2Regional applicability of seven meteorological drought indices in China显示文摘The definition of a drought index is the foundation of drought research.However,because of the complexity of drought,there is no a unified drought index appropriate for different drought types and objects at the same time.Therefore,it is crucial to determine the regional applicability of various drought indices.Using terrestrial water storage obtained from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment,and the observed soil moisture and streamflow in China,we evaluated the regional applicability of seven meteorological drought indices:the Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI),modified PDSI(PDSI_CN) based on observations in China,self-calibrating PDSI(scPDSI),Surface Wetness Index(SWI),Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI),Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI),and soil moisture simulations conducted using the community land model driven by observed atmospheric forcing(CLM3.5/ObsFC).The results showed that the scPDSI is most appropriate for China.However,it should be noted that the scPDSI reduces the value range slightly compared with the PDSI and PDSI_CN;thus,the classification of dry and wet conditions should be adjusted accordingly.Some problems might exist when using the PDSI and PDSI_CN in humid and arid areas because of the unsuitability of empiricalparameters.The SPI and SPEI are more appropriate for humid areas than arid and semiarid areas.This is because contributions of temperature variation to drought are neglected in the SPI,but overestimated in the SPEI,when potential evapotranspiration is estimated by the Thornthwaite method in these areas.Consequently,the SPI and SPEI tend to induce wetter and drier results,respectively.The CLM3.5/ObsFC is suitable for China before 2000,but not for arid and semiarid areas after 2000.Consistent with other drought indices,the SWI shows similar interannual and decadal change characteristics in detecting annual dry/wet variations.Although the long-term trends of drought areas in China detected by these seven drought indices during 1961-2013 are consistent,obvious differences exist among the values of drought areas,which might be attributable to the definitions of the drought indices in addition to climatic change.YANG Qing LI MingXing ZHENG ZiYan MA ZhuGuo 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,4:21

4Modeling spatial and temporal variations in soil moisture in China显示文摘On the basis of station observations,an atmospheric field (ObsFC) was constructed for the Community Land Model version 3.5 (CLM3.5).The model (CLM3.5 driven with ObsFC,hereafter referred as to CLM3.5/ObsFC) was used to simulate soil moisture (SM) from 1951 to 2008 in China.The resulting SM was compared with in situ observations,remote-sensing data and estimations made by various land models,indicating that CLM3.5/ObsFC is capable of reproducing the temporospatial characteristics and long-term variation trends of SM over China.Using an in situ observation-based forcing field improves the simulation of SM.Analysis of SM simulated using CLM3.5/ObsFC shows that the overall spatial pattern of SM was characterized by a gradually decreasing and alternating distribution of arid-humid zones from the southeast to northwest.Regionally averaged SM was the driest over southern Xinjiang Province and western Inner Mongolia,while the most humid regions were located over the Northeast Plain,Jianghuai region and the Yangtze River basin.The long-term variation trends of SM were generally characterized by increases in arid and humid regions and decreases in semiarid regions.Moreover,the variation was relatively intense from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s in the arid region.The time series was more stable in the humid region except for a period near 1970 and after the year 2003.A downward trend was most prominent in the semiarid region from the 1990s to the end of the time series.For 1951-2008,in the arid,semiarid and humid regions,the SM volume percentage changed by 2.35,-1.26 and 0.08,respectively.The variation trends and intensity remarkably differed among the different regions,with the most notable changes being over the arid and semiarid regions north of 35°N.LI MingXing MA ZhuGuo NIU Guo-Yue 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,17:17
5Soil moisture drought detection and multi-temporal variability across China显示文摘Soil moisture droughts can trigger abnormal changes of material and energy cycles in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system,leading to important effects on local ecosystem,weather,and climate.Drought detection and understanding benefit disaster alleviation,as well as weather and climate predictions based on the understanding the land-atmosphere interactions.We thus simulated soil moisture using land surface model CLM3.5 driven with observed climate in China,and corrected wet bias in soil moisture simulations via introducing soil porosity parameter into soil water parameterization scheme.Then we defined soil moisture drought to quantify spatiotemporal variability of droughts.Over the period from 1951 to 2008,40%of months(to the sum of 12×58)underwent droughts,with the average area of 54.6%of total land area of China's Mainland.The annual monthly drought numbers presented a significant decrease in arid regions,but a significant increase in semi-arid and semi-humid regions,a decrease in humid regions but not significant.The Mainland as a whole experienced an increasing drought trend,with77.3%of areal ratio of decrease to increase.The monthly droughts in winter were the strongest but the weakest in summer,impacting 54.3%and 8.4%total area of the Mainland,respectively.The drought lasting three months or more occurred mainly in the semi-arid and semi-humid regions,with probability>51.7%,even>77.6%,whereas those lasting 6 and 12 months or more impacted mainly across arid and semi-arid regions.LI MingXing MA ZhuGuo 2015Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,10:13
6Soil moisture-based study of the variability of dry-wet climate and climate zones in China显示文摘An ensemble soil moisture dataset was produced from 11 of 25 global climate model (GCM) simulations for two climate scenarios spanning 1900 to 2099; this dataset was based on an evaluation of the spatial correlation of means and trends in reference to soil moisture simulations conducted using the community land model driven by observed atmospheric forcing. Using the ensemble soil moisture index, we analyzed the dry-wet climate variability and the dynamics of the climate zone boundaries in China over this 199-year period. The results showed that soil moisture increased in the typically arid regions, but with insignificant trends in the humid regions; furthermore, the soil moisture exhibited strong oscillations with significant drought trends in the transition zones between arid and humid regions. The dynamics of climate zone boundaries indicated that the expansion of semiarid regions and the contraction of semi-humid regions are typical characteristics of the dry-wet climate variability for two scenarios in China. During the 20th century, the total area of semiarid regions expanded by 11.5% north of 30°N in China, compared to the average area for 1970-1999, but that of semi-humid regions decreased by approximately 9.8% in comparison to the average for the period of 1970-1999, even though the transfer area of the humid to the semi-humid regions was taken into account. 7Assessment of an Evapotranspiration Deficit Drought Index in Relation to Impacts on Ecosystems显示文摘Ecosystems have increasingly been subject to the challenge of heavy drought under global warming. To quantitatively evaluate the impacts of drought on ecosystems, it is necessary to develop a drought index that can sensitively depict the response of vegetation to drought evolution at a biological time scale. For the ability of direct connection between climate and ecosystem by deficit of evapotranspiration, in the present study, a drought index was defined based on standardized evapotranspiration deficit (SEDI), according to the difference between actual and potential evapotranspiration, to meet the need for highlighting drought impacts on ecological processes. Comparisons with traditional indices show that SEDI can reasonably detect droughts and climatic dry and wet transitions, especially at a monthly time scale, and can also regenerate long-term trends. Moreover, SEDI can more sensitively capture the biological changes of ecosystems in response to the dynamics of drought intensity, compared with the indices of precipitation and temperature. SEDI is more practical than the precipitation and temperature indices to highlight signals of biological effects in climate droughts. 9Efficacy and safety of Reduqing granules in the treatment of common cold with wind-heat syndrome: a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, positive-controlled trial显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To assess the efficacy and safety of Reduqing granules in patients with common cold with wind-heat syndrome(CCWHS).METHODS:A randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel, positive-controlled trial included 72 CCWHS patients was performed.The participants were randomly assigned to two groups,Reduqing(RDQ) group and Lianhuaqingwen(LHQW) group, in a 1∶1 ratio.Patients in RDQ group received Reduqing granules and dummy Lianhuaqingwen capsules three times a day and patients in LHQW group received Lianhuaqingwen capsules and dummy Reduqing granules three times daily.The duration of treatment and follow-up were four days.RESULTS:There were no statistically significant differences in total markedly effective rate and total effective rate between RDQ group and LHQW group after treatment.Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) symptom score was significantly reduced after treatment in RDQ group, as well as in LHQW group.However, the difference of change in TCM symptom score between two groups was not statistically significant(P > 0.05).There were no significant differences between two groups in the median time to fever relief [RDQ group(4 ± 8) h vs LHQW group(4 ± 5) h] or the median time to fever clearance(RDQ group 47 h vs LHQW 36 h).No serious adverse events were reported during the study.CONCLUSION:Compared with Lianhuaqingwen capsules, Reduqing granules achieved similar therapeutic effect in the treatment of CCWHS and no drug-related adverse events were reported during the study.Therefore, Reduqing granules might be effective and safe in the treatment of CCWHS.Ma Yanjiao Zhang Zhongyi Wei Lianbo He Shuai Deng Xun Ji Aimin Zhou Benjie Jiang Deqi Li Mingxing Wang Yong 2017Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2017,37,2:5

11A confinement strategy to in-situ prepare a peanut-like N-doped, C-wrapped TiO_(2) electrode with an enhanced desalination capacity and rate for capacitive deionization显示文摘Capacitive deionization(CDI)technology has been considered a promising desalination technique,especially for brackish water,because of its relatively low energy consumption,facile operation,and easy regeneration of electrodes.However,the desalination capacity,cost,fabrication method,electrochemical stability,and environmental unfriendliness of the electrodes have restricted the practical application of the CDI technique.Herein,we reported the one-step in situ preparation of nitrogen-doped and carbon-decorated MXene-derived TiO_(2)(termed N-TiO_(2−x)/C)through the confinement-growth strategy.The small particle size(∼25 nm)and uniform distribution of a peanut-like N-TiO_(2−x)/C material could be ascribed to the confined growth space created by the nanoporous structure of melamine foam.The defects produced by N doping provide an enhanced electrical conductivity and more adsorption sites,while wrapping with a carbon shell layer increases the conductivity and offers protection for N-TiO_(2−x) to achieve an excellent electrochemical stability.The prepared N-TiO_(2−x)/C electrode is hydrophilic due to the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups(e.g.,C-O,N-Ti-O,-NO_(x),and-OH)and exhibits a high salt removal capacity(33.4 mg·g^(−1)),desalination rate(1.5 mg·g^(−1)·min^(−1)),and remarkable cycling stability(without declining after 100 cycles),which might be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the short ion diffusion path,more active adsorption sites,enhanced conductivity,pseudocapacitive behavior,and protection of the carbon shell layer.This work provides a confined-growth strategy to develop MXene-derived oxide electrodes for electrochemical desalination.Mingxing Liang Xueting Bai Fei Yu Jie Ma 2021Nano Research2021,14,3:5
12Has the stilling of the surface wind speed ended in China?显示文摘Since the 1960 s,the global land surface wind speed(SWS)has significantly weakened,a phenomenon known as global terrestrial stilling.The latest research found that the stilling reversed around 2010,and since then the global SWS has been strengthening.However,there is still a lack of systematic quantitative analysis in China.We analyzed the transition and regional differences in the long-term trends of the SWS in China based on observational SWS data from 1971 to 2019.The results showed that annual mean SWS in China underwent a reversal from a continuously weakening trend to a significantly strengthening trend around 2014 and implying that stilling may have ended in 2014.The reversal had obvious regional and seasonal variations.In Northeast China,Western Xinjiang as well as on the Tibetan Plateau,the years with both annual and seasonal mean SWS changing from weakening to strengthening were around 2013/2014,1993/1994,and 2000.However,in the west of North China,SWS showed an obviously strengthening trend only in autumn and winter after 2007;while only autumn mean SWS showed a strengthening trend after 2012 in South China.It should be noted that stilling is ongoing in the eastern and southern coastal areas,North China and Eastern Xinjiang.Qing YANG Mingxing LI Ziqing ZU Zhuguo MA 2021Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,7:4
13Identifying EGFR-Expressed Cells and Detecting EGFR Multi-Mutations at Single-Cell Level by Microfluidic Chip显示文摘EGFR mutations companion diagnostics have been proved to be crucial for the efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeted cancer therapies. To uncover multiple mutations occurred in minority of EGFR-mutated cells,which may be covered by the noises from majority of unmutated cells, is currently becoming an urgent clinical requirement. Here we present the validation of a microfluidic-chip-based method for detecting EGFR multimutations at single-cell level. By trapping and immunofluorescently imaging single cells in specifically designed silicon microwells, the EGFR-expressed cellswere easily identified. By in situ lysing single cells, the cell lysates of EGFR-expressed cells were retrieved without cross-contamination. Benefited from excluding the noise from cells without EGFR expression, the simple and cost-effective Sanger's sequencing, but not the expensive deep sequencing of the whole cell population, was used to discover multi-mutations. We verified the new method with precisely discovering three most important EGFR drugrelated mutations from a sample in which EGFR-mutated cells only account for a small percentage of whole cell population. The microfluidic chip is capable of discovering not only the existence of specific EGFR multi-mutations,but also other valuable single-cell-level information: on which specific cells the mutations occurred, or whether different mutations coexist on the same cells. 14Reflections on the Catastrophic 2020 Yangtze River Basin Flooding in Southern China显示文摘During the summer of 2020,southern China suffered from catastrophic flooding,the massive basin flood mainly occurred in the Yangtze River's middle and lower reaches.As of July 20,2020,the cumulative precipitation since the rain season started exceeded 500 mm over most of the Yangtze River Basin,reaching>1,200 mm in some areas of the lower reaches,exceeding the same period in 1998,the severest flood year in the past 60 years.Several water gauge stations at Poyang Lake and Chaohu Lake exceeded their historical record values.The water levels in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River were among the highest ever recorded.As of July 22,2020,45.5 million people had been affected by the floods,with 142 people having died or were missing,and the direct economic losses expected to be around 116 billion RMB(~16.5 billion US dollars).However,the losses from this flood are much lower than those of previous major floods.For example,the catastrophic 1998 flooding led to 1,526 deaths and economic losses of 255 billion RMB(~36.4 billion US dollars).The reasons behind this are worthy of further study and discussion,and may be used for reference in the future and for other countries.Ke Wei Chaojun Ouyang Hongtao Duan Yunliang Li Mingxing Chen Jiao Ma Huicong An Shu Zhou 2020The Innovation2020,1,2:2
