| 1 | Changes in China’s lakes: climate and human impacts显示文摘Lakes have played a critical role in providing water and ecosystem services for people and other organisms in China for millennia.However,accelerating climate change and economic boom have resulted in unprecedented changes in these valuable lakes.Using Landsat images covering the entity of the country,we explored the changes in China’s lakes and the associated driving forces over the last 30 years(i.e.mid-1980 s to 2015).We discovered that China’s lakes have changed with divergent regional trends:in the sparsely populated Tibetan Plateau,lakes are abundant and the lake area has increased dramatically from 38596 to46831 km^2(i.e.increased by 8235 km^2,or 21.3%),whereas,in the densely populated northern and eastern regions,lakes are relatively scarce and the lake area has decreased from 36659 to 33657 km^2(i.e.decreased by 3002 km^2,or 8.2%).In particular,severe lake decreases occurred in the Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau and the Eastern Plain(-2151 km^2).Statistical analyses indicated that climate was the most important factor controlling lake changes in the Tibetan Plateau,the Yun-Gui Plateau and the Northeast Plain.However,the strength of climatic control on lake changes was low in the Eastern Plain and the Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau,where human activities,e.g.impoldering,irrigation and mining,have caused serious impacts on lakes.Further lake changes will exacerbate regional imbalances between lake resources and population distribution,and thus may increase the risk of water-resource crises in China. | Shengli Tao Jingyun Fang Suhui Ma Qiong Cai Xinyu Xiong Di Tian Xia Zhao Leqi Fang Heng Zhang Jiangling Zhu Shuqing Zhao | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,1: | 14 |
| 2 | Oil spill detection by a support vector machine based on polarization decomposition characteristics显示文摘Marine oil spills have caused major threats to marine environment over the past few years.The early detection of the oil spill is of great significance for the prevention and control of marine disasters.At present,remote sensing is one of the major approaches for monitoring the oil spill.Full polarization synthetic aperture radarc SAR data are employed to extract polarization decomposition parameters including entropy(H) and reflection entropy(A).The characteristic spectrum of the entropy and reflection entropy combination has analyzed and the polarization characteristic spectrum of the oil spill has developed to support remote sensing of the oil spill.The findings show that the information extracted from(1–A)×(1–H) and(1–H)×A parameters is relatively evident effects.The results of extraction of the oil spill information based on H×A parameter are relatively not good.The combination of the two has something to do with H and A values.In general,when H>0.7,A value is relatively small.Here,the extraction of the oil spill information using(1–A)×(1–H) and(1–H)×A parameters obtains evident effects.Whichever combined parameter is adopted,oil well data would cause certain false alarm to the extraction of the oil spill information.In particular the false alarm of the extracted oil spill information based on(1–A)×(1–H) is relatively high,while the false alarm based on(1–A)×H and(1–H)×A parameters is relatively small,but an image noise is relatively big.The oil spill detection employing polarization characteristic spectrum support vector machine can effectively identify the oil spill information with more accuracy than that of the detection method based on single polarization feature. | ZOU Yarong SHI Lijian ZHANG Shengli LIANG Chao ZENG Tao | 2016 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,9: | 3 |

| 12 | Patterns and ecological determinants of woody plant height in eastern Eurasia and its relation to primary productivity显示文摘Aims Plant height is a key functional trait related to aboveground bio-mass,leaf photosynthesis and plant fitness.However,large-scale geographical patterns in community-average plant height(cAPH)of woody species and drivers of these patterns across different life forms remain hotly debated.Moreover,whether cAPH could be used as a predictor of ecosystem primary productivity is unknown.Methods We compiled mature height and distributions of 11422 woody spe-cies in eastern Eurasia,and estimated geographic patterns in cAPH for different taxonomic groups and life forms.then we evaluated the effects of environmental(including current climate and historical climate change since the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM))and evolutionary factors on cAPH.Lastly,we compared the predictive power of cAPH on primary productivity with that of LiDAR-derived canopy-height data from a global survey.Important Findings Geographic patterns of cAPH and their drivers differed among taxonomic groups and life forms.the strongest predictor for cAPH of all woody species combined,angiosperms,all dicots and deciduous dicots was actual evapotranspiration,while temperature was the strongest pre-dictor for cAPH of monocots and tree,shrub and evergreen dicots,and water availability for gymnosperms.Historical climate change since the LGM had only weak effects on cAPH.No phylogenetic signal was detected in family-wise average height,which was also unrelated to the tested environmental factors.Finally,we found a strong correlation between cAPH and ecosystem primary productivity.Primary productivity showed a weaker relationship with cAPH of the tallest species within a grid cell and no relationship with LiDAR-derived canopy height reported in the global survey.Our findings suggest that current climate rather than historical climate change and evolutionary history determine the geographical patterns in cAPH.However,the relative effects of climatic factors representing environmental energy and water availability on spatial variations of cAPH vary among plant life forms.Moreover,our results also suggest that cAPH can be used as a good predictor of ecosystem primary productivity. | Zhiheng Wang Yaoqi Li Xiangyan Su Shengli Tao Xiao Feng Qinggang Wang Xiaoting Xu Yunpeng Liu Sean T.Michaletz Nawal Shrestha Markku Larjavaara Brian J.Enquist | 2019 | Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,5: | 0 |

| 15 | Quantifying individual tree growth and tree competition using bi-temporal airborne laser scanning data:a case study in the Sierra Nevada Mountains,California显示文摘Improved monitoring and understanding of tree growth and its responses to controlling factors are important for tree growth modeling.Airborne Laser Scanning(ALS)can be used to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of large-scale forest surveys in delineating three-dimensional forest structures and under-canopy terrains.This study proposed an ALSbased framework to quantify tree growth and competition.Bi-temporal ALS data were used to quantify tree growth in height(ΔH),crown area(ΔA),crown volume(ΔV),and tree competition for 114,000 individual trees in two conifer-dominant Sierra Nevada forests.We analyzed the correlations between tree growth attributes and controlling factors(i.e.tree sizes,competition,forest structure,and topographic parameters)at multiple levels.At the individual tree level,ΔH had no consistent correlations with controlling factors,ΔA andΔV were positively related to original tree sizes(R>0.3)and negatively related to competition indices(R<−0.3).At the forest-stand level,ΔH andΔA were highly correlated to topographic wetness index(|R|>0.7),ΔV was positively related to original tree sizes(|R|>0.8).Multivariate regression models were simulated at individual tree level forΔH,ΔA,andΔV with the R2 ranged from 0.1 to 0.43.The ALS-based tree height estimation and growth analysis results were consistent with field measurements. | Qin Ma Yanjun Su Shengli Tao Qinghua Guo | 2018 | International Journal of Digital Earth2018,11,5: | 0 |

| 17 | Which fetal growth charts should be used?A retrospective observational study in China显示文摘Background:The fetal growth charts in widest use in China were published by Hadlock>35 years ago and were established on data from several hundred of American pregnant women.After that,>100 fetal growth charts were published around the world.We attempted to assess the impact of applying the long-standing Hadlock charts and other charts in a Chinese population and to compare their ability to predict newborn small for gestational age(SGA).Methods:For this retrospective observational study,we reviewed all pregnant women(n=106,455)who booked prenatal care with ultrasound measurements for fetal biometry at the Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital between 2012 and 2019.A fractional polynomial regression model was applied to generate Shenzhen fetal growth chart ranges for head circumference(HC),biparietal diameter(BPD),abdominal circumference(AC),and femur length(FL).The differences between Shenzhen charts and published charts were quantified by calculating the Z-score.The impact of applying these published charts was quantifed by calculating the proportions of fetuses with biometric measurements below the 3rd centile of these charts.The sensitivity and area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of published charts to predict neonatal SGA(birthweight<10th centile)were assessed..Results:Following selection,169,980 scans of fetal biometry contributed by 41,032 pregnancies with reliable gestational age were analyzed.When using Hadlock references(<3rd centile),the proportions of small heads and short femurs were as high as 8.9%and 6.6%in late gestation,respectively.The INTERGROWTH-21st standards matched those of our observed curves better than other charts,in particular for fat-free biometry(HC and FL).When using AC<10th centile,all of these references were poor at predicting neonatal SGA.Conclusions:Applying long-standing Hadlock references could misclassify a large proportion of fetuses as SGA.INTERGROWTH-21st standard appears to be a safe option in China.For fat-based biometry,AC,a reference based on the Chinese population is needed.In addition,when applying published charts,particular care should be taken due to the discrepancy of measurement methods. | Jianxin Zhao Ying Yuan Jing Tao Chunyi Chen Xiaoxia Wu Yimei Liao Linlin Wu Qing Zeng Yin Chen Ke Wang Xiaohong Li Zheng Liu Jiayuan Zhou Yangwen Zhou Shengli Li Jun Zhu | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,135,16: | 0 |
| 18 | Nonscalability of Fractal Dimension to Quantify Canopy Structural Complexity from Individual Trees to Forest Stands显示文摘Canopy structural complexity is a critical emergent forest attribute,and light detection and ranging(lidar)-based fractal dimension has been recognized as its powerful measure at the individual tree level.However,the current lidar-based estimation method is highly sensitive to data characteristics,and its scalability from individual trees to forest stands remains unclear.This study proposed an improved method to estimate fractal dimension from lidar data by considering Shannon entropy,and evaluated its scalability from individual trees to forest stands through mathematical derivations.Moreover,a total of 280 forest stand scenes simulated from the terrestrial lidar data of 115 trees spanning large variability in canopy structural complexity were used to evaluate the robustness of the proposed method and the scalability of fractal dimension.The results show that the proposed method can significantly improve the robustness of lidar-derived fractal dimensions.Both mathematical derivations and experimental analyses demonstrate that the fractal dimension of a forest stand is equal to that of the tree with the largest fractal dimension in it,manifesting its nonscalability from individual trees to forest stands.The nonscalability of fractal dimension reveals its limited capability in canopy structural complexity quantification and indicates that the power-law scaling theory of a forest stand underlying fractal geometry is determined by its dominant tree instead of the entire community.Nevertheless,we believe that fractal dimension is still a useful indicator of canopy structural complexity at the individual tree level and might be used along with other stand-level indexes to reflect the“tree-to-stand”correlation of canopy structural complexity. | Xiaoqiang Liu Qin Ma Xiaoyong Wu Tianyu Hu Guanhua Dai Jin Wu Shengli Tao Shaopeng Wang Lingli Liu Qinghua Guo Yanjun Su | 2022 | Journal of Remote Sensing2022,,1: | 0 |
