Spontaneous bacterial and fungal peritonitis in patients with liver cirrhosis: A literature review显示文摘Spontaneous bacterial(SBP) and spontaneous fungal peritonitis(SFP) can be a life-threatening infection in patients with liver cirrhosis(LC) and ascites. One of the possible mechanisms of developing SBP is bacterial translocation. Although the number of polymorphonuclear cells in the culture of ascitic fluid is diagnostic for SBP, secondary bacterial peritonitis is necessary to exclude. The severity of underlying liver dysfunction is predictive of developing SBP; moreover, renal impairment and infections caused by multidrug-resistant(MDR) organism are associated with a fatal prognosis of SBP. SBP is treated by antimicrobials, but initial empirical treatment may not succeed because of the presence of MDR organisms, particularly in nosocomial infections. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for patients with LC at a high risk of developing SBP, gastrointestinal bleeding, or a previous episode of SBP, but the increase in the risk of developing an infection caused by MDR organisms is a serious concern globally. Less is known about SFP in patients with LC, but the severity of underlying liver dysfunction may increase the hospital mortality. SFP mortality has been reported to be higher than that of SBP partially because the difficulty of early differentiation between SFP and SBP induces delayed antifungal therapy for SFP. | Toru Shizuma | 2018 | World Journal of Hepatology2018,10,2: | 35
Management of bacterial and fungal infections in end stage liver disease and liver transplantation: Current options and future directions显示文摘Patients with liver cirrhosis are susceptible to infections due to various mechanisms, including abnormalities of humoral and cell-mediated immunity and occurrence of bacterial translocation from the intestine. Bacterial infections are common and represent a reason for progression to liver failure and increased mortality. Fungal infections, mainly caused by Candida spp., are often associated to delayed diagnosis and high mortality rates. High level of suspicion along with prompt diagnosis and treatment of infections are warranted. Bacterial and fungal infections negatively affect the outcomes of liver transplant candidates and recipients, causing disease progression among patients on the waiting list and increasing mortality, especially in the early posttransplant period. Abdominal, biliary tract, and bloodstream infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria [e.g., Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa)] and Staphylococcus spp. are commonly encountered in liver transplant recipients. Due to frequent exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics, invasive procedures, and prolonged hospitalizations, these patients are especially at risk of developing infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria. The increase in antimicrobial resistance hampers the choice of an adequate empiric therapy and warrants the knowledge of the local microbial epidemiology and the implementation of infection control measures. The main characteristics and the management of bacterial and fungal infections in patients with liver cirrhosis and liver transplant recipients are presented. | Elda Righi | 2018 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2018,24,38: | 22
Spontaneous fungal peritonitis: Epidemiology, current evidence and future prospective显示文摘Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a complication of ascitic patients with end-stage liver disease(ESLD); spontaneous fungal peritonitis(SFP) is a complication of ESLD less known and described. ESLD is associated to immunodepression and the resulting increased susceptibility to infections. Recent perspectives of the management of the critically ill patient with ESLD do not specify the rate of isolation of fungi in critically ill patients, not even the antifungals used for the prophylaxis, neither optimal treatment. We reviewed,in order to focus the epidemiology, characteristics, and, considering the high mortality rate of SFP,the use of optimal empirical antifungal therapy the current literature. | Marco Fiore Sebastiano Leone | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,34: | 19
Incidence of infectious complications is associated with a high mortality in patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure显示文摘BACKGROUND In China, hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) is the most common liver failure characterized by serious clinical syndromes of liver decompensation with a very high mortality.Bacterial and/or fungal infections are the most common complications that are associated with high short-term mortality.Bacterial translocation from the intestine, impaired hepatic clearance, and immune paralysis of circulating immune cells are thought to contribute to infectious complications in liver failure. The control of bacterial and fungal infections is the key to improving HBV-ACLF outcomes.Active prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment of bacterial and fungal infections are essential for treating HBV-ACLF.AIM To investigate the frequency and role of bacterial and fungal infections in patients with HBV-ACLF.METHODS Patients with HBV-ACLF hospitalized at Taihe Hospital,Hubei University of Medicine from January 2014 to December 2017 were retrospectively enrolled.Patient-related information was retrieved from the hospital case database, including general information, blood biochemistry, complications, etc.According to the occurrence of secondary infection or not,the patients were divided into an infection group and a non-infection group. The sites, types, and incidences of bacterial and fungal infections and the influence of infections on the prognosis of HBV-ACLF were statistically analyzed. The risk factors for infections were assessed by unconditional logistic regression.RESULTS There were 174 cases of HBV-ACLF that met the enrollment criteria,of which 114 (65.52%) were diagnosed with infectious complications.Infections occurred in the abdominal cavity (87 cases),respiratory tract (51 cases),urinary tract (18 cases),and biliary tract (10 cases).Patients with infectious complications had a significantly higher 28-d mortality (70.18%,80/114) than those without (40.00%,24/60)(70.18% vs 40.00%,P < 0.05).And patients with infectious complications had a much higher incidence of non-infectious complications (54.39%,62/114)(54.39% vs 15.00%,P < 0.05),leading to an extremely high 28-d mortality of 88.71%(55/62)(P < 0.05).The grade of liver failure, period of hospital stay ≥ 30 d,age ≥ 45 years, and percentage of neutrophils > 70% were identified as risk factors for infectious complications.CONCLUSION The high incidence of infectious complications in patients with HBV-ACLF is associated with severity and deterioration of the disease and may contribute to the extremely high mortality of these patients. | Chen Wang De-Qiang Ma Sen Luo Chuan-Min Wang De-Ping Ding You-You Tian Kang-Jian Ao Yin-Hua Zhang Yue Chen Zhong-Ji Meng | 2019 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2019,7,16: | 18
Changes in fungal community and diversity in strawberry rhizosphere soil after 12 years in the greenhouse显示文摘Soil fungi play a very important role in the soil ecological environment. In agricultural production, long-term monoculture and continuous cropping lead to changes in fungal community diversity. However, the effects of long-term monoculture and continuous cropping on strawberry plant health and fungal community diversity have not been elucidated. In this study, using high-throughput sequencing(HTS), we compared the fungal community and diversity of strawberry rhizosphere soil after various durations of continuous cropping(0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 years). The results showed that soil fungal diversity increased with consecutive cropping years. Specifically, the soil-borne disease pathogens Fusarium and Guehomyces were significantly increased after strawberry continuous cropping, and the abundance of nematicidal(Arthrobotrys) fungi decreased from the fourth year of continuous cropping. The results of correlation analysis suggest that these three genera might be key fungi that contribute to the changes in soil properties that occur during continuous cropping. In addition, physicochemical property analysis showed that the soil nutrient content began to decline after the fourth year of continuous cropping. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that soil pH, available potassium(AK) and ammonium nitrogen(NH_4^+-N) were the most important edaphic factors leading to contrasting beneficial and pathogenic associations across consecutive strawberry cropping systems. | LI Wei-hua LIU Qi-zhi | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2019,18,3: | 15
Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Capacity of Ferulic Acid Released from Wheat Bran by Solid-state Fermentation of Aspergillus niger显示文摘Objective A strain of Aspergillus niger(A. niger), capable of releasing bound phenolic acids from wheat bran, was isolated. This strain was identified by gene sequence identification. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity of ferulic acid released from wheat bran by this A. niger strain(FA-WB) were evaluated. Methods Molecular identification techniques based on PCR analysis of specific genomic sequences were conducted; antioxidant ability was examined using oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC), cellular antioxidant activity(CAA) assays, and erythrocyte hemolysis assays. RAW264.7 cells were used as a model to detect anti-inflammatory activity. Results The filamentous fungal isolate was identified to be A. niger. ORAC and CAA assay showed that FA-WB had better antioxidant activity than that of the ferulic acid standard. The erythrocyte hemolysis assay results suggested that FA-WB could attenuate AAPH-induced oxidative stress through inhibition of reactive oxy gen species(ROS) generation. FA-WB could significantly restore the AAPH-induced increase in intracellular antioxidant enzyme activities to normal levels as well as inhibit the intracellular malondialdehyde formation. TNF-?, IL-6, and NO levels indicated that FA-WB can inhibit the inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS). Conclusion Ferulic acid released from wheat bran by a new strain of A. niger had good anti-inflammatory activity and better antioxidant ability than standard ferulic acid. | YIN Zhi Na WU Wen Jia SUN Chong Zhen LIU Hui Fan CHEN Wen Bo ZHAN Qi Ping LEI Zhuo Gui XIN Xuan MA Juan Juan YAO Kun MIN Tian ZHANG Meng Meng WU Hui | 2019 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2019,32,1: | 14
Impact of anthropogenic activities on the sediment microbial communities of Baiyangdian shallow lake显示文摘Microorganisms are recognized as sensors of external disturbance in freshwater ecosystems. In this study, sediment samples from regions with strong human activity interference(four sites),moderate human activity interference(five sites)and minor human activity interference(five sites)in Baiyangdian Lake were collected;and their physiological and chemical properties and heavy metals contents were analyzed. The structures of bacterial and fungal communities were tested using 16S ribosomal Ribonucleic Acid(rRNA)and Internal Transcribed Spacer 2(ITS2)high-throughput sequencing technologies. The results indicated that Proteobacteria was the most abundant bacterial phylum.Ascomycota,Basidiomycota and Ciliophora were the dominant phyla of fungi.Obvious differences of microbial genera among the three regions were observed, especially fungal genera. With intensified disturbance by human activities, the Simpson and Shannon indices of bacteria significantly decreased. The fungal communities were clustered into three groups in accordance with the different human disturbance levels. The bacterial communities of sediment samples under moderate and minor human disturbance appeared similar, but different from those under strong human disturbance.Redundancy analysis indicated that zinc, total phosphorus, copper, and lead were the dominant factors that influenced the bacterial community.Nitrifiers and sulfate-reducing bacteria were influenced by pH,nitrate(NO3 ),and total nitrogen. The fungal community was significantly affected by total phosphorus. This study reveals that sediment microbial community structures among different regions of a shallow lake are mainly impacted by human activities. | Wenjun Wang Yujun Yi Yufeng Yang Yang Zhou Shanghong Zhang Xuan Wang Zhifeng Yang | 2020 | International Journal of Sediment Research2020,35,2: | 14
Clinical risk score for invasive fungal diseases in patients with hematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy:China Assessment of Antifungal Therapy in Hematological Diseases (CAESAR) study显示文摘Invasive fungal disease (IFD) is a major infectious complication in patients with hematological malignancies. In this study,we examined 4889 courses of chemotherapy in patients with hematological diseases to establish a training dataset (n=3500) by simple random sampling to develop a weighted risk score for proven or probable IFD through multivariate regression, which included the following variables: male patients, induction chemotherapy for newly diagnosed or relapsed disease, neutropenia, neutropenia longer than 10 days,hypoalbuminemia,central-venous catheter, and history of IFD.The patients were classified into three groups, which had low (0-10,~1.2%),intermediate (11-15,6.4%),and high risk (> 15,17.5%) of IFD.In the validation set (n=1389),the IFD incidences of the groups were ~1.4%,5.0%,and 21.4%.In addition,we demonstrated that antifungal prophylaxis offered no benefits in low-risk patients, whereas benefits were documented in intermediate (2.1% vs.6.6%,P=0.007) and high-risk patients (8.4% vs.23.3%,P=0.007).To make the risk score applicable for clinical settings,a pre-chemo risk score that deleted all unpredictable factors before chemotherapy was established, and it confirmed that anti-fungal prophylaxis was beneficial in patients with intermediate and high risk of IFD.In conclusion,an objective, weighted risk score for IFD was developed, and it may be useful in guiding antifungal prophylaxis. | Ling Wang Ying Wang Jiong Hu Yuqian Sun He Huang Jing Chen Jianyong Li Jun Ma Juan Li Yingmin Liang Jianmin Wang Yan Li Kang Yu Jianda Hu Jie Jin Chun Wang Depei Wu Yang Xiao Xiaojun Huang | 2019 | Frontiers of Medicine2019,13,3: | 10

Nitric oxide mediates the fungal elicitor-induced puerarin biosynthesis in Pueraria thomsonii Benth.suspension cells through a salicylic acid(SA)-dependent and a jasmonic acid(JA)-dependent signal pathway显示文摘Nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as a key signaling molecule in plant secondary metabolite biosynthesis recently. In order to investigate the molecular basis of NO signaling in elicitor-induced secondary metabolite biosynthesis of plant cells, we determined the contents of NO, salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and puerarin in Pueraria thomsonii Benth. suspension cells treated with the elicitors prepared from cell walls of Penicillium citrinum. The results showed that the fungal elicitor induced NO burst, SA accumulation and puerarin production of P. thomsonii Benth. cells. The elicitor-induced SA accumulation and puerarin production was suppressed by nitric oxide specific scavenger cPITO, indicating that NO was essential for elicitor-induced SA and puerarin biosynthesis in P. thomsonii Benth. cells. In transgenic NahG P. thomsonii Benth. cells, the fungal elicitor also induced puerarin biosynthesis, NO burst, and JA accumulation, though the SA biosynthe-sis was impaired. The elicitor-induced JA accumulation in transgenic cells was blocked by cPITO, which suggested that JA acted downstream of NO and its biosynthesis was controlled by NO. External application of NO via its donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) enhanced puerarin biosynthesis in trans-genic NahG P. thomsonii Benth. cells, and the NO-triggered puerarin biosynthesis was suppressed by JA inhibitors IBU and NDGA, which indicated that NO induced puerarin production through a JA-dependent signal pathway in the transgenic cells. Exogenous application of SA suppressed the elicitor-induced JA biosynthesis and reversed the inhibition of IBU and NDGA on elicitor-induced pu-erarin accumulation in transgenic cells, which indicated that SA inhibited JA biosynthesis in the cells and that SA might be used as a substitute for JA to mediate the elicitor- and NO-induced puerarin biosynthesis. It was, therefore, concluded that NO might mediate the elicitor-induced puerarin bio-synthesis through SA- and JA-dependent signal pathways in wildtype P. thomsonii Benth. cells and transgenic NahG cells respectively. | XU Maojun1, DONG Jufang1 & ZHU Muyuan2 Department of Biotechnology, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Hangzhou 310035, China State Key Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310012, China | 2006 | Science China(Life Sciences)2006,49,4: | 9
Gastrointestinal motility and absorptive disorders in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases: Prevalence, diagnosis and treatment显示文摘Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD),Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic conditions associated with high morbidity and healthcare costs. The natural history of IBD is variable and marked by alternating periods of flare and remission.Even though the use of newer therapeutic targets has been associated with higher rates of mucosal healing,a great proportion of IBD patients remain symptomatic despite effective control of inflammation. These symptoms may include but not limited to abdominal pain, dyspepsia, diarrhea, urgency, fecal incontinence, constipation or bloating. In this setting, commonly there is an overlap with gastrointestinal(GI)motility and absorptive disorders.Early recognition of these conditions greatly improves patient care and may decrease the risk of mistreatment. Therefore,in this review we describe the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of GI motility and absorptive disorders that commonly affect patients with IBD. | Luísa Leite Barros Alberto Queiroz Farias Ali Rezaie | 2019 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2019,25,31: | 8
Evaluation of maize inbred lines currently used in Chinese breeding programs for resistance to six foliar diseases显示文摘Foliar diseases are common in most maize-producing regions and have caused serious yield reduction in China. To evaluate genetic resistance of parental lines actively used in maize breeding programs to major foliar diseases, 152 maize inbred lines were tested against northern corn leaf blight(NCLB), southern corn leaf blight(SCLB), Curvularia leaf spot(CLS),gray leaf spot(GLS), common rust, and southern rust from 2003 to 2005. A small number of lines exhibited highly resistant reactions to common rust and southern rust, but none were highly resistant to NCLB, SCLB, CLS, and GLS. Although 53.3%, 40.8%, and 80.7% of lines were resistant to NCLB, SCLB, and common rust, the resistance in most lines was moderate.Resistance to CLS, GLS, and southern rust was rare in this collection of maize lines. Five lines,313, Chang 7-2, Qi 319, Qi 318, and Shen 137, were resistant to five diseases tested. Lines belonging to heterotic subgroup PB exhibited better resistance to the foliar diseases than lines from other heterotic subgroups, such as BSSS, PA, Lancaster, LRC, and PA. The results will be of benefit to breeders for selecting lines in disease resistance breeding programs. | Xiaoming Wang Yunhua Zhang Xiude Xu Hongjie Li Xiaofei Wu Shihuang Zhang Xinhai Li | 2014 | The Crop Journal2014,2,4: | 8
Ascomycota has a faster evolutionary rate and higher species diversity than Basidiomycota显示文摘Differences in rates of nucleotide or amino acid substitutions among major groups of organisms are repeatedly found and well documented. A growing body of evidence suggests a link between the rate of neutral molecular change within populations and the evolution of species diversity. More than 98% of terrestrial fungi belong to the phyla Ascomycota or Basidiomycota. The former is considerably richer in number of species than the latter. We obtained DNA sequences of 21 protein-coding genes from the lichenized fungus Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca and used them together with sequences from GenBank for subsequent analyses. Three datasets were used to test rate discrepancies between Ascomycota and Basidiomycota and that within Ascomycota: (i) 13 taxa including 105 protein-coding genes, (ii) nine taxa including 21 protein-coding genes, and (iii) nuclear LSU rDNA of 299 fungal species. Based on analyses of the 105 protein-coding genes and nuclear LSU rDNA datasets, we found that the evolutionary rate was higher in Ascomycota than in Basidiomycota. The differences in substitution rates between Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were significant. Within Ascomycota, the species-rich Sordariomycetes has the fastest evolutionary rate, while Leotiomycetes has the slowest. Our results indicate that the main contribution to the higher substitution rates in Ascomycota does not come from mutualism, ecological conditions, sterility, metabolic rate or shorter generation time, but is possibly caused by the founder effect. This is another example of the correlation between species number and evolutionary rates, which is consistent with the hypothesis that the founder effect is responsible for accelerated substitution rates in diverse clades. | Lumbsch H. | 14 | Spontaneous fungal peritonitis: Micro-organisms, management and mortality in liver cirrhosis-A systematic review显示文摘BACKGROUND Spontaneous peritonitis is an infection of ascitic fluid without a known intraabdominal source of infection. spontaneous fungal peritonitis (SFP) is a potentially fatal complication of decompensated cirrhosis, defined as fungal infection of ascitic fluid in the presence of ascitic neutrophil count of greater than 250 cells/mL. AIM To determine the prevalence of fungal pathogens, management and outcomes (mortality) of SFP in critically ill cirrhotic patients. METHODS Studies were identified using PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scopus databases until February 2019. Inclusion criteria included intervention trials and observation studies describing the association between SFP and cirrhosis. The primary outcome was in-hospital, 1-mo, and 6- mo mortality rates of SFP in cirrhotic patients. Secondary outcomes were fungal microorganisms identified and in hospital management by anti-fungal medications. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute quality assessment tools were used to assess internal validity and risk of bias for each included study. RESULTS Six observational studies were included in this systematic review. The overall quality of included studies was good. A meta-analysis of results could not be performed because of differences in reporting of outcomes and heterogeneity of the included studies. There were 82 patients with SFP described across all the included studies. Candida species, predominantly Candida albicans was the fungal pathogen in majority of the cases (48%-81.8%) followed by Candida krusei (15%- 25%) and Candida glabrata (6.66%-20%). Cryptococcus neoformans (53.3%) was the other major fungal pathogen. Antifungal therapy in SFP patients was utilized in 33.3% to 81.8% cases. The prevalence of in hospital mortality ranged from 33.3% to 100%, whereas 1-mo mortality ranged between 50% to 73.3%. CONCLUSION This systematic review suggests that SFP in end stage liver disease patient is associated with high mortality both in the hospital and at 1-mo, and that antifungal therapy is currently underutilized. | Tooba Tariq Furqan B Irfan Mehdi Farishta Brian Dykstra Eric Martin Sieloff Archita P Desai | 2019 | World Journal of Hepatology2019,11,7: | 7

Mycorrhizal fungal community composition in seven orchid species inhabiting Song Mountain, Beijing, China显示文摘Mycorrhizal fungi play an important role in the germination and growth of orchids essentially influencing their survival, abundance, and spatial distribution. In this study, we investigated the composition of the mycorrhizal fungal community in seven terrestrial orchid species inhabiting Song Mountain, Beijing, China, using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The mycorrhizal communities in the seven orchids were mainly composed of members of the Ceratobasidiaceae, Sebacinales, and Tulasnellaceae, while a number of ectomycorrhizal fungi belonging to the Russulaceae, Tricholomataceae, Thelephoraceae, and Cortinariaceae were occasionally observed. However, the dominant fungal associates and mycorrhizal community differed significantly among the orchid species as well as subhabitats. These findings confirm the previous observation that sympatric orchid species show different preferences for mycorrhizal fungi, which may drive niche partitioning and contribute to their cooccurrence. | Yanhong Chen Yue Gao Linli Song Zeyu Zhao Shunxing Guo Xiaoke Xing | 2019 | Science China(Life Sciences)2019,62,6: | 6
