| 1 | Determinants of the impact of blood pressure variability on neurological outcome after acute ischaemic stroke显示文摘Introduction: Increased blood pressure variability (BPV) is detrimental after acute ischaemic stroke, but the interaction between BPV and neuroimaging factors that directly influence stroke outcome has not been explored. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed inpatients from 2007 to 2014 with acute anterior circulation ischaemic stroke, CT perfusion and angiography at hospital admission, and a modified Rankin Scale (MRS) 30- 365 days after stroke onset. BPV indices included SD, coefficient of variation and successive variation of the systolic blood pressure between 0 and 120 hours after admission. Ordinal logistic regression models were fitted to MRS with predictor variables of BPV indices. Models were further stratified by CT perfusion volumetric measurements, proximal vessel occlusion and collateral score. Results: 110 patients met the inclusion criteria. The likelihood of a 1-point rise in the MRS increased with every 10 mm Hg increase in BPV (OR for the 3 BPV indices ranged from 2.27 to 5.54), which was more pronounced in patients with larger ischaemic core volumes (OR 8.37 to 18.0) and larger hypoperfused volumes (OR 6.02 to 15.4). This association also held true for patients with larger mismatch volume, proximal vessel occlusion and good collateral vessels. Conclusions: These results indicate that increased BPV is associated with worse neurological outcome after stroke, particularly in patients with a large lesion core volume, concurrent viable ischaemic penumbra, proximal vessel occlusion and good collaterals. | 7 | Reproductive behavior in horseshoe crabs:Does density matter?显示文摘While the four species of horseshoe crabs share many common reproductive traits with respect to their reproductivesystems,they do differ with respect to their mating behavior (monogamy vs.polygynandry).Past research has attributed thesedifferences to a number of factors including:spawning densities,operational sex ratios (OSR's),male condition (or age),environmentaland/or genetic factors,or a combination thereof.Mating behaviors in the three Asian horseshoe crab species (Tachypleusgigas,T.tridentatus,and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda) with low spawning densities and 1:1 operational sex ratios aretypically monogamous.In Limulus polyphemus,mating behavior is more variable ranging from monogamy to polygynandry.Herewe provide evidence,through a long term behavioral study,that variation in mating behavior is influenced by population densityin L.polyphemus.Our study population on two beaches in Connecticut (Long Island Sound) have a spawning density 400 timesless than that found in Delaware Bay (0.002 females/m^2 vs.0.8 females/m^2) but similar operational sex ratios.Between 90%-95%of all spawning females in CT were paired with only one male,thus exhibiting monogamous behavior.In contrast,between 30and 60% of spawning females in Delaware Bay have more than one mate and produce clutches of eggs with multiple paternities.Male condition played no role in mating behavior in CT populations.We also observed that on average 18% of the females on thespawning beaches are single.These results suggest that population density is an important condition that determines mating behavior.Also,low population density may lead to decreased mate finding ability and lost opportunities for | Jennifer H.MATTEI Mark A.BEEKEY Adam RUDMAN Alyssa WORONIK | 2010 | Current Zoology2010，56，5： | 2 |
