| 2 | Metabolic Engineering of Plant-derived (E)-β-farnesene Synthase Genes for a Novel Type of Aphid-resistant Genetically Modified Crop Plants显示文摘Aphids are major agricultural pests that cause significant yield losses of crop plants each year.Excessive dependence on insec-ticides for long-term aphid control is undesirable because of the development of insecticide resistance,the potential negative effects on non-target organisms and environmental pollution.Transgenic crops engineered for resistance to aphids via a non-toxic mode of action could be an efficient alternative strategy.(E)-β-Farnesene (EβF) synthases catalyze the formation of EβF,which for many pest aphids is the main component of the alarm pheromone involved in the chemical communication within these species.EβF can also be synthesized by certain plants but is then normally contaminated with inhibitory compounds.Engineering of crop plants capable of synthesizing and emitting EβF could cause repulsion of aphids and also the attraction of natural enemies that use EβF as a foraging cue,thus minimizing aphid infestation.In this review,the effects of aphids on host plants,plants' defenses against aphid herbivory and the recruitment of natural enemies for aphid control in an agricultural setting are briefly introduced.Furthermore,the plant-derived EβF synthase genes cloned to date along with their potential roles in generating novel aphid resistance via genetically modified approaches are discussed. | Xiu-Dao Yu John Pickett You-Zhi Ma Toby Bruce Johnathan Napier Huw D.Jones Lan-Qin Xia | 2012 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2012,54,5: | 10 |

| 7 | Syncytiotrophoblast Derived Extracellular Vesicles in Relation to Preeclampsia显示文摘The syncytiotrophoblast,a fused single-cell layer between mother and fetus,constitutively releases extracellular vesicles(STBEV)directly into the maternal circulation.STBEV contain a variety of proteins and RNA which can be targeted to specific cells.In preeclampsia,asymptomatic placental oxidative stress is a precursor to later multi-organ dysfunction in the mother.Increased STBEV release in preeclampsia is considered a manifestation of syncytiotrophoblast stress,which may play a key role in signaling between fetus and mother.STBEV release in preeclampsia changes,both in terms of volume and content.In this review,we outline the latest advances in STBEV isolation and detection.We consider evidence for differential STBEV release,protein cargo and RNA content in preeclampsia,highlighting common pitfalls in study design.We summarise studies to date demonstrating STBEV actions on target cells.Ultimately,we consider how STBEV fit into the pathophysiology of the heterogeneous syndrome of preeclampsia.The key unifying concept in early-and late-onset preeclampsia is syncytiotrophoblast stress.We submit that STBEV are the key stress signal in preeclampsia.We believe that further investigation of STBEV release,content,and actions may offer valuable insights into preeclampsia pathophysiology and potential new clinical diagnostics and therapeutic targets. | William R.Cooke Gabriel D.Jones Christopher W.G.Redman Manu Vatish | 2021 | Maternal-Fetal Medicine2021,3,2: | 1 |
