| 1 | A review of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and alternative brominated flame retardants in wildlife from China:Levels,trends,and bioaccumulation characteristics显示文摘Accelerated industrialization and urbanization,and unregulated disposal of waste of electric and electronic equipment(e-waste) in China have caused environmental pollution of brominated flame retardants(BFRs).This review summarized the levels,trends,and bioaccumulation characteristics of polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs) and other potential alternative BFRs including hexabromocyclododecanes(HBCDs),1,2-bis(2,4,6-dibromophenoxy) ethane(BTBPE) and decabromodiphenylethane(DBDPE) in wildlife from China.PBDE levels in wildlife from China were generally higher than those from other parts in Asia,and were comparable to those from Europe but were lower than those from North America.However,wildlife from the e-waste recycling sites in South China and East China contained much higher PBDEs compared to other reports around the world,suggesting the heavy contamination of PBDEs in these regions.The alternative BFRs were also detected in wildlife,revealing that the animals are exposed to these chemicals,in addition to PBDEs.Temporal trends indicated by levels in marine mammals from South China suggested that PBDE levels increased from the beginning of 1990s to 2000s,but decreased from the middle of 2000s,followed by relatively steady levels.In contrast,HBCDs were found to be continuously increasing from 1997 to 2007,indicating the increasing usage of HBCDs in China in recent years.Compared to PBDE profiles found in other parts,aquatic species and birds from China contained relatively higher contributions of BDE28 and 209,respectively,suggesting the possible different usage pattern of PBDEs.Future works including keeping monitoring at a reasonable scale and frequency to make sure levels near urban centers indicative of population do not increase are needed.Additionally,focus effort on e-waste recycling regions to look for impacts and to determine if regulation/controls are resulting in lower environmental contamination,and incorporation of sentinel species in monitoring efforts are recommended. | Jiangping Wu Ying Zhang Xiaojun Luo Yazhe She Lehuan Yu Shejun Chen Bixian Mai | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,2: | 15 |
| 2 | Effects of subchronic oral toxic metal exposure on the intestinal microbiota of mice显示文摘Oral exposure to toxic metals such as cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb), copper(Cu) and aluminum(Al) can induce various adverse health effects in humans and animals. However, the effects of these metals on the gut microbiota have received limited attention. The present study demonstrated that long-term toxic metal exposure altered the intestinal microbiota of mice in a metal-specific and time-dependent manner.Subchronic oral Cu exposure for eight weeks caused a profound decline in gut microbial diversity in mice,whereas no significant changes were observed in groups treated with other metals. Cd exposure significantly increased the relative abundances of organisms from the genera Alistipes and Odoribacter and caused marked decreases in Mollicutes and unclassified Ruminococcaceae. Pb exposure significantly decreased the abundances of eight genera: unclassified and uncultured Ruminococcaceae, unclassified Lachnospiraceae, Ruminiclostridium_9, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Oscillibacter, Anaerotruncus and Lachnoclostridium. Cu exposure affected abundances of the genera Alistipes, Bacteroides,Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014, Allobaculum, Mollicutes_RF9_norank, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group,Ruminococcaceae_unclassified and Turicibacter. Al exposure increased the abundance of Odoribacter and decreased that of Anaerotruncus. Exposure to any metal for eight weeks significantly decreased the abundance of Akkermansia. | 3 | Function of note strings in Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo:a playback experiment显示文摘Background: Birds produce alarm calls to convey information about threats. Some Passerine alarm calls consist of several note strings, but few studies have examined their function. Previous studies have shown that Japanese Tits(Parus minor) can alter the calling rate and number and combination of notes in response to predators. We previously found the combinations of note types in Japanese Tit alarm calls to be significantly different in response to the Sparrowhawk(Accipiter nisus) and Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus).Methods: Through playback experiments, we tested whether the note strings in Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo have different functions in conveying information. The note strings of selected alarm calls were divided into the categories of C and D, and different calls were then constructed separately based on the two note string categories. Original alarm calls(C–D), C calls and D calls were played back to male Japanese Tits during the incubation period.Results: Male Japanese Tits had a significantly stronger response to C calls than to C–D calls, and they showed a significantly stronger response to both C and C–D calls than to D calls, suggesting that Japanese Tits discriminated between the C and D calls.Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the C-and D-category note strings of Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo have different functions, which supports the previous finding that different note strings in an alarm call can provide different information to receivers. | 4 | Vertical Distribution of Soil Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus in Typical Chinese Terrestrial Ecosystems显示文摘Characterization of the vertical distribution of soil organic carbon(C), nitrogen(N), and phosphorus(P) may improve our ability to accurately estimate soil C, N, and P storage. Based on a database of 21 354 records in 74 long-term monitoring plots from 2004 to 2013 in the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network(CERN), we built fitting functions to quantify the vertical distribution of soil C, N, and P(up to 100 cm depth) in the typical Chinese terrestrial ecosystems. The decrease of soil C, N, and P content with depth can be well fitted with various mathematical functions. The fitting functions differed greatly between artificial(agriculture) and natural(desert, forest, and grassland) ecosystems, and also differed with respect to soil C, N, and P content. In both the artificial and natural ecosystems, the best fitting functions were exponential functions for C, quadratic functions for N, and quadratic functions for P. Furthermore, the stoichiometric ratios of soil C, N, and P were ranked in descending order: grassland > forest > agriculture > desert, and were also associated with climate. This study is the first to build the fitting functions for the profile distribution of soil C, N, and P in China at a national scale. | 6 | Differently sized cuckoos pose different threats to hosts显示文摘Hole-nesting tits Parus spp.have been classified as'unsuitable'hosts for cuckoo parasitism because cuckoos cannot enter a cavity if the entrance is too small.However,Chinese tits could re-ject alien eggs and egg ejection rate increased with the local diversity of parasitic cuckoo species.Antiparasitic behavior among Chinese tits may have evolved due to greater size variation among sympatric cuckoo species.This raises the question of whether differently sized parasitic cuckoos pose different threats to Chinese tits.A green-backed tit Parus monticolus population that is sym-patric with Asian emerald cuckoo Chrysococcyx maculatus(eme-cuckoo,small-sized parasite)and common cuckoo Cuculus canorus(com-cuckoo,large-sized parasite),and a cinereous tit P.cinereus population that is only sympatric with com-cuckoo were chosen as study organisms.We observed behavioral response and recorded alarm calls of the 2 tit species to eme-cuckoo,com-cuckoo,chipmunk Tamias sibiricus(a nest predator)and dove Streptopelia orientalis(a harm-less control),and subsequently played back alarm calls to conspecific incubating females.In dummy experiments,both tit species performed intense response behavior to chipmunk,but rarely responded strongly to the 3 avian species.In playback experiments,both tit species responded strongly to conspecific chipmunk alarm calls,but rarely responded to dove alarm calls.The inten-sity of response of incubating female green-backed tits to eme-cuckoo and com-cuckoo alarm calls were similar to that of chipmunk alarm calls,while the intensity to eme-cuckoo alarm calls was higher than the intensity to dove alarm calls which was similar to that of com-cuckoo alarm calls.In contrast,few female cinereous tits responded to eme-cuckoo and com-cuckoo alarm calls.These findings indicated that the threat level of eme-cuckoo was slightly greater than that of com-cuckoo for sympatric green-backed tits,but not for allopatric cinereous tits. | Jiangping YU Mingju E Wei SUN Wei LIANG Haitao WANG Anders Pape MΦLLER | 2020 | Current Zoology2020,66,3: | 4 |

| 8 | Doping Effects on Electronic Conductivity and Electrochemical Performance of LiFePO_4显示文摘Olivine-structured pure LiFePO4 and doped Li(M, Fe)PO4 (M=La, Ce, Nd, Mn, Co, Ni) have been synthesized by a solvothermal method. X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy analyses indicate that the as-prepared LiFePO4 is well-crystallized nanopowders without any detectable impurity phases. The electronic conductivity of LiFePO4 is enhanced by around 1-3 orders by doping. It was found that doping alone is not suffcient for the high-rate performance of LiFePO4 and surface coating with such as carbon should be needed. The best dopant for LiFePO4 is Nd among those studied in the present work. | 16 | Nitrate application affects root morphology by altering hormonal status and gene expression patterns in B9 apple rootstock nursery plants显示文摘Lateral roots(LRs)are critical for absorbing water,minerals,and nutrients.Nitrate is a vital signaling molecule for regulating LR growth.However,understanding how nitrate interacts with endogenous hormones and genes to coordinate LR development is a bottleneck.In this study,B9 apple rootstock nursery plants were cultured hydroponically and treated with different nitrate treatments(Control;T1,2.25 mM L^(−1);T2,9 mM L^(−1);T3,18 mM L^(−1);T4,36 mM L^(−1);and T5,72 mM L^(−1)),where T5 outperformed the other treatments.Nursery plants were subsequently treated with control and T5 to explore the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms by which nitrate promoted LR growth.Plant height,stem diameter,root morphological parameters,endogenous hormones,and gene expression levels were measured.Results showed that T5 promoted LR growth by increasing the endogenous contents of indole-3-acetic acid(IAA)and gibberellic acid(GA),and by decreasing the contents of abscisic acid(ABA),jasmonic acid(JA),and zeatin riboside(ZR)at most time points.Furthermore,the relative expression levels of nitrate transporter genes were upregulated in the control group,and nitrate assimilation genes were upregulated in T5 nursery plants at various time points.In addition,the transcript abundances of auxin-related genes were higher in T5 nursery plants,which increased auxin contents.MdSHR,MdGATA1,and MdSCR1 expressions were induced,hence increasing LR growth.In contrast,higher auxin content raised MdWOX11 expression,which enhanced the MdLBD16 and MdLBD29 expression levels,thus prompting the transcripts of cell cycle-related genes:MdCYCD1;1 and MdCYCP4;1.Overall,the changes in hormonal content and gene expression levels followed superior LR growth by T5. | Muhammad Mobeen Tahir Xiaoyun Zhang Kamran Shah Faisal Hayat Shaohuan Li Jiangping Mao ke Li Yu Liu Yun Shao Dong Zhang | 2021 | Fruit Research2021,1,1: | 1 |
