| 1 | Recent Advances in Cuticular Wax Biosynthesis and Its Regulation in Arabidopsis显示文摘The aerial parts of land plants are covered with cuticular waxes that limit non-stomatal water loss and gaseous exchanges,and protect plants from ultraviolet radiation and pathogen attacks.They are composed of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs;C20 to C34) in addition to their derivatives,aldehydes,alkanes,primary and secondary alcohols,and wax esters.Due to their physical properties,such as solidity at room temperature and a translucency ranging from transparent to opaque,plant waxes have been used as raw materials in the production of cosmetics,detergents,plastics,soaps,paints,drugs,lubricants,and high-value renewable fuels.Many genes involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis and export have been characterized by forward and reverse genetic approaches as well as by stem epidermis transcriptome analysis.The regulatory mechanisms of cuticular wax biosynthesis have been reported at the transcriptional,posttranscriptional,and translational levels.Recent advances in cuticular wax biosynthesis and its regulation are reviewed in this paper. | Saet Buyl Lee Mi Chung Suh | 2013 | Molecular Plant2013,6,2: | 24 |
| 2 | Effect of Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides on the expression of endothelin-1 and its receptors in an ocular hypertension model of rat glaucoma显示文摘Lycium barbarum, a traditional Chinese anti-aging herb, has been shown to protect retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in a rat chronic ocular hypertension (COH) model. Here, we investigated the expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1), a strong vasoconstrictor, and its receptors, ETA and ETB, in the COH model and assessed the effects of Lycium barbarum on the ET-1 axis. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was induced in the right eye of SD rats using argon laser photocoagulation. (1) The expression of ET-1, ETA and ETB in normal and COH retinas was studied. (2) Some COH rats were fed daily with Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides (LBP) using 1 mg/kg or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 3 weeks (started 1 week before photocoagulation). The effects of LBP on the expression of ET-1 and its receptors, ETA and ETB, in COH retina were evaluated. A semi-quantitative analysis of staining intensity was used to evaluate the expression levels of ET-1, ETA and ETB in retinal vasculature. We found that (1) Under COH condition, the immunoreactivity of ET-1 was increased in retina associated with an increase of ETB receptor immunoreactivity and a decrease of ETA receptor immunoreactivity. (2) After feeding COH rats with LBP, the expression of ET-1 was decreased with an increase of ETA expression and a decrease of ETB expression in the retina, especially in RGCs. (3) By comparing the staining intensity in the vasculature of COH retina in LBP-fed group with PBS-fed group, there was a decrease in the expression of ET-1 and ETA and an increase in ETB. In summary, ET-1 expression was up-regulated in the retina in COH model. LBP could decrease the expression of ET-1 and modulate the expression of its receptors, ETA and ETB, under the condition of COH. While most ingested foreign bodies usually pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully, sharp foreign bodies such as toothpicks infrequently cause intestinal perforation and may even result in death. | 4 | Lycium barbarum polysaccharides related RAGE and Aβ levels in the retina of mice with acute ocular hypertension and promote maintenance of blood retinal barrier显示文摘Our previous study verified the protective effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides(LBP)on retinal neurons and blood vessels in acute ocular hypertension(AOH)mice.To investigate the effect of LBP on the reactivity of retinal glial cells,an AOH mouse model was established in one eye by maintaining ocular hypertension of 90 mm Hg for 60 minutes.Either LBP solution(1 mg/kg)or phosphate-buffered saline was administrated to the mice by gavage daily,starting 7 days before the AOH insult and continuing until the mice were sacrificed for specimen collection on day 4 post-insult.After AOH insult,increased numbers of astrocytes and microglia were observed,together with decreased expression of the following glial cell biomarkers in the retinal ganglion cells of AOH mice:glial fibrillary acidic protein,glutamine synthetase,aquaporin-4,S-100 proteins,ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1,amyloid precursor protein and receptor of advanced glycosylation end-products.After intervention with LBP,the above changes were significantly reduced.Remarkably,morphological remodeling of blood vessel-associated retinal astrocytes,marked by glial fibrillary acidic protein,was also observed.These results,taken together,suggest that LBP regulated the production of amyloid-βand expression of receptor of advanced glycosylation end-products,as well as mediating the activity of retinal glial cells,which may lead to the promotion of better maintenance of the blood-retinal barrier and improved neuronal survival in AOH insult.This study was approved by the Committee for the Use of Live Animals in Teaching and Research(approval No.CULTRA-#1664-08). | Xue-Song Mi Qian Feng Amy Cheuk Yin Lo Raymond Chuen-Chung Chang Sookja Kim Chung Kwok-Fai So | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,12: | 8 |
| 5 | Asymptomatic lymphangioma involving the spleen and retroperitoneum in adults显示文摘Lymphangioma,a benign neoplasm of the lymphatic system,is common in children but rare in adults.Its clinical manifestations include abdominal pain,nausea, vomiting and a palpable mass.However,abdominal sonography or abdominal computed tomography(CT) scan can also incidentally reveal lymphangioma.A larger or symptomatic lymphangioma is treated with total resection to prevent recurrence,infection,torsion and enlargement.Although lymphangioma rarely becomes malignant,its prognosis is generally good. | 6 | Streptococcus mutans activates the AIM2, NLRP3 and NLRC4 inflammasomes in human THP-1 macrophages显示文摘Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans), a major aetiologic agent of dental caries, is involved in systemic diseases, such as bacterial endocarditis, if it enters the bloodstream through temporary bacteraemia. Interleukin(IL)-1β, a proinflammatory cytokine, is related to the host defences against pathogens, and its synthesis, maturation, and secretion are tightly regulated by the activation of the inflammasome, an inflammatory signalling complex. This study examined the signalling mechanism of IL-1β secretion and the inflammasome pathway induced by S. mutans to explain the molecular mechanism through which systemic infection by oral streptococci can occur. After infection of THP-1 cells with S. mutans, the expression of inflammasome components was detected using various methods. S. mutans induced IL-1β secretion via caspase-1 activation, and S. mutans-induced IL-1β secretion required absent in melanoma(AIM2), NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3(NLRP3) and NLR family CARD domain-containing 4(NLRC4)inflammasome activation. In particular, the S. mutans-induced NLRP3 inflammasome was mediated by adenosine triphosphate(ATP) release, potassium depletion and lysosomal damage. | 7 | Differential diagnosis of left-sided abdominal pain:Primary epiploic appendagitis vs colonic diverticulitis显示文摘AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics of left primary epiploic appendagitis and to compare them with those of left colonic diverticulitis.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiologic images of the patients who presented with left-sided acute abdominal pain and had computer tomography(CT) performed at the time of presentation showing radiological signs of left primary epiploic appendagitis(PEA) or left acute colonic diverticulitis(ACD) between January 2001 and December 2011. A total of 53 consecutive patients were enrolled and evaluated. We also compared the clinical characteristics,laboratory findings,treatments,and clinical results of left PEA with those of left ACD.RESULTS:Twenty-eight patients and twenty-five patients were diagnosed with symptomatic left PEA and ACD,respectively. The patients with left PEA had focal abdominal tenderness on the left lower quadrant(82.1%). On CT examination,most(89.3%) of the patients with left PEA were found to have an oval fatty mass with a hyperattenuated ring sign. In cases of left ACD,the patients presented with a more diffuse abdominal tenderness throughout the left side(52.0%vs 14.3%; P = 0.003). The patients with left ACD had fever and rebound tenderness more often than those with left PEA(40.0% vs 7.1%,P = 0.004; 52.0% vs14.3%,P = 0.003,respectively). | 8 | Antioxidative phytoceuticals to ameliorate pancreatitis in animal models: An answer from nature显示文摘Despite enthusiastic efforts directed at elucidating critical underlying mechanisms towards the identification of novel therapeutic targets for severe acute pancreatitis(SAP), the disease remains without a specific therapy to be executed within the first hours to days after onset of symptoms. Although earlier management for SAP should aim to either treat organ failure or reduce infectious complications, the current standard of care for the general management of AP in the first hours to days after onset of symptoms include intravenous fluid replacement, nutritional changes, and the use of analgesics with a close monitoring of vital signs. Furthermore, repeated evaluation of severity is very important, as the condition is particularly unstable in the early stages. In cases where biliary pancreatitis is accompanied by acute cholangitis or in cases where biliary stasis is suspected,an early endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is recommended.However,practice guidelines regarding the treatment of pancreatitis are suboptimal.In chronic pancreatitis,conservative management strategies include lifestyle modifications and dietary changes followed by analgesics and pancreatic enzyme supplementation.Recently,attention has been focused on phytoceuticals or antioxidants as agents that could surpass the limitations associated with currently available therapies.Because oxidative stress has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of pancreatitis,antioxidants alone or combined with conventional therapy may improve oxidativestress-induced organ damage.Interest in phytoceuticals stems from their potential use as simple,accurate tools for pancreatitis prognostication that could replace older and more tedious methods.Therefore,the use of antioxidative nutrition or phytoceuticals may represent a new direction for clinical research in pancreatitis.In this review article,recent advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of pancreatitis are discussed and the paradigm shift underway to develop phytoceuticals and antioxidants to treat it is introduced.Despite the promise of studies evaluating the effects of antioxidants/phytoceuticals in pancreatitis,translation to the clinic has thus far been disappointing.However,it is expected that continued research will provide solid evidence to justify the use of antioxidative phytoceuticals in the treatment of pancreatitis. | Jong-Min Park Sooyeon Lee Mi Kyung Chung Sung-Hun Kwon Eun-Hee Kim Kwang Hyun Ko Chang Il Kwon Ki Baik Hahm | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,44: | 5 |
| 9 | Is a split-dose regimen of 2 L polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid tolerable for colonoscopy in an early morning visit to a comprehensive medical check-up?显示文摘AIM To evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of a split-dose 2L polyethylene glycol (PEG)/ascorbic acid(AA) regimen for healthy examinees who visited for comprehensive medical check-up in the early morning.METHODS From February 2015 to March 2015, examinees of average risk who were scheduled for a colonoscopy in the morning were retrospectively enrolled.RESULTS The 189 examinees were divided into split-dose and non-split-dose groups. The adequacy of bowel preparation for the split-dose group vs the non-splitdose group was 96.8% vs 85.2%, respectively, P<0.001, and the compliance of the last meal restrictionwas 74.6% vs 58.2%, respectively, P <0.001. The sleep disturbance (P<0.001) was more prevalent in the split-dose group, however the willingness to repeat the same preparation method (P=0.243) was not different in both groups. The split-dose regimen was the most important factor influencing adequate bowel preparation in multivariate analysis(HR=10.89, 95%CI: 6.53-18.17, P<0.001).CONCLUSION A split-dose regimen of 2L PEG/AA for an early morning colonoscopy was more effective and showed better compliance for diet restriction without any difference in satisfaction and discomfort. | 10 | Clinical implication of FDG uptake of bone marrow on PET/CT in gastric cancer patients with surgical resection显示文摘AIM To determine the relationship between F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) uptake of bone marrow(BM) on positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) and clinical factors and to assess the prognostic value of FDG uptake of BM in gastric carcinoma.METHODS We retrospectively enrolled 309 gastric cancer patients who underwent staging FDG PET/CT and curative surgical resection. FDG uptake of primary tumor was visually classified as positive or negative FDG uptake. Mean FDG uptake of BM(BM SUV) and BM-to-liver uptake ratio(BLR) were measured. The relationships of BM SUV or BLR with clinical factors were evaluated. The prognostic values of BM SUV, BLR, and other clinical factors for predicting recurrence-free survival(RFS) and overall survival(OS) were assessed.RESULTS Of 309 patients, 38 patients(12.3%) experienced cancer recurrence and 18 patients(5.8%) died. Patients with advanced gastric cancer, positive FDG uptake, and recurrence had higher values of BM SUV and BLR than those with early gastric cancer, negative FDG uptake, and no recurrence(P < 0.05). BM SUV and BLR were significantly correlated with hemoglobin level, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-tolymphocyte ratio(P < 0.05). On multivariate analysis, multiple tumors, T stage, lymph node metastasis, tumor involvement of resection margin, and BLR were significantly associated with RFS(P < 0.05). T stage, lymph node metastasis, hemoglobin level, and BLR were significantly associated with OS(P < 0.05).
