Potential risks and challenges of climate change in the arid region of northwestern China显示文摘In the arid region of northwestern China(ARNC),water resources are the most critical factor restricting socioeconomic development and influencing the stability of the area’s ecological systems. The region’s complex water system and unique hydrological cycle show distinctive characteristics. Moreover, the intensified hydrological cycle and extreme climatic and hydrological events resulting from global warming have led to increased uncertainty around water resources as well as heightened conflict between water supply and water demand. All of these factors are exerting growing pressures on the socioeconomic development and vulnerable ecological environment in the region. This research evaluates the impacts of climate change on water resources, hydrological processes, agricultural system, and desert ecosystems in the ARNC,and addresses some associated risks and challenges specific to this area. The temperature is rising at a rate of 0.31C per decade during 1961–2017 and hydrological processes are being significantly influenced by changes in glaciers, snow cover, and precipitation form, especially in the rivers recharged primarily by melt water.Ecosystems are also largely influenced by climate change, with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)of natural vegetation exhibited an increasing trend prior to 1998,and then reversed in Xinjiang while the Hexi Corridor of Gansu showed the opposite trends.Furthermore, the desert-oasis transition zone showed a reduction in area due to the warming trend and the recent rapid expansion of irrigated area. Both the warming and intensified drought are threatening agriculture security. The present study could shed light on sustainable development in this region under climate change and provides scientific basis to the construction of the“Silk Road Economic Belt”.Yaning Chen Xueqi Zhang Gonghuan Fang Zhi Li Fei Wang Jingxiu Qin Fan Sun 2020Regional Sustainability2020,1,1:6
Spatial pattern and drivers of urbanization in China's mid-level developing urban agglomeration:A case study of Chang-Zhu-Tan显示文摘Urban agglomeration has become the main form of regional spatial organization in China. While most of the existing studies of urban agglomeration in China have focused on the eastern coastal areas, urban agglomeration with mid-level development in the rest of the country has been overlooke1.To better understand the urbanization process of the mid-level developing urban agglomeration, this study investigated the clustering pattern and the drivers of both urban population and firm dynamics during 2005-2015 in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan(Chang-Zhu-Tan)urban agglomeration of China using the methods ofkernel density estimation and geographic detection. Our results show that centralization was obvious, although decentralization also occurred in Chang-Zhu-Tan,and that the spatial agglomeration was promoted by several factors, such as administrative resources, location advantage, labor cost, and consumption capacity. Some problems hindering the development of this region were also discovered:administrative resources played a critical role in urbanization because small towns and villages did not receive enough attention, and the effect of local policy was not as beneficial as expected. These findings partly explain the relatively slow development of mid-level developing urban agglomerations and have important implications for promoting healthier urbanization.Yanhua He Yi Lin Guohua Zhou Yixuan Zhu Kai Tang 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,1:6
Rural households’livelihood responses to industry-based poverty alleviation as a sustainable route out of poverty显示文摘Industrialization is one way to achieve a sustainable route out of poverty.During the implementation of industry-based poverty alleviation projects, rural households’livelihood responses to change are crucial.A stronger livelihood response is conducive to multidimensional poverty relief due to industry-based poverty alleviation projects.Effective poverty alleviation can also stimulate stronger household responses. There is a positive cycle between livelihood response and multidimensional poverty relief effects that can help achieve sustainable poverty alleviation goals.Using a synergistic perspective on the relationship between“people–industry–land”,this paper explains the poverty alleviation logic connecting livelihood response, multidimensional poverty relief, and sustainable routes out of poverty by constructing a four-dimensional livelihood response measurement system with three elements of intensity. We analyzed survey data collected from 2363 households from 4 sample counties in 4 contiguous poverty-stricken areas, and measured and compared the characteristics of rural households’livelihood responses and the factors influencing poverty alleviation projects.Rural households’livelihood responses in four sample counties were moderate. The four dimensions of responses were ranked as livelihood strategy response, livelihood space response, livelihood output response, and livelihood capital response. The three intensities indicated that the perception and willingness elements of livelihood response were very similar, but there was a big gap between those elements and livelihood response actions. At the group level, poor households had higher and more consistent livelihood response than non-poor households.External environment factors(such as location, industry type, village organizational ability, and village atmosphere)and internal family factors(such as resource endowment, income sources, health, education, labor quantity, policy trust, credit availability, and social networks)had a significant impact on households’livelihood response. However, this impact varied across different dimensions and had different intensities. This paper proposes a multidimensional poverty relief mechanism and suggests sustainable routes out of poverty.Jianjun Ding Zhang Wang Yanhong Liu Fangwei Yu 2020Regional Sustainability2020,1,1:5
Dynamics of NDVI and its influencing factors in the Chinese Loess Plateau during 2002-2018显示文摘Understanding the spatio-temporal changes of vegetation and its climatic control factors can provide an important theoretical basis for the protection and restoration of eco-environments.In this study,we analyzed the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)in the Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP)from 2002 to 2018 via trend analysis, stability analysis, and Mann-Kendall mutation test to investigate the change of vegetation. In addition,we also used the skewness analysis and correlation analysis to explore the contribution of climate change and human activities on regional vegetation changes. The results indicated that the overall increasing trend of NDVI from 2002 to 2018 was significant The areas showing increased NDVI were mainly distributed in the south-eastern CLP and the irrigation districts of the Yellow River to the north and west of the CLP,while the areas showing decreased NDVl were concentrated in the desert of the westem Ordos Plateau,Longzhong Loess Plateau, and the built-up and adjacent areas.Precipitation was the dominant factor contributing to vegetation growth in the CLP,while vegetation was less dependent onprecipitation in the irigation districts. The increasement of NDVI has led to a prolonged responsetime of vegetation to water stress and a lag effect of less than two months in the CLP.The effect of temperature on NDVI was not significant;significant negative correlations between NDVI and temperature were found only in the desert, the Guanzhong Plain, the southem Liupan Mountains, and the southeastem Taihang Mountains, owing to high temperatures, urban heat islands, and large cloud cover in mountainous areas.Affected by the'Grain for Green Program'(GGP),NDVIin the CLP increased from 2002 to 2018;however,the increasing trends of NDNI for differentvegetation cover types were significantly different owing to the difference in background status. The increasing contribution rate of NDVI in the CLP mainly came from crops and steppes.Urban not only led to the destruction of vegetation but also had radiation effect causing negative impact of NDVI around the cities. This resulted in the aggravation of the negative bias of NDVI with time in the CLP.The results provide a long-term perspective for regional vegetation protection and utilization in the CLP.Peng He Lishuai Xu Zhengchun Liu Yaodong Jing Wenbo Zhu 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,1:4
Social development and living environment changes in the Northeast Tibetan Plateau and contiguous regions during the late prehistoric period显示文摘The relationship between the evolution of human societies and their living environments has been discussed intensively in recent decades. It is important to understand the patterns and mechanisms of human–environment interaction and evolution in order to cope with rapidly changing environments in the modern world. We reviewed the results of dating, archaeobotanical, and zooarchaeological studies from 139 prehistoric sites in the Northeast Tibetan Plateau(NETP)and contiguous regions(NETP-CR:i.e.,the Hexi Corridor and western margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau)and compared them with paleoenvironmental records to study variations in spatiotemporal patterns of social development in the area and their relationships with climate and vegetation changes. Our results show that hunter-gatherer groups occupied vast areas of the NETP at low intensities during^15,000–5500 BP(years before present). This was directly related to forest cover and climate change. An increase in temperature and precipitation turnover of vegetation from desert steppe to alpine meadow/subalpine shrub, and recovery of animal population on the Tibetan Plateau created more food resources and space for hunter-gatherers.Millet farmers settled extensively below 2500 m a.s.l.(meters above sea level)in the NETP-CR between^5500 and 3600 BP,and might have coexisted with hunting groups above 2500 m a.s.l.via subsistence exchange. The distribution of human settlements during that period was affected by climate change, with the relatively warm and wet climate promoting the expansion of millet agriculture to the NETP-CR during 5500–4500 BP,while climate deterioration caused humans to retreat to lower altitudes.During 3600–2200 BP,a range of livelihoods emerged in different regions of the NETPCR.This was promoted by early trans-Eurasian exchange and the development of an agro-pastoral economy that utilized cold-tolerant crops and livestock. This eventually promoted the expansion of permanent human settlements to high-altitude areas in the NETP.This study found that human societies adopted various strategies to adapt to the changing living environment throughout late prehistoric times in the NETP-CR.The results provide a long-term perspective on the trajectory of regional socio-environmental co-evolution.Huihui Cao Guanghui Dong 2020Regional Sustainability2020,1,1:4
Trade-offs and synergies of climate change adaptation strategies among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa:A systematic review显示文摘Climate change adaptation strategies provide a cushion for smallholder farmers, especially in subSaharan Africa against the risks posed by climate hazards such as droughts and floods. However, the decision-making process in climate adaptation is complex. To better understand the dynamics of the process,we strive to answer this question:what are the potential trade-offs and synergies related to decision-making and implementation of climate adaptation strategies among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa region?A systematic literature review methodology was used through the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis(PRISMA)statement with the four-stage inclusion/exclusion criteria to identify the literature from selected databases(Scopus and Google Scholar). The climate adaptation strategies are organized into five broad categories(crop management, risk management,soil/land management, water management, and livestock management strategies).Evidence suggests that potential trade-offs may arise concerning added costs, additional labor requirements, and competition among objectives or available resources. The synergies,on the other hand, arise from implementing two or more adaptation strategies concurrently in respect of increased productivity, resilience, yield stability, sustainability, and environmental protection.Trade-offs and synergies may also differ among the various adaptation strategies with minimum/zero tillage, comparatively, presenting more tradeoffs. The development and promotion of low-cost adaptation strategies and complementary climate adaptation options that minimize the trade-offs and maximize the synergies are suggested.Skills and knowledge on proper implementation of climate change adaptation strategies are encouraged, especially at the local farm level.Devinia Princess Akinyi Stanley Karanja Ng’ang’ Evan Hartunian Girvetz 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,2:4
From theme park to cultural tourism town:Disneyization turning of tourism space in China显示文摘Theme park development has become an important choice for tourism space development in Chinese cities, and the theming of space as well as the implied consumption symbols and cultural implications are usually viewed as examples for the development of other urban spaces, such as cultural tourism towns. The result is the Disneyization of urban tourism space. With the construction of characteristic towns being vigorously promoted throughout China, cultural tourism towns are springing up.They are typical of the“Wuzhen Town Mode”and represent the process of the Disneyization of tourism space in China. This research reflects on the evolution of the characteristics of tourism space in China.Taking the Wuzhen Town Mode as an example, this study reveals the characteristics and conversion mechanism of the Disneyization of tourism space in Chinese cities.According to this research, the Wuzhen Town Mode of the Disneyization is characterized by theming, hybrid consumption, merchandising, and performative labor.Residential function is a unique characteristic of the Disneyization of cultural tourism towns in China. Moreover, the Wuzhen Town Mode of the Disneyization is jointly motivated by the driving force of local governments, the propulsive force of tourist demand, the attractive force of the social environment, and the driving force of capital. Finally, suggestions and policy proposals are provided for the Disneyization of tourism space in China.Zi’ang Zhang Zengxian Liang Jigang Bao 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,2:4
Digital mapping of soil salinization based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data combined with machine learning algorithms显示文摘Soil salinization is one of the most important causes of land degradation and desertification, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. The dynamic monitoring of soil salinization is of great significance to land management, agricultural activities, water quality, and sustainable development. The remote sensing images taken by the synthetic aperture radar(SAR)Sentinel-1 and the multispectral satellite Sentinel-2 with high resolution and short revisit period have the potential to monitor the spatial distribution of soil attribute information on a large area;however, there are limited studies on the combination of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 for digital mapping of soil salinization. Therefore,in this study,we used topography indices derived from digital elevation model(DEM),SAR indices generated by Sentinel-1,and vegetation indices generated by Sentinel-2 to map soil salinization in the Ogan-Kuqa River Oasis located in the central and northern Tarim Basin in Xinjiang of China, and evaluated the potential of multi-source sensors to predict soil salinity.Using the soil electrical conductivity(EC)values of 70 ground sampling sites as the target variable and the optimal environmental factors as the predictive variable,we constructed three soil salinity inversion models based on classification and regression tree(CART),random forest(RF),and extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost). Then,we evaluated the prediction ability of different models through the five-fold cross validation. The prediction accuracy of XGBoost model is better than those of CART and RF,and soil salinity predicted by the three models has similar spatial distribution characteristics.Compared with the combination of topography indices and vegetation indices, the addition of SAR indices effectively improves the prediction accuracy of the model. In general, the method of soil salinity prediction based on multi-source sensor combination is better than that based on a single sensor. In addition,SAR indices, vegetation indices, and topography indices are all effective variables for soil salinity prediction.Weighted Difference Vegetation Index(WDVI)is designated as the most important variable in these variables, followed by DEM.The results showed that the high-resolution radar Sentinel-1 and multispectral Sentinel-2 have the potential to develop soil salinity prediction model.Guolin Ma Jianli Ding Lijng Han Zipeng Zhang Si Ran 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,2:4
Exploration of the dynamic water resource carrying capacity of the Keriya River Basin on the southern margin of the Taklimakan Desert,China显示文摘The water resource carrying capacity(WRCC)in river basin changes dynamically under climate change, economic development, and technological advancement.Climate change affects hydrological processes and spatial/temporal distribution of water resources;while economic develo-ment and technological advancement can also affect the balance of water resources systems.Under climate change, economic development, and technological advancement, itis of great significance to explore the dynamic behavior of WRCC in river basins. This will help to alleviate water resources security issues and build a sustainable water resources system. This study was carried out to evaluate the dynamic WRCC using the'climate, economics, and technology-control objective inversion mode',which used total water consumption,water-use efficiency, and restrained total pollutant control in the water functional area as boundary conditions. This study was conducted on the Keriya River Basin,a sub-catchment located in southem margin of the Taklimakan Desert. The WRCC in the Keriya River Basin in 2015 was calculated, and the trends in the short term(2020),middle tem(2030),and long term(2050)were predicted. The results revealed that climate change factors have a positive effect on WRCC in the Keriya River Basin, which leads to an increase in total water resources.Economic and technological development exhibits an overall positive effect, while increasing in water consumption and sewage discharge exhibit a negative effect.Shuhong Yang Tao Yang 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,1:3
Export competitiveness of agricultural products and agricultural sustainability in China显示文摘The competitiveness of a country’s agricultural products is not only related to its capacity to export agricultural products, but also to the sustainability of its agricultural sector. How to improve the international competitiveness of a country’s agricultural products while maintaining the sustainability of its agricultural sector is a practical problem of great urgency for a country with a large agricultural sector such as China. With this in mind, this study should have a considerable policy and practical significance. We used two evaluation indices, namely trade competitiveness(TC)index and revealed comparative advantage(RCA)index,to measure and analyze the international competitiveness of six China’s representative agricultural products,i.e.,live pigs, live chickens, live cattle, apples, tea, and beer, and to examine the changing trends of these products’competitiveness during 1994-2013.The results indicate that the export competitiveness of China’s agricultural products is weak and likely to deteriorate further. However, some traditional agricultural products with distinctive regional characteristics, for example, tea and live pigs, are relatively strong internationally. To this end,China should vigorously promote the production and foreign trade in traditional agricultural products with distinctive regional characteristics. At the same time, comprehensive measures should be taken to enhance the international competitiveness of disadvantaged agricultural products.LONG Yulin 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,3:2
Purchase willingness of new energy vehicles: A case study in Jinan City of China显示文摘Speeding up the promotion of new energy vehicles is an important measure to optimize the energy structure, promote energy conservation and emission reduction, and develop the economy sustainability. The research uses a questionnaire survey to analyze the residents’willingness to purchase new energy vehicles in Jinan Gty of China, and utilizes the binomial logistic regression model and Global Moran's I to explain the impact of three factors(including responden ts'personal characteristics and subjective cognition, products, and social environment)on the purchase willingness of new energy vehicles.According to the survey,75.12%of the responden ts consider buying new energy vehicles in the future, but only 11.66%of the respondents know new energy vehicles well.It can be seen that the respondents in Jinan City generally have an insufficient understanding of new energy vehicles. It may lead to a decline in residents’trust in new energy vehicles, which will in turm affect their purchase willingness.Based on the survey,we find that women who live far from the city center enjoy high incomes and have a low-carbon awareness, generally exhibit a higher willingness to purchase new energy vehicles.Spatial distribution of the purchase willingness has certain aggregation characteristics, showing a positive spatial correlation pattern.Purchase willingness has a certain positive diffusion effect in space, and areas with a higher purchase willingness have a positive driving effect on their surrounding regions.Spatial distribution of the purchase willingness can be used as one of the breakthroughs in promoting new energy vehicles. In addition,safety,price,after-sales service, and infrastruicture of new energy vehicles are important determinants of people's purchase willingness.Among the types of subsidies, financial subsidy is most effective on the residents’purchase wilingness. Our research provides an impor tant information for the promotion of new energy vehicles in the region.Xueqing Tian Qingling Zhang Yuzhu Chi Yu Cheng 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,1:2
Effect of future climate change on the water footprint of major crops in southern Tajikistan显示文摘Danghara,a major food production area in southern Tajikistan,is currently suffering from the impact of rapid climate change and intensive human activities.Assessing the future impact of climate change on crop water requirements(CWRs)for the current growing period and defining the optimal sowing date to reduce future crop water demand are essential for local/regional water and food planning. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze possible future climate change effects on the water requirements of major crops using the statistical downscaling method in the Danghara District to simulate the future temperature and precipitation for two future periods(2021-2050 and 2051-2080),under three representative concentration pathways(RCP2.6,RCP4.5,and RCP8.5)according to the CanESM2 global climate model. The water footprint(WFP)of major crops was calculated as a measure of their CWRs.The increased projection of precipitation and temperature probably caused an increase in the main crop’s WFP for the current growing period, which was mainly due to the green water(GW)component in the long term and a decrease in the blue water(BW)component during the second future period, except for cotton, where all components were predicted to remain stable.Under three scenarios for the two future potato and winter wheat decreased from 5.7%to 4.8%and 3.4%to 2.2%,respectively.Although the WFP of cotton demonstrated a stable increase, according to the optimal sowing date, adecrease in irrigation demand or Bw was expected. The results of our study might be useful fordeveloping a new strategy related to irrigation systems and could help to find a balance betweenwater and food for environmental water demands and human use.Muhammadjon Kobuliev Tie Liu Zainalobudin Kobuliev Xi Chen Aminjon Gulakhmadov Anming Bao 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,1:2
Assessment of ecosystem services value in response to prevailing and future land use/cover changes in Lahore,Pakistan显示文摘Land use/cover changes(LUCCs)significantly affect ecosystem services(ESs)and their corresponding monetary value.ESs can be evaluated to analyze the ecological and environmental changes caused by LUCCs.This research aims to estimate variations in the ecosystem services value(ESV)due to LUCCs in Lahore of Pakistan, and to offer information and recommendations to policy-makers concerned with the economic improvement of metropolis areas. We first investigated the historical LUCCs from 1990 to 2019,and then simulated the future land use/cover in 2030 and 2050 based on the CA-Markov model under three scenarios, including business-as-usual(BAU),rapid economic growth(REG),and coordinated environmental sustainability(CES).Subsequently,we evaluated the ESV from 1990 to 2050 and evaluated the historical and potential future ESV changes induced by LUCCs during 1990–2019 and 2019–2050,respectively.The results showed that, land use/cover exhibited an increase in built-up land and decreases in vegetation, water body, and unused land both in the past and future. The net ESV decreased from 58.26 million USD in 1990 to 50.31 million USD in 2019.In 2050,the decrease in ESV is most rapid under the REG scenario(decrease ESV of 7.13 million USD and decrease percentage of 14.18%),followed by the BAU(decrease ESV of 5.61 million USD and decrease percentage of 11.15%)and CES(decrease ESV of 5.18 million USD and decrease percentage of 10.30%)scenarios.For each ecosystem service type, the ESV of waste treatment decreased by 18.37%from 1990 to 2019,followed by soil formation and conservation(17.52%),biodiversity and maintenance(13.23%),climate regulation(11.80%),food production(11.69%),hydrological regulation(11.11%),and aesthetic value(3.07%).These outcomes indicate that continuous land use/cover planning should focus on regenerating aquatic areas and vegetation restoration.Mobeen Akhtar Yuanyuan Zhao Guanglei Gao Qudsia Gulzar Azfar Hussain Abdus Samie 2020Regional Sustainability2020,1,1:2
Environmental degradation and poverty:A bibliometric review显示文摘Understanding the mutual logic between environment and poverty mitigation is vital for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).This study conducts a bibliometric review of the available literature on environmental degradation and poverty and summarizes the existing researches.By applying suitable keywords,we retrieved 175 peer-reviewed articles from the Web of Science published between 1993 and 2020.We utilized the visualization of similarity viewer(VOSviewer)for this bibliometric study and classified the leading publications, prominent journals, and institutions.Furthermore, our bibliometric review found a phenomenon in investigation that people are indifference about the impact of environmental degradation on rising poverty levels in poor and developing countries. In terms of contributions, this study classifies 4 leading thematic clusters that identify how environmental degradation increases poverty.By employing text mining analysis, this research connects specific environmental terms accountable for the recent rise in global poverty. We finally recommend that including other databases to strengthen the findings of environmental degradation and poverty is one of the future research directions.Muhammad Ali Khan BURKI Umar BURKI Usama NAJAM 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,4:1
Overview of priorities, threats, and challenges to biodiversity conservation in the southern Philippines显示文摘Human activities have severely impacted on many species and ecosystems. Thus, understanding the local biodiversity situation is crucial for implementing effective biodiversity conservation interventions.Mindanao in the southern Philippines is home to various unique species, particularly in its pristine ecosystems. However, the available biodiversity data for many terrestrial vertebrates and key areas remain incomplete. To address this issue,we synthesized published literature related to biodiversity from 2000 to 2022 in Mindanao. Moreover, this analysis used four key terrestrial vertebrates(amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals)in Mindanao as research objects.According to our findings, there was a significant and positive correlation between the number of biodiversity studies and species recorded. In terms of species richness, birds were the most recorded group(n=334 spp.),followed by reptiles(n=108 spp.),mammals(n=70 spp.),and amphibians(n=52 spp.).We also found that the number of endemic and threatened species varies geographically and across taxonomic groups.Yet,we discovered a significant disparity in the information available on biodiversity in different provinces of Mindanao. For example, the western provinces of Mindanao have had no record of biodiversity for more than two decades.Furthermore,we found that the changes in tree cover loss were consistent with biodiversity records, but this correlation is only significant for birds. Finally,we highlighted some critical threats and challenges to biodiversity, including deforestation, agricultural expansion, mining, and their impact on biodiversity conservation in Mindanao. Our findings suggested that biodiversity conservation should focus not only on areas with high levels of biodiversity but also on areas lacking biodiversity information. To do this,we call for strengthening collaboration among various institutions and digitizing and centralizing of information related to biodiversity.By gaining a deeper understanding of biodiversity in Mindanao,we can better and sustainably protect critical ecosystems in this region from the increasing threats posed by human activities.Angelo Rellama AGDUMA Francisco Gil GARCIA Ma.Teodora CABASAN Jonald PIMENTEL Renee Jane ELE Meriam RUBIO Sedra MURRAY Bona Abigail HILARIO-HUSAIN Kier Celestial Dela CRUZ Sumaira ABDULLAH Shiela Mae BALASE Krizler Cejuela TANALGO 2023Regional Sustainability2023,4,2:1
Measurement and influencing factors of urban traffic ecological resilience in developing countries: A case study of 31 Chinese cities显示文摘An urban traffic ecosystem is a spatial structure composed of air, population, vehicles, roads, green spaces, and regions.Traffic ecological resilience is a critical issue in high-quality urban development. From the perspective of system optimization,it is important to study the level of urban traffic ecological resilience and analyze its influencing factors. In this study,we evaluated traffic ecological resilience, characterized its spatio-temporal differentiation, and explored its influencing factors by constructing a system of urban traffic ecological resilience and by analyzing the environmental protection and urban construction data in 31 Chinese cities during 2011-2018.By conducting Kernel density analysis, standard deviation ellipse, comprehensive weight determination, panel data regression analysis,andχ2test,we found that traffic ecological resilience was low on the whole and exhibited the temporal trend of“decreasing first and then increasing”and the spatial characteristic of“high in the east, second in the middle, and low in the west”.The cities with high traffic ecological resilience density values were located in Southeast China and tended to move from northwest to southeast.Governance capability, market activity, technological innovation capability, opening degree, and financial resources had significant effects on urban traffic ecological resilience. Finally,we gave some suggestions for improving the urban traffic ecological resilience in Chinese cities as well as other developing countries in the world.HU Xiwu SU Yunqing REN Kefeng SONG Fang XUE Ruixiang 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,3:1
Interconnections between governance and socioeconomic conditions:Understanding the challenges in sub-Saharan Africa显示文摘Given that challenges on the issue of socioeconomic development faced by countries in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA)have been identified as critical to strengthening the inherent link between governance and socioeconomic conditions, this study examines the interconnections between governance and socioeconomic conditions in SSA.With a focus on 25 countries in SSA between 2005 and 2019,we conduct the analysis based on the Panel-Corrected Standard Error and System Generalized Method of Moments estimations and panel causality tests. The results show that SSA does not seem to have the means of effective governance to spur improved socioeconomic conditions. Moreover, the pervasiveness of institutional problems in many countries of SSA has been responsible for the poor socioeconomic conditions in the region.Likewise, governance quality and socioeconomic conditions are found to influence each other. An improvement in socioeconomic conditions could result in better governance quality. On the other hand, governance quality is viewed as a vital ingredient in achieving needed socioeconomic development outcomes. Thus,it is suggested that there is a need for countries in SSA to streamline governing systems toward engendering improved well-being.The introduction and implementation of transformative policies through effective governance are also necessary for ensuring critical structural changes and increasing social service provision.Overall, there should be a proactive identification of ineffective policies and procedures by policymakers to enhance meaningful impacts in the region.Fisayo FAGBEMI Geraldine Ejiaka NZERIBE Tolulope Temilola OSINUBI Simplice ASONGU 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,4:1
Evaluation and optimization analysis of high-speed rail network structure in Northeast China under the background of northeast revitalization显示文摘The construction of high-speed rail(HSR)network has promoted the social-economic ties of cities, accelerated the compression of time and space, and changed the pattern of regional development. In this paper, with the adoption of the operation frequency data of HSR from 12306 website, and based on the HSR connection strength model and social network analysis model,as well as according to the HSR connection strength,HSR network density, centrality, agglomeration subgroup, and other indicators,we analyzed the characteristics of HSR network structure in Northeast China. Results show that the number of HSR cities in Northeast China is small, cities in HSR network generally exhibit weak connectivity, and the existence of HSR network marginalizes cities such as Ulanhot,Baicheng, and Songyuan, which significantly reduce the overall network connectivity of Northeast China. The overall centrality of HSR network in Northeast China is characterized by“one axis, four edges”;specifically, the one axis is located in Harbin-Dalian transportation line and the four edges are located on both sides of the main axis of Harbin-Dalian transportation line.Eight agglomeration subgroups(four double city subgroups and four multi city subgroups)have formed in Northeast China. The core status of Shenyang in HSR network is improved significantly, and“one axis and two wings”HSR network in Liaoning Province is improved significantly. With the gradual expansion of Chaoyang-Fuxin,Dandong-Benxi,and Jilin-Yanji branch networks, the“point axis”HSR network mode in Northeast China has gradually developed and matured. In the future,it is recommended to rely on eight agglomerating subgroups to encrypt HSR network structure, create secondary node central cities, and gradually build a new pattern of opening up in Northeast China.XU Shaojie WANG Fuyuan WANG Kaiyong 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,4:1
Contribution of non-timber forest products to the livelihoods of the forest-dependent communities around the Khadimnagar National Park in northeastern Bangladesh显示文摘Non-timber forest products(NTFPs)play a significant role in the improvement of the forest-dependent people’s livelihoodsaround the world, strengthening protection for the sustainable use of forests. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the influence of occupational category-wise(fuelwood collectors,farmers,small-scale businessmen, day labourers, and tea estate labourers)dependencyon NTFPsand the role of NTFPs on household income around the Khadimnagar National Park(KNP)in northeastern Bangladesh. In 2014,178purposively selected respondents from four villages(out of 22 villagesaround the KNP)were interviewed face-to-face using a semi-structured questionnaire. The study observed that these forest-dependent communities utilized resources of the KNP mainly for domestic energy supply, household income, and house construction. Results showed that income from NTFPs made a significant contribution to family income.Income data analysis indicated that small-scale businessmen earned relatively more income from NTFPs,followed by tea estate labourersand day labourers. The study revealed significant negative relationships of the distance of households from the forest with the amount of NTFPs collected(P<0.01)and monthly income from NTFPs(P<0.01).Positive significant relationships were found between the amount of NTFPs collected and the time spent in NTFP collection(P<0.001),as well as betweenmonthly income from NTFPs and family size(P<0.001).The fuelwood collectors and farmers collected significantly greater amounts of NTFPs per trip(P<0.001)than other occupational categories. The households that were moderately to highly dependent on NTFPs collected significantly higher amounts of NTFPs pertrip(P<0.01)than the households that were moderately dependent and less dependent on NTFPs.Community dependence on KNP’sresources, community’sappreciation of the KNP’s ecosystem services for villagers’livelihoods, and community’s high levels of concern for forest conservation provided a foundation for the sustainable management of the KNP.The study findings will be useful for designing an effective forest management plan and policy for NTFP management and forest conservation with the active involvement of the forest-dependent people in northeastern Bangladesh.Md.Habibur RAHMAN Bishwajit ROY Md.Shahidul ISLAM 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,3:1
Biodiversity arks in the Anthropocene显示文摘The Anthropocene proposal suggested that the Earth may have entered a new geological epoch,in which human activity and climate change are influencing the environment at global scale.Arrival of the Anthropocene is bringing an unprecedented challenge to the biodiversity that is essential to humans, and enhancing many benefits of nature to human being. However, biodiversity loss is aggravating in the rhythm of inevitable change in the Anthropocene, and the adaptation of biodiversity to the anthropogenic disturbance seems unable to keep pace with the human activity and climate change.Therefore,re-examination of the assumptions and practices upon the current conservation endeavor are needed. We suggested that biodiversity conservation should be paid more attention to the response from biodiversity to the human activity and climate change in the Anthropocene. Thus, the concept of biodiversity arks in the Anthropocene is proposed, that is,biodiversity arks in the Anthropocene are the areas where vulnerable biodiversity is sheltered to alleviate human activity and buffered from climate change under the anthropogenic disturbance. The concept should be implemented for biodiversity conservation to fill gaps between our knowledge and build on successful conservation and sustainability in the Anthropocene. It will be certainly important to conservation policy instruction and management under climate change, especially the implementation of climate buffering zones preserving biodiversity in the face of warming climate.Honghu Meng Xiaoyang Gao Yigang Song Guanlong Cao Jie Li 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,2:1
