Predicting defect behavior in B2 intermetallics by merging ab initio modeling and machine learning显示文摘We present a combination of machine learning and high throughput calculations to predict the points defects behavior in binary intermetallic(A–B)compounds, using as an example systems with the cubic B2 crystal structure(with equiatomic AB stoichiometry). To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first application of machine learning-models for point defect properties.High throughput first principles density functional calculations have been employed to compute intrinsic point defect energies in 100 B2 intermetallic compounds. The systems are classified into two groups:(i)those for which the intrinsic defects are antisites for both A and B rich compositions, and(ii)those for which vacancies are the dominant defect for either or both composition ranges. The data was analyzed by machine learning-techniques using decision tree, and full and reduced multiple additive regression tree(MART)models.Among these three schemes,a reduced MART(r-MART)model using six descriptors(formation energy, minimum and difference of electron densities at the Wigner–Seitz cell boundary, atomic radius difference, maximal atomic number and maximal electronegativity)presents the highest fit(98%)and predictive(75%)accuracy.This model is used to predict the defect behavior of other B2 compounds, and it is found that 45%of the compounds considered feature vacancies as dominant defects for either A or B rich compositions(or both). The ability to predict dominant defect types is important for the modeling of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of intermetallic compounds, and the present results illustrate how this information can be derived using modern tools combining high throughput calculations and data analytics. | Bharat Medasani Anthony Gamst Hong Ding Wei Chen Kristin A Persson Mark Asta Andrew Canning Maciej Haranczyk | 2016 | npj Computational Materials2016,,1: | 6
Direct laser writing of volumetric gradient index lenses and waveguides显示文摘Direct laser writing(DLW)has been shown to render 3D polymeric optical components, including lenses, beam expanders, and mirrors, with submicrometer precision. However, these printed structures are limited to the refractive index and dispersive properties of the photopolymer. Here,we present the subsurface controllable refractive index via beam exposure(SCRIBE)method,a lithographic approach that enables the tuning of the refractive index over a range of greater than 0.3 by performing DLW inside photoresist-filled nanoporous silicon and silica scaffolds.Adjusting the laser exposure during printing enables 3D submicron control of the polymer infilling and thus the refractive index and chromatic dispersion.Combining SCRIBE’s unprecedented index range and 3D writing accuracy has realized the world’s smallest(15μm diameter)spherical Luneburg lens operating at visible wavelengths.SCRIBE’s ability to tune the chromatic dispersion alongside the refractive index was leveraged to render achromatic doublets in a single printing step, eliminating the need for multiple photoresins and writing sequences.SCRIBE also has the potential to form multicomponent optics by cascading optical elements within a scaffold. As a demonstration, stacked focusing structures that generate photonic nanojets were fabricated inside porous silicon. Finally,an all-pass ring resonator was coupled to a subsurface 3D waveguide. The measured quality factor of 4600 at 1550 nm suggests the possibility of compact photonic systems with optical interconnects that traverse multiple planes.SCRIBE is uniquely suited for constructing such photonic integrated circuits due to its ability to integrate multiple optical components, including lenses and waveguides, without additional printed supports. | Christian R.Ocier Corey A.Richards Daniel A.Bacon-Brown Qing Ding Raman Kumar Tanner J.Garcia Jorik van de Groep Jung-Hwan Song Austin J.Cyphersmith Andrew Rhode Andrea N.Perry Alexander J.Littlefield Jinlong Zhu Dajie Xie Haibo Gao Jonah F.Messinger Mark L.Brongersma Kimani C.Toussaint Jr Lynford L.Goddard Paul V.Braun | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 6
Taking the pulse of COVID-19:a spatiotemporal perspective显示文摘The sudden outbreak of the Coronavirus disease(COVID-19)swept across the world in early 2020,triggering the lockdowns of several billion people across many countries, including China,Spain,India, the U.K.,Italy,France,Germany,Brazil,Russia,and the U.S.The transmission of the virus accelerated rapidly with the most confirmed cases in the U.S.,India,Russia,and Brazil. In response to this national and global emergency, the NSF Spatiotemporal Innovation Center brought together a taskforce of international researchers and assembled implementation strategies to rapidly respond to this crisis, for supporting research, saving lives, and protecting the health of global citizens. This perspective paper presents our collective view on the global health emergency and our effort in collecting, analyzing, and sharing relevant data on global policy and government responses, human mobility, environmental impact, socioeconomical impact;in developing research capabilities and mitigation measures with global scientists, promoting collaborative research on outbreak dynamics, and reflecting on the dynamic responses from human societies. | Chaowei Yang Dexuan Sha Qian Liu Yun Li Hai Lan Weihe Wendy Guan Tao Hu Zhenlong Li Zhiran Zhang John Hoot Thompson Zifu Wang David Wong Shiyang Ruan Manzhu Yu Douglas Richardson Luyao Zhang Ruizhi Hou You Zhoua Cheng Zhong Yifei Tian Fayez Beaini Kyla Carte Colin Flynn Wei Liu Dieter Pfoser Shuming Bao Mei Li Haoyuan Zhang Chunbo Liu Jie Jiang Shihong Du Liang Zhao Mingyue Lu Lin Li Huan Zhou Andrew Ding | 2020 | International Journal of Digital Earth2020,13,10: | 2

Structural basis of the ultrasensitive calcium indicator GCaMP6显示文摘GCaMP is one of the most widely used calcium indicators in neuronal imaging and calcium cell biology. The newly developed GCaMP6 shows superior brightness and ultrasensitivity to calcium concentration change. In this study,we determined crystal structures of Ca2+-bound GCaMP6 monomer and dimer and presented detailed structural analyses in comparison with its parent version GCaMP5G.Our analyses reveal the structural basis for the outperformance of this newly developed Ca2+indicator.Three substitution mutations and the resulting changes of local structure and interaction explain the ultrasensitivity and increased fluorescence intensity common to all three versions of GCaMP6.Each particular substitution in the three GCaMP6 is also structurally consistent with their differential sensitivity and intensity, maximizing the potential of using GCaMP6 in solving diverse problems in neuronal research and calcium signaling. Our studies shall also be beneficial to further structure-guided optimization of GCaMP and facilitate the design of novel calcium indicators. | DING JingJin LUO Andrew F. | 10 | Linking the past and present to predict the distribution of Asian crested ibis(Nipponia nippon)under global changes显示文摘Understanding how species’ecological niches adapt to environmental changes through time is critical for predicting the effect of future global change on endangered species.Yet few studies have incorporated knowledge of past niche shifting into the assessment of species’future fate in a changing world. In this study,we integrated the ecological niche dynamics into the species distribution modeling of the Asian crested ibis(Nipponia nippon)in East Asia.Specifically,we compared historical and present ecological niches of crested ibis in four-dimensional environmental space based on species occurrence and environmental data.We then employed a multi-temporal ecological niche model to estimate the potential geographical distribution of crested ibis under future climate and land-use changes. Our results show that crested ibis retained similar though not identical ecological niches over time.Compared to the historical baseline range, the current suitable habitat for crested ibis has been reduced by 39.6%.The effects of human activity outweigh those of climate change regarding the distribution of crested ibis.We conclude that the ecological niche of crested ibis was tended to be conservative, and future potentially suitable habitat may encounter northeastward and northwestward shift, and possibly expand by 18.7%referred to the historical range.Thefindings of our study are of clear importance for the conservation and successful reintroduction of crested ibis in East Asia. | Fangyuan YU Yiwen SUN Tiejun WANG Andrew KSKIDMORE Changqing DING Xinping YE | 2022 | Integrative Zoology2022,17,6: | 1

Pneumatic programmable superrepellent surfaces显示文摘Morphological transformation of surface structures is widely manifested in nature and highly preferred for many applications such as wetting interaction;however,in situ tuning of artificial morphologies independent of smart responsive materials remains elusive. Here, with the aid of microfluidics,we develop a pneumatic programmable superrepellent surface by tailoring conventional wetting materials(e.g.,polydimethylsiloxane)with embedded flexible chambers connecting a microfluidic system, thus realizing a morphological transformation for enhanced liquid repellency based on a nature‐inspired rigid‐flexible hybrid principle(i.e.,triggering symmetry breaking and oscillator coupling mechanisms). The enhancement degree can be in situ tuned within around 300 ms owing to pneumatically controllable chamber morphologies. We also demonstrate that the surface can be freely programmed to achieve elaborated morphological pathways and gradients for preferred droplet manipulation such as directional rolling and bouncing. Our study highlights the potential of an in situ morphological transformation to realize tunable wettability and provides a programmable level of droplet control by intellectualizing conventional wetting materials. | Songtao Hu Xiaobao Cao Tom Reddyhoff Xijia Ding Xi Shi Daniele Dini Andrew J.deMello Zhike Peng Zuankai Wang | 2022 | Droplet2022,1,1: | 1
