This paper presents a comprehensive review of these studies, which summarizes wear mechanisms(e.g., abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and adhesive wear) and debris features(e.g., concentration(number), size, morphology, and composition), analyzes detection methods principles(e.g., offline: spectrograph and ferrograph, and online: optical method, inductive method, resistive-capacitive method, and acoustic method),reviews developments of online inductive methods, and investigates the progress of debris-based diagnosis. | 6 | Variations of oceanic fronts and their influence on the fishing grounds of Ommastrephes bartramii in the Northwest Pacific显示文摘Two predominant currents, the warm Kuroshio Current and the cold Oyashio Current, meet in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. The dynamics of physical oceanographic structures in this region, including frontal zones and meandering eddies, result in a highly productive habitat that serves as a favorable feeding ground for various commercially important species. Neon flying squid, Ommastrephes bartramii, is an important oceanic squid, which is widely distributed in the North Pacific Ocean. Based on the catch data collected by Chinese squid jigging fleets and relevant environmental data, including sea surface temperature(SST) and fronts(represented by gradients of SST and thermocline) during 1998–2009, the variations of oceanic fronts and their influence on the fishing grounds of O. bartramii were evaluated, and the differences in distribution of fishing grounds of O. bartramii in 2000 and 2002 were compared by describing the differences in vertical temperature between 0–300 m. It was found that the preferred horizontal temperature gradient of SST for O. bartramii tended to be centered at 0.01–0.02°C/nm, which attracted nearly 80% of the total fishing effort, and the preferred horizontal temperature gradients at the 50 m and 105 m layers were mainly located at 0.01–0.03°C/nm, which accounted for more than 70% of the total fishing effort during August–October. The preferred vertical temperature gradient within the 0–50 m layer for O. bartramii tended to be centered at 0.15–0.25°C/m during August and September and at 0.10–0.15°C/m in October, implying that the mixed surface layer was distributed at depths of 0–50 m. It was concluded that the vertical temperature gradient was more important than the horizontal temperature gradient in playing a role in forming the fishing ground. | 8 | Recognition of climatic effects of land use/land cover change under global warming显示文摘Greenhouse gas emissions and land use/land cover change(LUCC)are two human activities notably affecting climate change.Will temperature and precipitation increase significantly during global warming resulting in more pronounced LUCC climatic effects?Considering the interannual forcing of these two factors,the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model(CAM4.0)was used in this study to investigate the importance of climatological background to LUCC impacts.Experiments based on the difference in the background climate,the greenhouse gas concentrations in 1850 and in the present age indicate contrary changes in climate sensitivity through estimations of the radiative forcing associated with LUCC,which are 0.54°C/(W/m2)and 0.26°C/(W/m2),respectively.Therefore,the background climate appears to play an important role in the regional impact of LUCC,especially at higher latitudes.In addition,global warming predominantly influences snow-albedo feedback in the mid-latitudes,thus determining the impact of LUCC,whereas the regional difference in precipitation caused by global warming is responsible for the differing climate response to LUCC in the tropics and subtropics. | HUA WenJian CHEN HaiShan | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,31: | 10 |
| 9 | Chaotic laser synchronization and its application in optical fiber secure communication显示文摘In this paper, optical fiber chaotic secure communication is proposed by coupling chaotic laser synchronous system with optical fiber propagation channel. Feedback synchronous system of chaotic semiconductor lasers is presented and synchronous error and decoding formulae are demonstrated. Synchronization between two chaotic laser systems with distributed feedback semiconductor lasers at wavelength of 1.31 μm is simulatively achieved with almost zero synchronous error. Parameter mismatch, synchronous transient response and noise effect on the system are studied. Robustness of synchronization and anti-perturbation can increase by increasing the feedback coefficient of the system. Influence of group-velocity-dispersion and self-phase modulation of optical fiber on chaotic laser signal and synchronization are analyzed, and it is found that group-velocity-dispersion affects pulse shape, synchronization and decodin gand limits optical fiber propagation distances, and self-phase modulation does not affect pulse shape, while its product of nonlinear phase shift can affect synchronization and decoding, and restrict propagation distances of optical fiber chaotic communication system and hence the maximum optical power formula is educed. | 10 | Carbon and oxygen isotopes analyses for the Sinian carbonates in the Helan Mountain, North China显示文摘We conducted detailed studies of the Sinian carbonates from the Helan Mountain,Ningxia by both field investigation and laboratory analyses of carbon and oxygen isotopes.The carbon isotopic compositions of the Sinian Zhengmuguan Formation shows variations with regularity in the five studied sections,theδ13C values all gradually decrease from bottom to top,with a total range from 4.51‰to 0.11‰,and the biggest negative excursion reaches up to 6.88‰.In addition,abundant macro-body fossils were also found from the Tuerkeng Formation in this study,similar to those found from the Dengying Formation in the South China Block.This observation firmly constrained the age for the Zhengmuguan and Tuerkeng formations to the Sinian period.Here we interpreted that the Zhengmuguan Formation formed during a glacial period when the extremely cold climate substantially decreased the amount of burial of organic matter in the ocean and thus led to the general negativeδ13C excursion.The increasingδ13C values in the Tuerkeng Formation dolomites imply the ending of the glacial period in the Zhengmuguan epoch,biological recovery and increase of organic matter burial in the ocean occurred during this period.Comparing our obtained carbon and oxygen isotopes of the Zhengmuguan and Tuerkeng formations with those of coeval carbonate successions from other places all over the world,the Zhengmuguang-aged glacial deposits might be deposited after the Gaskiers glaciation.This study provides important information for paleo-ocean,paleogeographic and biological evolution in the North China Block during the Ediacaran period and adds new carbon and oxygen isotopes data for the global Sinian carbon-oxygen isotopes dataset. | YANG Jie ZENG ZuoXun CAI XiongFei LI ZhiYong LI TianBin MENG Fang HE WenJian | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,32: | 8 |
| 11 | Effects of Jisuikang on hemorheology and inflammatory factors in rats following spinal cord injury显示文摘BACKGROUND:Trauma can damage the spinal cord or cauda equina to different degrees. Previous studies have verified that traditional Chinese medicine has effects on spinal cord injury via a variety of pathways. OBJECTIVE:To observe changes in hemorheology and inflammatory factors in spinal cord injury rats following treatment with the Chinese medicine Jisuikang,to verify the dose-dependent effect of Jisuikang,and to compare its effects with the effects of prednisone. DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING: A randomized study was performed at the Research Institute of Orthopedics,and Experimental Center of First Clinical Medical College,Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine,China from September 2007 to March 2008. MATERIALS: Jisuikang powdered extract,composed of milkvetch root (30g),Chinese angelica (12g),red peony root (12g),earthworm (10g),szechwan lovage rhizome (10g),peach seed (10g) and safflower (10g),was provided by the Experimental Center,First Clinical Medical College,Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese medicine. Each gram of powdered extract was equivalent to 6.47 g crude drug. METHODS: A total of 72 Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into 6 groups (n = 12). Rat models of spinal cord injury were established using the occlusion method. Rats in the model group were treated with distilled water. Rats in the 25 g/kg,12.5 g/kg,and 6.25 g/kg Jisuikang groups were given 25 g/kg,12.5 g/kg,or 6.25 g/kg Jisuikang by gavage,for 14 days. Rats in the prednisone group received 0.06 g/kg prednisone by gavage,for 7 days. Rats in the normal group were given the same volume of distilled water. The volume of administration was 15 mL/kg. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Rat serum interleukin-10,tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α),nitric oxide,nitric oxide synthase levels,malondialdehyde content,superoxide dismutase activity and whole blood viscosity were measured in each group. Spinal cord around the site of the model was collected. Half the spinal cord was used for histopathologic examination. The other half was used for measurement of nitric oxide and NOS levels,malondialdehyde contents,and superoxide dismutase activity. RESULTS: Superoxide dismutase activity was higher in the 25 g/kg Jisuikang group than in the model group. Malondialdehyde contents,nitric oxide and NOS levels were lower in the 25 g/kg and 12.5 g/kg Jisuikang groups compared with the model group. Whole blood viscosity was lower in the 25 g/kg and 12.5 g/kg Jisuikang groups compared with the model group (P < 0.05-0.01). Serum TNF-αcontent was lower in each Jisuikang group compared with the model group (P < 0.05-0.01). Serum interleukin-10 levels were greater in the prednisone group and each Jisuikang group compared with the model group (P < 0.01). Mild hemorrhage and necrosis in the rat spinal cord,and unclear neural cell swelling were seen in the 25 g/kg Jisuikang group. Severe hemorrhage and necrosis in the rat spinal cord,and distinct neural cell swelling were seen in the 12.5 g/kg Jisuikang group. Edema in the white matter was found in the 6.25 g/kg Jisuikang group. Pathological changes in the prednisone group were identical to the 25 g/kg and 12.5 g/kg Jisuikang groups. CONCLUSION: Jisuikang inhibits nitric oxide synthase expression,reduces nitric oxide and TNF-α levels,decreases malondialdehyde content,increases interleukin-10 levels and superoxide dismutase activity,improves indices of hemorheology,and prevents secondary changes in spinal cord injury,resulting in relieving pathological changes in spinal cord tissue. | 12 | Effects of future land use change on the regional climate in China显示文摘Land use and land cover change(LUCC)is one of the important human forcing on climate.However,it is difficult to infer how LUCC will affect climate in the future from the effects of previous LUCC on regional climates in the past.Thus,based on the land cover data recommended by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5(CMIP5),a regional climate model(Reg CM4)was used to investigate the climate effects of future land use change over China.Two 15-year simulations(2036–2050),one with the current land use data and the other with future land cover scenario(2050)were conducted.It is noted that future LUCC in China is mainly characterized by the transition from the grassland to the forest.Results suggest that the magnitudes and ranges of the changes in temperature and precipitation caused by future LUCC show evident seasonality,which are more prominent in summer and autumn.Significant response of climate to future LUCC mainly happens in Northeast China,North China,the Hetao Area,Eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and South China.Further investigation shows that future LUCC can also produce significant impacts on the atmospheric circulation.LUCC results in abnormal southwesterly wind over extensive areas from the Indian peninsula to the coasts of the South China Sea and South China through the Bay of Bengal.Furthermore,Indian tropical southwest monsoons and South Sea southwest monsoons will both be strong,and the abnormal water vapor convergence from the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean will result in more precipitation in South China. | HUA WenJian CHEN HaiShan LI Xing | 2015 | Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,10: | 8 |

| 16 | Hotspots of the sensitivity of the land surface hydrological cycle to climate change显示文摘Due to the shortage of the global observational data of the terrestrial hydrological variables,the understanding of how surface hydrological processes respond to climate change is still limited.In this study,the Community Land Model(CLM4.0)with high resolution atmospheric forcing data is selected to simulate the global surface hydrological quantities during the period 1948–2006and to investigate the spatial features of these quantities in response to climate change at the regional scales.The sensitivities of evaporation and runoff with respect to the dominant climate change factors(e.g.temperature and precipitation)derived from the concept of climate elasticity are introduced.Results show that evaporation has a declining trend with a rate of 0.7 mm per decade,while runoff shows a weak increasing trend of 0.15 mm per decade over the global land surface.Analyses of the hotspots in the hydrological cycle indicate that the spatial distributions for evaporation and runoff are similar over many areas in central Asia,Australia,and southern South America,but differ largely in high latitudes.It is also found that,the evaporation hotspots in arid regions are mainly associated with the changes in precipitation.Our sensitive analysis suggests that the hydrological quantities show a rather complicated spatial dependency of response of the water cycle to the different climate factors(temperature and precipitation). | HUA WenJian CHEN HaiShan ZHU SiGuang SUN ShanLei YU Miao ZHOU LiMing | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,30: | 7 |
| 17 | Experimental Study on Wear and Spalling Behaviors of Railway Wheel显示文摘The current researches of the wear and spalling behaviors of wheel/rail materials focus on the field investigation rather than the mechanism.However,it is necessary and significant for clarifying the mechanism and relationship between the wear and spalling damage of railway wheel to test and reproduce the wheel damages in laboratory.The objective of this paper is to investigate the wear and spalling damage behaviors of railway wheel using a JD-1 wheel/rail simulation facility,which consists of a small wheel serving as rolling stock wheel,and a larger wheel serving as rail.The damage process of wheel roller is explored in terms of the creep ratio,axle load,and carbon content by means of various microscopic examinations.The experimental results show that the wear volume growth of wheel roller is proved to be proportional to the increase of the creep ratio and normal load between simulating wheel and rail.The increase of carbon content of wheel material causes a linear reduction in the wear volume.The microscopic examinations indicate that the rolling wear mechanism transfers from abrasive wear to adhesive and fatigue wear with an increase of tangential friction force,which results in the initiation of fatigue crack,and then aggravates spalling damage on the wheel roller surface.The surface hardness of material depends strongly upon its carbon content.The decrease of the carbon content of wheel material may alleviate spalling damage,but can cause a significant growth in the wear volume of wheel roller.Therefore,there is a competitive relationship between the wear and spalling damage of wheel material.This research proposes an important measure for alleviating or preventing the wear and spalling damage of railway wheel material. | WANG Wenjian GUO Jun LIU Qiyue | 2013 | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2013,26,6: | 7 |
| 18 | A model for accurately calculating hyper-spectral, middle-shortwave infrared radiative transfer for remote sensing显示文摘Although the calculation of radiative transfer in the middle-shortwave infrared band is important in the field of optical remote sensing, studies in this area of research are rare in China. Both solar reflection and atmospheric emission should be considered when calculating radiative transfer in the middle-shortwave infrared band. This paper presents a new radiative transfer model based on the doubling and adding method. The new model uses approximate calculations of direct solar reflection,multiple scattering, and thermal emissions for a finitely thin atmospheric layer and considers both the solar and thermal sources of radiation. To verify its accuracy, the calculation results produced by the model for four typical scenarios(single layer at night,multi-layer aerosols, double-layer with ice and water clouds, and multi-layer with clouds and aerosols) were compared with those of the DISORT model. With the exception of a few channels, the absolute deviation between the two models was less than2×10^(-6) K. For the same calculation, the computation speed of the new model was approximately two to three times faster than that of the DISORT model. Sensitivity studies were performed to evaluate the error resulting from using simplified calculation methods in the new model. The results obtained in this study indicated that atmospheric thermal emission made a significant contribution to the measured radiance in the strong-absorption band(2230–2400 cm^(-1)), whereas solar radiation could be neglected in this region. However, neglecting solar radiation in the window region(2400–2580 cm^(-1)) introduced error on the order of dozens of K. Employing the average-layer temperature method simplified the calculation of thermal radiation but caused a larger error in the strong-absorption band than in the window region. In the doubling and adding method, the calculation error decreased as the value used for minimum optical thickness decreased. Under the condition of satisfying the requirement of calculation precision, we can consider using the layer-average temperature radiation method and selecting a relative larger minimum optical thickness value to improve the calculation efficiency. | 19 | Geochronology and geochemistry of Permo-Triassic sandstones in eastern Jilin Province(NE China): Implications for final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean显示文摘In the eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB) in northeastern(NE) China, scattered outcrops of molasse deposits mark the ending of an orogeny and are crucial for understanding the evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean(PAO). However, the timing of tectonic events and the relationships among these strata remain controversial. To better constrain these geologic events, a comprehensive study of the detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology and geochemistry of the sandstones of the Kaishantun(KST) Formation and Kedao(KD) Group in eastern Jilin Province, NE China, was conducted. The KST Formation is traditionally considered a molasse deposit. The sandstones display low CIA, PIA and high ICV values and low Th/U and Rb/Sr ratios, which suggest that the rocks were derived from an immature intermediate-felsic igneous source and experienced a simple sedimentary recycling history with relatively weak chemical weathering. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from two samples of the KST Formation yields ages of 748-252 Ma, suggesting that the KST Formation was deposited between 254.5 Ma and 252 Ma in Late Permian. The zircons were mainly derived from the continental northern part of the North China Craton(NCC). In contrast, the U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from five samples of the KD Group yields ages of 2611-230 Ma, suggesting that the KD samples were deposited in the Early to Middle Triassic(ca. 248-233 Ma). The detrital zircon ages for the KD samples can be divided into groups with peaks at 2.5 Ga, 1.8 Ga, 800-1000 Ma, 500 Ma and 440-360 Ma, which suggest that the samples were derived from bidirectional provenances in the Jiamusi-Khanka Block and the NCC. These new data,combined with previously published results, suggest that at least three orogenic events occurred in central-eastern Jilin Province during the Early Permian(270-262 Ma), Early Triassic(254-248 Ma) and Middle-Late Triassic(242-227 Ma). The final closure of the PAO occurred during 242-227 Ma in the Middle-Late Triassic along the Changchun-Yanji suture zone.
