Optimization of passive solar design and integration of building integrated photovoltaic/thermal(BIPV/T)system in northern housing显示文摘In the Canadian north, the cost of space heating is very high due to the harsh weather, its remoteness, lack of transportation, and dependency on the high cost of fossil fuel imported from the South.Since the North has an abundance of solar energy, significant energy savings with some added construction cost in houses could be achieved by applying high-performance building envelopes and solar design strategies. The objective of this paper is to investigate the potential of both passive and active solar design strategies in improving the energy efficiency of northern housing.Firstly,a reference house representing a typical single-family home in the North is modeled using EnergyPlus, and the key passive design parameters are optimized to minimize life-cycle cost. Then, the air-based building integrated photovoltaic/thermal(BIPV/T)system is applied to the optimized house and integrated with HVAC systems. It is found that optimal passive solar design can reduce the heating energy demand by 42%with an incremental cost of 8%for Yellowknife and by 27%without incurring an incremental cost for Kuujjuaq.Integrating BIPV/T with HVAC systems can reduce the defrost time of heat recovery ventilator(HRV),extend the working hours and improve the COP of air source heat pump(ASHP).The reduction in the total energy consumption is in the range of 1,4%-3.0%by integrating HRV and 0.3%-0.6%by integrating ASHP due to the mis-match of solar availability and heating energy demand. To maximize the utilization of solar energy available, the optimal use of thermal energy recovered from BIPV/T system in northern housing requires further investigation. | Li Ma Hua Ge Lin Wang Liangzhu Wang | 2021 | Building Simulation2021,14,5: | 3

Mechanism of calcium lignosulfonate in apatite and dolomite flotation system显示文摘Since the physical and chemical properties of apatite and dolomite can be similar, the separation of these two minerals is difficult. Therefore, when performing this separation using the flotation method,it is necessary to search for selective depressants. An experimental research was performed on the separation behavior of apatite and dolomite using calcium lignosulfonate as a depressant, and the mechanism by which this occurs was analyzed. The results show that calcium lignosulfonate has a depressant effect on both apatite and dolomite, but the depressant effect on dolomite is stronger at the same dosage.Mechanism analysis shows that the adsorptive capacity of calcium lignosulfonate on dolomite is higher than that of apatite, which is due to the strong reaction between calcium lignosulfonate and the Ca sites on dolomite. In addition, there is a hydrogen bond between calcium lignosulfonate and dolomite, which further prevents the adsorption of sodium oleate to dolomite, thus greatly inhibiting the flotation of dolomite. | Bo Feng Liangzhu Zhang Wenpu Zhang Huihui Wang Zhiyong Gao | 2022 | International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2022,29,9: | 2
The theory of compression–shear coupled composite wave propagation in rock显示文摘The wave velocity analysis of rock medium is the main method used to explore the internal compositions in the crust and research seismic. In this paper,a compression–shear coupled nonlinear elastic constitutive relation is established, which is consistent with the mechanical properties of rock and mineral medium under high pressure. On this basis, numerical solutions of the wave equation and plane wave analytical solutions for the primary and secondary wave velocities are obtained. As is indicated by the comparison with the linear elastic constitutive theory, the results reflect the compression–shear coupling characteristics of the rock, including the stress path effect and the compression–shear coupling wave effect. With different parameter values, the velocity of the secondary wave changes from lower than that of the elastic shear wave,to higher than that of the elastic shear wave. The research results are expected to provide meaningful explanations for the physical mechanisms of the supershear wave and sub-Rayleigh wave, and guidance for the detection of rock and soil composition and the observation of seismic waves. | Jianhua Lu Songlin Xu Chunhe Miao Yushan Xie Liangzhu Yuan Hao Ma Meiduo Chen Pengfei Wang | 2022 | Deep Underground Science and Engineering2022,1,1: | 1

Low-temperature and high-voltage planar micro-supercapacitors based on anti-freezing hybrid gel electrolyte显示文摘Micro-supercapacitors(MSCs)are considered as highly competitive power sources for miniaturized electronics. However, narrow voltage window and poor anti-freezing properties of MSCs in conventional aqueous electrolytes lead to low energy density and limited environmental adaption.Herein,we report the construction of low-temperature and high-energy-density MSCs based on anti-freezing hybrid gel electrolytes(HGE)through introducing ethylene glycol(EG)additives into aqueous LiCl electrolyte.Since EG partially destroys hydrogen bond network among water molecules, the HGE exhibits maximum electrochemical stability window of 2.7 V and superior anti-freezing features with a glass transition temperature of-62.8℃.Further,the optimized MSCs using activated carbon microelectrodes possess impressive volumetric capacitance of 28.9 F cm^(-3)and energy density of 10.3 mWh cm^(-3)in the voltage of 1.6 V,2.6 times higher than MSCs tested in 1.2 V.Importantly, the MSCs display 68.3%capacitance retention even at-30℃ compared to the value at 25℃,and ultra-long cyclability with 85.7%of initial capacitance after 15,000 times, indicating extraordinary low-temperature performance.Besides, our devices offer favorable flexibility and modular integration. Therefore, this work provides a general strategy of realizing flexible, safe and anti-freezing microscale power sources, holding great potential towards subzero-temperature microelectronic applications. | Manning Chen Xiaoyu Shi Xiaolei Wang Hanqing Liu Sen Wang Caixia Meng Yu Liu Liangzhu Zhang Yuanyuan Zhu Zhong-Shuai Wu | 2022 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2022,31,9: | 1

MXene coupled with molybdenum dioxide nanoparticles as 2D-0D pseudocapacitive electrode for high performance flexible asymmetric micro-supercapacitors显示文摘Recently,two-dimensional(2D)transition metal carbides and carbonitrides(MXenes),have shown great potential in micro-supercapacitors(MSCs).However,the maximum voltage output of symmetric MXene MSCs is limited to 0.6 V due to the oxidation effects at high anodic potentials.Herein,we developed asymmetric micro-supercapacitors(AMSCs)based on titanium carbide MXene(Ti_(3)C_(2)Tx)and MXene-MoO_(2) electrodes with an enlarged voltage window of 1.2 V,which is twice wider than that of symmetric MXene MSCs.The 2D-0D MXene-MoO_(2) microelectrode is fabricated by homogenous dispersing zerodimensional(0D)MoO_(2) nanoparticles into MXene layers to impede layers stacking and MoO_(2) nanoparticles aggregation.Notably, the AMSCs delivered good electrochemical performances of areal capacitance of ~19 mF cm^(-2) and volumetric capacitance of 63 F cm^(-3) at a scan rate of 2 mV s^(-1),and high energy density of 9.7 mW h cm^(-3) at a power density of 0.198 W cm^(-3).The AMSCs also presented exceptionally mechanical flexibility under different bending states and excellent cyclic stability, with 88% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles at a discharge current density of 0.5 mA cm^(-2).For practical application, the serially connected AMSCs are fully affordable to power electronics, which is beneficial for soft and wearable power devices. | Liangzhu Zhang Guoliang Yang Zhiqiang Chen Dan Liu Jiemin Wang Yijun Qian Cheng Chen Yuchen Liu Lifeng Wang Joselito Razal Weiwei Lei | 2020 | Journal of Materiomics2020,6,1: | 1
An exploratory study on road tunnel with semi-transparent photovoltaic canopy-From energy saving and fire safety perspectives显示文摘Road tunnels consume a large amount of energy, especially in the Canadian cold climate, where the roads are heated electrically or deicing during the winter. For a more sustainable and resilient road tunnel energy system,we conducted an exploratory study on installing a semi-transparent photovoltaic(STPV)canopy at the entrances and exits of a tunnel under a river. The proposed system generates solar-powered electricity, improves thermal and visual conditions, and reduces energy loads. In this study, field measurements of road surface temperature and air temperature were conducted, and numerical simulations with and without STPV were performed to study air and road surface temperatures under different traffic speeds. The field measurements show the road surface temperatures are higher than the air temperature on average. The interior air and road surface temperature were measured to be above 0°C,even though the outdoor temperature is far below 0°C,thus significantly reducing the need for deicing in winter using salts. The simulations show that the air and surface temperatures elevate due to the solar transmission heat through the STPV canopy, thus reducing deicing energy consumption significantly. The fire safety analysis also showed that the proposed system's top opening should be located near the tunnel entrance instead of the canopy entrance for better smoke exhaust during a fire. | Dahai Qi Senwen Yang Chang Shu Xin Zhang Liangzhu(Leon)Wang Andreas Athienitis | 2022 | Building Simulation2022,15,4: | 1
Two-dimensional Boron Nitride for Electronics and Energy Applications显示文摘Two-dimensional(2D)boron nitride(BN),the so-called“white graphene,”has demonstrated a great potential in various fields, particularly in electronics and energy,by utilizing its wide bandgap(~5.5 eV),superior thermal stability, high thermal conductance, chemical inertness, and outstanding dielectric properties. However,to further optimize the performances from the view of structure-property relationship, the determinative factors such as crystallite sizes, layer thickness, dispersibility, and surface functionalities should be precisely controlled and adjusted. Therefore,in this review, the synthesis and functionalization methods including“top-down”and“bottom-up”strategies,and non-covalent and covalent modifications for 2D BN are systematically classified and discussed at first, thus catering for the requirements of versatile applications. Then, the progresses of 2D BN applied in the fields of microelectronics such as fieldeffect transistors and dielectric capacitors, energy domains such as thermal energy management and conversion, and batteries and supercapacitors are summarized to highlight the importance of 2D BN.Notably, these contents not only contain the state-of-the-art 2D BN composites, but also bring the current novel design of 2D BN-based microelectronic units. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are proposed to better broaden the scope of this material. Therefore, this review will pave an all-around way for understanding, utilizing, and applying 2D BN in future electronics and energy applications. | Jiemin Wang Liangzhu Zhang Lifeng Wang Weiwei Lei Zhong-Shuai Wu | 2022 | Energy & Environmental Materials2022,5,1: | 1
Self-fueling ferroptosis-inducing microreactors based on p H-responsive Lipiodol Pickering emulsions enable transarterial ferro-embolization therapy显示文摘Lipiodol chemotherapeutic emulsions remain one of the main choices for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) via transarterial chemoembolization(TACE). However, the limited stability of Lipiodol chemotherapeutic emulsions would lead to rapid drug diffusion, which would reduce the therapeutic benefit and cause systemic toxicity of administrated chemotherapeutics. Therefore, the development of enhanced Lipiodol-based formulations is of great significance to enable effective and safe TACE treatment. Herein, a stable water-in-oil Lipiodol Pickering emulsion(LPE) stabilized by pH-dissociable calcium carbonate nanoparticles and hemin is prepared and utilized for efficient encapsulation of lipoxygenase(LOX). The obtained LOX-loaded CaCO_(3)&hemin-stabilized LPE(LHCa-LPE) showing greatly improved emulsion stability could work as a pH-responsive and self-fueling microreactor to convert polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs), a main component of Lipiodol, to cytotoxic lipid radicals through the cascading catalytic reaction driven by LOX and hemin, thus inducing ferroptosis of cancer cells. As a result, such LHCa-LPE upon transcatheter embolization can effectively suppress the progression of orthotopic N1S1 HCC in rats. This study highlights a concise strategy to prepare pH-responsive and stable LPE-based self-fueling microreactors, which could serve as bifunctional embolic and ferroptosis-inducing agents to enable proof-of-concept transarterial ferro-embolization therapy of HCC. | Chunjie Wang Lei Zhang Zhijuan Yang Dongxu Zhao Zheng Deng Jialu Xu Yumin Wu Yu Hao Ziliang Dong Liangzhu Feng Zhuang Liu | 2024 | National Science Review2024,11,1: | 0
Physio-chemical modeling of the NO_(x)-O_(3) photochemical cycle and the air pollutants’ reactive dispersion around an isolated building显示文摘A numerical physio-chemical model of the NO_(x)-O_(3) photochemical cycle in the near-wake region of an isolated residential/office building has been presented in this study. The investigation delves into the dispersion of reactive air pollutants through the lens of fluid phenomenology and its impact on chemical reactivity, formation, transport, deposition, and removal.Computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations were conducted for the ground-point-source(GES)and roof-pointsource(RES)scenarios.Results show that the Damköhler number(Da),which quantifies pollutants’physio-chemical timescales, displays a strong inverse proportionality with the magnitude and spread of NO–increasing Da reduces human exposure to the toxic NO and NO_(2) substantially. When different wind directions were considered, the dispersion range of NO exhibited varying shrinking directions as Da increased.Furthermore,as Da increases, the concentration ratio KNO_(2)/KNO_(x),which quantifies the production of NO_(2) resulting from NO depletion, forms sharp high-low gradients near emission sources. For GES,the dispersion pattern is governed by the fluid’s phenomenological features. For RES,the intoxicated area emanates from the building’s leading-edge,with the lack of shielding inhibiting pollutant interactions in the near-wake,resulting in scant physio-chemical coupling. The NO_(2)/NO_(x) distribution follows a self-similar,stratified pattern, exhibiting consistent layering gradients and attributing to the natural deposition of the already-reacted pollutants rather than in-situ reactions. In the end, building design guidelines have been proposed to reduce pedestrian and resident exposure to NO_(x)-O_(3). | Yunfei Fu Xisheng Lin Xing Zheng Liangzhu Wang Chun-Ho Liu Xuelin Zhang Cruz Y.Li K.T.Tse | 2023 | Building Simulation2023,16,9: | 0
CircR-ZC3HC1 mediates MiR-384-5p/SIRT1 axis to promote neuronal autophagy and relieves ischemic stroke显示文摘Objective:Circular RNAs(circRNAs)have been shown to involve in pathological processes of ischemic stroke(IS),including autophagy. This study was designed to explore the effect of circR-ZC3HC1 on neuronal autophagy in IS and the related mechanisms. Methods:Expression of circR-ZC3HC1 in blood samples of IS patients and healthy controls was detected.Hippocampal neurons were treated with oxygen and glucose deprivation(OGD)to establish IS in vitro model. The expression of LC3 and p62 and the number of autophagosomes were examined to evaluate the autophagy level of OGD induced neurons using western blotting and transmission electron microscope.Cell apoptosis rate and the expression of cleaved caspase-3,Bax,and Bcl-2 were assessed byflow cytometry and western blotting. The binding relationships among circR-ZC3HC1,miR-384-5p,and SIRT1 were predicted and verified. Results:Low expression of circR-ZC3HC1 was found in blood samples of IS patients and OGD-treated neurons.Overexpressed circR-ZC3HC1 or inhibited miR-384-5p expression promoted autophagy and inhibited apoptosis of OGD-treated neurons, which could be reversed by further 3-MA treatment.Mechanistically,circR-ZC3HC1 targeted miR-384-5p to mediate SIRT1 expression.miR-384-5p overexpression or SIRT1 knockdown in the presence of circR-ZC3HC1 overexpression in OGD-treated neurons lead to reduced autophagy and enhanced apoptosis.Conclusion:Collectively,circR-ZC3HC1 promoted neuronal autophagy to attenuate IS via miR-384-5p/SIRT1 axis. | MIN SHEN XIAOMAN XU GUANGLING SUN LIANGZHU WANG TAO YING HANG SU WEI WANG QINGHUA CAO ZHEZHE SUN | 2024 | BIOCELL2024,48,3: | 0
Wide grain 4,encoding an alpha-tubulin,regulates grain size by affecting cell expansion in rice显示文摘Rice is one of the three most important food crops in the world.Increasing rice yield is an effective way to ensure food security.Grain size is a key factor affecting rice yield;however, the genetic and molecular mechanisms regulating grain size have not been fully investigated. In this study,we identified a rice mutant, wide grain 4-D(wg4-D),that exhibited a significant increase in grain width and a decrease in grain length.Histological analysis demonstrated that WG4 affects cell expansion thereby regulating grain size.MutMap-based gene mapping and complementary transgenic experiments revealed that WG4 encodes an alpha-tubulin,OsTubA1.A SNP mutation in WG4 affected the arrangement of cortical microtubules and caused a wide-grain phenotype.WG4 is located in nuclei and cytoplasm and expressed in various tissues. Our results provide insights into the function of tubulin in rice and identifies novel targets the regulation of grain size in crop breeding. | Yi Liu Lianan Guo Guoli Qu Yang Xiang Xu Zhao Hua Yuan Ting Li Liangzhu Kang Shiwen Tang Bin Tu Bingtian Ma Yuping Wang Shigui Li Weilan Chen Peng Qin | 2023 | The Crop Journal2023,11,6: | 0
Development of a bioheat model for older people under hot and cold exposures显示文摘Physiological modeling is important to evaluate the effects of heat and cold conditions on people’s thermal comfort and health. Experimental studies have found that older people (above 65 year old) undergo age-related weakening changes in their physiology and thermoregulatory activities, which makes them more vulnerable to heat or cold exposure than average aged young adults. However, addressing the age-related changes by modeling has been challenging due to their wide variability among the older population. This study develops a two-node physiological model to predict the thermal response of older people. The model is built on a newly developed two-node model for average-age young adults by accounting for the age-related attenuation of thermoregulation and sensory delays in triggering thermoregulatory actions. A numerical optimization method is developed to compute the model parameter values based on selected benchmark data from the literature. The proposed model is further validated with published measurement data covering large input ranges. The model predictions are in good agreement with the measurements in hot and cold exposure conditions with a discrepancy 0.60 °C for the mean skin temperature and of 0.30 °C for the core temperature. The proposed model can be integrated into building simulation tools to predict heat and cold stress levels and the associated thermal comfort for older people in built environments. | Lili Ji Abdelaziz Laouadi Liangzhu Wang Michael A.Lacasse | 2022 | Building Simulation2022,15,10: | 0
Numerical simulations of smoke spread during solar roof fires显示文摘As the installation of solar roofs increases,so has the concern over fires.Smoke from a solar roof fire could spread into a building through roof openings and presents a challenge for existing fire protection strategies. To date, there have been insufficient studies on solar roof fire-induced smoke spread. In this study,we conducted computational fluid dynamics(CDF)simulations using Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS)to better understand the mechanisms of solar roof fire-induced smoke spread and help with solar roof designs.First, the photovoltaic(PV)combustion model was created in FDS and validated by experimental data.A parametric study was then simulated to investigate the impacts of roof slopes and vent sizes on the smoke spread of the solar roofs. It was found that the roof slope has a significant effect on the fire smoke spread. As the roof slope increases, the region of separation, where the smoke and air are mixed, can extend from the leeward side of the building to the roof ridge. As a result, smoke could fill the attic and room more slowly, leading to a lower soot density and lower indoor temperature. When design a solar roof, both fire smoke protection and PV energy performance should be considered, especially for the low latitude regions where the PV optimal title angle regarding energy performance is small and leads to a higher risk of smoke infiltration. | Xin Zhang Monireh Aram Dahai Qi Liangzhu(Leon)Wang | 2022 | Building Simulation2022,15,4: | 0
Development of a Bayesian inference model for assessing ventilation condition based on CO_(2)meters in primary schools显示文摘Outdoor fresh air ventilation plays a significant role in reducing airborne transmission of diseases in indoor spaces.School classrooms are considerably challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the increasing need for in-person education, untimely and incompleted vaccinations, high occupancy density, and uncertain ventilation conditions. Many schools started to use CO_(2)meters to indicate air quality, but how to interpret the data remains unclear. Many uncertainties are also involved, including manual readings, student numbers and schedules, uncertain CO_(2)generation rates, and variable indoor and ambient conditions. This study proposed a Bayesian inference approach with sensitivity analysis to understand CO_(2)readings in four primary schools by identifying uncertainties and calibrating key parameters. The outdoor ventilation rate,CO_(2)generation rate, and occupancy level were identified as the top sensitive parameters for indoor CO_(2)levels.The occupancy schedule becomes critical when the CO_(2)data are limited, whereas a 15-min measurement interval could capture dynamic CO_(2)profiles well even without the occupancy information.Hourly CO_(2)recording should be avoided because it failed to capture peak values and overestimated the ventilation rates. For the four primary school rooms, the calibrated ventilation rate with a 95%confidence level for fall condition is 1.96±0.31 ACH for Room#1(165 m^(3)and 20 occupancies)with mechanical ventilation, and for the rest of the naturally ventilated rooms,it is 0.40±0.08 ACH for Room#2(236 m^(3)and 21 occupancies),0.30±0.04 or 0.79±0.06 ACH depending on occupancy schedules for Room#3(236 m^(3)and 19 occupancies),0.40±0.32,0.48±0.37,0.72±0.39 ACH for Room#4(231 m^(3)and 8–9 occupancies)for three consecutive days. | Danlin Hou Liangzhu(Leon)Wang Ali Katal Shujie Yan Liang(Grace)Zhou Vicky Wang Mark Vuotari Ethan Li Zihan Xie | 2023 | Building Simulation2023,16,1: | 0
Comparative Analysis of the Transcriptome and Metabolome in Leaves of Diploid and Tetraploid Fagopyrum tataricum显示文摘Tartary buckwheat(Fagopyrum tataricum)is a dual-purpose medicinal and food crop grown for its high contents of functional compounds and abundant nutrients.Although studies have shown the differences of total flavonoid content in Tartary buckwheat at different ploidy levels, the composition of flavonoid and its regulatory mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, the leaf metabolome and transcriptome of diploid and tetraploid accessions of Tartary buckwheat were analyzed to gain insight into the impact of polyploidization on comparative secondary metabolite composition and molecular regulatory mechanism.Based on a widely targeted metabolomics analysis,a total of 792 metabolites were identified, including 127 flavonoids. The accumulation of 127 metabolites and expression of 3871 genes differed significantly between diploid and tetraploid Tartary buckwheat.Integrated metabolomics and transcriptome analysis revealed that chromosome doubling up-regulated the expression of upstream genes in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway to promote the accumulation of flavonoids. The present results contribute to elucidation of the molecular mechanism of phenotypic variation associated with polyploidy in Tartary buckwheat. The findings provide a reference for further studies on phenotypic traits in polyploid Tartary buckwheat, the cloning of crucial regulatory genes, and utilization of genetic engineering technologies in the breeding of Tartary buckwheat. | Xiaodong Shi Yue Qi Liangzhu Lin Jia Wang Xiaobo Qin Bei Niu | 2023 | Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,11: | 0
