New advances in virtual plant research显示文摘Virtual plants are computer simulations of the growth, development and deployment of plants in a three-dimensional space. Over the past 20 years, significant progress has been made in virtual plant modeling corresponding to the rapid advances in information technology. Virtual plant research has broad applications in agronomy, forestry, ecology, and remote sensing areas. In this review, we attempt to introduce the significance, modeling methodology, and main advances in virtual plant research and applications. The challenges associated with virtual plant modeling in agronomy applications, including the interaction mechanism between plant and environment and root system modeling, are also discussed. Insights into applications of virtual plants in agronomy are given in the areas of performing virtual experiments to accurately quantify the utilization of soil water and nutrients, to design crop ideotype on computers, and to improve crop planting. | Yan Guo Baoguo Li | 2001 | Chinese Science Bulletin2001,46,11: | 21
Effect of cypermethrin insecticide on the microbial community in cucumber phyllosphere显示文摘Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is one of the most widely used vegetable in the world, and different pesticides have been extensively used for controlling the insects and disease pathogens of this plant. However, little is known about how the pesticides affect the microbial community in cucumber phyllosphere. This study was the first attempt to assess the impact of pyrethroid insecticide cyperemethrin on the microbial communities of cucumber phyllosphere using biochemical and genetic approaches.Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) assay indicated that cyperemethrin insecticide treatment led to a significant increase in both total and bacterial biomass and a decrease in fungal biomass and the ratio of Gram-positive (GP) bacteria to Gram-negative (GN) bacteria within the cucumber phyllosphere.Principal-component analyses (PCA) suggested that the number of unsaturated and cyclopropane PLFAs (16:1ω9t,18:1ω7,cy17:0,cy19:0) increased with the insecticide treatment, whereas the saturated PLFA i16:0,i17:0 decreased. The increase of GN bacteria implied that the cypermethrin insecticide might be a nutrient for the growth of these phyllosphere microbes.Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) reinforced the PLFA results.A significant change of bacterial community structure was observed in the separate dendrogram cluster between control and treated samples with the cucumber phyllosphere following cypermethrin insecticide treatment. Moreover, the increased terminal restriction fragments (T-RFs) (58,62,89,99,119,195,239,311,340,and 473 bp) indicated that some bacteria might play a significant role in the insecticide degradation within the cucumber phylosphere, whereas the disappeared T-RFs (44,51,96,223,306,and 338 bp) implied that some other bacteria might potentially serve as microbial indicator of cyperemethrin insecticide exposure. | Baoguo ZHANG Zhihui BAI | 2008 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2008,20,11: | 19
Jianpijiedu Fang improves survival of hepatocarcinoma mice by affecting phosphatase and tensin homolog, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and focal adhesion kinase显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Jianpijiedu Fang (JPJDF) on phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), and focal adhesion kinase (FAK), and on the survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) nude mice. METHODS: Forty male nude mice were randomly divided into 4 groups. Human HCC tissue was implanted in the livers of three groups. After 24 h, the three groups were treated respectively with JPJDF (37.5 g/kg), saline (20 mL/kg) and Tegafur (FT-207, 160 mg/kg) once a day for 10 weeks. The control group without implanting the tissue was concurrently treated with saline (20 mL/kg). The survival data and body weight of all mice were recorded, and expression levels of PTEN, PI3K and FAK in normal tissue and cancer tissue of the livers were eval-uated with immunohistochemical method. RESULTS: The cumulative survival rate of the mice in the JPJDF group was higher than those of the other groups. The rate of weight loss was the lowest in JPJDF group. The survivability and weight loss rate in FT-207 group were the poorest in all groups. The expression intensity of PTEN was higher in normal tissues than in cancer tissues, and lower in the normal tissues of HCC models than in that of mice without HCC. The PTEN expression intensity in normal tissue and cancer tissue from mice treated with FT-207 were lower than that from the mice treated with JPJDF or saline. The expression intensity of PI3K was higher in cancer tissue than in normal tissue. The PI3K expression intensity was the lowest in normal tissue and cancer tissue from mice treated with JPJDF, and the intensity from mice treated with FT-207 was the highest. In mice treated with JPJDF, the expression intensity of FAK was higher in the normal tissue and lower in the cancer tissue than those of the other treatment groups. CONCLUSION: The mechanism accounting for the prolonged survival of HCC-bearing mice treated with JPJDF might be related to the reduction in weight loss and the benign regulation of PTEN, PI3K, and FAK. | Baoguo Sun Jun Meng Ting Xiang Zexiong Chen Yulong Li Lisha Lu Shijun Zhang Xiaolin Chen | 2013 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2013,33,4: | 12
High precision topographic data on Lop Nor basin's Lake 'Great Ear' ? and the timing of its becoming a dry salt lake显示文摘High precision elevation measurements using DGPS were carried out along three representative tran- sects for the 'Great Ear' area, a dry salt lake within the Lop Nor basin. Results indicate that the Lop Nor basin is only 5.2 m deep and its lowest point occurs at the center of the 'Great Ear'. In addition, the basin is asymmetric - steeper in the southwest (0.19‰) and gentler in the northeast (0.09‰). Points along the same 'Great Ear' ring were found to have an identical elevation value, but different when from different ones (lower towards the center). The spacing of the 'Great Ear' rings was found to be closely related with the surface steepness. The closer the 'Great Ear' rings are spaced, the steeper the ground surface, and vice versa. These findings support the argument that the 'Great Ear' rings are the former shoreline trails left behind by Lop Nor water during the last few episodes of recession towards its total dry up. A comprehensive analysis of the high precision elevation data, historical accounts, aerial and satellite photographs and imagery, and official topographic maps of the study area suggests that the 'Great Ear' area in the Lop Nor basin was incorrectly mapped as being covered by a great body of water on the 1963 topographic maps. A re-interpretation of the 1958 aerial photographs and newer remote sensing imagery indicated that the 'Great Ear' ring structure was already in place in 1958 and it continued to appear on the subsequent remote sensing data without any major changes. It is estimated that lake water in the 'Great Ear' area of the Lop Nor basin disappeared between the late 1930s and early 1940s. | LI BaoGuo MA LiChun JIANG PingAn DUAN ZengQiang SUN DanFeng QIU HongLie ZHONG JunPing WU HongQi | 2008 | Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,6: | 11
Underlying mechanism of protection from hypoxic injury seen with n-butanol extract of Potentilla anserine L. in hippocampal neurons显示文摘The alcohol and n-butanol extract of Potentilla anserine L. significantly protects myocardium from acute ischemic injury. However, its effects on rat hippocampal neurons and the mechanism of protection remain unclear. In this study, primary cultured hippocampal neurons from neonatal rats were incubated in 95% N2 and 5% CO2 for 4 hours. Results indicated that hypoxic injury decreased the viability of neurons, increased the expression levels of caspase-9 and caspase-3 mRNA, as well as cytochrome c, Caspase-9, and Caspase-3 protein. Pretreatment with 0.25, 0.062 5, 0.015 6 mg/mL n-butanol extract of Potentilla anserine L. led to a significant increase in cell viability. Expression levels of caspase-9 and caspase-3 mRNA, as well as cytochrome c, Caspase-9, and Caspase-3 protein, were attenuated. The neuroprotective effect of n-butanol extract of Potentilla anserine L. was equivalent to tanshinone IIA. Our data suggest that the n-butanol extract of Potentilla anserine L. could protect primary hippocampal neurons from hypoxic injury by deactivating mitochondrial cell death. | Xiaojing Qin Lingzhi Li Qi Lv Baoguo Yu ShuwangYang Tao He Yongliang Zhang | 2012 | Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,33: | 11
Postconflict behavior among female Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus roxellana within one-male units in the Qinling Mountains,China显示文摘For group-living primates, the information on postconflict management is crucial for understanding primate competitionand cooperation. However, such information is poorly known for snub-nosed monkeys, especially for wild populations. Inthis study, from September 2007 to June 2008, we investigated postconflict behavior among adult females Sichuan snub-nosedmonkeys Rhinopithecas roxellana within one-male units in a wild, provisioned group in the Qinling Mountains of China bymeans of the time-rule method and the PC-MC method. We obtained a total of 81 PC-MC pairs and each individual was involvedin only 0.004 aggressive behavior per observation hour. The first affiliative behavior was more likely to occur within the firstminute after a conflict. The postconflict affiliative behaviors most often seen were contact-sit, embrace and grooming. The affiliativecontacts between adult females occur due to selective attraction, i.e. reconciliation. | 7 | Long-term bone and lung consequences associated with hospital-acquired severe acute respiratory syndrome:a 15-year follow-up from a prospective cohort study显示文摘The most severe sequelae after rehabilitation from SARS are femoral head necrosis and pulmonary fibrosis. We performed a 15-year follow-up on the lung and bone conditions of SARS patients. We evaluated the recovery from lung damage and femoral head necrosis in an observational cohort study of SARS patients using pulmonary CT scans, hip joint MRI examinations, pulmonary function tests and hip joint function questionnaires. Eighty medical staff contracted SARS in 2003. Two patients died of SARS, and78 were enrolled in this study from August 2003 to March 2018. Seventy-one patients completed the 15-year follow-up. The percentage of pulmonary lesions on CT scans diminished from 2003(9.40 ± 7.83)% to 2004(3.20 ± 4.78)%(P < 0.001) and remained stable thereafter until 2018(4.60 ± 6.37)%. Between 2006 and 2018, the proportion of patients with interstitial changes who had improved pulmonary function was lower than that of patients without lesions, as demonstrated by the one-second ratio(FEV1/FVC%, t = 2.21, P = 0.04) and mid-flow of maximum expiration(FEF25%–75%, t = 2.76, P = 0.01). The volume of femoral head necrosis decreased significantly from 2003(38.83 ± 21.01)% to 2005(30.38 ± 20.23)%(P = 0.000 2), then declined slowly from 2005 to 2013(28.99 ± 20.59)% and plateaued until 2018(25.52 ± 15.51)%. Pulmonary interstitial damage and functional decline caused by SARS mostly recovered, with a greater extent of recovery within 2 years after rehabilitation. Femoral head necrosis induced by large doses of steroid pulse therapy in SARS patients was not progressive and was partially reversible. | Peixun Zhang Jia Li Huixin Liu Na Han Jiabao Ju Yuhui Kou Lei Chen Mengxi Jiang Feng Pan Yali Zheng Zhancheng Gao Baoguo Jiang | 2020 | Bone Research2020,8,1: | 8
Evaluating the reliability of microsatellite genotyping from low-quality DNA templates with a polynomial distribution model显示文摘Molecular studies using trace DNA, such as from museum specimens, ancient or forensic samples and samples obtained noninvasively, often have a common problem of low quality of DNA templates. Amplification errors, such as allelic dropout and false allele, may arise during polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using such samples. A mathematical model which treats homozygotes and heterozygotes discriminately has been developed to measure sample quality and compute the confidence level of using multipletube approaches. We use plucked hair samples collected from 26 individual Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxel- lana) to test the model. In this case, a confidence level of 99% can be achieved by three positive PCRs. If the sample quality is very poor and requires many PCR replicates, an alternative multiplestep genotyping method is recommended. This model enables researchers to optimize experimental protocols through pilot studies and obtain reliable genetic information using noninvasive sampling method. | HE Gangi HUANG Kang GUO SongTao JI WeiHong QI XiaoGuang REN Yi JIN XueLin LI BaoGuo | 2011 | Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,24: | 8

Micromorphological Analysis of Soil Structure under No Tillage Management in the Black Soil Zone of Northeast China显示文摘The structure of the 'black soil' in Northeast China has been greatly deteriorated by long-term intensive conventional mouldboard plow tillage (CT) practices. In this study, micromorphological observation and image analysis of soil thin sections were conducted to evaluate the impacts of 21 years (1986-2007) of no tillage (NT) on soil structure as compared to CT in an experiment near Gongzhuling City, Jilin Province. Soil organic matter (SOM), wet aggregate stability and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) were also analyzed. Total SOM was not significantly affected by tillage systems, but fresher SOM was observed in the surface layer under NT. The aggregates under NT showed different hierarchies in the form of crumbs, and the mean weight diameter (MWD) of NT was significant higher than that of CT in the surface layer. Platy and blocky aggregates were frequently observed in the lower layers under CT practice. The compound pore structure with intertwined intra-and interaggregates pores under NT was well developed in a layer from 0-5 cm to 20-25 cm. While under CT system, more inter-aggregate pores and fewer intraaggregate pores were observed, and planes and channels were frequently found in the 20-25 cm layer, where macroporosity decreased significantly and a plow pan was evident. The Ks values of NT were significantly lower at 0-5 cm but significantly higher at 20-25 cm compared with CT, which showed the same trend with macroporosity. These results confirmed that long-term CT practice fragmented the tillage layer soil and compacted the lower layer soil and formed a plow pan. While long-term NT practice in the black soil region favored soil aggregation and a stable porous soil structure was formed, which are important to the water infiltration and prevent soil erosion. | ZHOU Hu LI Baoguo LU Yizhong | 2009 | Journal of Mountain Science2009,6,2: | 7
Effect of Competitive Adsorption between Sodium Tripolyphosphate and Naphthalene Superplasticizer on Fluidity of Cement Paste显示文摘The adsorption amount, ζ-potential of cement particles and fluidity of cement paste were tested to research the competitive adsorption between naphthalene superplasticizer(FDN) and STPP. The experimental results showed that the presence of STPP could significantly improve the fluidity of cement paste and reduce the fluidity loss with FDN. There existed a competitive adsorption between STPP and FDN. STPP and calcium ions formed complexes; they preferentially adsorbed onto surface of cement particles and preempt adsorption points of FDN; and it reduced adsorption amount of FDN. In the absence of STPP, saturation adsorption amount of FDN was 5.93 mg/g; but when the dosage of STPP was 0.1%, it reduced to 4.3 mg/g(about 72.5%). The adsorption amount of FDN was reduced by STPP, but ζ-potential of cement particles enhanced and fluidity of cement paste increased because of strong negative charge effect of the complexes. Adsorption of the complexes would delay Ca2+ into liquid and inhibit formation of active adsorption points. Then, content of FDN in liquid increased with the addition of STPP and ζ-potential of cement particles became stable. In this way, fluidity loss of cement paste reduced. | 谭洪波 MA Baoguo LI Xiangguo JIAN Shouwei YANG Hu | 2014 | Journal of Wuhan University of Technology(Materials Science)2014,29,2: | 6
Dominance rank of adult females and mating competition in Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys(Rhinopithecus roxellana)in the Qinling Mountains,China显示文摘Dominance hierarchy reflects resource competition in male primates as well as females. In this study,we collected data on the social rank and mating competition of female Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys from September 2009 to June 2010 in the Qinling Mountains,Shaanxi,China.Displacement was used to determine social hierarchy of the studied wild females.A total of 1223 displacement bouts between adult females and 316 mating behaviors within one-male units(OMUs) were recorded.Competitive displacement among females was very low(0.22 displacements per observation hour). The dominant ranks of females in target OMUs were determined by displacement, from one OMU to another:JB unit:YL > DBC > YCM >XBC > BD;JZT unit:XHW > JG > DT;PK unit:QQ > TM > HF;LP unit:SK > TH > WM.Higher-ranking females performed significantly more sexual behavior than lower-ranking females in this rare monkey.High-ranking females were more likely to win mating contests within those OMUs.Based on these studies,we assessed the social relationships among adult females and clarified possible explanations for the strategies of female mating competition in the OMUs.Furthermore, the notion that reproductive success may also be related to female dominance hierarchies in this polygynous species should be considered in future research. | HE HaiXia ZHAO HaiTao QI XiaoGuang WANG XiaoWei GUO SongTao JI WeiHong WANG ChengLiang WEI Wei LI BaoGuo | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17: | 5
A four-compartment model for the COVID-19 infection—implications on infection kinetics, control measures, and lockdown exit strategies显示文摘Objective:To analyse the impact and repercussions of the surge in healthcare demand in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, assess the potential effectiveness of various infection/disease control measures, and make projections on the best approach to exit from the current lockdown.Design:A four-compartment model was constructed for SARS-CoV-2 infection based on the Wuhan data and validated with data collected in Italy, the UK,and the US.The model captures the effectiveness of various disease suppression measures in three modifiable factors:(a)the per capita contact rate(β)that can be lowered by means of social distancing,(b)infection probability upon contacting infectious individuals that can be lowered by wearing facemasks, personal hygiene, etc.,and(c)the population of infectious individuals in contact with the susceptible population, which can be lowered by quarantine. The model was used to make projections on the best approach to exit from the current lockdown. Results:The model was applied to evaluate the epidemiological data and hospital burden in Italy, the UK,and the US.The control measures were identified as the key drivers for the observed epidemiological data through sensitivity analyses.Analysing the different lockdown exit strategies showed that a lockdown exit strategy with a combination of social separation/general facemask use may work, but this needs to be supported by intense monitoring whichwould allowre-introduction/tightening of the controlmeasures if the number of newinfected subjects increases again. Conclusions and relevance:Governments should act early in a swift and decisive manner for containment policies.Any lockdown exit will need to be monitored closely, with regards to the potential of lockdown reimplementation. This mathematical model provides a framework for major pandemics in the future. | Tianbing Wang Yanqiu Wu Johnson Yiu-Nam Lau Yingqi Yu Liyu Liu Jing Li Kang Zhang Weiwei Tong Baoguo Jiang | 2020 | Precision Clinical Medicine2020,3,2: | 5
First evidence of prey capture and meat eating by wild Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus bieti in Yunnan,China显示文摘Most extant nonhuman primates occasionally prey on fast-moving, warm-blooded animals; however, Indriidae, Lepilemuridae, and Colobinae either scavenged for meat or did not eat meat at all. Here we report six cases of animal consumptionby the snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus bieti in a wild, habituated group between 2004 and 2009 in Yunnan, China. At present, only males in an all-male unit within the study group were involved in active hunting. Such a male-biased activity may be relatedto the group structure and spatial spread of R. bieti. Two females were observed eating freshly killed birds. The findings confirmedthat R. bieti engaged in scavenging and, when hunting, employed a cranio-cervical bite to kill their prey. Meat eating islikely a nutrient maximization feeding strategy in R. bieti, especially in males. A begging behavior occurred after successful preycapture. Although begging was observed, no sharing of the meat was seen. | 18 | Assessment of the influence of global dimming on the photosynthetic production of rice based on three-dimensional modeling显示文摘Observations indicate that global radiation reaching the Earth's surface has gradually decreased over the past several decades(i.e.,the 'global dimming' phenomenon),while the fraction of diffuse radiation in global radiation has increased. It has been found that the increase in diffuse fraction significantly increases photosynthetic production in the canopy, but the mechanism has not been clarified.A three-dimensional light distribution model considering the geometry of incident radiation was employed in this study. This model was used to simulate the light distribution and potential photosynthetic production of rice canopy. The results indicate that the potential photosynthetic production of rice significantly increases in response to an increase in the diffuse fraction as long as global radiation does not decline greatly. The 'fertilization effect' of diffuse radiation results from the reduction of leaf area with photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD) below the light compensation point in response to an increasing diffuse fraction, and an increase in the leaf area with PPFD on the linear part of the light response curve. The increase in the diffuse fraction results in a significant increase in the photosynthetic rate of the upper canopy.High-performance computation is an easy-to-use and economic approach to overcome the computational constraints of the model. | ZHENG BangYou MA YunTao LI BaoGuo GUO Yan DENG QiYun | 2011 | Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,2: | 4

Human activities and elevational constraints restrict ranging patterns of snub-nosed monkeys in a mountainous refuge显示文摘Both natural conditions and anthropogenic factors affect the survivability, distribution, and population density of wildlife. To understand the extent and how these factors drive species distributions,a detailed description of animal movement patterns in natural habitats is needed. In this study,we used satellite telemetry to monitor elevational ranges favored by endangered golden snub-nosed monkeys(Rhinopithecus roxellana),in the Qinling Mountains, central China. We investigated the abundance and distribution of food resources through sampling vegetation quadrats at different elevations and sampled anthropogenic activities using field surveys. Our results indicated that although there was no significant variation in food resources between low-(<1500 m)and middle-elevations(1500–2200 m),monkeys were found most often in areas above 1500 m,where there was less anthropogenic development(e.g.houses and roads);however, monkeys rarely ranged above 2200 m and had limited food availability at this altitude. There was limited human disturbance at this elevation. We suggest that both human activity and ecological constraints(i.e.food resources)have considerable effects on elevational use of R.roxellana in the Qinling Mountains. This study highlights the critical roles these factors can play in shaping the vertical distribution of high-altitude primates. This research provides useful insights for habitat-based conservation plans in which human disturbance management and habitat restoration should be prioritized. | Pengzhen HUANG Kun BIAN Zhipang HUANG Qi Li Derek WDUNN Gu FANG Jiahui LIU Mengyao WANG Xianfeng YANG Ruliang PAN Cunlao GAO Kaichuang SI Baoguo LI Xiaoguang QI | 2021 | Integrative Zoology2021,16,2: | 3
