2Changes in Mean and Extreme Temperature and Precipitation over the Arid Region of Northwestern China: Observation and Projection显示文摘This paper reports a comprehensive study on the observed and projected spatiotemporal changes in mean and extreme climate over the arid region of northwestern China, based on gridded observation data and CMIP5 simulations under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The observational results reveal an increase in annual mean temperature since 1961, largely attributable to the increase in minimum temperature. The annual mean precipitation also exhibits a significant increasing tendency. The precipitation amount in the most recent decade was greater than in any preceding decade since 1961. Seasonally,the greatest increase in temperature and precipitation appears in winter and in summer, respectively. Widespread significant changes in temperature-related extremes are consistent with warming, with decreases in cold extremes and increases in warm extremes. The warming of the coldest night is greater than that of the warmest day, and changes in cold and warm nights are more evident than for cold and warm days. Extreme precipitation and wet days exhibit an increasing trend, and the maximum number of consecutive dry days shows a tendency toward shorter duration. Multi-model ensemble mean projections indicate an overall continual increase in temperature and precipitation during the 21 st century. 3Dust storms and loess accumulation on the Tibetan Plateau: A case study of dust event on 4 March 2003 in Lhasa显示文摘Whether the Tibetan Plateau is a significant dust source area is of great importance, because this is re-lated to the understanding of sources, accumulation and environmental effects of dusts on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Far East-Pacific Ocean regions as well as to the evolution of coupling of the Tibetan Plateau and atmosphere-ocean- continent exchange. Synoptic dynamics and remote sensing tracing of a dust storm on 3 to 5 March, 2003 in Lhasa on South Tibet demonstrate that the Tibetan Plateau possesses all factors and conditions of generating dust storms. Accom-panied with this dust storm is a strong ascending stream on the Plateau which has raised various sizes of dust particles into different levels. The lifted coarse particles were largely fallen down and accumulated as loess on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, and the fine particles were translated by the west-erly jet and subsided in the northern Pacific Ocean. The spa-tial-temporal distribution of dust-storms between years 1961 and 2000 on the Plateau shows that dust-storms mainly occur in winter and early spring with high frequency, and the path of dust storm moves gradually from south to north, which is closely coupled with the northward moving of the westerly jet from winter to spring over the Tibetan Plateau. 4Prediction of Primary Climate Variability Modes at the Beijing Climate Center显示文摘Climate variability modes, usually known as primary climate phenomena, are well recognized as the most important predictability sources in subseasonal–interannual climate prediction. This paper begins by reviewing the research and development carried out, and the recent progress made, at the Beijing Climate Center(BCC) in predicting some primary climate variability modes. These include the El Ni?o–Southern Oscillation(ENSO), Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO), and Arctic Oscillation(AO), on global scales, as well as the sea surface temperature(SST) modes in the Indian Ocean and North Atlantic, western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH), and the East Asian winter and summer monsoons(EAWM and EASM, respectively), on regional scales. Based on its latest climate and statistical models, the BCC has established a climate phenomenon prediction system(CPPS) and completed a hindcast experiment for the period 1991–2014. The performance of the CPPS in predicting such climate variability modes is systematically evaluated. The results show that skillful predictions have been made for ENSO, MJO, the Indian Ocean basin mode, the WPSH, and partly for the EASM, whereas less skillful predictions were made for the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD) and North Atlantic SST Tripole, and no clear skill at all for the AO, subtropical IOD, and EAWM. 5Re-Assessing Climatic Warming in China since 1900显示文摘The regional mean surface air temperature(SAT)in China has risen with a rate of 1.3–1.7℃(100 yr)^-1 since 1900,based on the recently developed homogenized observations.This estimate is larger than those[0.5–0.8℃(100 yr)^-1]adopted in the early National Reports of Climate Change in China.The present paper reviews the studies of the longterm SAT series of China,highlighting the homogenization of station observations as the key progress.The SAT series of China in early studies showed a prominent warm peak in the 1940s,mainly due to inhomogeneous records associated with site-moves of a number of stations from urban to outskirts in the early 1950s,thus leading to underestimates of the centennial warming trend.Parts of China were relatively warm around the 1940s but with differentphase interdecadal variations,while some parts were even relatively cool.This fact is supported by proxy data and could partly be explained by interdecadal changes in large-scale circulation.The effect of urbanization should have a minor contribution to the observed warming in China,although the estimates of such contributions for individual urban stations remain controversial.Further studies relevant to the present topic are discussed.Zhongwei YAN Yihui DING Panmao ZHAI Lianchun SONG Lijuan CAO Zhen LI 2020Journal of Meteorological Research2020,34,2:9
6Dust storm in Asia continent and its bio-environmental effects in the North Pacific: A case study of the strongest dust event in April, 2001 in central Asia显示文摘Testing the effects of iron fertilization in booming metabolism of microbes in North Pacific Ocean has become an important hot topic in current global climate change study. The first supportive evidence with natural iron inputs to ocean was ob-tained by Bishop and his colleagues at the PAPA re-gion in North Pacific Ocean. They found a rapid in-crease of marine phytoplankton over North Pacific Ocean after a strong dust storm in April 2001. We demonstrate that the dust deposition flux during this dust storm period decreases exponentially with in-creasing distance from the dust source regions along the dust transport pathway, through integration of synoptic dynamics, changes of TOMS-AI (aerosol index) and surface PM10 values along the dust pathway and changes of particulate organic carbon and chlorophyll in surface oceans. This strong dust storm may result in deposition of about 3.1—5.8 μg/m3 eolian iron into the PAPA region in North Pa-cific Ocean, thus causing a rapid increase of marine phytoplankton productivity observed by Bishop and his colleagues. 7The Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation Simulated by Four Chinese AGCMs Participating in the CMIP5 Project显示文摘The performances of four Chinese AGCMs participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5(CMIP5)in the simulation of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation(BSISO) are assessed. The authors focus on the major characteristics of BSISO: the intensity, significant period, and propagation. The results show that the four AGCMs can reproduce boreal summer intraseasonal signals of precipitation; however their limitations are also evident. Compared with the Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation(CMAP) data, the models underestimate the strength of the intraseasonal oscillation(ISO) over the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean(IO) during the boreal summer(May to October),but overestimate the intraseasonal variability over the western Pacific(WP). In the model results, the westward propagation dominates, whereas the eastward propagation dominates in the CMAP data. The northward propagation in these models is tilted southwest–northeast, which is also different from the CMAP result. Thus, there is not a northeast–southwest tilted rain belt revolution off the equator during the BSISO's eastward journey in the models. The biases of the BSISO are consistent with the summer mean state, especially the vertical shear. Analysis also shows that there is a positive feedback between the intraseasonal precipitation and the summer mean precipitation. 9Tropospheric Wet Refractivity Tomography Based on the BeiDou Satellite System显示文摘This paper presents a novel approach for assessing the precision of the wet refractivity field using BDS(BeiDou navigation satellite system) simulations only, GPS, and BDS+GPS for the Shenzhen and Hongkong GNSS network. The simulations are carried out by adding artificial noise to a real observation dataset. Instead of using the δ and σ parameters computed from slant wet delay, as in previous studies, we employ the Bias and RMS parameters, computed from the tomography results of total voxels, in order to obtain a more direct and comprehensive evaluation of the precision of the refractivity field determination. The results show that:(1) the precision of tropospheric wet refractivity estimated using BDS alone(only 9 satellites used) is basically comparable to that of GPS;(2) BDS+GPS(as of current operation) may not be able to significantly improve the data's spatial density for the application of refractivity tomography; and(3) any slight increase in the precision of refractivity tomography, particularly in the lower atmosphere, bears great significance for any applications dependent on the Chinese operational meteorological service.WANG Xiaoying WANG Xianliang DAI Ziqiang KE Fuyang CAO Yunchang WANG Feifei SONG Lianchun 2014Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2014,31,2:3
10Spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the fog regions in China显示文摘The spatial distribution and monthly/annual variation of foggy days in China are analyzed based on the monthly mean fog data collected from 604 observational stations for the period 1961–2000. Results show that there are six fog regions in China: the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, coastal areas, Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, eastern Gansu–Shaanxi region, Huaihe River valley, Tianshan mountainous area and northern Xinjiang. On the whole the interannual variation trend of foggy days is descending, especially an obvious decline after the 1980s. The areas where the foggy days have obvious tendency present a southwest-northeast direction. The rising trend regions alternate with descending trend regions, forming a SE-NW directional wave structure. In general, the number of foggy days in autumn and winter is larger than in spring and summer over most fog regions. 11Construction and Application of a Climate Risk Index for China显示文摘In the context of global warming,China is facing with increasing climate risks.It is imperative to develop quantitative indices to reflect the climate risks caused by extreme weather/climate events and adverse climatic conditions in association with different industries.Based on the observations at 2288 meteorological stations in China and the meteorological disasters data,a set of indices are developed to measure climate risks due to water-logging,drought,high temperature,cryogenic freezing,and typhoon.A statistical method is then used to construct an overall climate risk index(CRI)for China from these individual indices.There is a good correspondence between these indices and historical climatic conditions.The CRI,the index of water-logging by rain,and the high temperature index increase at a rate of 0.28,0.37,and 0.65 per decade,respectively,from 1961 to 2016.The cryogenic freezing index is closely related to changes in the consumer price index for food.The high temperature index is correlated with the consumption of energy and electricity.The correlation between the yearly growth in claims on household property insurance and the sum of the water-logging index and the typhoon index in the same year is as high as 0.70.Both the growth rate of claims on agricultural insurance and the annual growth rate of hospital inpatients are positively correlated with the CRI.The year-on-year growth in the number of domestic tourists is significantly negatively correlated with the CRI in the same year.More efforts are needed to develop regional CRIs.Yujie WANG Lianchun SONG Dianxiu YE Zhe WANG Rong GAO Xiucang LI Yizhou YIN Zunya WANG Yaoming LIAO 2018Journal of Meteorological Research2018,32,6:2

18A Possible Abrupt Change in Summer Precipitation over Eastern China around 2009显示文摘Historical studies have shown that summer rainfall in eastern China undergoes decadal variations,with three apparent changes in the late 1970s,1992,and the late 1990s.The present observational study indicates that summer precipitation over eastern China likely underwent a change in the late 2000s,during which the main spatial pattern changed from negative–positive–negative to positive–negative in the meridional direction.This change in summer precipitation over eastern China may have been associated with circulation anomalies in the middle/upper troposphere.A strong trough over Lake Baikal created a southward flow of cold air during 2009–15,compared with 1999–2008,while the westward recession of the western Pacific subtropical high strengthened the moisture transport to the north,creating conditions that were conducive for more rainfall in the north during this period.The phase shift of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation in the late 2000s led to the Pacific–Japan-type teleconnection wave train shifting from negative to positive phases,resulting in varied summer precipitation over eastern China.Yongjian REN Lianchun SONG Zunya WANG Ying XIAO Bing ZHOU 2017Journal of Meteorological Research2017,31,2:0
19Climate Services for Water Resource Management in China: The Case Study of Danjiangkou Reservoir显示文摘The efficiencies and effectiveness of water resource management are inextricably linked to climate services. This study demonstrates a climate information service for Danjiangkou Reservoir, which is the largest artificial lake in Asia, facing mounting challenges for flood control, water storage, and water diversion. Unlike traditional water resource management on the basis of short-term weather forecast and runoff monitoring, subseasonal to seasonal(S2S)and annual climate predictions as well as long-term climate change projections were well used to support the decision makers in Danjiangkou Reservoir. The National Climate Center(NCC) has projected the changes of future climate and extreme events by dynamically downscaling the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5(CMIP5)projections to 25-km resolution for the long-term planning of water resource management in Danjiangkou Reservoir.Real-time climate predictions based on climate models and downscaling interpretation and application methods at different timescales were also provided to meet the specific needs of earlier predictions and spatial refinement for the short-term diversion of the reservoir. Our results show that such climate services facilitated the Diversion Center of Danjiangkou Reservoir(DCDR) to reasonably control the operational water level, increased the ecological water supply to the northern portion of China by 844 million m^(3), and reduced as much as 1.67 billion m^(3) of abandoned water in 2019.
