1健康教育对慢性阻塞性肺疾病患者的影响显示文摘目的 了解健康教育对慢性阻塞性肺疾病 (chronicobstructivepulmonarydisease,COPD)患者的相关知识、行为及自理能力的影响。方法 对 30名COPD老年患者在健康教育前、健康教育结束时及结束后 2个月分别进行相关知识、行为 (包括吸烟、呼吸方式及生活习惯 )和自理能力进行测定。结果 教育前、后知识及行为中的吸烟、呼吸方式改变明显 ,行为中的每日锻炼次数有改变 ,而行为中的其他生活习惯及自理能力无明显改变。结论 健康教育能很好地促进COPD患者掌握防护知识 ,增进应对疾病的有效行为 。曾慧 何国平 Nirmala Pusari 2003解放军护理杂志2003,20,1:23
2我国早期儿童学习与发展的现状分析:一项来自EAP-ECDS的研究报告显示文摘本研究聚焦探讨我国早期儿童学习与发展的现状与差异.以五省市1785名3—6岁学前儿童为对象,采用爯亚太学前儿童发展量表爲测查儿童在认知思维、社会情绪、运动技能、语言阅读、健康安全、文化参与及学习品质七大领域的发展状况.研究发现我国儿童早期学习与发展呈现良好的发展态势,除运动外,在其它各领域发展显著优于亚太五国儿童;来自经济较发达的东部省市和城市儿童发展较好,西部和农村儿童发展存在弱势,但是不同地区儿童的发展优势和弱势领域各有不同;优质园儿童在学习和发展的各方面表现均优于普通园儿童.因此,我国儿童发展存在社会经济文化差异,提升各地幼儿园质量将是全面促进我国儿童早期良好发展的重要途径.周兢 张莉 Nirmala Rao 2018全球教育展望2018,47,7:10
3Assessment of heavy metal pollution from the sediment of Tupilipalem Coast,southeast coast of India显示文摘Sediment from twelve stations was sampled from the Tupilipalem Coast, southeast coast of India, and the presence of a set of heavy metals was established including iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), chromium(Cr),copper(Cu), nickel(Ni), lead(Pb), zinc(Zn) and cadmium(Cd). The heavy metals were assessed by factor analysis, the results of which showed positive and/or negative correlations among Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb,Zn, and Cd. Factor analysis also indicated that heavy metals in the sediments of the study area have different natural and anthropogenic sources. Similarly, a sediment pollution assessment was done using the Geoaccumulation Index(Igeo), Enrichment Factor(EF), and Pollution Load Index(PLI). The Geoaccumulation Index indicated that the surface sediment of the Tupilipalem Coast was extremely contaminated with Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The calculation of enrichment factors showed a significant enrichment with respect to Pb, Zn, and Cd and a moderate enrichment with Cr, Cu, and Ni. The falling trend of average contents' enrichment factors is Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Mn > Fe. The PLI values of the Cd show higher(> 1) values due to the influence of distinct external sources like agricultural runoff, industrial activities, and other anthropogenic inputs. Ninety two percent of heavy metals under study showed the highest concentrations at station TP-5 where the Buckingham Canal and other agricultural and aquacultural effluents connect with the Bay of Bengal. 4Antimicrobial potential of Actinomycetes species isolated from marine environment显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Actinomycetes species isolated from marine environment.Methods:Twenty one strains of Actinomyceteswere isolated from samples of Royapuram, Muttukadu, Mahabalipuram sea shores and Adyar estuary. Preliminary screening was done using cross-streak method against two gram-positive and eight gram-negative bacteria.The most potent strains C11 and C12 were selected from which antibacterial substances were extracted. The antibacterial activities of the extracts were performed using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Molecular identification of those isolates was done.Results:All those twenty one isolates were active against at least one of the test organisms. Morphological characters were recorded. C11 showed activity againstStaphylococcusspecies(13.0暲0.5 mm),Vibrio harveyi(11.0暲0.2 mm),Pseudomonas species(12.0暲0.3 mm). 5Screening of flavonoid 'quercetin' from the rhizome of Smilax china Linn.for anti-psoriatic activity显示文摘Objective:To assess anti-psoriatic activity of the methanol extract and the isolated flavonoid quercetin from the rhizome of Smilax china(S.china) Linn.Methods:Mouse tail test was used for the evaluation of anti-psoriatic activity.Methanol extract(100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) and isolated flavonoid quercetin(25 and 50 mg/kg b.w.) were tested in Swiss albino mice.Parameters studied in the mouse tail test were changes in epidermal thickness and percentage orthokeratotic values.The anti-inflammatory role of the methanol extract and isolated flavonoid quercetin was evaluated using carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats.In vitro antiproliferant assay on HaCaT cell lines was also carried out.Results:The isolated flavonoid quercetin from the rhizome of S.china produced significant orthokeratosis(P<0.01) in the mouse tail test.In epidermal thickness,a significant reduction with respect to control was observed in groups treated with retinoic acid and isolated flavonoid quercetin.The methanol extract(200 mg/kg) and isolated flavonoid quercetin(50 mg/kg) showed anti-inflammatory effect in terms of significant inhibition(P<0.001) in leukocyte migration.Maximum antiproliferant activity was shown by isolated flavonoid quercetin(IC_(50),62.42± 10.20 μg/mL).Conclusions:From the above data,the flavonoid quercetin shows significant orthokeratosis,anti-inflammatory and maximum antiproliferant activities.To our knowledge,this is the first report on the anti-psoriatic effect of the flavonoid quercetin which is promising for further investigations to prove its anti-psoriatic activity.Vijayalakshmi A Ravichandiran V Malarkodi Velraj Nirmala S Jayakumari S 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,4:7
6Protective effect of tannins from Ficus racemosa in hypercholesterolemia and diabetes induced vascular tissue damage in rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the protective effect of tannins from Ficus racemosa(F.racemosa) on the lipid profile and antioxidant parameters in high fat meal and streptozotocin induced hypercholestremia associated diabetes model in rats.Methods:The crude tannin fraction was separated from the acetone(70%v/v) bark extract of F.racemosa.Oral administratipn of tannin fraction(TF)(100 & 200 mg/kg body weight) to rats fed with high fat meal for 30 days (4%cholesterol,1%cholic acid,0.5%egg albumin) and injected with streptozotocin(35 mg/ kg i.p.in citrate buffer on 14th day).Results:The administration of TF significantly reverse the increased blood glucose,total cholesterol,triglycerides,low density lipoprotein and also significandy restored the insulin and high density lipoprotein in the serum.In addition tannins significantly restored the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase,catalase and decreased the,glutathione peroxidase,and glutathione,thereby restoring the antioxidant status of the organs to almost normal levels.Conclutions:The results of this study show that two different doses of tannin supplementation had a favorable effect on plasma glucose and lipid profile concentrations.It also had an influence on attenuating oxidative stress in diabetic tats.Velayutham Ravichandiran Sankaradoss Nirmala KFH Nazeer Ahamed 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,5:5
7Targeting cancer testis antigens for biomarkers and immunotherapy in colorectal cancer: Current status and challenges显示文摘Colorectal cancer ranks third among the estimatedcancer cases and cancer related mortalities in United States in 2014. Early detection and efficient therapy remains a significant clinical challenge for this disease. Therefore, there is a need to identify novel tumor asso-ciated molecules to target for biomarker development and immunotherapy. In this regard, cancer testis antigens have emerged as a potential targets for developing novel clinical biomarkers and immunotherapy for various malignancies. These germ cell specific proteins exhibit aberrant expression in cancer cells and contribute in tumorigenesis. Owing to their unique expression profile and immunogenicity in cancer patients, cancer testis antigens are clinically referred as the most promising tumor associated antigens. Several cancer testis antigens have been studied in colorectal cancer but none of them could be used in clinical practice. 9Associations between NOD2/CARD15 genotype andphenotype in Crohn’s disease-Are we there yet?显示文摘There have been multiple NOD2/CARD15 genotype- phenotype analyses undertaken in patients with Crohn’s disease since the gene’s discovery in 2001. This review focuses on the major published series based upon their size and on the presence of specific clinical and genetic information provided in the published material from 2001 to 2005. Twelve studies provided raw data to carry out comparisons of disease location while ten studies included analysis of NOD2/CARD15 genotypes. NOD2/CARD15 variant frequency in ileal disease did not differ significantly among studies, whereas a comparison of disease location demonstrated highly significant differences among studies. Meta-analysis confirmed significant associations between NOD2/CARD15 variants and both ileal and ileocolonic disease locations, and with both stricturing and penetrating forms of disease behavior. 12Sleep, circadian dysrhythmia, obesity and diabetes显示文摘Synchrony of biological processes with environmental cues developed over millennia to match growth, reproduction and senescence. This entails a complex interplay of genetic, metabolic, chemical, light, hormonal andhedonistic factors across life forms. Sleep is one of the most prominent rhythms where such a match is established. Over the past 100 years or so, it has been possible to disturb the synchrony between sleep-wake cycle and environmental cues. Development of electric lights, shift work and continual accessibility of the internet has disrupted this match. As a result, many noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease and malignancies have been attributed in part to such disruption. 13Carvacrol Promotes Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis through PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathway in MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells显示文摘Objective:To examine the role of carvacrol in modulating PI3 K/AKT signaling involved in human breast cancer pathogenesis using in vitro experimental model MCF-7 cells.Methods:MTT and lactate dehydrogenase assays were performed with cells treated with different doses of carvacrol(0–250μmol/L)at different time points(24 and 48 h).The nuclear morphology was assessed in MCF-7 cells with propidium iodide(PI)and acridine orange/ethidium bromide(AO/EB)staining and analyzed by fluorescence microscopy.Events like cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were observed by flow cytometric analysis and expressions of p-Rb,cyclin D1,cyclin-dependent kinase 4(CDK4),CDK6,Bax,Bcl-2,PI3 K/p-AKT were analyzed by immunoblot.Results:Carvacrol significantly reduced cell viability with the half maximal inhibitory concentration value of 200μmol/L at 24 and 48 h(P<0.05).importantly,there was a significant increase in the accumulation of the G0/G1 phase upon treatment with carvacrol in MCF-7 cells(P<0.05 or P<0.01).A remarkable decrease in protein expressions of p-Rb,cyclin D1,CDK4 and CDK6 denoted cell cycle arrest(P<0.05 or P<0.01).In addition,carvacrol treatment significantly inhibited PI3 K/p-AKT protein expressions leading to induction of apoptosis mediated by decreased Bcl2 and increased Bax protein expressions.Further,Annexin V/PI staining by FACS analysis,dual staining by AO/EB and PI staining studies suggested induction of apoptosis by carvacrol through PI3 K/Akt signaling pathway in MCF-7 cells.Conclusion:Carvacrol significantly inhibited the breast cancer MCF-7 cell proliferation and induced apoptosis via suppressing PI3/AKT signaling pathway.Ashok Mari Gopikrishnan Mani Sirpu Natesh Nagabhishek Gopaiakrishnan Balaraman Nirmala Subramanian Fathima Bushra Mirza Jagan Sundaram Devaki Thiruvengadam 2021Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2021,27,9:3
14Hybridization between salt resistant and salt susceptible genotypes of mungbean(Vigna radiata L.Wilczek)and purity testing of the hybrids using SSRs markers显示文摘Six cultivated and two wild genotypes of mungbean(Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) possessing variation for phenotypic and genotypic response for salt tolerance were hybridized. Hybridization results showed successful pod set and significant variations in cross-compatibility of investigated genotypes. Genotypes PLM 380 and PLM 562 showed promising combining ability with all genotypes. Results revealed significant crossing compatibility between V. radiata and V. sublobata. The cross ability ranged from 1.99 to 5.12%(average 3.08%). Molecular analysis confirmed the hybrids purity. All F_1 seeds were bold, green/shiny green and germinated between 3 to 5 days. Hybrid plants were normal, fertile and healthier over their respective progenitors. Uniform flowering and maturity of the hybrids showed absence of any defect or alteration in plant habit and life cycle of the hybrids. The hybrid plants showed increase in yield characteristics as no. of pods, pod length, 100 seeds weight, and yield per plant. Number of pods containing F_2 seeds ranged from 5–8 per cluster. The F_2 seeds were collected and stored for further research. Present study suggests that salt resistant wild relatives or cultivars of mungbean can be explored by breeding as a source of useful traits/genes providing salt tolerance. This may help in development of best mungbean variety for saline prone areas. 15Hepatoprotective activity of Musa paradisiaca on experimental animal models显示文摘Objective:To invesligale the hepatoprotective activity of stem of Musa paradisiaca(M.paradisiaca)in CCl_4 and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity models in rats.Methods:Hepatoprotective activity of alcoholic and aqueous extracts of stem of M.paradisiaca was demonstrated by using two experimentally induced hepatotoxicity models.Results:Administration of hepatotoxins(CCl_4 and paracetamol)showed significant biochemical and histological deteriorations in the liver of experimental animals.Pretreatment with alcoholic extract(500 mg/kg),more significantly and to a lesser extent the alcoholic extract(250 mg/kg)and aqueous extract(500 mg/kg),reduced the elevated levels of the serum enzymes like serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(SCOT),serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(SGPT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP)and bilirubin levels and alcoholic and aqueous extracts reversed the hepatic damage towards the normal,which further evidenced the hepatoprotective activity of stem of M.paradisiaca.Conclusions:The alcoholic extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg,p.o.and aqueous extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg,p.o.of stem of M.paradisiaca have significant effect on the liver of CCl_4 and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity animal models.Nirmala M Girija K Lakshman K Divya T 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,1:3

18Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate in redox balance and diseases:a friend or foe?显示文摘The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NAD^(+)/NADH)and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate(NADP+/NADPH)redox couples function as cofactors or/and substrates for numerous enzymes to retain cellular redox balance and energy metabolism.Thus,maintaining cellular NADH and NADPH balance is critical for sustaining cellular homeostasis.The sources of NADPH generation might determine its biological effects.Newly-recognized biosynthetic enzymes and genetically encoded biosensors help us better understand how cells maintain biosynthesis and distribution of compartmentalized NAD(H)and NADP(H)pools.It is essential but challenging to distinguish how cells sustain redox couple pools to perform their integral functions and escape redox stress.However,it is still obscure whether NADPH is detrimental or beneficial as either deficiency or excess in cellular NADPH levels disturbs cellular redox state and metabolic homeostasis leading to redox stress,energy stress,and eventually,to the disease state.Additional study of the pathways and regulatory mechanisms of NADPH generation in different compartments,and the means by which NADPH plays a role in various diseases,will provide innovative insights into its roles in human health and may find a value of NADPH for the treatment of certain diseases including aging,Alzheimer's disease,Parkinson's disease,cardiovascular diseases,ischemic.Nirmala Koju Zheng-hong Qin Rui Sheng 2022Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2022,43,8:2
