11 Gbps free-space deep-ultraviolet communications based on Ⅲ-nitride micro-LEDs emitting at 262 nm显示文摘The low modulation bandwidth of deep-ultraviolet(UV) light sources is considered as the main reason limiting the data transmission rate of deep-UV communications. Here, we present high-bandwidth Ⅲ-nitride microlight-emitting diodes(μLEDs) emitting in the UV-C region and their applications in deep-UV communication systems. The fabricated UV-C μLEDs with 566 μm2 emission area produce an optical power of 196 μW at the 3400 A∕cm2 current density. The measured 3 dB modulation bandwidth of these μLEDs initially increases linearly with the driving current density and then saturates as 438 MHz at a current density of 71 A∕cm2, which is limited by the cutoff frequency of the commercial avalanche photodiode used for the measurement. A deep-UV communication system is further demonstrated. 2PREDICTING THE DEPTH OF EROSION IN RESERVOIRS FOLLOWING DAM REMOVAL USING BANK STABILITY ANALYSIS显示文摘Dam removal has emerged in the U.S. as a critical concern for river management. Of particular interest is predicting the quantity of sediment that will be eroded from a reservoir following dam removal, which necessitates predicting the geometry a channel will approach as it forms in the reservoir. The geometry and sediment characteristics of the Koshkonong River were measured as it adjusted to the removal of the Rockdale Dam. Bank stability modeling was used as a tool for predicting the maximum depth of the evolving channel and general agreement was found between depths predicted with the model and those observed up to one year following dam removal. Model sensitivity analysis showed strong control of bank heights by groundwater levels in the reservoir sediment, as well as some control by vegetation established on the sediment surface. Long-term monitoring is needed to assess the accuracy of the model, but preliminary agreement is encouraging for applying this model and similar models to future dam removals.Martin W. DOYLE Emily H. 16Potential impacts of UV exposure on lichen communities:a pilot study of Nothofagus dombeyi trunks in southernmost Chile显示文摘High-latitude terrestrial ecosystems face the triple threats of climate warming,increased exposure to UV arising from polar ozone depletion,and deforestation.Lichen communities of southernmost Chile are recognized for their high diversity,which includes nitrogen-fixing cyanolichens.Such lichens are common on forest trees,contribute nitrogen to forests,and are sensitive to exposure following deforestation(widespread in this region).In a pilot study of exposure effects on tree lichens,using nondestructive imaging methods,we compared lichen communities on trunks of isolated vs.forest tree trunks of southern Chilean beech(Nothofagus dombeyi,Nothofagaceae).We chose trees of similar diameter and trunk lean angle in conserved forest and nearby logged meadow on Navarino Island,XII Region Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica,Chile,within the annual southern ozone hole.Ninety-five percent of cyanolichen records,including Nephroma antarcticum,and 66%of records for other foliose lichens were from the forest,whereas pendulous usneoid lichens dominated N.dombeyi bark at the meadow site.Limitation of cyanolichen growth on isolated trees could affect ecosystem function in this poorly studied habitat.Possible factors contributing to strong community differences were increased light intensity,UV radiation,and wind stress,plus limited ability of lichens to colonize isolated trees in the logged meadow.UV radiation was likely an important stressor for some lichen species but not others.We recommend more extensive monitoring to pinpoint causes of differing lichen communities,and we encourage better protection of bark-dwelling lichens in southern hemisphere regions facing multiple threats.Marie T.Trest Susan Will-Wolf Rachel Keuler Nathaniel Shay Karen Hill Alyssa Studer Andy Muench Zachary Alexander Axel Adams Leah Dittberner Martin Feehan Hannah Lee Nicholas Galleguillos-Katz Joy B.Zedler Linda Graham Patricia Arancibia-Avila 2015Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2015,1,4:0

19Umbrella Arching and Compensation Grouting in Order to Protect Settlement-Sensitive Buildings over Large Shotcrete Excavations in Gravel显示文摘The Tunnel Oberau, with a length of 2.9 km, forms the core of the local bypass of Oberau. Between the two massifs Kirchbichl and Mühlberg, the tunnel is situated in the valley of the Gießenbach in alluvial gravel with only a small overlap underneath settlement-sensitive buildings. In this paper, the measures in the tunnel to minimize the settlements of the buildings during the shotcrete excavations are described. Basis for this planning were extensive 3D-FE-calculations. Furthermore, under two buildings a compensation grouting measure was carried out, in order to compensate the occurring settlements.
