To Blame or Not?Modulating Third-Party Punishment with the Framing Effect显示文摘People as third-party observers, without direct self-interest,may punish norm violators to maintain social norms.However,third-party judgment and the follow-up punishment might be susceptible to the way we frame(i.e.,verbally describe)a norm violation. We conducted a behavioral and a neuroimaging experiment to investigate the above phenomenon, which we call the“third-party framing effect”.In these experiments, participants observed an anonymous perpetrator deciding whether to keep her/his economic benefit while exposing a victim to a risk of physical pain(described as“harming others”in one condition and“not helping others”in the other condition),then they had a chance to punish that perpetrator at their own cost. Our results showed that the participants were more willing to execute third-party punishment under the harm frame compared to the help frame, manifesting a framing effect.Self-reported anger toward perpetrators mediated the relationship between empathy toward victims and the framing effect.Meanwhile, activation of the insula mediated the relationship between mid-cingulate cortex activation and the framing effect;the functional connectivity between these regions significantly predicted the size of the framing effect. These findings shed light on the psychological and neural mechanisms of the third-party framing effect. | Jiamiao Yang Ruolei Gu Jie Liu Kexin Deng Xiaoxuan Huang Yue-Jia Luo Fang Cui | 2022 | Neuroscience Bulletin2022,38,5: | 2

Flexibility as a Strategy for Avoiding Call Overlap in Male Anhui Treefrogs显示文摘Male-male vocal competition is critical for mating success in anuran species;however,it remains unknown that how males regulate their competitive strategies dynamically during competition because calling is highly time-consuming,energetically demanding and likely to increase predation risks.Since different parts of calls will encode different information for vocal communication,we hypothesized that competitive strategies of male frogs may be modulated by the temporal and spectral features of different call notes. To test this hypothesis, the natural advertisement calls(OC),its modified versions with the first call note replaced by white noise(WN)or other notes and with the fifth call note replaced by WN,were played back to the Anhui tree frogs(Rhacophorus zhoukaiyae). Results showed that 1)males produced more competitive calls in response to acoustic stimuli compared to their baseline calling during silence;and 2)males emitted more non-overlapping calls compared to overlapping calls in response to the acoustic stimuli. These results are consistent with the idea that males are flexible to acoustic signals and their competition strategies are modulated dynamically by social contexts. | Jinjin SONG Ruolei SUN Ke FANG Baowei ZHANG Yezhong TANG Guangzhan FANG | 2020 | Asian Herpetological Research2020,11,3: | 1
Advances of CRISPR-Cas13 system in COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment显示文摘The ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has resulted in over 570 million infections and 6 million deaths worldwide. Early detection and quarantine are essential to arrest the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19. High-risk groups, such as older adults and individuals with comorbidities, can present severe symptoms, including pyrexia, pertussis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome, on SARS-CoV-2 infection that can prove fatal, demonstrating a clear need for high-throughput and sensitive platforms to detect and eliminate SARS-CoV-2. CRISPR-Cas13, an emerging CRISPR system targeting RNA with high specificity and efficiency, has recently drawn much attention for COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment. Here, we summarized the current research progress on CRISPR-Cas13 in COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment and highlight the challenges and future research directions of CRISPR-Cas13 for effectively counteracting COVID-19. | Qianqian Zhou Yanhua Chen Ruolei Wang Fengjing Jia Feng He Fuwen Yuan | 2023 | Genes & Diseases2023,10,6: | 0
Spatial dynamics of Chinese Muntjac related to past and future climate fluctuations显示文摘Climate fluctuations in the past and in the future are likely to result in population expansions, shifts,or the contraction of the ecological niche of many species, and potentially leading to the changes in their geographical distributions.Prediction of suitable habitats has been developed as a useful tool for the assessment of habitat suitability and resource conservation to protect wildlife. Here,we model the ancestral demographic history of the extant modern Chinese Muntjac Muntiacus reevesi populations using approximate Bayesian computation(ABC)and used the maximum entropy model to simulate the past and predict the future spatial dynamics of the species under climate oscillations. Our results indicated that the suitable habitats for the M.reevesi shifted to the Southeast and contracted during the Last Glacial Maximum, whereas they covered a broader more northern position in the Middle Holocene. The ABC analyses revealed that the modern M.reevesi populations diverged in the Middle Holocene coinciding with the significant contraction of the highly suitable habitat areas.Furthermore, our predictions suggest that the potentially suitable environment distribution for the species will expand under all future climate scenarios. These results indicated that the M.reevesi diverged in the recent time after the glacial period and simultaneously as its habitat's expanded in the Middle Holocene.Furthermore, the past and future climate fluctuation triggered the change of Chinese muntjac spatial distribution, which has great influence on the Chinese muntjac's population demographic history. | Zhonglou Sun Pablo Orozco-terWengel Guotao Chen Ruolei Sun Lu Sun Hui Wang Wenbo Shi Baowei Zhang | 2021 | Current Zoology2021,67,4: | 0
Consistency in responses to conspecific advertisement calls with various signal-to-noise ratios in both sexes of the Anhui tree frog显示文摘Environmental noise has a significant negative impact on acoustic communication in most situations,as it influences the production,transmis-sion,and reception of acoustic signals. However, how animals respond to conspecific sounds when there is interference from environmental noise, and whether males and females display convergent behavioral responses in the face of noise masking remain poorly understood. In this study,we investigated the effects of conspecific male advertisement calls with different signal-to-noise ratios on male-male competition and female choice in the Anhui tree frog Rhacophorus zhoukaiyae using playback and phonotaxis experiments, respectively. The results showed that(1)female Anhui tree frogs preferentially selected the conspecific calls with higher SNR compared to calls with lower SNR;(2)males preferen-tially responded vocally to the conspecific calls with higher SNR compared to calls with lower SNR;and(3)males'competitive strategies were flexible in the face of noise interference. These results suggest that preferences of both sexes converge in outcome, and that male competitive strategies may depend on predictable female preferences. This study will provide an important basis for further research on decision-making in animals. | Zhiyue Wang Haohao Ma Cheng Chen Ruolei Sun Kai Liu Baowei Zhang Guangzhan Fang | 2023 | Current Zoology2023,69,6: | 0
Hierarchical auditory perception for species discrimination and individual recognition in the music frog显示文摘The ability to discriminate species and recognize individuals is crucial for reproductive success and/or survival in most animals. However, the temporal order and neural localization of these decision-making processes has remained unclear. In this study,event-related potentials(ERPs)were measured in the telencephalon, diencephalon, and mesencephalon of the music frog Nidirana daunchina. These ERPs were elicited by calls from 1 group of heterospecifics(recorded from a sympatric anuran species)and 2 groups of conspecifics that differed in their fundamental frequencies. In terms of the polarity and position within the ERP waveform, auditory ERPs generally consist of 4 main components that link to selective attention(N1),stimulus evaluation(P2),identification(N2),and classification(P3).These occur around 100,200,250,and 300 ms after stimulus onset, respectively. Our results show that the N1 amplitudes differed significantly between the heterospecific and conspecific calls, but not between the 2 groups of conspecific calls that differed in fundamental frequency. On the other hand, the N2 amplitudes were significantly different between the 2 groups of conspecific calls, suggesting that the music frogs discriminated the species first, followed by individual identification, since N1 and N2 relate to selective attention and stimuli identification, respectively. Moreover, the P2 amplitudes evoked in females were significantly greater than those in males, indicating the existence of sexual dimorphism in auditory discrimination. In addition, both the N1 amplitudes in the left diencephalon and the P2 amplitudes in the left telencephalon were greater than in other brain areas, suggesting left hemispheric dominance in auditory perception.Taken together, our results support the hypothesis that species discrimination and identification of individual characteristics are accomplished sequentially, and that auditory perception exhibits differences between sexes and in spatial dominance. | Yanzhu Fan Ke Fang Ruolei Sun Di Shen Jing Yang Yezhong Tang Guangzhan Fang | 2022 | Current Zoology2022,68,5: | 0
An open-label evaluation of safety and tolerability of coformulated bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide for post-exposure prophylaxis following potential exposure to human immunodeficiency virus-1显示文摘Background: Single-tablet regimen (STR) provides a convenient once-daily regimen for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Here, we investigated the safety and tolerability of coformulated bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF) as a three-drug, STR for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in Chinese individuals. Methods: This was a prospective, open-label, single-arm trial conducted in a sexually transmitted diseases and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome clinic of a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China. Adults requiring PEP were prescribed BIC/FTC/TAF one pill once a day for 28 days. Clinical and laboratory data were collected and analyzed at baseline, weeks 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24.Results: Of 112 participants enrolled in the study, 109 (97.3%) were male and the mean age was 30 ± 8 years. PEP completion was 96.4% (95% confidence interval: 91.1-99.0%). Two participants stopped PEP after 2 days because the source partner was identified as HIV uninfected. One participant was excluded due to hepatitis B virus infection according to the exclusion criteria. One discontinued due to the participant’s decision. No participant acquired HIV through week 24. Adherence was 98.9% (standard deviation [SD]: 3.3%) by self-reporting and 98.5% (SD: 3.5%) by pill count. Only five participants experienced mild clinical adverse events attributed to the study drug (including headache, diarrhea, and nausea) and four participants had elevated serum creatinine (grade 1).Conclusions: A once daily, STR of BIC/FTC/TAF used as PEP was safe and well-tolerated with a high rate of completion and adherence in Chinese. BIC/FTC/TAF may be a good option for PEP. | An Liu Ruolei Xin Hongwei Zhang Lili Dai Ruojun(Esther)Wu Xi Wang Aixin Li Wei Hua Jianwei Li Ying Shao Yue Gao Zhangli Wang Jiangzhu Ye Gulimila A bu dou re xi ti Zaicun Li Lijun Sun | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,135,22: | 0
Decoding fear of negative evaluation from brain morphology:A machine-learning study on structural neuroimaging data显示文摘Background:Fear of negative evaluation(FNE),referring to negative expectation and feelings toward other people’s social evaluation,is closely associated with social anxiety that plays an important role in our social life.Exploring the neural markers of FNE may be of theoretical and practical significance to psychiatry research(e.g.,studies on social anxiety). Methods:To search for potentially relevant biomarkers of FNE in human brain, the current study applied multivariate relevance vector regression,a machine-learning and data-driven approach,on brain morphological features(e.g.,cortical thickness)derived from structural imaging data;further,we used these features as indexes to predict self-reported FNE score in each participant. Results:Our results confirm the predictive power of multiple brain regions, including those engaged in negative emotional experience(e.g.,amygdala,insula),regulation and inhibition of emotional feeling(e.g.,frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate gyrus),and encoding and retrieval of emotional memory(e.g.,posterior cingulate cortex, parahippocampal gyrus). Conclusions:The current findings suggest that anxiety represents a complicated construct that engages multiple brain systems, from primitive subcortical mechanisms to sophisticated cortical processes. | Chunliang Feng Frank Krueger Ruolei Gu Wenbo Luo | 2022 | Quantitative Biology2022,10,4: | 0
Dachaihu decoction inhibits hypernutrition-induced liver metastasis from colorectal cancer by maintaining the gut vascular barrier显示文摘Background:Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most common malignancy and the second deadliest cancer worldwide.Metastasis to the liver, the most common metastatic site in CRC,is the leading cause of death in patients with CRC.Hyperlipidemia, which is common in patients with CRC,promotes CRC progression and metastasis.Hyperlipidemia is commonly observed in obese patients and is often induced by hypernutrition. The underlying mechanism of hypernutrition-induced hyperlipidemia in promoting CRC liver metastasis remains unclear, and there is an unmet need for effective and low-cost treatments for patients with CRC.Methods:A mouse cecum orthotopic CRC model combined with high-fat diet(HFD)feeding, was established to mimic liver metastasis in CRC in obese patients. The effects of Dachaihu decoction(DCHD),a traditional herbal medicine used to treat inflammation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and of the conventional prescription medicine obeticholic acid(OCA)were evaluated.HFD-induced obesity, hyperlipidemia, and CRC liver metastasis were assessed, along with the histology and pathology of the liver and intestine and the expression of metabolic genes in these tissues. The effects of DCHD and OCA on HFD-induced outcomes were evaluated, and human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)treated with bile acids(BAs)and DCHD were used to study the underlying mechanisms in vitro.Results:HFD-mediated obesity and hyperlipidemia promoted CRC metastasis, accompanied by disruption of the gut vascular barrier(GVB)and altered bile acid(BA)metabolism.DCHD decreased HFD-induced hyperlipidemia and liver metastasis in CRC,improving overall survival. Those effects of DCHD were equivalent to or better than those of OCA.DCHD regulated the expression of genes of BA metabolism and tight junctions(TJ)to prevent HFDinduced disruption of the GVB.In HUVECs,DCHD prevented the increases in intracellular Ca2t and accumulation of reactive oxygen species induced by primary conjugated BAs,assisting in the maintenance of redox homeostasis and preventing the downregulation of TJ proteins, thereby maintaining the integrity of the endothelial barrier. Conclusions:The data provide a link between hypernutrition and GVB disruption, which contributes to high liver metastasis in patients with CRC.DCHD may represent a novel therapy in CRC,and targeting abnormal lipid metabolism could be a promising therapeutic strategy for avoiding hypernutrition-associated CRC metastasis. | Ruolei Wang Fengjing Jia Zhenguo Zhao Liqing Du Lianheng Lu Dongkui Xu Feng He | 2023 | Cancer Pathogenesis and Therapy2023,1,2: | 0
