1Epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori among multiracial community in Northern Peninsular,Malaysia:effect of age across race and gender显示文摘Objective:To study the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) infection according to age group.Methods:H.pylori infection data among 1 965 consecutive patients referred to the Endoscopy Unit collected at Sungai Petani Hospital for oesophagogastro-duodenoscopy(OGD). The patients were divided into 9 age groups(10-19,20-29,30-39,40-49,50-59,60-69,70-79, 80-89 and 90-99 years).In addition these groups were further divided into three minor group namely young adults(10-39),older adults(40-69) and geriatric groups(70-99).Results:Overall prevalence of infection of H.pylori was analyzed and found that the prevalence increase with age (P<0.05).When the patients divided by ethnic and gender group with age,prevalence rate among young adults and older adults significantly higher(P<0.05) compared to geriatric groups across all races and gender(P<0.05).Furthermore,significantly higher number of males were infected compared to female(P<0.05) but such trend was only observed among older adult groups.In addition,there is a significant differences in H.pylori infection prevalence rates among ethnic groups(highest in Indians adults,followed Chinese and low in Malays,P<0.05).Conclusions: The overall prevalence of H.pylori did increase with age group across ethnicity and gender,in Northern Peninsular Malaysia.Sreenivasan Sasidharan Subramanion Jo Thy Lachumy Manickam Ravichandran Lachimanan Yoga Latha Surasa Rao Surya Gegu 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,1:11
2Antimicrobial drug resistance of Staphylococcus aureus in dairy products显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the prevalence of multidrug resistant Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) in dairy products.Methods:Isolation and identification of S.aureus were performed in 3 dairybased food products.The isolates were tested for their susceptibility to 5 different common antimicrobial drugs.Results:Of 50 samples examined,5(10%) were contaminated with 5. aureus.Subsequently,the 5 isolates were subjected to antimicrobial resistance pattern using five antibiotic discs(methicillin,vancomycin,kanamycin,chloramphenicol and tetracycline).Sample 29 showed resistance to methicillin and vancomycin.Sample 18 showed intermediate response to tetracycline.The other samples were susceptible to all the antibiotics tested.Conclusions:The results provide preliminary data on sources of food contamination which may act as vehicles for the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus.Therefore,it enables us to develop preventive strategies to avoid the emergence of new strains of resistant S.aureus.Sasidharan S Prema B Yoga Latha L 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,2:10
3Antioxidant activity and phytochemical screening of the methanol extracts of Euphorbia hirta L显示文摘Objective:To assess antioxidant activities of different parts of Euphorbia hirta(E.hirta),and to search for new sources of safe and inexpensive antioxidants.Methods:Samples of leaves,stems, flowers and roots from E.hirta were tested for total phenolic content,and flavonoids content and in vitro antioxidant activity by diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) assay and reducing power was measured using cyanoferrate method.Results:The leaves extract exhibited a maximum DPPH scavenging activity of(72.96±0.78)%followed by the flowers,roots and stems whose scavenging activities were(52.45±0.66)%,(48.59±0.97)%,and(44.42±0.94)%,respectively.The standard butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT) was(75.13±0.75)%.The IC50,for leaves,flowers,roots,stems and BHT were 0.803,0.972,0.989,1.358 and 0.794 mg/mL,respectively.The reducing power of the leaves extract was comparable with that of ascorbic acid and found to be dose dependent. Leaves extract had the highest total phenolic content[(206.17±1.95) mg GAE/g],followed by flowers,roots and stems extracts which were(117.08±3.10) mg GAE/g,(83.15±1.19) mg GAE/g,and (65.70±1.72) mg GAE/g,respectively.On the other hand,total flavonoids content also from leave had the highest value[(37.970±0.003) mg CEQ/g],followed by flowers,roots and stems extracts which were(35.200±0.002) mg CEQ/g,(24.350±0.006) mg CEQ/g,and(24.120±0.004) mg CEQ/ g,respectively.HPTLC bioautography analysis of phenolic and antioxidant substance revealed phenolic compounds.Phytochemical screening of E.hirta leaf extract revealed the presence of reducing sugars,terpenoids,alkaloids,steroids,tannins,flavanoids and phenolic compounds. 4Effect of probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum Dad-13 powder consumption on the gut microbiota and intestinal health of overweight adults显示文摘BACKGROUND Shifting on lifestyle,diet,and physical activity contributed on increasing number of obese people around the world.Multiple factors influence the development of obesity.Some research suggested that gut microbiota(GM)plays an important role in nutrient absorption and energy regulation of individuals,thus affecting their nutritional status.Report of Indonesia Basic Health Research showed that the prevalence of obesity in every province tended to increase.Although the root cause of obesity is excessive calorie intake compared with expenditure,the differences in gut microbial ecology between healthy and obese humans may affect energy homeostasis.GM affect body weight,especially obesity.Probiotics that are consumed while alive and able to colonize in the intestine are expected to increase the population of good bacteria,especially Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli,and suppress pathogens such as Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus.The strain of L.plantarum Dad-13 has been demonstrated to survive and colonize in the gastrointestinal tract of healthy Indonesian adults who consume fermented milk containing L.plantarum Dad-13.The consumption of probiotic L.plantarum Dad-13 powder decreased E.coli and non-E.coli coliform bacteria in school-aged children in Indonesia.L.plantarum is a dominant bacterium in the average Indonesian’s GM.For this reason,this bacterium is probably a more suitable probiotic for Indonesians.AIM To determine the effect of the consumption of indigenous probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum Dad-13 powder in overweight adults in Yogyakarta(Indonesia).METHODS Sixty overweight volunteers with a body mass index(BMI)equal to or greater than 25 consume indigenous probiotic powder L.plantarum Dad-13(2×109 CFU/gram/sachet)for 90 d.The study was a randomized,double-blind,placebocontrolled study.The volunteers filled in a diary on a daily basis,which consisted of questions on study product intake(only during ingestion period),other food intake,number of bowel movements,fecal quality(consistency and color),any medications received,and any symptom of discomfort,such as diarrhea,constipation,vomiting,gassing,sensation of illness,etc.Fecal samples and the subjects’diaries were collected on the morning of day 10+1,which was marked as the end of the baseline period and the start of the ingestion period.During the ingestion period(from day 11 to day 101),several parameters to measure and analyze the results included body weight and height(once a month),the lipid profile,GM analysis using MiSeq,short-chain fatty acid(SCFA)analysis using gas chromatography,and the measurement of fecal pH using a pH meter.RESULTS The consumption of indigenous probiotic powder L.plantarum Dad-13 caused the average body weight and BMI of the probiotic group to decrease from 84.54±17.64 kg to 83.14±14.71 kg and 33.10±6.15 kg/m2 to 32.57±5.01 kg/m2,respectively.No significant reduction of body weight and BMI in the placebo group was observed.An analysis of the microbiota showed that the number of Bacteroidetes,specifically Prevotella,increased significantly,while that of Firmicutes significantly decreased.No significant change in lipid profile in both groups was found.Also,no significant change in SCFAs(e.g.,butyrate,propionate,acetic acid)and pH level was found after the consumption of the probiotic.CONCLUSION No significant differences in pH before and after ingestion were observed in both the probiotic and placebo groups as well as in the lipid profile of both cholesterol and triglyceride,high-density lipoprotein(HDL),low-density lipoprotein(LDL),and the LDL/HDL ratio.In addition,no significant changes in the concentration of SCFAs(e.g.,acetic acid,propionate,and butyrate)were found after consumption.Interestingly,a significant decrease in body weight and BMI(P<0.05)was determined in the treatment group.An analysis of GM shows that L.plantarum Dad-13 caused the Firmicutes population to decrease and the Bacteroidetes population(especially Prevotella)to increase.Endang Sutriswati Rahayu Mariyatun Mariyatun Nancy Eka Putri Manurung Pratama Nur Hasan Phatthanaphong Therdtatha Riko Mishima Husnita Komalasari Nurul Ain Mahfuzah Fathyah Hanum Pamungkaningtyas Wahyu Krisna Yoga Dina Aulia Nurfiana Stefanie Yolanda Liwan Mohammad Juffrie Agung Endro Nugroho Tyas Utami 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,1:6

11Tensile mechanical analysis of anisotropy and velocity dependence of the spinal cord white matter:a biomechanical study显示文摘In spinal cord injuries,external forces from various directions occur at various velocities.Therefore,it is important to physically evaluate whether the spinal cord is susceptible to damage and an increase in internal stress for external forces.We hypothesized that the spinal cord has mechanical features that vary under stress depending on the direction and velocity of injury.However,it is difficult to perform experiment because the spinal cord is very soft.There are no reports on the effects of multiple external forces.In this study,we used bovine spinal cord white matter to test and analyze the anisotropy and velocity dependence of the spinal cord.Tensile-vertical,tensile-parallel,shear-vertical,and shear-parallel tests were performed on the white matter in the fibrous direction(cranial to caudal).Strain rate in the experiment was 0.1,1,10,and 100/s.We calculated the Young’s modulus of the spinal cord.Results of the tensile and shear tests revealed that stress tended to increase when external forces were applied parallel to the direction of axon fibers,such as in tensile-vertical and shear-vertical tests.However,external forces those tear against the fibrous direction and vertically,such as in tensile-parallel and shear-parallel tests,were less likely to increase stress even with increased velocity.We found that the spinal cord was prone to external forces,especially in the direction of the fibers,and to be under increased stress levels when the velocity of external forces increased.From these results,we confirmed that the spinal cord has velocity dependence and anisotropy.The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Yamaguchi University waived the requirement for ethical approval.Norihiro Nishida Itsuo Sakuramoto Yoshihiro Fujii Rudolf Yoga Hutama Fei Jiang Junji Ohgi Yasuaki Imajo Hidenori Suzuki Masahiro Funaba Xian Chen Takashi Sakai 2021Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,12:1
