavy metals and the concentration of heavy metals in the sloughed skins of amphisbaenians.This suggests that amphisbaenians may expel heavy metals from their bodies when they slough the skins.We also tested whether amphisbaenians inhabiting soils with higher levels of heavy metal pollution had darker(melanin-dependent)body colorations.However,contrary to predictions from the“industrial melanization”hypothesis,we found a negative relationship between soil pollution and proportions of melanic coloration.This contradictory result could,however,be explained because heavy metals have endocrine disruption effects that increase physiological stress,and higher stress levels could result in decreased melanogenesis.We suggest that although amphisbaenians might have some detoxifying mechanism linked to melanin in the skin,this process might be negatively affected by stress and result ineffective under conditions of high soil pollution.JoséMARTÍN Pablo RECIO Gonzalo RODRÍGUEZ-RUIZ Isabel BARJA Eduardo GUTIÉRREZ Luis VGARCÍA 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,4:0
