| 1 | National Forest Inventories capture the multifunctionality of managed forests in Germany显示文摘Background:Forests perform various important ecosystem functions that contribute to ecosystem services.In many parts of the world,forest management has shifted from a focus on timber production to multi-purpose forestry,combining timber production with the supply of other forest ecosystem services.However,it is unclear which forest types provide which ecosystem services and to what extent forests primarily managed for timber already supply multiple ecosystem services.Based on a comprehensive dataset collected across 150 forest plots in three regions differing in management intensity and species composition,we develop models to predict the potential supply of 13 ecosystem services.We use those models to assess the level of multifunctionality of managed forests at the national level using national forest inventory data.Results:Looking at the potential supply of ecosystem services,we found trade-offs(e.g.between both bark beetle control or dung decomposition and both productivity or soil carbon stocks)as well as synergies(e.g.for temperature regulation,carbon storage and culturally interesting plants)across the 53 most dominant forest types in Germany.No single forest type provided all ecosystem services equally.Some ecosystem services showed comparable levels across forest types(e.g.decomposition or richness of saprotrophs),while others varied strongly,depending on forest structural attributes(e.g.phosphorous availability or cover of edible plants)or tree species composition(e.g.potential nitrification activity).Variability in potential supply of ecosystem services was only to a lesser extent driven by environmental conditions.However,the geographic variation in ecosystem function supply across Germany was closely linked with the distribution of main tree species.Conclusions:Our results show that forest multifunctionality is limited to subsets of ecosystem services.The importance of tree species composition highlights that a lack of multifunctionality at the stand level can be compensated by managing forests at the landscape level,when stands of complementary forest types are combined.These results imply that multi-purpose forestry should be based on a variety of forest types requiring coordinated planning across larger spatial scales. | Nadja K.Simons María R.Felipe-Lucia Peter Schall Christian Ammer Jürgen Bauhus Nico Blüthgen Steffen Boch François Buscot Markus Fischer Kezia Goldmann Martin M.Gossner Falk Hänsel Kirsten Jung Peter Manning Thomas Nauss Yvonne Oelmann Rodica Pena Andrea Polle Swen C.Renner Michael Schloter Ingo Schöning Ernst-Detlef Schulze Emily F.Solly Elisabeth Sorkau Barbara Stempfhuber Tesfaye Wubet Jörg Müller Sebastian Seibold Wolfgang W.Weisser | 2021 | Forest Ecosystems2021,8,1: | 2 |

| 8 | High rate of complete histopathological response in hepatocellular carcinoma patients after combined transarterial chemoembolization and stereotactic body radiation therapy显示文摘BACKGROUND Liver transplantation(LT)presents a curative treatment option in patients with early stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)who are not eligible for resection or ablation therapy.Due to a risk of up 30%for waitlist drop-out upon tumor progression,bridging therapies are used to halt tumor growth.Transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)and less commonly stereotactic body radiation therapy(SBRT)or a combination of TACE and SBRT,are used as bridging therapies in LT.However,it remains unclear if one of those treatment options is superior.The analysis of explant livers after transplantation provides the unique opportunity to investigate treatment response by histopathology.AIM To analyze histopathological response to a combination of TACE and SBRT in HCC in comparison to TACE or SBRT alone.METHODS In this multicenter retrospective study,27 patients who received liver transplantation for HCC were analyzed.Patients received either TACE or SBRT alone,or a combination of TACE and SBRT as bridging therapy to liver transplantation.Liver explants of all patients who received at least one TACE and/or SBRT were analyzed for the presence of residual vital tumor tissue by histopathology to assess differences in treatment response to bridging therapies.Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test,Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney-U tests.RESULTS Fourteen patients received TACE only,four patients SBRT only,and nine patients a combination therapy of TACE and SBRT.There were no significant differences between groups regarding age,sex,etiology of underlying liver disease or number and size of tumor lesions.Strikingly,analysis of liver explants revealed that almost all patients in the TACE and SBRT combination group(8/9,89%)showed no residual vital tumor tissue by histopathology,whereas TACE or SBRT alone resulted in significantly lower rates of complete histopathological response(0/14,0%and 1/4,25%,respectively,P value<0.001).CONCLUSION Our data suggests that a combination of TACE and SBRT increases the rate of complete histopathological response compared to TACE or SBRT alone in bridging to liver transplantation. | Ulrike Bauer Sabine Gerum Falk Roeder Stefan Münch Stephanie E Combs Alexander B Philipp Enrico N De Toni Martha M Kirstein Arndt Vogel Carolin Mogler Bernhard Haller Jens Neumann Rickmer F Braren Marcus R Makowski Philipp Paprottka Markus Guba Fabian Geisler Roland M Schmid Andreas Umgelter Ursula Ehmer | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,24: | 1 |

| 13 | Recirculating IL-1R2^(+) Tregs fine-tune intrathymic Treg development under inflammatory conditions显示文摘The vast majority of Foxp3^(+)regulatory T cells(Tregs)are generated in the thymus,and several factors,such as cytokines and unique thymic antigen-presenting cells,are known to contribute to the development of these thymus-derived Tregs(tTregs).Here,we report the existence of a specific subset of Foxp3^(+)Tregs within the thymus that is characterized by the expression of IL-1R2,which is a decoy receptor for the inflammatory cytokine IL-1.Detailed flow cytometric analysis of the thymocytes from Foxp3^(hCD2)xRAG1^(GFP) reporter mice revealed that the IL-1R2^(+)Tregs are mainly RAG1^(GFP-)and CCR6^(+)CCR7^(-),demonstrating that these Tregs are recirculating cells entering the thymus from the periphery and that they have an activated phenotype.In the spleen,the majority of IL-1R2^(+)Tregs express neuropilin-1(Nrp-1)and Helios,suggesting a thymic origin for these Tregs.Interestingly,among all tissues studied,the highest frequency of IL-1R2^(+)Tregs was observed in the thymus,indicating preferential recruitment of this Treg subset by the thymus.Using fetal thymic organ cultures(FTOCs),we demonstrated that increased concentrations of exogenous IL-1β blocked intrathymic Treg development resulting in a decreased frequency of CD25^(+)Foxp3^(+)tTregs and an accumulation of CD25^(+)Foxp3^(-)Treg precursors.Interestingly,the addition of IL-1R2^(+)Tregs,but not IL-1R2^(+)Tregs,to reaggregated thymic organ cultures(RTOCs)abrogated the IL-1β-mediated blockade,demonstrating that these recirculating IL-1R2^(+)Tregs can quench IL-1 signaling in the thymus and thereby maintain thymic Treg development even under inflammatory conditions. | Eirini Nikolouli Yassin Elfaki Susanne Herppich Carsten Schelmbauer Michael Delacher Christine Falk Ilgiz A.Mufazalov Ari Waisman Markus Feuerer Jochen Huehn | 2021 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,1: | 0 |
