Spatial cloud computing: how can the geospatial sciences use and help shape cloud computing?显示文摘The geospatial sciences face grand information technology(IT)challenges in the twenty-first century:data intensity, computing intensity, concurrent access intensity and spatiotemporal intensity. These challenges require the readiness of a computing infrastructure that can:(1)better support discovery, access and utilization of data and data processing so as to relieve scientists and engineers of IT tasks and focus on scientific discoveries;(2)provide real-time IT resources to enable real-time applications, such as emergency response;(3)deal with access spikes;and(4)provide more reliable and scalable service for massive numbers of concurrent users to advance public knowledge. The emergence of cloud computing provides a potential solution with an elastic,on-demand computing platform to integrateobservation systems, parameter extracting algorithms, phenomena simulations, analytical visualization and decision support, and to provide social impact and user feedbackthe essential elements of the geospatial sciences. We discuss the utilization of cloud computing to support the intensities of geospatial sciences by reporting from our investigations on how cloud computing could enable the geospatial sciences and how spatiotemporal principles, the kernel of the geospatial sciences, could be utilized to ensure the benefits of cloud computing.Four research examples are presented to analyze how to:(1)search,access and utilize geospatial data;(2)configure computing infrastructure to enable the computability of intensive simulation models;(3)disseminate and utilize research results for massive numbers of concurrent users;and(4)adopt spatiotemporal principles to support spatiotemporal intensive applications. The paper concludes with a discussion of opportunities and challenges for spatial cloud computing(SCC).Chaowei Yang Michael Goodchild Qunying Huang Doug Nebert Robert Raskin Yan Xu Myra Bambacus Daniel Fay 2011International Journal of Digital Earth2011,4,4:55
Innovation and future of mining rock mechanics显示文摘The 121 mining method of longwall mining first proposed in England has been widely used around the world. This method requires excavation of two mining roadways and reservation of one coal pillar to mine one working face.Due to considerable excavation of roadway, the mining roadway is generally destroyed during coal mining. The stress concentration in the coal pillar can cause large deformation of surrounding rocks, rockbursts and other disasters, and subsequently a large volume of coal pillar resources will be wasted. To improve the coal recovery rate and reduce excavation of the mining roadway, the 111 mining method of longwall mining was proposed in the former Soviet Union based on the 121 mining method. The 111 mining method requires excavation of one mining roadway and setting one filling body to replace the coal pillar while maintaining another mining roadway to mine one working face. However, because the stress transfer structure of roadway and working face roof has not changed, the problem of stress concentration in the surrounding rocks of roadway has not been well solved. To solve the above problems, the conventional concept utilizing high-strength support to resist the mining pressure for the 121 and 111 mining methods should be updated. The idea is to utilize mining pressure and expansion characteristics of the collapsed rock mass in the goaf to automatically form roadways, avoiding roadway excavation and waste of coal pillar.Based on the basic principles of mining rock mechanics, the“equilibrium mining”theory and the“short cantilever beam”mechanical model are proposed.Key technologies, such as roof directional presplitting technology, negative Poisson’s ratio(NPR)high-prestress constant-resistance support technology, and gangue blocking support technology, are developed following the“equilibrium mining”theory.Accordingly, the 110 and N00 mining methods of an automatically formed roadway(AFR)by roof cutting and pressure releasing without pillars are proposed. The mining methods have been applied to a large number of coal mines with different overburdens, coal seam thicknesses, roof types and gases in China, realizing the integrated mode of coal mining and roadway retaining. On this basis,in view of the complex geological conditions and intelligent mining demand of coal mines,an intelligent and unmanned development direction of the“equilibrium mining”method is prospected.Manchao He Qi Wang Qunying Wu 2021Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2021,13,1:28
Application of Pb isotopic tracing technique to constraining the source of Pb in the West Lake Longjing tea显示文摘This paper dealt with the Pb contents and Pb isotopic composition of the West Lake Longjing tea. The results showed that in the tea leaves, from young leaf →old leaf →tea limb, the Pb contents tend to increase gradu-ally from 1.63 →4.84 →6.07×10-6, wich revealed that the Pb was accumulated gradually in the tea. After cleaned, the Pb contents of tea leaves were significantly reduced. This indicated that the deposits on the surface of tea leaves made a great contributuion to Pb contents. The survey results for soils in the relevant tea gardens showed that soil from the Longjing tea garden has higher Pb contents, with an average level of 49.6×10-6, two times those of common soils (24×10-6) in China. Results of the systematic analysis for tea, tea garden soil and the samples with the relevant background of the Pb isotopic composition displayed that the Pb isotopic ratio of tea is 206Pb/207Pb=1.164±0.005 (2σ). The ratio of 206Pb/207Pb for the soil gradually decreased from residue phase, soil dilute acid extract phase, and then to urban topsoil, i.e., 1.175 →1.171 →1.170. The 208Pb/(206Pb+207Pb) ratios also show a similar variation trend. 206Pb/207Pb ratios in the samples with the relevant background were: vehicle exhaust, 1.124; coal-combustion, 1.156; atmosphere, 1.168; and water, 1.166. Comparative studies have shown that Pb pollution is popular in the environ-mental media (soil, atmosphere, water) in Hangzhou. With the aggravation of Pb pollution, the Pb isotopic composi-tion gradually changed from the natural background (soil residues) to the direction of automobile exhaust. This phe-nomenon could illustrate that the pollution source was the vehicle exhaust, while the coal-combustion contributed little to environmental pollution in Hangzhou. The Pb of the Longjing tea came mostly from soluble phase Pb in the polluted soil. Moreover, secondary pollution was caused by vehicle exhaust.LU Yuanfa YANG Hongmei MA Liyan CHEN Xiqing WANG Qunying 2011Chinese Journal Of Geochemistry2011,30,4:13
Effect of Sc and Zr additions on microstructures and corrosion behavior of Al-Cu-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys显示文摘The effects of adding the alloy element Sc to Al alloys on strengthening, recrystallization and modification of the grain microstructure have been investigated. The combination of Sc and Zr alloying not only produces a remarkable synergistic effect of inhibition of recrystallization and refinement of grain size but also substantially reduce the amount of high-cost additional Sc. In this work, the microstructures and corrosion behavior of a new type of Al-Cu-Mg-Sc-Zr alloy with Sc/Zr ratio of 1/2 were investigated. The experimental results showed that the Sc and Zr additions to Al-Cu-Mg alloy could strongly inhibit recrystallization, refine grain size, impede the segregation of Cu element along the grain boundary and increase the spacing of grain boundary precipitates. In addition, adding Sc and Zr to Al-Cu-Mg alloy effectively restricts the corrosion mechanism conversion associated with Al2 Cu Mg particles, which resulted in the change of the cross-section morphology of inter-granular corrosion from an undercutting to an elliptical shape. The susceptibility to inter-granular corrosion was significantly decreased with increasing Sc and Zr additions to the Al-Cu-Mg alloy. The relationships between microstructures evolution and inter-granular corrosion mechanism of Al-Cu-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys were also discussed.Fangfang Sun Guiru Liu Nash Qunying Li Enzuo Liu Chunnain He Chunsheng Shi Naiqin Zhao 2017Journal of Materials Science & Technology2017,33,9:10

Post-traumatic stress disorder status in a rescue group after the Wenchuan earthquake relief显示文摘Previous studies have suggested that the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder in earthquake rescue workers is relatively high. Risk factors for this disorder include demographic characteristics, earthquake-related high-risk factors, risk factors in the rescue process, personality, social support and coping style. This study examined the current status of a unit of 1 040 rescue workers who participated in earthquake relief for the Wenchuan earthquake that occurred on May 12th, 2008. Post-traumatic stress disorder was diagnosed primarily using the Clinician-Administered Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Scale during structured interviews. Univariate and multivariate sta-tistical analyses were used to examine major risk factors that contributed to the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder. Results revealed that the incidence of this disorder in the rescue group was 5.96%. The impact factors in univariate analysis included death of family members, contact with corpses or witnessing of the deceased or seriously injured, near-death experience, severe injury or mental trauma in the rescue process and working at the epicenter of the earthquake. Correlation analysis suggested that post-traumatic stress disorder was positively correlated with psychotic and neurotic personalities, negative coping and low social support. Impact factors in mul-tivariate logistic regression analysis included near-death experience, severe injury or mental trauma, working in the epicenter of the rescue, neurotic personality, negative coping and low social support, among which low social support had the largest odds ratio of 20.42. Findings showed that the oc-currence of post-traumatic stress disorder was the result of the interaction of multiple factors.Junhua Huang Qunying Liu Jinliang Li Xuejiang Li Jin You Liang Zhang Changfu Tian Rongsheng Luan 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,20:3
ESTIMATION OF DOPPLER CENTROID FREQUENCY IN SPACEBORNE SCANSAR显示文摘Doppler centroid frequency is an essential parameter in the imaging processing of the Scanning mode Synthetic Aperture Radar (ScanSAR). Inaccurate Doppler centroid frequency will result in ghost images in imaging result. In this letter, the principle and algorithms of Doppler centroid frequency estimation are introduced. Then the echo data of ScanSAR system is analyzed. Based on the algorithms of energy balancing and correlation Doppler estimator in the estimation of Doppler centroid frequency in strip mode SAR, an improved method for Doppler centroid frequency estimation in ScanSAR is proposed. The method has improved the accuracy of Doppler centroid frequency estimation in ScanSAR by zero padding between burst data. Finally, the proposed method is validated with the processing of ENVIronment SATellite Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ENVISAT ASAR) wide swath raw data.Zou Xiufang Zhang Qunying 2008Journal of Electronics(China)2008,25,6:3

Spatiotemporal event detection: a review显示文摘The advancements of sensing technologies, including remote sensing,in situ sensing, social sensing, and health sensing, have tremendously improved our capability to observe and record natural and social phenomena, such as natural disasters, presidential elections, and infectious diseases. The observations have provided an unprecedented opportunity to better understand and respond to the spatiotemporal dynamics of the environment, urban settings, health and disease propagation, business decisions, and crisis and crime.Spatiotemporal event detection serves as a gateway to enable a better understanding by detecting events that represent the abnormal status of relevant phenomena. This paper reviews the literature for different sensing capabilities, spatiotemporal event extraction methods, and categories of applications for the detected events. The novelty of this review is to revisit the definition and requirements of event detection and to layout the overall workflow(from sensing and event extraction methods to the operations and decision-supporting processes based on the extracted events)as an agenda for future event detection research.Guidance is presented on the current challenges to this research agenda, and future directions are discussed for conducting spatiotemporal event detection in the era of big data, advanced sensing, and artificial intelligence.Manzhu Yu Myra Bambacus Guido Cervone Keith Clarke Daniel Duffy Qunying Huang Jing Li Wenwen Li Zhenlong Li Qian Liu Bernd Resch Jingchao Yang Chaowei Yang 2020International Journal of Digital Earth2020,13,12:2
Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a recombinant protein subunit vaccine and an inactivated vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 variants in non-human primates显示文摘Emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and the gradually decreasing neutralizing antibodies over time post vaccination have led to an increase in incidents of breakthrough infection across the world. To investigate the potential protective effect of the recombinant protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine targeting receptor-binding domain(RBD)(PS-RBD)and whole inactivated virus particle vaccine(IV)against the variant strains,in this study, rhesus macaques were immunized with PS-RBD or IV vaccine, followed by a Beta variant(B.1.351)challenge.Although neutralizing activity against the Beta variant was reduced compared with that against the prototype, the decreased viral load in both upper and lower respiratory tracts, milder pathological changes, and downregulated inflammatory cytokine levels in lung tissues after challenge demonstrated that PS-RBD and IV still provided effective protection against the Beta variant in the macaque model.Furthermore,PS-RBD-induced macaque sera possessed general binding and neutralizing activity to Alpha,Beta,Delta, and Omicron variants in our study, though the neutralizing antibody(NAb)titers declined by varying degrees, demonstrating potential protection of PS-RBD against current circulating variants of concern(VOCs).Interestingly, although the IV vaccine-induced extremely low neutralizing antibody titers against the Beta variant,it still showed reduction for viral load and significantly alleviated pathological change.Other correlates of vaccine-induced protection(CoP)like antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity(ADCC)and immune memory were both confirmed to be existing in IV vaccinated group and possibly be involved in the protective mechanism.Qian He Qunying Mao Xiaozhong Peng Zhanlong He Shuaiyao Lu Jialu Zhang Fan Gao Lianlian Bian Chaoqiang An Wenhai Yu Fengmei Yang Yanan Zhou Yun Yang Yanyan Li Yadi Yuan Xujia Yan Jinghuan Yang Xing Wu Weijin Huang Changgui Li Junzhi Wang Zhenglun Liang Miao Xu 2022Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2022,7,4:2

A geospatial hybrid cloud platform based on multi-sourced computing and model resources for geosciences显示文摘Cloud computing has been considered as the next-generation computing platform with the potential to address the data and computing challenges in geosciences. However, only a limited number of geoscientists have been adapting this platform for their scientific research mainly due to two barriers:1)selecting an appropriate cloud platform for a specific application could be challenging,as various cloud services are available and 2)existing general cloud platforms are not designed to support geoscience applications, algorithms and models. To tackle such barriers, this research aims to design a hybrid cloud computing(HCC)platform that can utilize and integrate the computing resources across different organizations to build a unified geospatial cloud computing platform. This platform can manage different types of underlying cloud infrastructure(e.g.,private or public clouds),and enables geoscientists to test and leverage the cloud capabilities through a web interface.Additionally, the platform also provides different geospatial cloud services, such as workflow as a service,on the top of common cloud services(e.g.,infrastructure as a service)provided by general cloud platforms. Therefore, geoscientists can easily create a model workflow by recruiting the needed models for a geospatial application or task on the fly.A HCC prototype is developed and dust storm simulation is used to demonstrate the capability and feasibility of such platform in facilitating geosciences by leveraging across-organization computing and model resources.Qunying Huang Jing Li Zhenlong Li 2018International Journal of Digital Earth2018,11,12:2

Application of the Reactive Oxygen-Based Cervical Exfoliated Cell Staining Solution in Clinical Cervical Cancer Screening显示文摘We developed a special methylene blue solution for staining of cervix shedding cells based on catalytic oxidizing chromogenic reaction, which shows a potential for cervical cancer cytology screening. We screened a total of 1 922 women for cervical cancer with the special methylene blue staining method and a conventional Pap smear method using cervix shedding cells. Then, the patients with positive indicators of the Pap smear or this special solution staining method were examined by the electron colposcopy and histopathological examination. Staining of cervical exfoliated cells with this reactive oxygen-based special solution showed that the number of positive cases was 140(7.28%). Among them, 21 cases showed dark green(1.09%), and 119 cases showed purple black(6.19%). The results of the Pap smear method showed that the number of positive cases was 123(6.40%), of which ASCUS was 105(5.46%), ASC-H was 5(0.26%), and LSIL was 9(0.47%), and HSIL was 4(0.21%). For cervical exfoliated cell special staining solution for screening cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN-Ⅱ, CIN-Ⅲ) and cervical cancer, sensitivity was 83.33%, specificity was 65.52%, accuracy was 74.29%, missed diagnosis rate was 13.33%, positive coincidence rate was 51.43%, and the negative coincidence rate is 86.67%. Our results proved the value of this method for early screening of cervical cancer through clinical practice in China.GAO Fei Lü Qiongying ZHANG Wei XIAO Chengrong XIANG Qunying LI Lijia 2019Wuhan University Journal of Natural Sciences2019,24,3:2
Utilize cloud computing to support dust storm forecasting显示文摘The simulations and potential forecasting of dust storms are of significant interest to public health and environment sciences.Dust storms have interannual variabilities and are typical disruptive events. The computing platform for a dust storm forecasting operational system should support a disruptive fashion by scaling up to enable high-resolution forecasting and massive public access when dust storms come and scaling down when no dust storm events occur to save energy and costs. With the capability of providing a large, elastic, and virtualized pool of computational resources, cloud computing becomes a new and advantageous computing paradigm to resolve scientific problems traditionally requiring a large-scale and high-performance cluster. This paper examines the viability for cloud computing to support dust storm forecasting.Through a holistic study by systematically comparing cloud computing using Amazon EC2 to traditional high performance computing(HPC)cluster,we find that cloud computing is emerging as a credible solution for(1)supporting dust storm forecasting in spinning off a large group of computing resources in a few minutes to satisfy the disruptive computing requirements of dust storm forecasting,(2)performing high-resolution dust storm forecasting when required,(3)supporting concurrent computing requirements,(4)supporting real dust storm event forecasting for a large geographic domain by using recent dust storm event in Phoniex,05 July 2011 as example,and(5)reducing cost by maintaining low computing support when there is no dust storm events while invoking a large amount of computing resource to perform high-resolution forecasting and responding to large amount of concurrent public accesses.Qunying Huang Chaowei Yang Karl Benedict Songqing Chen Abdelmounaam Rezgui Jibo Xie 2013International Journal of Digital Earth2013,6,4:2
