1Liver transplantation for cholangiocarcinoma:Current status and new insights显示文摘Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant tumor of the biliary system that can be classified into intrahepatic(i CCA),perihiliar(ph CCA) and distal. Initial experiences with orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT) for patientswith i CCA and ph CCA had very poor results and this treatment strategy was abandoned. In the last decade,thanks to a strict selection process and a neoadjuvant chemoradiation protocol,the results of OLT for patients with non-resectable phC CA have been shown to be excellent and this strategy has been extended worldwide in selected transplant centers. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a growing disease in most countries and can be diagnosed both in cirrhotic and in non-cirrhotic livers. Even though OLT is contraindicated in most centers,recent investigations analyzing patients that were transplanted with a misdiagnosis of HCC and were found to have an iC CA have shown encouraging results. There is some information suggesting that patients with early stages of the disease could benefit from OLT. 4Effect of sewage sludge and sugarcane bagasse biochar on soil properties and sugar beet production显示文摘Recently, biochar has shown to be an alternative to waste disposal and a source of nutrients, acting as a soil amendment. The effects of two types of biochar on soil properties and sugar beet production as well as potential for carbon(C) sequestration were evaluated: biochar produced from sewage sludge(SB) and biochar produced from a 1:1 mixture of sewage sludge and sugarcane bagasse(MB). A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using a sandy loam soil from the Brazilian savanna under treatments of MB applications at 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0%, SB application at 5.0%, and a conventional fertilization(CF) using lime and mineral fertilizers, with no fertilization as a control. After incubation for 45 d, seedlings were transplanted into each pot and cultivated for 55 d. Biochar characterization showed that pyrolysis reduced the biomass volume drastically, but concentrated the trace elements per unit of biochar weight. The MB treatments increased soil total C(by 27.8%) and pH(by 0.6), reduced the concentrations of nutrients, except for potassium(K), and chromium(Cr), and did not significantly alter lead(Pb) and cadmium(Cd) concentrations. Results of stable isotopes showed that all biochar treatments increased the total soil C stock and stability, suggesting a potential for application in C sequestration, and improved overall soil fertility. However, the biochar treatments also increased the concentrations of trace elements in the soil and plants. The sugar beet yields at 10.0% MB and 5.0% SB corresponded to 55%and 29% of the yield obtained in the CF treatment, respectively. 8WJH 6^(th) Anniversary Special Issues(1): Management of hepatocellular carcinoma Management of “very early” hepatocellular carcinoma on cirrhotic patients显示文摘Due to the advances in screening of cirrhotic patients, hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is being diagnosed in earlier stages. For this reason the number of patients diagnosed of very early HCC(single tumors ≤ 2 cm) is continuously increasing. Once a patient has been diagnosed with this condition, treatment strategies include liver resection, local therapies or liver transplantation. The decision on which therapy should the patient undergo depends on the general patients performance status and liver disease. Anyway, even in patients with similar conditions, the best treatment offer is debatable. 20Investigation of low grade thermal energy storage systems with phase changing materials显示文摘The use of phase changing materials(PCMs)for energy storage has been in the focus of scientific research for a while,primarily focusing on building cooling/heating applications due to favourable melting temperature ranges.In this paper we simulated the suitability of encapsulated Paraffin Wax on a small scale in a low temperature thermal energy storage system using COMSOL Multiphysics.Heat absorption and heating dynamics were analysed for different inlet designs and velocities,and the thermal gradient was evaluated across the tank geometry in a number of charging scenarios.Results show that paraffin wax proves to be a good storage medium based on its fast charging and good latent heat absorption.The study found that although an addition of a second inlet to the system yields higher final temperatures and improves the heat transfer rate,it does so minimally and therefore is not notably beneficial.Both designs follow the same heating dynamics independently on the final temperatures.Lastly,higher or lower velocities benefit the system based on the design.Law Torres Sevilla Jovana Radulovic 2021Energy and Built Environment2021,2,4:1
