| 2 | Isotopic evidence for the moisture origin and composition of surface runoff in the headwaters of the Heihe River basin显示文摘We investigated the moisture origin and contribution of different water sources to surface runoff entering the headwaters of the Heihe River basin on the basis of NECP/NCAR(National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research) re-analysis data and variations in the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios(δ D and δ 18O) of precipitation,spring,river,and melt water. The similar seasonality in precipitation δ 18O at different sites reveals the same moisture origin for water entering the headwaters of the Heihe River basin. The similarity in the seasonality of δ 18O and d-excess for precipitation at Yeniugou and Urumchi,which showed more positive δ 18O and lower d-excess values in summer and more negative δ 18O and higher d-excess values in winter,indicates a dominant effect of westerly air masses in summer and the integrated influence of westerly and polar air masses in winter. Higher d-excess values throughout the year for Yeniugou suggest that in arid inland areas of northwestern China,water is intensively recycled. Temporal changes in δ 18O,δ D,and d-excess reveal distinct contributions of different bodies of water to surface runoff. For example,there were similar trends for δ D,δ 18O,and d-excess of precipitation and river water from June to September,similar δ 18O trends for river and spring water from December to February,and similar trends for precipitation and runoff volumes. However,there were significant differences in δ 18O between melt water and river water in September. | 6 | Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells repair spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury by promoting axonal growth and anti-autophagy显示文摘Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can differentiate into neurons and astrocytes after transplantation in the spinal cord of rats with ischemia/reperfusion injury. Although bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells are known to protect against spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury through anti-apoptotic effects, the precise mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were cultured and proliferated, then transplanted into rats with ischemia/reperfusion injury via retro-orbital injection. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence with subsequent quantification revealed that the expression of the axonal regeneration marker, growth associated protein-43, and the neuronal marker, microtubule-associated protein 2, significantly increased in rats with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation compared with those in rats with spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury. Furthermore, the expression of the autophagy marker, microtubule-associated protein light chain 3B, and Beclin 1, was significantly reduced in rats with the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation compared with those in rats with spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury. Western blot analysis showed that the expression of growth associated protein-43 and neurofilament-H increased but light chain 3B and Beclin 1 decreased in rats with the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation. Our results therefore suggest that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation promotes neurite growth and regeneration and prevents autophagy. | 7 | Western medication plus Traditional Chinese Medicine preparations in patients with chronic heart failure:a prospective,single-blind,randomized,controlled,and multicenter clinical trial显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety in patients with chronic heart failure(CHF) of Western medication plus Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) preparations.METHODS: This prospective, single-blind, randomized, controlled, and multicenter clinical trial began on September 17, 2008, and was completed on June 25, 2011. A total of 340 inpatients, aged 40-79 years, with exacerbating CHF from 10 hospitals were enrolled and randomly allocated within 24 h of admission. The trial included three intervention periods. During hospitalization, the control group received western medication for CHF and the treatment group received Danhong injection with Shenfu injection or Shenmai injection. After discharge,all patients were treated with Qiliqiangxin capsules and Buyiqiangxin tablets or a placebo for 6 months. After the 6-month intervention, both groups received only continuous western medication. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality.The efficacy assessments were as follows: B-type natriuretic peptide(BNP), Lee's HF score, the 6-minute walking test(6 MWT), left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF), and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire(MLHFQ). The safety assessments were as follows: blood and urine routine examination, hepatic and renal function, electrolytes in blood and adverse events.RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the treatment group showed a 30.99% reduction in all-cause mortality and an improved survival rate.The treatment group showed greater improvement in 6 MWT(P = 0.02) than the control group on discharge, after 12-month follow-up, there was a time-group interaction for MLHFQ(P = 0.03). | 10 | Conservation metagenomics: a new branch of conservation biology显示文摘Multifaceted approaches are required to monitor wildlife populations and improve conservation efforts. In the last decade,increasing evidence suggests that metagenomic analysis offers valuable perspectives and tools for identifying microbial communities and functions. It has become clear that gut microbiome plays a critical role in health, nutrition, and physiology of wildlife, including numerous endangered animals in the wild and in captivity. In this review, we first introduce the human microbiome and metagenomics, highlighting the importance of microbiome for host fitness. Then, for the first time, we propose the concept of conservation metagenomics, an emerging subdiscipline of conservation biology, which aims to understand the roles of the microbiota in evolution and conservation of endangered animals. We define what conservation metagenomics is along with current approaches, main scientific issues and significant implications in the study of host evolution, physiology,nutrition, ecology and conservation. We also discuss future research directions of conservation metagenomics. | 14 | Vertical Migration of Fine-Grained Sediments from Interior to Surface of Seabed Driven by Seepage Flows–‘Sub-Bottom Sediment Pump Action'显示文摘A scientific hypothesis is proposed and preliminarily verified in this paper: under the driving of seepage flows, there might be a vertical migration of fine-grained soil particles from interior to surface of seabed, which is defined as ‘sub-bottom sediment pump action' in this paper. Field experiments were performed twice on the intertidal flat of the Yellow River delta to study this process via both trapping the pumped materials and recording the pore pressures in the substrate. Experimental results are quite interesting as we did observe yellow slurry which is mainly composed of fine-grained soil particles appearing on the seabed surface; seepage gradients were also detected in the intertidal flat, under the action of tides and small wind waves. Preliminary conclusions are that ‘sediment pump' occurs when seepage force exceeds a certain threshold: firstly, it is big enough to disconnect the soil particles from the soil skeleton; secondly, the degree of seabed fluidization or bioturbation is big enough to provide preferred paths for the detached materials to migrate upwards. Then they would be firstly pumped from interior to the surface of seabed and then easily re-suspended into overlying water column. Influential factors of ‘sediment pump' are determined as hydrodynamics(wave energy), degree of consolidation, index of bioturbation(permeability) and content of fine-grained materials(sedimentary age). | 15 | Modeling assessment for ammonium nitrogen recovery from wastewater by chemical precipitation显示文摘Chemical precipitation to form magnesium ammonium phosphate(MAP) is an effective technology for recovering ammonium nitrogen(NH4+-N).In the present research,we investigated the thermodynamic modeling of the PHREEQC program for NH4+-N recovery to evaluate the effect of reaction factors on MAP precipitation.The case study of NH4+-N recovery from coking wastewater was conducted to provide a comparison.Response surface methodology(RSM) was applied to assist in understanding the relative significance of reaction factors and the interactive effects of solution conditions.Thermodynamic modeling indicated that the saturation index(SI) of MAP followed a polynomial function of pH.The SI of MAP increased logarithmically with the Mg2+/NH4+ molar ratio(Mg/N) and the initial NH4+-N concentration(CN),respectively,while it decreased with an increase in Ca2+/NH4+ and CO32?/NH4+ molar ratios(Ca/N and CO32?/N),respectively.The trends for NH4+-N removal at different pH and Mg/N levels were similar to the thermodynamic modeling predictions.The RSM analysis indicated that the factors including pH,Mg/N,CN,Ca/N,(Mg/N)×(CO32?/N),(pH)2,(Mg/N)2,and(CN)2 were significant.Response surface plots were useful for understanding the interaction effects on NH4+-N recovery. | Tao Zhang Qiucheng Li Lili Ding Hongqiang Ren Ke Xu Yonggang Wu Dong Sheng | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,6: | 8 |
| 16 | Synergistic effects of Cu species and acidity of Cu-ZSM-5 on catalytic performance for selective catalytic oxidation of n-butylamine显示文摘In this work, a series of Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts with different SiO2/Al2O3 ratios(25, 50, 100 and200) were synthesized and investigated in n-butylamine catalytic degradation. The n-butylamine can be completely catalytic degradation at 350 ℃ over all Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts. Moreover, Cu-ZSM-5(25) exhibited the highest selectivity to N2, exceeding 90% at 350 ℃. These samples were investigated in detail by several characterizations to illuminate the dependence of the catalytic performance on redox properties, Cu species, and acidity. The characterization results proved that the redox properties and chemisorption oxygen primarily affect n-butylamine conversion. N2 selectivity was impacted by the Bronsted acidity and the isolated Cu^2+ species. Meanwhile, the surface acid sites over Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts could influence the formation of Cu species. Furthermore, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra was adopted to explore the reaction mechanism. | 17 | Temporal and spatial variations of stem CO_(2) efflux of three species in subtropical China显示文摘Aims Although stem CO_(2) efflux is critical to ecosystem carbon and energy balance and its feedback to future climate change,little information is available on stem CO_(2) efflux and its responses to temperature,especially in subtropical China.This study aims to(i)evaluate the temporal and spatial variations of stem CO_(2) efflux of three species,including oak(Quercus acutissima Carr.),masson pine(Pinus massoniana Lamb.)and loblolly pine(Pinus taeda Linn.)in subtropical China and(ii)analyze the temperature sensitivity of stem CO_(2) efflux in the three species based on 2-year field measurements.Methods We measured stem CO_(2) efflux and stem temperature(at 3 cm depth)of the three species using the horizontally oriented soil chamber technique from September 2008 to August 2010.We also conducted a 24-h measurement to examine the diurnal variation of stem CO_(2) efflux in three consecutive days in April 2009.Important findings The temporal dynamics of stem CO_(2) efflux followed the change of the stem temperature in a 3-cm depth with a bell-shaped curve in the three species.Stem temperature explained 77–85%of the seasonal variations of stem CO_(2) efflux over the entire study period in the three species.The temperature sensitivity(Q_(10))of stem CO_(2) efflux was obviously different among the three species with higher Q10 value found in oak(2.24)and lower values in the coniferous species(1.76 and 1.63).Our results also showed that the Q10 values of stem CO_(2) efflux in all the three species were lower in the growing season than that in the non-growing season,indicating that the growth and maintenance respiration had different temperature responses.Moreover,we found that the temperature-normalized stem CO_(2) efflux(R_(10))changed greatly between the growing and non-growing seasons in oak and masson pine,but not in loblolly pine.Additionally,we also found that in the non-growing season,the principal factor responsible for the spatial variation of stem CO_(2) efflux among the 15 sampling trees was sapwood volume,whereas in the growing season,stem CO_(2) efflux was closely related to annual dry-matter production in the three subtropical species. | Qingpeng Yang Ming Xu Yonggang Chi Yunpu Zheng Ruichang Shen Peixue Li Huitang Dai | 2012 | Journal of Plant Ecology2012,5,2: | 7 |
| 18 | Gold mineralization age of the Anjiayingzi gold deposit in Chifeng County, Inner Mongolia and implications for Mesozoic metallogenic explosion in North China显示文摘The Anjiayingzi gold deposit in Chifeng County, Inner Mongolia is located in the central part of the gold mineralization belt of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), and is adjacent to the Paleozoic Inner Mongolia-Da Hinggan Mountains orogenic belt in the north. The Chifeng-Kaiyuan fault, which separates the NCC from this orogenic belt, is considered to be a regional ore-controlling structure. The Anjiayingzi gold deposit is a mediate-size quartz lode-gold deposit and is hosted by the Anjiayingzi quartz monzonite that was emplaced into the basement composed of early Precambrian gneisses. Rhyolitic and porphyritic dikes are generally associated with the gold mineralization. Zircon U-Pb analyses suggest that the Anjia- yingzi granite was emplaced from 132 Ma to 138 Ma, while the rhyolitic dikes that occupy the same fracture system as the gold-bearing quartz veins and locally crosscut the gold lodes crystallized from 125 Ma to 127 Ma. These results constrain the mineralization age between 126 Ma and 132 Ma, early Cretaceous time for the Anjiayingzi gold deposit. This mineralization age is consistent with that of the gold deposits in other major gold-bearing areas of the NCC, such as the Jiaodong Peninsula and the Xiaoqinling Mountain, and specially is roughly coeval with the geodynamic reversion of the NCC in Mesozoic. | 20 | A simulation-based two-stage interval-stochastic programming model for water resources management in Kaidu-Konqi watershed,China显示文摘This study presented a simulation-based two-stage interval-stochastic programming(STIP) model to support water resources management in the Kaidu-Konqi watershed in Northwest China.The modeling system coupled a distributed hydrological model with an interval two-stage stochastic programing(ITSP).The distributed hydrological model was used for establishing a rainfall-runoff forecast system,while random parameters were provided by the statistical analysis of simulation outcomes.The developed STIP model was applied to a real case of water resources management planning in Kaidu-Konqi watershed,where three scenarios with different water resources management policies were analyzed.The results indicated that water shortage mainly occurred in agriculture,ecology and forestry sectors.In comparison,the water demand from municipality,industry and stockbreeding sectors can be satisfied due to their lower consumptions and higher economic values.Different policies for ecological water allocation can result in varied system benefits,and can help to identify desired water allocation plans with a maximum economic benefit and a minimum risk of system disruption under uncertainty. | Yue HUANG Xi CHEN YongPing LI AnMing BAO YongGang MA | 2012 | Journal of Arid Land2012,4,4: | 6 |
