Anti-HBc screening in Indian blood donors:Still an unresolved issue显示文摘AIM:To study the seroprevalence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) in healthy blood donors negative for HBsAg and to evaluate whether anti-HBc detection could be adopted in India as a screening assay for HBV in addition to HBsAg. METHODS: A total of 1700 serum samples collected from HBsAg-negative healthy blood donors were tested for the presence of anti-HBc antibody (IgM + IgG). All samples reactive for anti-HBc antibody were then investigated for presence of anti-HBs and for liver function tests (LFTs). One hundred serum samples reactive for anti-HBc were tested for HBV DNA by PCR method. RESULTS: Out of 1700 samples tested, 142 (8.4%) blood samples were found to be reactive for anti-HBc. It was signif icantly lower in voluntary (6.9%) as compared to replacement donors (10.4%, P = 0.011). Seventy- two (50.7%) anti-HBc reactive samples were also reactive for anti-HBs with levels > 10 mIU/mL and 70 (49.3%) samples were non-reactive for anti-HBs, these units were labeled as anti-HBc-only. These 142 anti-HBc reactive units were also tested for liver function test. HBV DNA was detected in only 1 of 100 samples tested. CONCLUSION: Keeping in view that 8%-18% of donor population in India is anti-HBc reactive, inclusion of anti- HBc testing will lead to high discard rate. Anti-HBs as proposed previously does not seem to predict clearance of the virus. Cost effectiveness of introducing universalanti-HBc screening and discarding large number of blood units versus considering ID NAT (Individual donor nuclic acid testing) needs to be assessed.Hari Krishan Dhawan Neelam Marwaha Ratti Ram Sharma Yogesh Chawla Beenu Thakral Karan Saluja Sanjeev Kumar Sharma Manish K Thakur Ashish Jain 2008World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,34:8

Influence of cohesion on California bearing ratio of clay-gravel mixtures显示文摘An understanding of the behavior of cohesive sediment is required to solve various engineering problems such as scour around bridge elements, mitigation of soil erosion, pavement design, river bed degradation, stable channel design.Pavement foundation designers principally use the California bearing ratio(CBR)to describe the subgrade and subbase materials and their strength.Several laboratory experiments were done to study the variation in the CBR of cohesive mixtures comprised of clay-gravel mixtures.Nine different clay-gravel mixtures were used in which the clay content varies from 10%to 50%by weight. The variation of the CBR with clay percentage, moisture content, and undrained shear strength parameters was studied. The CBR value reduces with the increase in the moisture content and clay fraction in the mixtures and increases with an increase in the dry density of the mixture under unsoaked conditions. The CBR also increases with the increase of the angle of internal friction of clay-gravel mixtures.A functional relation has been identified to estimate the CBR of clay-gravel mixtures.Using multiple linear regression analysis(MLRA),a relation is proposed to estimate the CBR of clay-gravel mixtures under unsoaked conditions.A statistical analysis was done to judge the behavior of the pertinent variables on the CBR.The proposed relation predicts the CBR of clay-gravel mixtures very well.Artificial neural network(ANN)analysis using R programming was also done to determine the effects of the pertinent variables on the CBR.ANN methodology was applied to predict the contribution of each variable.Three different methods:Garson algorithm,Olden algorithm, and Lek's profile model are used to assess the influence of variable parameters. The Olden algorithm and Lek's profile both show positive association of cohesion with CBR in an unsoaked condition. The role of moisture content was found to be marginally negative in the Olden algorithm and Lek's profile results. It is found that both the ANN and MLRA models are accurate in predicting the CBR of clay-gravel mixtures. It was further found that the MLRA and ANN models are reliable and rapid tools for correct assessment of the CBR of cohesive soil mixtures using the basic soil properties.Rajesh Jain Ketan Timani Manish Pandey 2023International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,3:0
Tongue thickness in health vs cirrhosis of the liver:Prospective observational study显示文摘BACKGROUNDMalnutrition affects 40%-90% of patients with cirrhosis of the liver. L3 skeletalmuscle index (L3SMI) is presently accepted as the most objective and quantitativemeasure available for sarcopenia, a surrogate marker of malnutrition. L3SMIapplication is, however, limited by non-availability of computed tomographyscanning in remote areas, cost, need for extensive training, and the risk ofexposure to radiation. Therefore, an alternative dependable measure with wideravailability is needed. Malnutrition causes sarcopenia not only in skeletal musclesbut also in other muscular structures such as the psoas muscle, diaphragm andtongue. We therefore hypothesised that the tongue, being easily accessible forinspection and for measurement of thickness using ultrasonography, may be usedto document sarcopenia.AIMTo measure and compare tongue thickness in healthy individuals and in patientswith cirrhosis of the liver and to study its correlation with conventionalprognostic scores for patients with cirrhosis of the liver.METHODSTongue thickness was measured using ultrasonography. One hundred twentysubjects of either gender aged 18 to 65 years were studied, with 30 subjects in eachgroup. The tongue thickness was compared between groups based on “ChildTurcotte Pugh” (CTP) scores. The correlations between measured tonguethickness and “Model for end stage liver disease” (MELD) score and between age and measured tongue thickness were also assessed.RESULTSMean tongue thickness (mean ± SD) in patients with CTP class A, B and C was4.39 ± 0.39 cm, 4.19 ± 0.53 cm, and 3.87 ± 0.42, respectively, and was 4.33 ± 0.49 cmin normal healthy individuals. Significant differences were seen in tonguethickness between patients with CTP class C and those with CTP class A and B (P< 0.05). Patients with CTP class C also had a significantly reduced tonguethickness than normal individuals (P < 0.05). However, no significant differencewas seen in tongue thickness between patients with CTP class A and B andnormal individuals. A statistically significant, negative correlation was foundbetween MELD score and tongue thickness (r = -0.331) (P < 0.001). No correlationwas observed between L3SMI and MELD score (r = 0.074, P = 0.424). L3SMI(mean ± SD) in healthy subjects was 39.66 ± 6.8 and was 38.26 ± 8.88 in patientswith CTP class C, and the difference was not significant. No significant correlationwas found between age of the patients and tongue thickness. Intra-classcorrelation coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the tonguethickness measurements. The intra-class correlation coefficient was 0.984 (95%CI:0.979-0.989) and was indicative of good reliability.CONCLUSIONTongue thickness measured by ultrasonography, correlates significantly with theseverity of liver disease, as assessed by CTP and MELD scores. The patients with aCTP score ≥ 10 have significantly reduced tongue thickness as compared tonormal individuals and those with less severe liver disease and CTP scores of 5-9.No significant difference in tongue thickness was found between healthyindividuals and CTP class A and B patients.Manish Tandon Harshita Singh Nishant Singla Priyanka Jain Chandra Kant Pandey 2020World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pharmacology and Therapeutics2020,11,3:0
Artificial neural network based modeling of liquid membranes for separation of dysprosium显示文摘In recent years, the liquid membrane process has been widely investigated to remove rare earth metals. However, transport modeling of this process requires the accurate values of several parameters, which are difficult to measure. Thus, the accurate simulation of this process is a challenging task.In this study, the artificial neural network(ANN)based approach is used to model the liquid membrane process for removing dysprosium.Experimental results from a previous study were used to train the ANN.Initially, the number of neurons in the hidden layer was optimized. The minimum mean squared error between experimental results and model predictions is found with ten neurons.Model predictions were successfully validated with experimental results with correlation factor(R)of 0.9987,which confirms the authenticity of the trained network.Trained ANN was then used to study the effects of different operating parameters on transport rate. The higher volume ratio of membrane solution to feed solution(3-4)with 50-60 min of operation, higher feed pH(5),HCl concentration in stripping solution of 2 mol/L,and moderate concentration of carrier species(0.5 mol/L)with 0.5×10^(-4) mol/L dysprosium initial concentration are found to be optimum values of operating conditions for maximizing the transport rate.Jawad Iqbal Arjun Tyagi Manish Jain 2023Journal of Rare Earths2023,41,3:0
Exciton fine structure in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures显示文摘Moirésuperlattices of transition metal dichalcogenide(TMD)heterostructures give rise to rich excitonic phenomena associated with the interlayer twist angle.Theoretical calculations of excitons in such systems are typically based on model moirépotentials that mitigate the computational cost. However, predictive understanding of the electron-hole coupling dominating the excitations is crucial to realize the twist-induced modifications of the optical selection rules. In this work,we use many-body perturbation theory to evaluate the relation between twist angle and exciton properties in TMD heterostructures. We present an approach for unfolding excitonic states from the moiréBrillouin zone onto the separate-layer ones.Applying this method to a large-angle twisted MoS^(2)/MoSe^(2) bilayer,we find that the optical spectrum is dominated by mixed electron–hole transitions with different momenta in the separate monolayers, leading to unexpected hybridization between interlayer and intralayer excitons. Our findings offer a design pathway for exciton layer-localization in TMD heterostructures.Sudipta Kundu Tomer Amit H.R.Krishnamurthy Manish Jain Sivan Refaely-Abramson 2023npj Computational Materials2023,,1:0
