| 1 | 'Micro-deletions' of the human Y chromosome and their relationship with male infertility显示文摘The Y chromosome evolves from an autochromosome and accumulates male-related genes including sex-determining region of Y-chromosome (SRY) and several spermatogenesis-related genes. The human Y chromosome (60 Mb long) is largely composed of repeti-tive sequences that give it a heterochromatic appearance, and it consists of pseudoautosomal, euchromatic, and heterochromatic regions. Located on the two extremities of the Y chromosome, pseudoautosomal regions 1 and 2 (PAR1 and PAR2, 2.6 Mb and 320 bp long, re-spectively) are homologs with the termini of the X chromosome. The euchromatic region and some of the repeat-rich heterochromatic parts of the Y chromosome are called 'male-specific Y' (MSY), which occupy more than 95% of the whole Y chromosome. After evolu-tion, the Y chromosome becomes the smallest in size with the least number of genes but with the most number of copies of genes that are mostly spermatogenesis-related. The Y chromosome is characterized by highly repetitive sequences (including direct repeats, inverted repeats, and palindromes) and high polymorphism. Several gene rearrangements on the Y chromosome occur during evolution owing to its specific gene structure. The consequences of such rearrangements are not only loss but also gain of specific genes. One hundred and fifty three haplotypes have been discovered in the human Y chromosome. The structure of the Y chromosome in the GenBank belongs to haplotype R1. There are 220 genes (104 coding genes, 111 pseudogenes, and 5 other uncategorized genes) according to the most recent count. The 104 coding genes encode a total of about 48 proteins/protein families (including putative proteins/protein families). Among them, 16 gene products have been discovered in the azoospermia factor region (AZF) and are related to spermatogenesis. It has been dis-covered that one subset of gene rearrangements on the Y chromosome, 'micro-deletions', is a major cause of male infertility in some populations. However, controversies exist about different Y chromosome haplotypes. Six AZFs of the Y chromosome have been discov-ered including AZFa, AZFb, AZFc, and their combinations AZFbc, AZFabc, and partial AZFc called AZFc/gr/gr. Different deletions in AZF lead to different content spermatogenesis loss from teratozoospermia to infertility in different populations depending on their Y hap-lotypes. This article describes the structure of the human Y chromosome and investigates the causes of micro-deletions and their relation-ship with male infertility from the view of chromosome evolution. After analysis of the relationship between AZFc and male infertility, we concluded that spermatogenesis is controlled by a network of genes, which may locate on the Y chromosome, the autochromosomes, or even on the X chromosome. | 3 | Spatial patterns of ephemeral plants in Gurbantünggüt Desert显示文摘In the present research,the authors measured parameters of richness,cover and importance value of ephemeral and ephemeroid plants on south-north and east-west transects in the Gurbantünggüt Desert in early spring,and investigated and analyzed the microhabitats,such as terrain,geomorphology,soil physical-chemical properties and crusts. By comparison,the regional differences in the ephemeral distribution in the desert were revealed. The species of ephemeral plants in the south and center are the richest and those in the west are the poorest in the desert. The cover of ephemeral plants in the mid-south is higher than that in the north,and that in the mid-east is higher than that in the west. The response of ephemeral plants to the spatial variation of the desert habitat forms the population-habitat gradient of ephemeral plants. The characteristics are:(1) In the habitat with higher terrain,coarser textured soil with poorer sorting and correspondingly higher organic matter and lower alkali-saline contents,Carex physoides and Eremopyrum orientale are the dominant ephemeral plants;(2) In the dry habitat with lower terrain,looser textured soil,some organic matter,alkali-saline soil,and developed crust,the ephemeral plants Alyssum linifolium and Erodium oxyrrhynchum are of characteristic of drought and alkali-saline tolerance;(3) In the habitat with lower terrain,some water and more alkali-saline soil,the ephemeral plants Neotorularia torulosa and Hypecoum parviflorum being of alkali-saline tolerance are mainly developed. However,most ephemerals are distributed in a habitat order of higher terrain,some organic,and less alkali-saline soil on the above-mentioned ephemeral population-habitat gradient. | 5 | A highly porous animal bone-derived char with a superiority of promoting nZVI for Cr(Ⅵ)sequestration in agricultural soils显示文摘Paddy soil and irrigation water are commonly contaminated with hexavalent chromium[Cr(Ⅵ)]near urban industrial areas,thereby threatening the safety of agricultural products and human health.In this study,we develop a porous and high specific area bone char(BC)to support nanoscale zero-valent iron(n ZVI)and apply it to remediate Cr(Ⅵ)pollution in water and paddy soil under anaerobic conditions.The batch experiments reveal that BC/n ZVI exhibits a higher removal capacity of 516.7 mg/(g·n ZVI)for Cr(Ⅵ)than n ZVI when normalized to the actual n ZVI content,which is 2.8 times that of n ZVI;moreover,the highest n ZVI utilization is the n ZVI loading of 15%(BC/n ZVI15).The Cr(Ⅵ)removal efficiency of BC/n ZVI15 decreases with increasing p H(4–10).Coexisting ions(phosphate and carbonate)and humic acid can inhibit the removal of Cr(Ⅵ)with BC/n ZVI15.Additionally,BC exhibits a strong advantage in promoting Cr(Ⅵ)removal by n ZVI compared to the widely used biochar and activated carbon.Our results demonstrate that reduction and coprecipitation are the dominant Cr(Ⅵ)removal mechanisms.Furthermore,BC/n ZVI15 shows a significantly higher reduction and removal efficiency as well as a strong anti-interference ability for Cr(Ⅵ)in paddy soil,as compared to n ZVI.These findings provide a new effective material for remediating Cr(Ⅵ)pollution from water and soil. | Kai Liu Fangbai Li Qingwen Tian Chengrong Nie Yibing Ma Zhenlong Zhu Liping Fang Yuanying Huang Siwen Liu | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,6: | 7 |
| 6 | Prediction of median survival time in sepsis patients by the SOFA score combined with different predictors显示文摘Background:Sepsis is the leading cause of intensive care unit(ICU)admission.The purpose of this study was to explore the prognostic value of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)score,the Acute Physiological and Chronic Health Evaluation Ⅱ(APACHE Ⅱ)score,and procalcitonin(PCT),albumin(ALB),and lactate(LAC)levels in patients with sepsis.Methods:Consecutive adult patients with suspected or documented sepsis at ICU admission were recruited.Their basic vital signs and related auxiliary examinations to determine their PCT and ALB levels and APACHE Ⅱ score were recorded at ICU admission,and their LAC levels and SOFA scores were recorded for one week after admission.The influence of these variables on hospital mortality was evaluated.Logistic regression was used to derive the Sepsis Hospital Mortality Score(SHMS),a prediction equation describing the relationship between predictors and hospital mortality.The median survival time was calculated by the Kaplan–Meier method.In the validation group,the kappa value was calculated to evaluate the stability of the derived formula.Results:This study included 894 sepsis patients admitted to 18 ICUs in 16 tertiary hospitals.Patients were randomly assigned to an experimental group(626 cases)and validation group(258 cases).In addition,a nonsurvival group(248 patients)of the experimental group was established according to the outcome at the time of discharge.The hospital mortality rate in the experimental group was 39.6%(248/626).Univariate and multivariate regression analyses revealed that the APACHE Ⅱ score(odds ratio[OR]=1.178),△SOFA(OR=1.186),△LAC(OR=1.157),and SOFA mean score(OR=1.086)were independently associated with hospital mortality.The SHMS was calculated as logit(p)=4.715–(0.164×APACHE Ⅱ)–(0.171×△SOFA)–(0.145×△LAC)–(0.082×SOFA mean).A receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to further investigate the accuracy of the SHMS,with an area under the curve of 0.851(95%confidence interval[CI]0.821–0.882;p<0.001)for hospital mortality.In the low-risk group and high-risk groups,the corresponding median survival times were 15 days and 11 days,respectively.Conclusion:The APACHE Ⅱ score,△SOFA,△LAC and SOFA mean score were independently associated with hospital mortality in sepsis patients and accurately predicted the hospital mortality rate and median survival time.Data on the median survival time in sepsis patients could be provided to clinicians to assist in the rational use of limited medical resources by facilitating prudent resource allocation.Trial registration:ChiCTR-ECH-13003934,retrospectively registered on August 03,2013. | Wen Li Meiping Wang Bo Zhu Yibing Zhu Xiuming Xi | 2020 | Burns & Trauma2020,8,1: | 7 |

| 10 | Quantitative and morphological differences of nerve fibers between proliferative and mature scars in two-and three-dimensional spaces显示文摘BACKGROUND: Numerous studies use fluorescent microscopy to obtain two-dimensional optical images of the morphology of nerve fibers in hypertrophic scars.In addition,current confocal microscopy studies have focused on normal,not pathological,cutaneous nerves.However,laser scanning confocal microscopy results in a three-dimensional structure of the nerve fibers.OBJECTIVE: To observe quantitative and morphological differences in nerve fibers from the proliferative and mature stage in hypertrophic scars using fluorescent and confocal microscopy.DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING: Neuropathological,comparison study was conducted at the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University,China from June 2006 to July 2007.PARTICIPANTS: Specimens were selected from 30 patients undergoing scar restoration at the Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University of China at 1 month to 23 years following wound healing.The study comprised 20 males and 10 females.The scars were fibrous lesions,erythematous,tough,confined to skin lesions,did not exhibit ulceration or infection,exhibited telangiectasia,with or without itching and pain,and were not locally treated.Samples were equally assigned to two groups according to course of disease: proliferative group (< 6 months) and mature group (6–24 months).Control samples were collected from full-thickness skin from donor sites (n = 10).METHODS: Nerve fiber morphology was observed using fluorescent and confocal microscopy following immunofluorescence of the skin specimens.The microscopic images were semi-quantitatively analyzed to acquire a positive area ratio of neurofilament protein-positive nerve fibers.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Morphology and positive area ratio of neurofilament protein/positive nerve fibers was measured.RESULTS: The positive area ratio of neurofilament protein-positive nerve fibers was significantly greater in the proliferative group compared to the normal control group (P < 0.05).Nerve fibers were irregularly distributed and exhibited local swelling,twisting,and disconnection.However,the positive area ratio of neurofilament protein-positive nerve fibers was significantly less in the mature group compared with the normal control group (P < 0.05).The nerve fibers were arranged in an orderly manner,with intact inner and stereoscopic structures similar to normal skin.CONCLUSION: Compared with mature scars,hypertrophic scars exhibited a greater number of nerve fibers,with more serious pathologies. | Yibing Wang Xia Li Rui Zhang Yongqiang Feng Yu Liu | 2010 | Neural Regeneration Research2010,5,2: | 5 |

| 12 | Study on segmented distribution for reliability evaluation显示文摘In practice, the failure rate of most equipment exhibits different tendencies at different stages and even its failure rate curve behaves a multimodal trace during its life cycle. As a result,traditionally evaluating the reliability of equipment with a single model may lead to severer errors.However, if lifetime is divided into several different intervals according to the characteristics of its failure rate, piecewise fitting can more accurately approximate the failure rate of equipment. Therefore, in this paper, failure rate is regarded as a piecewise function, and two kinds of segmented distribution are put forward to evaluate reliability. In order to estimate parameters in the segmented reliability function, Bayesian estimation and maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) of the segmented distribution are discussed in this paper. Since traditional information criterion is not suitable for the segmented distribution, an improved information criterion is proposed to test and evaluate the segmented reliability model in this paper. After a great deal of testing and verification,the segmented reliability model and its estimation methods presented in this paper are proven more efficient and accurate than the traditional non-segmented single model, especially when the change of the failure rate is time-phased or multimodal. | 13 | Comparison on effect of hydrophobicity on the antibacterial and antifungal activities of α-helical antimicrobial peptides显示文摘HPRP-A1, a 15-mer α-helical cationic peptide, was derived from N-terminus of ribosomal protein L1 (RpL1) of Helicobacter pylori. In this study, HPRP-A1 was used as a framework to obtain a series of peptide analogs with different hydrophobicity by single amino acid substitutions in the center of nonpolar face of the amphipathic helix in order to systematically study the effect of hydrophobicity on biological activities of -helical antimicrobial peptides. Hydrophobicity and net charge of peptides played key roles in the biological activities of these peptide analogs; HPRP-A1 and peptide analogs with relative higher hydrophobicity exerted broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria and pathogenic fungi, but also showed stronger hemolytic activity; the change of hydrophobicity and net charge of peptides had similar effects with close trend and extent on antibacterial activities and antifungal activities. This indicated that there were certain correlations between the antibacterial mode of action and the antifungal mode of action of these peptides in this study. Herein, we review the recent progress in synthesizing {001} facets dominated anatase TiO2 crystals with different morphologies by various synthetic methods. Furthermore, our review is mainly focused on the formation/etching mechanisms of {001} facets dominated anatase TiO2 crystals based on our and other studies. The extensive application potentials of the anatase TiO2 crystals with exposed {001} facets have been summarized in this review such as photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, solar energy conversion, lithium ion battery, and hydrogen generation. | 17 | Can phosphate compounds be used to reduce the plant uptake of Pb and resist the Pb stress in Pb-contaminated soils?显示文摘The effects of different phosphate-amendments on lead(Pb) uptake,the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and the level of malondialdehyde(MDA) in cauliflower(Brassica oleracea L.) in contaminated soils with 2500,or 5000 mg P2O5/kg soil of hydroxyapatite(HA),phosphate rock(PR),single-superphosphate(SSP) and the mix of HA/SSP(HASSP) were evaluated in pot experiments.Results showed that the Pb concentrations in shoots and roots decreased by 18.3%-51.6% and 16.8%-57.3% among the treatments respectively compared to the control samples.The effciency order of these phosphate-amendments in reducing Pb uptake was as follows:HASSP≈ HA > SSP ≈ PR.With the addition of SSP,HA and the mix of HA/SSP,the SOD activity in shoot was reduced markedly(P < 0.05) compared with that in the control group.For example,the SOD activities in shoot by the treatments of HASSP,SSP,and HA in 5000 mg P2O5/kg were found to be only 51.3%,56.2%,and 56.7%,respectively.Similar effects were also observed on the level of MDA in the shoots with a decrease in 24.5%-56.3%.The results verified the inference that phosphate compounds could be used to reduce the plant uptake of Pb and resist the Pb stress in the plant vegetated in Pb-contaminated soils. | CHEN Shibao CHEN Li MA Yibing HUANG Yizong | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,3: | 3 |
