2Pancreaticoduodenectomy: a comparison of superior approach with classical Whipple's technique显示文摘BACKGROUND: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is the standard procedure for resecting tumors arising from the periampullary area and the pancreatic head. Nevertheless this procedure is inherently difficult and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Besides, the technique applied for exposing the portal and superior mesenteric veins is time-consuming, difficult and associated with the risk of major venous injury. Recently we have introduced a modified approach for making this part of the procedure quick, safe and bloodless, which constitutes the subject of this study. METHODS: Patients who underwent pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD) either by superior approach technique (group 1) or by classical Whipple's technique (group 2) were retrospectively identified. Age-sex composition, body mass index (BMI), total operative time, operative blood loss, intraoperative blood transfusion requirement, morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stay were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Between January 1997 and December 2011, 72 patients underwent PPPD by the superior approach technique (group 1) and 38 underwent PPPD by the classical Whipple's technique (group 2) at our institution. Statistically significant differences were observed in operative time (208.1±46.3 minutes in group 1 vs 322.0±33.8 minutes in group 2), operative blood loss (601.0±250.3 mL in group 1 vs 1371.5±471.8 mL in group 2), and intraoperative blood transfusion requirement [10 (13.9%) patients in group 1 and 24 (63.2%) in group 2]. Among 18 (16.4%) obese patients, significant differences in operativetime, operative blood loss and intraoperative blood transfusion requirement were observed between groups 1 and 2. There was no significant inter-group difference in complication rate among obese patients, but comparing obese patients with normal weight patients revealed higher rates of complications like pancreatic fistula (27.8% vs 6.5%), delayed gastric emptying (16.7% vs 5.4%), and infective complications like wound infection and intra abdominal collection (44.4% vs 5.4%). CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of analytical data, we conclude that the superior approach technique is effective for PD compared with the classical Whipple's technique. It allows fast, safe and virtually bloodless dissection for exposure of the superior mesenteric and portal veins during early steps of PD. 3Polymer electrolyte with composite cathode for solid-state Li–CO_2 battery显示文摘The rechargeable Li–CO_2 battery has attracted much attention for energy storage because of the high energy density and efficient utilization of greenhouse gas.However, it's still suffered by low safety issue of liquid electrolyte. Herein, a composite cathode consisting of CNTs and polymer electrolytes was fabricated by the insitu polymerization process for the polymer electrolytebased solid-state Li–CO_2 batteries. With the good dispersion of CNTs and polymer electrolyte, the composite cathode is covered by film-like discharge products Li_2CO_3.Furthermore, the Li–CO_2 battery shows high reversible capacity(~11,000 mAh·g^(-1)), excellent cycle stability(1000 mAh·g^(-1) for 100 cycles) under low charge potential(<4.5 V), and outstanding rate performances at room temperature, which are much better than those of liquid electrolyte-based battery. 5Chemical characteristics,oxidative potential,and sources of PM_(2.5)in wintertime in Lahore and Peshawar,Pakistan显示文摘The chemical characteristics,oxidative potential,and sources of PM_(2.5)were analyzed at the urban sites of Lahore and Peshawar,Pakistan in February 2019.Carbonaceous species,water soluble ions,and metal elements were measured to investigate the chemical composition and sources of PM_(2.5).The dithiothreitol(DTT)consumption rate was measured to evaluate the oxidative potential of PM_(2.5).Both cities showed a high exposure risk of PM_(2.5)regarding its oxidative potential(DTT v).Carbonaceous and some of the elemental species of PM_(2.5)correlated well with DTT v in both Lahore and Peshawar.Besides,the DTT v of PM_(2.5)in Lahore showed significant positive correlation with most of the measured water soluble ions,however,ions were DTT-inactive in Peshawar.Due to the higher proportions of carbonaceous species and metal elements,Peshawar showed higher mass-normalized DTT activity of PM_(2.5)compared to Lahore although the average PM_(2.5)concentration in Peshawar was lower.The high concentrations of toxic metals also posed serious non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to the residents of both cities.Principle component analysis coupled with multiple linear regression was applied to investigate different source contributions to PM_(2.5)and its oxidative potential.Mixed sources of traffic and road dust resuspension and coal combustion,direct vehicle emission,and biomass burning and formation of secondary aerosol were identified as the major sources of PM_(2.5)in both cities.The findings of this study provide important data for evaluation of the potential health risks of PM_(2.5)and for formulation of efficient control strategies in major cities of Pakistan.Mushtaq Ahmad Qing Yu Jing Chen Siming Cheng Weihua Qin Yuepeng Zhang 2021Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,4:4

7Neuroprotective effects of berry fruits on neurodegenerative diseases显示文摘Recent clinical research has demonstrated that berry fruits can prevent age-related neurodegenerative diseases and improve motor and cognitive functions. The berry fruits are also capable of modulating signaling pathways involved in inflammation, cell survival, neurotransmission and enhancing neuroplasticity. The neuroprotective effects of berry fruits on neurodegenerative diseases are related to phytochemicals such as anthocyanin, caffeic acid, catechin, quercetin, kaempferol and tannin. 8Morpho-Physiological,Biochemical and Molecular Adaptation of Millets to Abiotic Stresses:A Review显示文摘Abiotic stresses such as drought,heat,cold,nutrient deficiency,excess salt and hazardous metals can hamper plantgrowth and development.Intensive agriculture of only a few major staple food crops that are sensitive and intolerant to environmental stresses has led to an agrarian crisis.On the other hand,nutritionally rich,gluten free and stress tolerant plants like millets are neglected and underutilized.Millets sustain about one-third of the world’s population and show exceptional tolerance to various abiotic and biotic stresses.Millets are C4 plants that are adapted to marginal and dry lands of arid and semi-arid regions,and survive low rainfall and poor soils.Abiotic stresses significantly affect plant growth which ultimately results in reduced crop yields.However,various adaptation mechanisms have evolved in millets to withstand different stresses.This review aims at exploring various of these morphophysiological,biochemical and molecular aspects of mechanisms in millets.Morphological adaptations include short life span,smallplant height and leaf area,dense root system,adjusted flowering time,increased root and decreased shoot lengths,high tillering,and leaf folding.A high accumulation of various osmoprotectants(proline,soluble sugars,proteins)improves hyperosmolarity and enhances the activity of antioxidant enzymes(e.g.,Ascorbate peroxidase,Superoxide dismutase,Catalase,Peroxidase)providing defense against oxidative damage.Physiologically,plants show low photosynthetic and stomatal conductance rates,and root respiration which help them to escape from water stress.Molecular adaptations include the upregulation of stress-related transcriptional factors,signalling genes,ion transporters,secondary metabolite pathways,receptor kinases,phytohormone biosynthesis and antioxidative enzymes.Lack of genetic resources hampers improvement of millets.However,several identified and characterized genes for stress tolerance can be exploited for further development of millet resilience.This will provide them with an extra characteristic plant resistance to withstand environmental pressures,besides their excellent nutritional value over the conventional staple crops like rice,wheat and maize.Seerat Saleem Naveed Ul Mushtaq Wasifa Hafiz Shah Aadil Rasool Khalid Rehman Hakeem Reiaz Ul Rehman 2021Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,5:2
9Delineating Key Determinants of Domestic Fuelwood Consumption of Rural Households in Western Himalaya-Policy Implications显示文摘A study was carried out in district Samba of Western Himalayan province of Jammu and Kashmir of India.The data were collected in an interview schedule in personal interview with 180 household heads.The association between the level of fuelwood consumption(low versus high consumption) and different factors,each individually,was investigated using chi-square test of association at 0.001 level of significance.It was found that out of 25 socio-economic,biophysical and alternate fuel factors,15 factors(each individually) significantly influenced the domestic fuelwood consumption.Logistic regression models of alternate fuel use,social,economic and biophysical factors were developed to identify key variables influencing fuelwood consumption levels within each respective category.A composite model was also developed to identify key factors when all variables in all the pre-said categories were considered simultaneously.Surprisingly,in contrast to expectation the model with alternate fuel use did not provide a good fit.The biophysical model also did not provide a good fit.The economic and composite models were the same with equal level of accuracy of predication.This implies that economic aspects,rather than the availability of alternate fuels,dominate fuelwood consumption levels of rural households.Strategies to increase the exposure of the head of household to outside world needs to formulated to reduce the domestic fuelwood consumption levels.Households nearer to state forests are to be educated about efficient use of fuelwood and be encouraged to intensify use of Liquified Petroleum Gas.The wider implications of study are:the availability of alternate fuels is not a necessary condition to decrease household level domestic fuelwood consumption.Economic factors needs to be considered in designing strategies to reduce fuelwood consumption.Increased employment opportunities would increase the opportunity cost of fuelwood collection and this would reduce its use.MUSHTAQ Tahir SOOD Kamal Kishor PESHIN Rajinder 2014Journal of Mountain Science2014,11,1:2
10Enhanced catalytic degradation of organic pollutants by multi-stimuli activated multiferroic nanoarchitectures显示文摘Smart catalysts that can simultaneously utilize multiple energy sources will have a significant positive impact on the inefficiencies of conventional environmental remediation approaches,and will address their high energy demands.In this work,we have manufactured multiferroic magnetoelectric photocatalysts that can be simultaneously activated using multiple energy sources for the degradation of organic pollutants.The catalysts are composed of CoFe2O4@BiFeO3(CFO@BFO)nanooctahedrons(NOs),CFO@BFO nanocubes(NCs),and CFO@BFO nanowires(NWs),and were successful in harnessing energy from three different energy sources,including UV-vis light,acoustically mediated mechanical vibrations and magnetic fields.The CFO@BFO NOs displayed the most enhanced degradation,reaching 93%,96%,and 99%degradation of RhB dye within 1 h under light,ultrasound,and magnetic fields,respectively.When these energy sources were used simultaneously,significantly increased reaction rates were observed compared to the single-energy source stimulation.Results of radical trapping experiments indicate that radical species i.e.,OH·and O2·^-play a dominant role in catalytic degradation of organic pollutant,RhB,under all three stimuli.These results will contribute significantly to the development of new environmental technologies that are highly versatile in nature and able to adapt to changing environments to deliver efficient environmental remediation.Fajer Mushtaq Xiangzhong Chen Harun Torlakcik Bradley JNelson Salvador Pané 2020Nano Research2020,13,8:2
11Sinapic acid ameliorates D-galactosamine/lipopolysaccharideinduced fulminant hepatitis in rats:Role of nuclear factor erythroidrelated factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 pathways显示文摘BACKGROUND Sinapic acid(SA)has been shown to have various pharmacological properties such as antioxidant,antifibrotic,anti-inflammatory,and anticancer activities.Its mechanism of action is dependent upon its ability to curb free radical production and protect against oxidative stress-induced tissue injuries.AIM To study the hepatoprotective effects of SA against lipopolysaccharide(LPS)/Dgalactosamine(D-GalN)-induced acute liver failure(ALF)in rats.METHODS Experimental ALF was induced with an intraperitoneal(i.p.)administration of 8μg LPS and 800 mg/kg D-GalN in normal saline.SA was administered orally once daily starting 7 d before LPS/D-GalN treatment.RESULTS Data showed that SA ameliorates acute liver dysfunction,decreases serum levels of alanine transaminase(ALT),and aspartate aminotransferase(AST),as well as malondialdehyde(MDA)and NO levels in ALF model rats.However,pretreatment with SA(20 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg)reduced nuclear factor kappalight-chain-enhancer of activated B cells(NF-κB)activation and levels of inflammatory cytokines(tumor necrosis factor-αand interleukin 6).Also,SA increased the activity of the nuclear factor erythroid-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1(Nrf2/HO-1)signaling pathway.CONCLUSION In conclusion,SA offers significant protection against LPS/D-GalN-induced ALF in rats by upregulating Nrf2/HO-1 and downregulating NF-κB.Mushtaq Ahmad Ansari Mohammad Raish Yousef A Bin Jardan Ajaz Ahmad Mudassar Shahid SheikhFayaz Ahmad Nazrul Haq Mohammad Rashid Khan Saleh A Bakheet 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,7:2

13Overview of purple blotch disease and understanding its management through chemical, biological and genetic approaches显示文摘Purple blotch disease of Allium spp. crops caused by Alternaria porri has remained a major concern in agriculture for both farmers and research fraternity as it severely damages the crops and drastically reduces the yield. The symptoms appear after 1–4 days of infection and bulb rot begin, and eventually turn into dark reddish-purple and then brownish/black lesions. Many factors like season, time of sowing, humidity and temperature, stage of crop, and plant architecture have a huge impact on the progression of purple blotch disease. Many genic markers based on amplification of an Alta1 gene sequence have been designed for identification and differentiation of different Alternaria species groups. Among the most commonly used fungicides, mancozeb, tebuconazole, difenaconazole and azoxystrobin were found to be the ideal for the management of purple blotch disease and increased garlic yield. Many biological approaches such as plant extracts and bio-control agents were found partially effective for controlling the disease. A report on QTL mapping for purple blotch resistance discovered that purple blotch resistance is controlled by a single dominant gene ApR1. To completely understand the purple blotch disease resistance for crop improvement, a study is required at transcriptome level for hunting purple blotch resistant genes by gene annotation and mining.
